(Last visited July 13, 2023.) The cheesesteak game in southeast Michigan is pretty impressive, so I've made it a mission of mine to check out every one of these spots that someone recommends to me. So here we are today in Ann Arbor to check out Mr. Spots! Atmosphere/Appearance: It's as simple as you want it to be and as unchanged as ever. University of Michigan sports memorabilia and pictures plaster the walls. There's the quintessential drop-ceiling, light wooden paneling on the walls, rounded bench seats and TVs for menus. I don't remember music playing, but there had to be, right? Service: You just go to the counter and order your food then it's brought right out to you. Nothing crazy and we had no issues. Food: I started off with their Philly Original which pays homage to, well, you can guess. Lol. Their own cheesesteak version has like, marinara, onions, peppers and all kinds of stuff on it, but I'm here for the Philly! I got their 10" and the bread was soft, the meat was cooked well, the American cheese-wiz was tasty, but it was fine. It was pretty standard for a cheesesteak, nothing crazy. I was also able to try their Suicide Sauce with both a waffle fry and a wing. It was HOT. About a 7 on the Weavi Heat Scale (I.Y.K.Y.K.). I could definitely handle it and went back for extra dips. The sauce had plenty of good flavor alongside the heat. Value: Cheap eats here man. I'm happy Mr. Spot's has been able to keep the prices low-enough for college students to be able to have a decent meal here without breaking their bank. In conclusion, I liked it here! Would I go out of my way looking for Tom Brady's favorite cheesesteak that got him through college? Nah, but the food here IS GOOD! I wanna come back and check out their other flavors of wings! But there's a reason Mr. Spots has been here so long! Make sure you come and check out why. read more

This place is located on State St on SW corner of Hill St, South of the University of Michigan main campus. There is no parking as is the case around Ann Arbor. We were fortunate to find street parking on Oakland Ave to the East of the restaurant. They claim this is Tom Brady's "favorite cheesesteak." There is a lot of memorabilia on the wall (see photos) including some of Michigan bball but surprisingly no Fab 5. I posted the current menu. As for the food, it was good but not the greatest. I recommend getting a side order of the hot sauce and jalapeños to add. The cheesesteak was good but the chicken Philly was a little bland. That is where the side of the hot sauce come in, worth the nominal additional cost. read more

Their Philly was good, cheesy, juicy, flavorful, and comforting. I ordered the 10 inch Philly Original and a side of chicken tenders and a side of ranch. I ordered via DoorDash because I was having a tough time staying sane after work. I was waking up around 5-5:30 which is 2-2:30AM PST to workout and head to the office which means by 3PM EST, I was itching to hurry up back to my hotel room. Anyway. I am glad I ordered from here that night. I wanted something easy to eat and filling. I think my meal allowance is $70 a day but I didn't come close to the amount because I skip breakfast to not feel lethargic at work and I cannot eat lunch and dinner because though I have a weight problem, I cannot eat that much food in a short span. How odd! I try not to eat so late. The Philly cheesesteak was delicious. I throughly enjoyed the chicken tenders and ranch, too. It was not over cooked and they're rather thin which made it not overly over the top as a side. This place, Mr. Spots definitely hit the spot. read more

I kind of get the vibe that this place is a "cult classic", especially among the students. I tried for the first time on what I imagine was a busy night - we ordered delivery (via DoorDash, the direct website's delivery ordering didn't extend to our Ann Arbor address) a couple hours before the Detroit Lions hosted their first playoff game in 30+ years - Go Lions!!! Food arrived still nice and warm. We got some hot sauce wings, some garlic parmesan wings, waffle fries, a 6in philly original, and tossed salad. The wings were good! Not the best ever in my opinion, and small/medium sized, but good amount of sauce (not too much or too little) and good chicken. I liked both flavors but preferred the hot sauce ones. The waffle fries were excellent - crispy and fluffy at the same time. I tried a bite of the philly original and it was ok - looked kind of small to me but I appreciated that it didn't bulk up size with just a lot of bread. Salad was ok - did its job of getting us some greens, and definitely better than no salad option / salads at other wing spots. Overall I enjoyed Mr Spots but maybe don't totally get all the hype all the way. read more

Mr Spots is hands down one of the best hole in the wall gems in Ann Arbor. I usually get the steak hoagie (minus onions) and a sack of waffle fries. This is an absolutely delectable combination. The cheese on the hoagie is perfectly melted and piping hot, with the fresh tomatoes and lettuce as a nice contrast. The line can be long at times (especially when there's a sports game going on), but Mr Spots is definitely worth the wait. read more

