Ann Arbor is always such an interesting spot for a night out. During the school year, the streets are teeming with college kids bouncing around, which of course is what you would expect from a great college town. What I do love about Ann Arbor is that they balance out the drunk haunts of young adults with great restaurants and high end bars for the people looking for more than a pitcher of cheap beer. Rabbit Hole is one of those spots. Down the same little alley way as Circ Bar, this underground bar is tucked away, stone hallways and open up and lead to different openings that provide seating, a dance floor and an amazingly stocked bar. If you like bourbon you will love this spot. Our bartender was fantastic, absolutely worked with me on working out a drink. I know I took a pic of an espresso martini, but my drink was made perfect also. Another nice surprise was that it wasn't some crazy price on the drink (I mean any crazier than other places and quite cheaper than around my home), especially for Ann Arbor. Walking away from the bar is a dance floor, and surrounding it are booths in a separate rooms and tables on a level up from the dance floor. There are also two hallways that lead to more booths and tables in different areas of the bar. As you can imagine this is a huge place. We came on a Friday and it wasn't very busy, but school is out and the weather had just broke so not surprising. Another place actually open later, I needed to come and try. Rabbit hole definitely has a unique look. It reminded me of visits through caves I just needed some Stalactites. Definitely a bit confusing to figure out where to go. I wish I had been given some direction. There is seating against the wall throughout the winding halls. There is a dance floor and a couple bars. I loved the look which would definitely bring me back if I had also loved the Cocktails. The drink I ordered was way too sweet. I was underwhelmed. Most of their drinks looked on the sweeter side even the bartender mentioned. For my second I just ordered a glass of bubbly. It was also on the sweeter side but an improvement. For the prices, I really don't want to have to get up, find my way back to the bar to order my drink, then walk back to my seat avoiding the people and trying not to spill. read more

This is such a fun hip place in Ann Arbor. There is bar when you first walk in but if you continue on you will find a dance floor and another bar. They had a really great espresso martini which are currently my favorite drinks! They did have a few booths out in the hallway if you just want to sit and chat but if you want to dance the dance floor was small but sooo fun. Great place to take out of town guests if you are looking so something in A2. The crowd was a mix of ages (not just all college age people). read more

Saw the photos of the Rabbit Hole and had to give it a try! Upon arrival the atmosphere is great... tables tucked into a cavernous-feeling room, and the bartenders were friendly and helpful with what to order. Those are the things that earned them a couple of stars. Our drinks however... were really lacking. We got the Koel Bird and the Smoky Fairy and neither of us liked them. The Smoky Fairy tasted like a bland Arnold Palmer and the Koel Bird was a draft margarita with some spices dumped on top. We drank half and ended up abandoning the rest. Unfortunately atmosphere alone isn't enough to get us spending $15 on cocktails so I don't think we'll be back! read more

It was amazing! Teddy was our bartender and really made the evening. We were in town for my birthday weekend. The location was fun. It was lowkey until about 10. Instead of choosing from the menu I just asked Teddy to make drinks. Then she was awesome to make me drinks based on color and I ended up drinking the whole rainbow. My only regret is living over 2 hours away. Definitely should check it out. Definitely ask for Teddy. read more

This little tucked away bar in Ann Arbor is a gem! I love all of the brick in this bar, it just gives a different kind of experience. Plus it was nice and cool in the tunnel. Located just a few blocks away from Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor, Root is a moody, cozy hidden gem in the basement of Circ Bar, adjacent to the Blind Pig. But it has its own separate entrance, although you can get to Root from Circ Bar as well, but it's an entirely different vibe and feels so separate to the outside, upstairs, and everything else around it in Ann Arbor! True to its name, you feel properly below ground, as if you're hanging with all the roots of trees and plants. The walls are textured and further give that sense of being in the "dirt" and there are so many caverns that open up into different seating areas throughout the space. Things are dimly lit and because of all these different seating spaces, it never gets too loud either. It's just such an experience for the senses and was so much fun to exist in! From the bartenders, it seems like they often do get a lot of the college students/young adults coming down from Circ Bar ordering shots or straightforward drinks and are delighted when they get customers who actually want to order from their curated cocktail list. They were happy to accommodate my non-alcoholic request as well and made me up a drink that was very delightful and refreshing to the palette. Absolutely love it here and recommend it for anyone looking for a spot that is a bit more mature, while still feeling hip and cool (this last sentence makes me feel ancient LMAO). read more

