We started with some gorgeous drinks -- I had "Green with Envy" (very tasty) but my boyfriend's drink, the La Serre 75, was the table favorite (champagne, smoked rosemary, yum). His dad got a Kentucky Mule which was also perfect. Food was good, but a touch expensive for what you get. BF's steak frites were delicious and perfectly cooked. His dad's deux tornados were pretty raw considering he ordered them medium, and he said they didn't have a ton of flavor. I had the Berkshire Pork and it was admittedly exquisite: a big hunk of pork, gorgeous grits, amazing pomegranate and herbs. They offered us a free dessert (cheesecake) because we were celebrating. We visited for lunch on Memorial Day and were hoping to enjoy the brunch menu, only to learn that it's available on weekends only. The restaurant was a bit tricky to locate from outside since there wasn't a sign indicating it's inside the Vanguard Hotel. We were greeted by a wonderfully quiet and peaceful atmosphere that made for a relaxing meal. I ordered the French-style omelette. I personally prefer my eggs a bit softer with a touch more cheese for extra richness. Since the restaurant embraces French influences, I found myself wishing for a warm crispy French baguette or a buttery croissant served with good French butter to complete the experience. Beautiful new French-inspired restaurant near the hospital located inside the new Vanguard Hotel. The space is so gorgeous!! Very French modern with blues and whites and modern fixtures. We met some relatives who were in town and they loved the food. We didn't get any drinks but we did get some apps and then my husband I opted for their stuffed squash item. It was the only vegetarian main entree. It was good but wasn't super filling so that's my only criticism. I know it's a French menu so vegetarian options aren't common but it'd have been nice to have a slither more filling option! read more

We have been wanting to check out the new Vanguard Hotel and La Serra restaurant in Ann Arbor since it opened. Finally had the opportunity yesterday. The Hotel is beautiful as for the lobby, the appointments and decor. La Serre is accessible directly off the lobby. We only had an appetizer and a craft cocktail but were very pleased with both. Our servers were friendly and attentive. My wife and I both had an Expresso martini, and must say they were well crafted with a creamy richness. For the app: we had the Gougeres; with garlic butter, fine grated Parmesan And sprinkled with herbs. The batter was light, crispy and had good flavor, and the garlic butter was exceptionally nice. They have a pretty extensive menu of apps and entrees, so we will definitely be going back for dinner. Worth checking out if in town. (Parking can be interesting in that area. Nice spot for an elegant, upscale meal! I was impressed right away with the ambiance. It is beautiful and polished without getting stuffy or unapproachable. Cocktails were good. Boozy, and balanced. Bartender went a little above and beyond helping me pick out an aperitif for dessert with an extra sample. For food, I tried: - Hamachi Crudo. Light, delicately flavored, bit of a kick! Very nice presentation. I would get this again. - Artichoke Frites. Fried with a lemon truffle dipping sauce. Good concept, could've been crispier! The heart pieces were the best, of course. - Steak Frites. This was good! Not necessarily extraordinary, but priced reasonably (for the area) as well. - Crème Brulee. Fabulous! Not tooo sweet. Location is not the most convenient for pulling La Serre into a regular rotation. They do have valet parking as an option. I was staying in the hotel for a work event and decided to dine at La Serra along with my co-worker. The menu is small but thoughtfully crafted. The dining room is relatively small. Upon our initial seating we were set in at a table that had us way too close to those at the next table. It was a little uncomfortable to say that we were not together. We did ask to be moved and then sat a table in the middle of the dining room which was definitely better. My dining companion and I enjoyed our meals and were both pleasantly surprised about the quality and taste from a hotel restaurant. Our server was very kind and attentive. I would certainly dine here again. However, due to the size and layout of the dining room, I personally would want to visit on a day that was lower traffic. read more

Located in the Vanguard Hotel. I've eaten at this restaurant several different times and enjoyed every meal. For breakfast, I had the croissant french toast with chantilly cream and fresh fruit on top. The cream had a hint of lemon. For lunch, I had the french onion soup and pommes frites. The soup was yummy - it had a little sweetness. I always love shoestring fries, but the rosemary and herbs that they were tossed in were delish! For dinner, I had the braised beef short rib. This new spot is located inside the Vanguard. It's a nice little vibe outside the traditional A2 spot and it's nice that places like this are popping up for the more "adult" crowd. The valet was super nice. That's just an aside. They were trying to accommodate a large party and it was hard to get a reservation, but we managed and we didn't find wait time for our food and drink to be negatively impacted. Instead of taking my assigned table, I opted to sit at the bar--a decision I'm so glad I made. From start to finish, every recommendation Chris made was spot on. He started me with the Hamachi Crudo appetizer, described the truffle butter served with the Gougères in a way that made it irresistible, and curated excellent cocktail and wine pairings to match my food choices. Throughout the evening, I watched him interact with multiple guests, and without exception, he was warm, attentive, and genuinely hospitable. I am sorry to say that this place has gone downhill. Service and drinks are still good. Food is not good. Too much salt in EVERYTHING - broccolini, fries, fish... goodness are they trying to kill us? Loved the short rib and the croquettes, really tasty. Also loved the mocktail with "garden" in the name, very good. I thought the cheese puffs were just ok, my wife loved them. Unfortunately my steak was a bit overcooked, but the potatoes that came with it were delicious. I thought the chocolate cake was delicious, though my wife just thought it was ok. I had the best experience sitting at the bar! Chris & Logan immediately took care of me and were attentive the entire night. Chris asked what brought me in, and when I told him I was celebrating my birthday he immediately poured me a glass of his favorite sparkling wine. This was such a thoughtful gesture and it made me feel very appreciated! The steak frites were delicious, some of the best steak I've had in Ann Arbor. La Serre is the restaurant inside the Vanguard hotel. Very popular with locals and definitely not just got the hotel stayers. The food was expertly prepared and delicious. We started with the asparagus and Brussels sprouts. The asparagus wasn't too salty like some places. The sauce it came in was awesome. The Brussels sprouts came with little chunks of bacon and were mouth watering. For dinner, myself and my companions ordered: - Caesar salad and French onion soup - Steak Frites (x2) - Salmon Everyone liked what they ordered. The French onion soup was great - crisp and cheesy topping. The only dish I wouldn't recommend was the Caesar salad which was very fresh but the dressing was plain and didn't taste like a Caesar. The service was excellent. Key was the best server we've had anywhere. She even exchanged all plates and silverware between appetizers and dinner. The staff was accommodating too because we arrived 10 minutes believe closing at 10pm and they didn't bat an eyelash. read more

