A staple in downtown Ann Arbor, Frita is always a great spot to meet up with friends before going out for drinks nearby. Seating is picnic-bench style so be prepared to share/sit close to other parties. Food is great and comes out really quickly - you can mix and match what you get when you order before sitting. My only note about the spot is that there is one line to order food which can get backed up. Since it's right by the front door it also makes it a little difficult to get inside if you already have people you're meeting up with. read more

First time eating here. Went after a movie on a Sunday. You eat at shared picnic tables, ordering your food at the counter. It's then delivered to you. We tried a chicken Frita, the chorizo, Frita, and one of the beef Fritas. They all come with fries on top. We also added the tropical slaw. The coconut batido and the chocolate batido were delicious. I haven't been to many Cuban places, but I actually was very impressed by the burger. I've been to many burger places in Chicago but none that come with plantains. I would say the burger was relatively average overall. I got mine with bacon which was so thick it almost was like pork belly! Something that was different about this burger was the bun was a little bit sweet, which was a nice change up from the savory patty. Let me also preference. I'm not someone who likes fries on their burgers so I definitely gave those to my friend. The thing that took the cake for me were the plantain chips. Almost everyone in my group ordered a pack so I was like maybe this is too much overkill, I couldn't have been more wrong. I needed an entire pack of those. They were sweet. They were salty, they came with us delicious avocado garlic guac. I think they were a little expensive for what they are, but I would've happily paid six dollars. What surprise me the most was the drink. It was negative degrees outside and everyone in our group ordered a Batido. I got the coconut one and it was perfect. Perfectly creamy, perfectly sweet, icy, but not chunky. I would drive all the way from Chicago to Michigan to get this batido again. We ended up getting the cinnamon sugar plantains for dessert, and I didn't care for the texture as they were relatively heavy. I think the denseness took away from the light texture I was expecting. I cannot count the number of people that recommended Frita Batidos while I was visiting Ann Arbor for a few days! Multiple people said this was their favorite restaurant in town, so I had to give it a try! I'm not quite sure what I expected, but it's a Cuban burger restaurant and bar. You walk up and order and then can eat there for a full service meal, but I took my food to go. I ordered a chorizo burger with Muenster, avocado, and cilantro lime salsa. I thought it was really good and incredibly filling. It was served with shoe string fries on the burger so it was definitely a heavy meal. I dipped it in some siracha sauce for some extra spice but personally didn't think it was spicy enough. Overall the burger was delicious, but I wish they had a spicy chorizo or something with a little bit more of a kick. I didn't try any of the drinks but they looked delicious. I'd love to come back and eat at the restaurant and order some of their drinks. Normally I wouldn't take the time to review over and over and over again because generally a place isn't consistently great. You can't say that about Frita's. It is consistently great it's even consistently fabulous!!!! Tonight I capped it off by trying the Chorizo Frida which is the only regular Frita that I had not tried. It will be one of my favorites and I will definitely order it again! I have never had chorizo that wasn't greasy and this was not the least little bit and was spiced to perfection. Need I remind you that Frita is a real person.... who brought real traditional recipes to her very real Cuban establishment here in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. She has brought in her menu and now offers bowls which are lettuce-based and on the healthy side. You make your way to the counter and then place your order. Nice spot right in the middle of the college crowd. The vibe here is upbeat and lively, but finding a seat on weekends can be tough, the place stays packed. We tried the Chicken Frita burger, and it was excellent and full of that Cuban-inspired twist. The Coconut Batido was easily the star of the meal, creamy and refreshing -- definitely a must-try. The Chocolate Batido was good too. The only letdown was the Cilantro Fries -- they came out soggy and didn't really hit the mark. Based on a few visits. This is a comfortable, relaxed place to eat some really good food. Dare I say fun. The service is