My fiance and I came to Ann Arbor for a weekend trip and stopped by here because we heard Tom Brady liked it, and my fiance loves Tom Brady. You walk in and it's very casual, with cool photos and articles of different athletes hung on the wall. We got to order right away. Service was very friendly and patient as we figured out what to order. We ultimately got a Philly cheesesteak, chili cheese fries, bbq wings, and a lemonade. All were simple but tasty! I dig dingy college food joints and was truly hoping to love this spot. Wings and cheesesteaks? Sign me up! One might suggest that Mr Spots makes good drunk food, but the flaws in their main offerings would not pass muster even if I were three sheets to the wind. The only thing that elevated my experience beyond one star was their willingness to serve my six piece wing order as all flats, without an added premium. Flats rule. Drummettes drool. Actually, I should not cast aspersions about drummettes. The more people eat 'em the more flats are left for me and the rest of the chicken wing cognoscenti. But I digress. The best part of dingy college food joints is typically the low prices. I get that food costs are drastically on the rise, and wing prices in particular have gone through the roof. So I did not let a $10 order of six wings dissuade me. However paying an additional buck fifty for blue cheese and celery, felt punitive. And north of $7 for a six inch cheesesteak? If the food is good, I'm certainly willing to pay for it. Except the food is not good. It's not just not good for the price. It would not be good for even half of the price. To be fair, the wings smelled great. I ordered the food to go, but parked right outside the front door. It was literally seconds between getting the hot food in my hands and opening the styrofoam lid in the card. The wings looked great too! Large, well-sauced, and with crispy edges. While the wings were certainly crispy at some point in their lives, something awful must have happened to them along way. At the tips of the wings, there was still a little crunch, however the skin of the wings was flabby AF. Additionally the wings were barely warm in their center. It seemed as if these wings had been fried in advance and were simply reheated. My wing loving daughter, who I've seen tear through a pile of wings, tried one and simply could not go on. Then she tried a bite of the cheesesteak, and was done with that too after her first taste. I cannot abide wasting food, so I dutifully finished our order, but it was without an iota of pleasure. The cheesesteak improved a bit when it was dragged through the wing sauce and drizzled with the blue cheese dressing. But even that magical combination of flavors could not make the sandwich anything better than edible. When I think that people are ordering wings at Mr. Spots when they could be going to the newer place down Packard, I weep a bit for humanity. With chicken wings being ever more precious and in reduced supply, I feel it's more important than ever for wing places to respect their ingredients and do good things with these delectable morsels. This was more than a little disappointing. At least now I know and never have to return. read more

OMG! Soooooo good. If you could only get one item off their menu, make sure it's the cheesesteak with extra cheese. The meat was tender, the cheese was cheesing, and the roll was soft. I also got the fries which were delivered cold, but seasoned. I'm that toxic person who has to get something sweet when I eat something salty/savory so I also ordered the chocolate malt milkshake and that was great as well. If only my stomach was big enough to finish it all, but at least I have leftovers. This was easily one of the best cheesesteaks I've had outside of Philly. read more

My husband, practically an AA lifer, commented that he'd never had Mr. Spots before so we decided to give it a try for takeout dinner one day. I ordered a cheesesteak and chilli cheese fries. My mouth was already watering waiting for those ridiculously cheesy waffle fries and I eagerly opened my container when it arrived only to find....potato chips? "I...don't think these are fries?" I said to my husband. He looked at his. "Hmm, no, they look like ruffles?" They were coated in a ton of cheese, so that was right, but the rest? Not so much. We looked at the menu to see if somehow some cheesy chips were accidentally subbed in but only fries were on the menu. We were seriously perplexed. My husband even called them to ask and they confirmed that they were out of their regular fries and subbed these in instead. Which is FINE. We realize that things are in short supply these days or back ordered. We wouldn't have complained! However, we were a little bummed that this wasn't articulated to us when we ordered and just subbed in without letting us know. I took a bite of my chips and cheese and the chips were just SO salty with the cheese. It didn't work. If we had been told I would have definitely ordered a different side like onion rings. Plus $7 for potato chips with some cheese on it was not exactly an ideal price point. I also got a 6inch Philly original and it didn't really do it for me either. Now, I'm a big wing fan so I'd be more than happy to go back and try them again. I realize everyone has an off day. Customer service doesn't exist and pay close attention to detail for each sandwich as it's non traditional and they don't care to correct or assist if you may make an error. Affordable cheesesteaks and fried food, what more could you ask for? I picked up a few cheesesteaks to go and they weren't soggy even after a 15 minute drive home. Their onions rings were what dreams are made of, and I ate half of them during the ride home. The staff was also super friendly during pick-up. I would've killed for a place like Mr Spots during college, but I will settle for the occasional indulgence in my adult years. read more

