Went in to see what it's all about! Overall it was good, but I wasn't blown away. Had the turkey sandwich which was heavily laden with butter, making it much heavier than it should be. My husband had the beef sandwich, made the same way but he enjoyed it. Service was good, it wasn't very busy. So many other great places to try, we may be back but lots a wonderful places to eat in town Id go back to first! We went back to try Taste again during this weekend and it's still a good spot to hit up in South Haven that is a bit different than what's around. We got: Sweet and spicy shrimp: 7/10 it's like boom boom shrimp. Not spicy. Blackened chicken: 5/10 I didn't really like how dry and overly salty it was. Ribs: 8/10 it's good but I think if they gave hand wipes it would have been less messy. Garlic mushroom: 9/10 would have again for sure! It was very garlicky and good but I would have loved more bread or an option to buy more of it to dip in the sauce. Because we went during the festival weekend it was very busy we had to wait ~45 minutes for a table for two. The wait was well worth it since it gave us more time to explore the neighborhood. I was so happy to see that Taste is still alive and doing well in South Haven. It's been 11 years since I visited this town and this restaurant. Of course I had to dine here again since I had a great experience last time, and it did not disappoint. Austin was our server and took great care of us. He was friendly and personable. My husband and I started out with martini cocktails, a paper plane (bourbon drink) for him and a blueberry lemon one for me. Both were tasty. We decided to share four small plates for dinner - cilantro tuna roll, seafood dip, blue gill and jerk shrimp. Each plate was delicious. Food and cocktails on point! This restaurant is more of a "small bites" type of vibe, and always very busy, even on days when downtown isn't busy. The hummus plate left a little to be desired. The garlic was a bit too strong, and the portion of hummus was very small, but I got about 50 pieces of pita bread. The staff seemed very indifferent to whether or not you are upset about an hour wait, but I happen to find a couple of bar seats open, so that didn't matter much. The peach cobbler however, was amazing. If my review was based solely on the cobbler, they would get five stars, or if it was based on everything else it would get probably three, so I'll split the difference and say four. read more

The jerk shrimp was fantastic. So good we went twice in two days. The first day food was better than the second day. I wonder if chef was different. The coconut rice on Sunday was less flavorful. I came here for a bachelorette party and it was easy to get everyone something they would enjoy. We got several appetizers to try and highly recommend the Mac and cheese. We had a reservation which I would suggest if you are going with a larger group. We had 8 in total and would've been waiting a long time without planning ahead. The bread and butter were fantastic and the potato pancakes with a chili applesauce were the surprise hit of the night. The sushi is just fine, but I'd recommend sticking with their more traditional American items because they do those better. The service was attentive and kind. She was able to give good recommendations off the drink menu and helped to make sure we got enough food for the table. On Saturday nights they have a two hour limit at the table and they did very kindly remind us of that as we neared it, but it was plenty of time for our group. I had high expectations here based on a family recommendation but they were definitely exceeded. We showed up at 4:15 on a Saturday afternoon in July and were told it would be a 75 minute wait--which we were willing to do. Then the hostess offered us the private room, starting immediately, if we thought we could be done by 5:45. (!!) She definitely didn't have to do that --she could have easily had us wait. But that little gesture was just above and beyond. The food did not disappoint either--everyone found a specialty wine or cocktail that they were excited about and although we were only there for appetizers, we were impressed with the food as well. Let's start with the great stuff: -- Filet bites - garlic & peppercorn crusted beef tenderloin with bourbon glaze - all of the flavors combined on some very tender meat made this a great pick -- Coconut rice - once you eat some, you just want more...absolutely loved this side dish -- Server was great and gave me refills on my drink without needing to be asked Lowlights: -- French fries - up until this point in my life, fries from non-fast-food establishments have usually ranged from incredible to just okay, but I'll still eat it if I'm hungry. This might have been one of the very few instances where I was hungry but refused to eat them. Presentation was nice and the fries looked the part, but the actual taste and texture were a huge flop - poorly seasoned, lacked crispiness, and tasted very potatoey. -- Spicy Tuna sushi - it doesn't taste bad, but given my reference point of what sushi should be based on all of the sushi I've had in the past, the amount of tuna in each piece relative to the rice is really a travesty -- The full rack of ribs tasted okay but the $41 price point for that level of taste is not okay (disclaimer: you do get two sides for that price) Overall, Taste was an uninspiring experience. Taking into consideration the two hour wait to get a table and then the high cost of food relative to the taste, it's not a place I would consider for a repeat visit given the other options in the South Haven area. The highlights I called out were fantastic but everything else was lacking. The fact that the fries weren't even done properly despite being probably the easiest thing to make weighed heavily in my disappointment with the restaurant. They have a prime location being so close to the beach, which I imagine is a big factor in driving foot traffic to their restaurant. read more

