I ordered a 16oz root beer and a chili dog for $4. I do not know anywhere else where you can get those two items for $4. The root beer was excellent not to sweet and perfect amount of sweetness to root beer flavor. The chili dog was pretty average no real snap in the dog and the chili was ok. You can get onions and or mustard if you wish, I got mine with neither. Again at these prices you cannot really complain.

American uses boring "sweet onions" while Lafayette uses "SPANISH onions " which have more kick. But the real difference is the Chili, and that's the reason for the split & disagreement. Lafayette has a MEATER chili, meaning they don't skimp on quality ingredients. My best friend and I used to skip school in the 80's just to eat here. And the bathroom is COOL! It's like an adventure! The other main difference is American Coney has open seating because REAL Detroiters don't eat there. When interviewed there's a real character difference between owners. Grace Keros, the 3rd gen owner of American Coney likes to talk sh1t. You don't need to do that when your product is superior. Every interview she gives is sour grapes. We both ordered their New York Strip entree and got two sides with the meals. We never really think to get steak at places that aren't specifically steakhouses, but we were so glad we did here! The flavor was amazing and we both agreed they were cooked exactly how we wanted them. We also had the mac n cheese, fries, asparagus, and caesar salad for sides.