This place was unassuming from the outside, but super neat when you walk in. The owner is obviously a Michigan/ Patriots fan because his Tom Brady fan gear is all over. I have to say, I wasn't expecting great things from this place, and they wowed me. Expect to fight for seating or take it to go on game days- there isn't a lot of "real estate" but it makes it up for it in food taste. I got the cheese steak with sauce on the side & onion rings. Hubs and I shared a chocolate shake and I munched on a chocolate chip cookie on the way to the hockey game. The cheesesteak was cooked amazingly, but when I picked it up, some hot grease spilled out of the meat onto my lap, so that wasn't cool, but it tasted great. It had an amazing savory taste. I thought they should have offered some au jus with it, that would have sent it over the top. I wasn't fond of the watery marinara and glad I got it on the side. The shake was great, but not $5 great. Same with the onion rings, nothing to write to mom about but a plentiful serving that we couldn't finish. A little disappointing after seeing all the great reviews. First none of the staff were masked in an incredibly small space during the Omicron variant COVID wave. Second I ordered chili cheese fries and cheese fries. What I got when I got home were chili cheese chips and cheese chips. When I called they claimed they were fries but they seemed to be generic Ruffles. Not waffle fries. I understand there are supply chain issues. I don't understand them failing to tell customers they were substituting the fries with potato chips. The Philly Originals were good but not quite enough to merit a return visit for me. read more

Mr. Spots is located on State St, conveniently along the route from the Big House back to campus. That said, this is the perfect place to stop for a post-game meal. The interior of the restaurant is completely covered in various Michigan athletics pictures, posters, and memorabilia, alongside TVs playing the game. It's perfect for keeping the game spirit going on your way home! It does tend to get busy on game days, but the food is worth the wait. You order at the counter, snag a table if available (there aren't very many when busy), and clean up your own table. When you were Tom Brady's favorite restaurant while he was on campus, you know I'm going to be a fan. When you were Trey Burke's favorite wing spot while he was on campus, you know I'm going to be a fan. Talk about some Michigan legends! Have a meal of champions at Mister Spots and your choices mainly consist of Philly cheesesteaks, wings, chicken fingers, chicken sandwiches, and waffle fries. I'm a big fan of their BBQ wings. I'm also a big fan of their waffle fries. This time around, I made the mistake of getting the Philly cheesesteak and the cheese fries. Unlike most Philly cheesesteaks, Mister Spot's version has marinara sauce. Interesting idea but I've had a good deal of Philly cheesesteak's and this one's nothing special. Don't go with the cheese fries either. I love their waffle fries but their cheese fries have nacho cheese on top. Just not the best choice of cheese, not even close. I wish they used a different type of cheese. With that being said, they're open until midnight and Mister Spots is what got Tom Brady through school so I support you! read more

Delicious!! I can't believe that I've never been here before. The turkey Hoagie was amazing.. the fries were the best that I've ever had..

Place: This place is a nice oncampus but further away from the diag (which is central campus). It is a "hidden" late night snack. There are a lot of seating for the space they have. Service: The service is good overall and you just order and pick up the food. Yeah the vibe is really friendly! Food/price: The food is really good and it is known for their wings! I do have to warn you that the spicy wings ARE SOOO spicy for me. I enjoy the wings and I got fries with cheese. To be honest the fries were drenched in cheese so it got soggy fast (which I did not really like). Next time I would ask for cheese on the side :) Audience: this can good for families, but I feel like it is definitely for friends that want a late night snack. One of the best spots to get a bite to eat in the heart of Ann Arbor. With selections essentially ranging from Jimmy John's or a pan pizza on the way to the stadium from Domino's, Mr. Spots takes the cake if you're looking to fuel up for game day. They're known for the Philly Cheesesteaks and waffle fries, so that's what my buddies and I got. Comes on a classic hoagie bun with a basket of waffle fries and it runs you just under $15 for the combo. It's packed in there though with limited seating, so if it's a busy day before a game, you probably won't find seating (or will likely have to share with others). Bathroom line is always packed and people often stop by to get water, but the food tends to come out pretty quickly and you can order, eat, and go in a span of 15-20 minutes. Definitely quality food and it's cool to revel at all the players and coaches that dedicate an autograph to Mr. Spots. A must-try if you're in Ann Arbor for an extended period of time. read more
