What's better to eat at a bar than a hamburger????
    Susan W.

Met a young woman who has been employed here 15 years!!!! Boy, that's loyalty!!!!! Very nice, very professional. Full bar, a lot of variety in terms of whiskeys, tequilas, gins, and rum. They had some delicious sounding gumbo and I passed so I hope I make it back sometime. The burger and fries was very good toasted bun nice crisp vegetables, great dill pickles.... The meat patty was quality meat but certainly not hand formed or freshly made. The fries were not greasy, fried crisply and perfectly. I don't believe they're freshly cut. Great atmosphere. Brick walls with lots of old photos which makes it look quaint. My darling partner and I enjoyed our lunch and we will try to make it back sometime!!!

Again, the best CHILIE CHEESE FRIES!!!! Good lord they are amazing. Customer service is always amazing (Malie I think) was grade A! Truly come here absolutely amazing

Jenny made me the best old fashioned. I normally prefer high dining but this quiet, quaint, and beautiful establishment really struck home. The atmosphere and kind hearted staff really sealed the deal for me. Will be back, if Jenny is working, ask for an old fashioned. 12/10

    Cheap cocktails!

I came here for the first time this weekend while in Ann Arbor for the Cinetopia film fest. We had drinks at Beer Grotto and then wanted to go to one more place. My friend who lives in town suggested Old Town. Their cocktails are $6-7 (very reasonably priced). I ordered a Dark and Stormy and it was pretty good. I'd like to come back here for food sometime too, the menu looked good. They must serve food late too because we were there around 1am on a Friday night and food orders were still being served.

The Old Town is a grub pub that I have been to many times years ago. It has been over 10 years since I last visited the Old Town. Visited March 16, 2024. Had three drinks and lunch. Craft Beer I had was Edmund Fitzgerald. Very good. The food I had was the beef hamburger. I ordered burger medium. Arrived WELL DONE. In most instances I would have sent it back. However, it was 2:00 in the afternoon and this was my first lick of food all day and I was too hungry to wait around. Ordinarily, hunger will disguise flavor, but not today. What the burger lacked in proper cooking, it missed more on account of lacking in flavor. The burger was flavorless and disappointing. Food aside, the beer was Very Good. The service was outstanding. Staff is wonderful and friendly. I give the Beer a 4.5. I give the service a 5. I give the Burger a 1.5. I give a 5 for ambience. Overall I give a 4 for the entire experience. I will give the Old Town another chance.

Street closed off for patio seating

Standard pub style bar with your run of the mill bar food. The beer and food menus were on the limited side but they got the job done. We used the QR code contactless menu, and all of the waitresses were wearing masks. The street was closed off for patio seating, and the tables were equipped with umbrellas for shade. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back for any of the food in particular, but if you're craving a quick burger and a beer in a low key bar, then this would be a solid option to consider.

Hamburger, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, Kaiser roll, steak fries, and spear pickle
    Robert W.

People kept recommending the food here so I came hungry 12AM on a Friday night and was able to get street parking. I ordered the 7oz hamburger with lettuce, tomato, and American cheese. Noteworthy is that they use patties from Knight's Market, which you can tell is high quality burger because it taste good and feels soothing to the stomach even the next morning. For $10.50 without cheese, it's an excellent deal and it comes on a Kaiser roll, steak fries, and a pickle spear. They did over do the fries a bit.

This Sunday, my mom invited myself and my siblings to join her for brunch. The ambience was amazing - with lovely natural lighting and gorgeous table settings. The menu makes every dish seem mouthwatering and delicious. When the plates came out, they were gorgeous and the food looked so inviting. Unfortunately, the taste was completely lacking. If you're going to charge the prices they're charging, the flavor should be amazing in every single bite. We sampled four different dishes, and none blew me away. Some, were even borderline "bad." Here's a rundown: mushroom pizza - the description makes it seem like it will be cheesy and full of flavor, but it was very one note duck confit pizza - had three pieces of duck on it and was otherwise covered in hot peppers lemon blueberry pancake - more of a skillet cake - sauce was the best part, otherwise dry on the bottom Raclette burger - $30 which is almost comparable in price to a burger I had at The Four Seasons in Maui. That burger, was worth every penny. This one had absolutely no flavor. The meat tasted like mush - definitely lacked seasoning, and there was not a speck of cheese to be found. If you're going to call a burger a raclette, it should be oozing with cheese. grilled Romaine salad - leaves were bitter and the dressing again, looked delicious, but had no flavor. The flavors did not compliment each other at all - with the pickled grapes, taking away from the dish and contrasting very starkly against the rotten tasting lettuce Brown sugar oat milk latte - really the only thing that delivered both on looks and on flavor. Sadly, not high on my list of places to return. It kind of made me think of Vegas: lots of pomp and glam which momentarily distracts you into thinking you're having the best time of your life. But in retrospect, not very fulfilling.