Root caught my eye because of their revamped food menu in partnership with Takoi. We basically ordered everything available on the menu. It's super casual - it's best to order both drinks & food at the bar then find a table. It sounds like sometimes they have QR codes on the table + online ordering wasn't open when we went on a Sat. night). *Som Tum Thai (Green Papaya pounded in the mortar and pestle with garlic, Thai chilies, long beans, tomato, peanuts, palm sugar, fish sauce, tamarind, and lime. Spicy! [VGO][GF]) - AWESOME flavor on this & yes, it was spicy but so good. Really hit the spot, I could get this over & over again just for something light & fresh. I'll definitely be ordering this to-go sometime. *Crispy Shrimp (Shrimp wrapped in wonton with pickled vegetables and sweet chili sauce.) - kind of like a shrimp egg roll - no complaints. If you're looking for something more like bar food, this would be it! *Stir-Fried Corn (Sweet corn stir-fried with blueberries, Thai basil, cilantro, pistachio curry paste, and crispy rice crumble. [VG][GF]) - OK super pleasantly surprised by the flavors on this. I was like corn with blueberries?? This was definitely a savory dish and quite good. *Fried Chicken Sandwich (Thai fried chicken thigh on griddled brioche with papaya salad, sweet chili garlic, coconut milk ranch, pickled jalapeños, peanuts, and cilantro.) - This was my main and if you're going to get anything, get this! Perfectly fried and crispy chicken thigh with Thai spin. Yum. *Green Curry (Spicy coconut milk curry with fried HiO farm koginut squash, lime leaf, Thai basil, golden raisin, and fried shallot. [VG]) - Compared to traditional Thai Green Curry, it's not as soupy. We didn't find that we needed the extra rice we ordered on the side, it's also basically like tempura squash on the top which is PLENTIFUL so you'll be full. *Grilled Short Rib (Korean cut short rib marinated in turmeric spiced sweetened condensed milk, charcoal grilled and served with peanut curry and marinated cucumber and shallot.) - If you can't handle spice, this is the dish to get! Because of the hard sear on it, I expected this to be tough BUT it was actually very tasty and well cooked. Super creative cocktails but not my favorite I've had in town, but still definitely worth a stop! *Beyond the Pines (Stirred - Rich, Autumnal, Savor y, Baking Spices Knob Creek Rye | Laird 's Apple Brandy | Yellow Char treuse Pinecone | Angostura | Peychaud's | Smoked Pear) - I mean this had a baby candied pinecone! This place is located just a few blocks from Main Street. Located under Circ bar it has an outside gathering area right before you head "underground" to the Actual Rabbit Hole! Feels like you're walking through tunnels under Ann Arbor. Bartenders are great! Super unique spot in downtown Ann Arbor. Loved the atmosphere! The history of this place is really cool. there's live music! you could dance or sit in big booths or around the bar area. Real cool Ann Arbor vibe. Root is an awesome speakeasy style cocktail bar hidden beneath the streets of Ann Arbor. When you finally find the entrance (Root is tucked away down a little driveway/alley right off the sidewalk you would normally pass right by without a notice) you walk a handful of steps down to the host station and they kindly direct you to your table. Root is beautifully decorated brick and stone lined in Renaissance architecture ceilings and doorways which gives a feeling of being overseas. The staff is friendly and informative. The ambiance was perfect for date night, a group of people, or to simple escape the sunshine and heat of outside for a refreshing, craft cocktail. Music was playing on the other side of the Root. We sat on the bar side, which advertises tiki-style drinks. We are excited to come back to Root! read more

We went for a work event so took over the entire venue - the service was absolutely impressive from top to bottom. We had a couple hundred people there and things flowed smoothly in regards to being able to grab a delicious cocktail or delightful bite. Speaking of the food - wow!! 5 stars all around - usually when a place has "small bites" they are meh at best but everything offered was something I'd be excited to eat even at the fanciest restaurant! Root turned out to be the perfect spot to wrap up a recent night out. After dinner at a nice restaurant, DH and I decided to try one more place. After eschewing the wait at another local cocktail bar, we decided to swing by Root. Located underneath the Circ bar, walking through the courtyard and coming inside is like discovering a new secret. We carefully made our way into the bar, which was lit with gently glowing candles and dim lighting. I haven't been able to find the history of the building, but this place feels like an old wine cellar. Large brick arches create an expanse of space, and small alcoves dot the perimeter for dining. At the bar, my husband and I ordered some signature cocktails and took a seat at a high top table. One star off for the drinks, as neither of us was impressed with what we had ordered. Such a gem of a location that has never been fully realized until maybe now. It's an old beer barrel storage basement with exposed brick tunnels and a large room at one end. So you can hang in the main area and listen to chill DJs (pre 10p) or you can go to one of the rooms adjacent to the main room and conversation while u sip your cocktail. The bartenders are knowledgeable and they have a solid selection of liquors. The line to get drinks can move a little slow but just be patient. Pro tip - get there just before 9 for no cover charge and plenty of tables open. By 10 it hard to find a table. Dancing seemed eminent but we left just before 10. Next time bringing the Mrs as she's looking for a chill dance spot that starts earlier. read more

There was no service in this "breezeway". We went to the bar for drinks. We decided to go elsewhere for food. On our way out after drinks we checked out the place. My company just hosted our first holiday party at Root. Our company is brand new, and this party gave a great first impression to our new employees and investors. The space is amazing and all of our guests couldn't stop talking about what a cool venue it was. Caitlin and Roger helped me plan the event from beginning to end. They were quick to answer ALL of my questions, and there were a lot. The bartenders (especially Andrea) were awesome and were great communicators throughout the night to keep my budget on track. My sorority Sigma Kappa hosted our last date party of the semester here. As the social chair, I have worked with many companies in the Ann Arbor/ Detroit area and Root was by far the most accommodating and helpful. As a sorority we have a slightly tighter budget and they worked with me to make sure we got everything we wanted under our budget. The management staff and owner were present throughout the entire event looking for ways they could help. Their food is delicious and the venue fit over 300 people easily. Everyone loved the new space and food options. We will definitely return to Root next semester! read more