Excited for a new restaurant, and deeply disappointed. Beautiful interior design with no thought for universally inclusiveness. Poor furniture spacing: my dad tripped, and luckily didn't fall or get hurt. Someone will, with how crowded and cluttered the furniture and rugs are in the lobby, through which you must traverse to even get to the front of the house. The tables and chairs are so close together that other guests and almost all the workers bumped into my chair, all night. Most importantly: the food. It was mediocre at best, with the exception of the asparagus & leek soup, and the double steak. The table bread was 4 tiny slices of over toasted baguette. The oysters Rockefeller = 4 of the tiniest oysters I've seen. The brazino was dry, overcooked, and tasteless. And service: the hostess took off and was at the back of the restaurant by our too-small cafe table, and waited for us to catch up. She did not wait to keep pace with my octogenarian parent with a cane. Our server was out of sight so much that our meal took 1.5 hours. This is a Monday night. Just, no. La Serre was beautiful. The dining room was elegant and felt very welcoming. The restaurant was huge, and had many tables. I enjoyed our table, and the special elevator for in people in wheelchairs like me. The menu was extensive. I ordered a steak with two sides. One side had blue cheese, and the other had shiitake mushrooms on it. The flavor of the meat was very earthy and delicious. The steak had a chewy texture that I really appreciated. The person I was with had a burrata salad with herbed tomatoes that she did not enjoy that much. Maybe it was too Italian for the restaurant, and she should have had something French. The staff was adequate. Our waitress played Spelling Bee, and I talked to her about it a little bit. She did not do a great job at describing the plates. I did enjoy a gentleman named Dominic, who poured our water for the evening. The staff was very friendly, and I enjoyed talking to them. The bill came to about $52. The portion sizes were huge. I split the steak I had over two meals. It was expensive but worth it. I really enjoyed my meal, and I hope to go back with my husband one day. I would give the meal 4 out of 5 stars, I would like to try dessert next time when I go back. read more

This was the best meal we have had in Ann Arbor for some time! The space is beautiful and the service was attentive and warm. Everything we ordered was executed perfectly--classic but never generic. Standouts were the gougères (Gruyère cheese puffs), artichoke hearts frite, goat cheese tart (my favorite!), and Creme brûlée. The steak and mussels frites were both delicious. The gnocchi, croquettes, and harvest soup were great but my steak was not made to order as I did ask for medium well, but it was medium rare. My husband asked for no onions but received onions anyway, and asked for an over medium egg on his burger, but it was over easy. I think what really bummed me out was the fact that we traveled here for our 25th wedding anniversary, and not one person said happy anniversary. We have lived all over the United States as we are both veterans, and love to visit special restaurants for birthdays and anniversaries... but especially anniversaries as we know what a privilege it is to get to grow old together and to celebrate together (we have spent many anniversaries apart thanks to deployments). We drove hours to this establishment and didn't hear one person say happy anniversary, what made you choose our establishment? It may seem like a little thing but it's a huge milestone and we've missed out on so many celebrations in the past. Fare was standard upmarket variety: a$40.00 smash burger, a steak and frite dish that shaved the steak into small, bite sized portions--pretty, yes--but one couldn't help feel As though this was also a clever way to make a profit on less meat and more "presentation." The fried artichoke starter was the star of the show, as was the butter. Yes, I said butter. Butter, herbed, served with just a hint of Maldon salt was a lovely addition to a serviceable piece of bread. While dinner was fine, not spectacular, the valet parking situation was abysmal. Nobody seemed to know anything about it save that it would cost a hefty $15.00 to park. We had to enlist a hotel employee to help us find a way to park, and another to help us find anyone willing to go and get our car. The scene was comical. Since there is absolutely no street parking around The Vanguard, this restaurant will have to get its valet game in order if it is to have a chance of surviving. But, with so many interesting and exceptionally run restaurants in A2, I fear that La Serre is not long for this world. read more

Ambiance was nice although tables were narrow and quite close together. There was bread and butter to start which would have been better if the bread were warm. For the appetizers we had the beef tartare which was very good and the artichoke. I had the short rib as the main course which was a generously large portion and very tender. Went here for our anniversary and asked for a quiet table away from traffic. They put us at a table by the window which was perfect. Ambiance is great, very Parisian. The entire staff was nice and very attentive. The food was very good and the portions were surprisingly big. Had the fried artichoke appetizer which was wonderful. Then the beet salad which was also very good. Mrs had squash gnocchi which was an appetizer on their specials menu. I had the beef tornados which was Two 6 ounce filets, one with Malbec wine sauce and the other with a cream based sauce so was supposed to be black and white. Both were very good as was the sides of spinach and potatoes. We will definitely return. They do have valet parking which is great but it's odd how you pull in to drop the car.