very good and food taste and quality is worth coming for. Frita Batidos is the classic Cuban burger spot that you HAVE to visit at least once if you live on campus. This is your classic late-night spot that sells fishbowls, burgers, and other great menu items. Their Batidos are all delicious and sweet. The fishbowls are huge, but if you're not into tart drinks, they might not be for you. You HAVE to get their garlic cilantro fries! Their plantain chips are good too. Don't forget about the rice bowls!!! I only recently discovered them and they're one of my favorite things to order. The pulled pork is super savory and there's a slight sweet taste that matches well with the seasoned rice. For fritas, I always get chorizo and make it loco. It's a little pricey, but the toppings are worth it. I used to get beef, but when they're really busy, sometimes the meat comes out practically raw. For that, I'm taking off one star. PLEASE Be careful when ordering beef. Their black bean burger is good too. Very rare con, but the seasonal items today were kinda flops. The Mexican city corn was just corn from a can that was mixed with seasoning. It came out hot, but it was average. The cubano was not great. The coffee was sour and the sugar at the bottom didn't melt, so it didn't help with the flavor. While other seasonal menu items have been good, today's was not worth. Must-stop anytime we're in Ann Arbor. People seem allergic to online ordering, but it saved us having to stand in a long line on Homecoming weekend. Biggest tip I can give is to absolutely NOT skimp on spending the extra $1.50/each to get the muenster cheese and the sunny-side up egg. My order is the double beef frita with the muenster cheese and the sunny-side up egg. Just a classic "burger" but in my opinion, the egg and the cheese is what separates the flavor from just an average burger. If you want to learn the hard way, order one without and order one with and see for yourself. PS: there are shoestring fries in the burger. Sides are kind of mid. Delicious and worth the wait! I got the chorizo burger and my bf got the black bean burger. The sauce on both paired well. I added avocado spread and salsa, and it complimented the spicy sauce quite nicely. Both burgers were juicy and cooked well and the fries were a lovely added bonus. Knowing this is a local establishment for the students especially, we took that as a grain of salt and walked right in on a Saturday night with our 3 small children LOL! We ordered a variety of fritas as well as some yummy drinks. The fritas were hit or miss for our kids, but only because they're kids and you know how kids can be. Muenster and egg are my go-to toppings, but the thick cut bacon is a special treat. Crisped Plantains (5/5): I loved these plantain chips. They were crispy but also kinda meaty. Some plantain dishes have too much of a banana flavor, but these tasted more like potatoes to me. The avocado spread/dip paired really nicely with the chips. Frita Batidos...why must you be in Ann Arbor and not in Los Angeles???? Loved this place so much we went again the next day. Double beef frita, loco style with jalapeños is the move. The chicken frita is good too, as is the fish, but the beef is where it's AT. Their tropical salad is great too, the guava vinaigrette hits the perfect notes of fruity, tangy, and savory. I tried it by itself and audibly went "woah". The only thing that competes for top spot IMO is the chicken verde bowl. They packed my shii with chicken, and the tropical slaw with mango on the side was gorgeous. Rice was flavorful, chicken was tender and falling apart. I could eat that probably every day. Maybe it deserves top spot. Pork bowl was good too but didn't come close to the chicken in my opinion. I just didn't love the flavor--not sure if they use soy sauce in the marinade but I didn't like the flavor as much. The meat is still tender and delicious, though. Get the batidos!!! I forced my boyfriend to get his own because I knew he would want to drink a whole one after he had a first sip. I was right. Chocolate is fantastic but my favorite was their "lighter" batido, which is mango and pineapple. Worth the long line. Ambiance is clean & cute & definitely bustling. I wish I could teleport. OK, when you walk in the first impression might be that the spot feels a bit clinical, in the sense that there's a lot of white everywhere. But soon you start appreciating the art along the walls and in different places. The staff is extremely friendly. We had a wonderful experience here. Most importantly, the food is absolutely excellent. We try a burger and they're Cuban sandwich, as part of our Cuban quest, which takes us to try out Cuban sandwiches anywhere we go.