For background, my boyfriend and I are from Ohio and ate here around the same time last year and have been talking about our experience ever since. My boyfriend suggested we go and get Spencer again for lunch and saw that they do not take reservations online. That is important to this review, that they don't take lunch reservations online. We got to Spencer around 2:06 and it was busy which obviously is no issue at all. When we first talk to a server, she said it would be about a ten, fifteen minute wait. Then a man came over and said about 40 minutes, again no problem at all. The issue is that they don't "do callbacks", so they don't take your number. You are expected to literally wait around the restaurant in order to hold your place, however the man said to just come back within 40 minutes. We were willing to wait, again with it no issue at all as we were expecting to wait anyway. We walked around downtown for about 30 minutes and went back just to check in. The same man said it would take a little longer, 15 minutes but that we were first in line and would be sat first. Again this is no issue, you can't gage on how long people will stay and eat so we were willing to wait. We let him know that we will be waiting outside then so we don't miss our reservation. A couple were actually in the same boat as us waiting outside. Finally, after about another addition 30 minutes a couple left the restaurant so the couple outside with us walked in and we were behind them. The man saw us, apologized and said they were in front of us because they "made a reservation online." Then crossed off their name below us on a sheet of paper. I'm sorry? I checked and you cannot make a reservation until 5 PM. So what in the actual world was that? I wish I was kidding and I know how I sound here but it was so obvious that he let them in before us. At this point we were in a catch 22, leave after waiting for an hour and thirty minutes at this point just to have them come out and look for us or stay for another promised "fifteen minutes". We waited since we did drive 2 hours and 30 minutes specifically for this restaurant. Finally, after almost an hour and forty five minutes we were sat. Almost half the menu was sold out. I just HAVE to laugh at this point. Apologies were said and at this point like what were we supposed to do? We ordered everything that was left, bread, olives, salami with carrots and a celery salad which they had to make a substitute with the salad. Whatever I would've eaten scraps at this point. I had one glass of wine and after all was said is done, they gave us last call. I am still laughing at this point. We ate our small dishes and promptly asked for the check, which was 58 dollars including gratuity. I am not even going to mention the countless people we talked to outside asking us to hurry up and eat fast so they can get in. This review is for no one BUT the management at Spencer. As someone who works in the service industry and understands set backs, you NEED to figure out your reservation system. Either you have one or you don't. Talk to your staff when these things happens so they don't lie to costumers when they accidentally seat someone before them. I loved the food, loved the atmosphere, but my God please figure out the seating and waiting system. I wish you all the very best!

AMBIANCE = 4 I have read reviews that inside is dated. I am ok with it. The changes going on in Ann Arbor. It is nice to see stability. Be thankful a place weathering city transformation and not closing thier doors. If things get renovated so do the prices. With the price of food... 2. FOOD/DRIINKS = 4 I had Salomon. Other two had White Fish. London Broil. No one had any complaints. Food was well flavored and enjoyed the meal. Beer was Two Hearted on tap. Good. Red wine was house and had robust flavor. 3. SERVICE = 5 Our server was on top of everything. Friendly. Not overbearing. Drinks came in good order as well as food. 4. BATHROOM = 4 Clean and maintained. 5. PRICING = 3 On part for the times we live in. Inflation of the last 4 years created new norms. One area that tends to change is tipping. With wages for michigan getting to $15.00 all that has to play into pricing. So I give cash tips. The whole thing of putting tip pricing on the bill. I think many see it. 1. Brussel sprout appt. $15.00. 2. Meals were $27.00. If you went with steaks things get pricey. But if one follows news the beef herds are being reduced. So days of low cost beef meals are in the past. We just do not eat out as much so when we do it is a treat. 6. OBSERVATION The bar area was full. What I liked for a Thursday night is number of trades people at the bar. Parking is adequate. Not sure what a Friday or Saturday would look like... We were seated at table near bar area. One comment was we would have choose a booth the next time. Noise level in our area was loud. 7. The onion rings were awesome, fried artichoke hearts, you can skip... for the burgers, I would recommend you stick to classic - meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onions. We all got it med, the meat was juicy as usual and we all enjoyed it. The draft beer that I ordered was flat unfortunately. When we got our check I noticed that there was a "convenience fee 3%", which is applied to your meal prices only. I'm not a fan of convenience fee, if they are trying to offset the credit card charges or adjust their prices due to the inflation or higher material costs, they should just raise their prices to offset those. I also didn't see anything about convenience fee being added, granted if it was in a smaller print so I could have missed it. It seems everyone is adding on convenience fee to everything.