The location is right in the heart of South Haven, and there are plenty of stores to peruse as you wait for your table. The wait for Saturday night was 2 hours, and in the end I didn't think it was worth it. The positives: The space lends itself to a nice dinner out, and our server was amazing! Unfortunately, the food, overall, was disappointing. The only dish I liked was the filet mignon bites. They were tender and flavorful! The potato pancakes were thick and not crispy. There were some sauces on top but it just made the dish heavier. The fries weren't crispy. The shrimp dishes were decent, but nothing special. The spicy tuna roll is just tuna and rice with eel sauce. Since it's a tapas restaurant, the portion sizes are quite small, and you'll need quite a few plates to fill up. read more

These service and ambiance are the saving graces for this place. Food: Potato Pancakes: thick and gummy. Flavor was alright, but was just really looking for that satisfying crunch. Cuban Shrimp: flavour was good. However, it seemed like the shrimp was just sauteed in the sauce. The shrimp texture was lacking. The sauce was good, but I didn't really feel the "Cuban" from it? Jerk Shrimp: same as Cuban shrimp. Flavour was great and I loved the coconut rice that came with it. Shrimp texture was lacking. Would have been better if grilled. Filet Bites: tender, flavourful steak bites. Best bites of the evening. Spicy Tuna Roll: don't get the maki sushi here. Literally tuna and plain rice. Not proper sushi. Why the eel sauce in a spicy tuna roll??? How do you make Americanized sushi more American? Sweet-n-Smoky Ribs: Ribs were tender. Bbq sauce was way sweet, very mid. Do not recommend. I went to taste with my wife and friends on a Saturday night. The wait was about two hours, so we put our names down and we spent the time exploring the beautiful downtown area. Finally it was time to eat and we were seated quickly. Our server was friendly, attentive, and checked in with us frequently. The restaurant itself was clean and has the aesthetic to be a great date night spot. I started with the 'bubbles' Martini, which was alright. It was mostly a one note cocktail with a heavy artificial peach flavor. While the chambord was clearly present, it was overpowered by the peach vodka. The filet bites were definitely a high point. They were very tender and seasoned well. The jerk shrimp was flavorful with a hint of spice and paired oh so well with the coconut rice! The potato pancakes were crisp and well seasoned. They were paired with an apple chutney. I just wish the chutney was a little less sweet since it started to overpower the other flavors. The cuban shrimp was alright and would have benefited from some more seasoning. Ribs were tender but the BBQ sauce definitely leaned a lot into the sweet side. I did have some fries on the side and they were soft and potatoey. The fries were seasoned well but I wish they were thinner and crispier. We were looking for good food that wasn't a burger and fries. We found it! The small plates were generously sized, and the combination of flavors was surprising. First, the best thing on the table is about near everything. But memorable was the potato pancake plate and the bluegill and the soup of the night was beer, cheese soup, which was, filled with flavor and a touch of bacon. At least I think it was bacon. Easy four and a half stars. We drove about an hour to find something new. Boy did we find a great spot! The Yelpers before us are definitely onto something! Even though it was a Saturday in prime lake season, we only had a short wait. Tapas/small plates is (again, I know) one of our favorites. Checking out the menu, we narrowed it down to four choices. The filet bites, bluegill, sweet & spicy shrimp and seafood dip. Four out of four! Filet bites were tender, well seasoned and the bourbon glaze topped it off nicely. The bluegill was super crispy and flaky. The lemon dill aioli with it was perfect to dip it in. The shrimp were a bit sweet and not a lot of heat. Great flavor! The seafood dip was amazing! Hot, cheesy and loaded with seafoods. Served with nice toasted pits triangles (honestly really happy with that). Will get that one again for sure! We had a bit of a service/timing snafu. That was immediately rectified to our satisfaction! I also had the Detroit Dirty martini which was great! The bread and butter pickles in place of olives was the perfect accompaniment.
