Easily my favorite speakeasy in Ann Arbor. Although the drinks are small, the creativity and quality and taste is amazing. true "mixologists" here. I noticed a stage so i think they have live music sometimes. The wait used to be really long or they were just fully booked. Walked in on a Saturday night without a reservation. Placed on the wait list for a table and got set up at the standing section of the bar. Fast and friendly service provided us a bottle of water and information regarding the menu. Ordered one cocktail each, shortly after receiving we were taken to a table. I came here on the wrong night for a first date, evidently. I think our experience was the exact opposite of Tiffany's...it was a super young crowd on Friday. I liked the speakeasy vibe, but it was WAY LOUD in here on a Friday night. I've heard that on other nights it's way more chill, fyi. I'd like to try this place on a weeknight where I can explore the menu and the drinks without being overwhelmed with sound and bodies. We didn't make a reservation (highly recommended on a weekend) but we were able to squeeze onto the rail bar adjacent. It was AOK but made ordering food a challenge with so many bodies surrounding us. The drinks we had were fine, but The Sugar House will always be my gold-standard for prohibition-era/speakeasy cocktails. It was a really busy Friday so it's hard to speak to the quality of drinks coming out of the bar during normal service. I need to come back to give this spot a fair shake. read more

This place has been on our list for a while, and so glad we finally made it in. It had the quiet ambiance of a classy speakeasy, and Julia was friendly and attentive. The cocktails were so unique, it was difficult to choose - I went with The Osborn: Mammoth Old Dam Gin, fresh pineapple, fresh jalapeño, fresh lime, and ginger beer - one of the tastiest drinks I have ever had! The French Onion Poutine was so delicious, would definitely order that again. We really enjoyed the Chefs Board charcuterie, I think it might have been even better with some crusty bread in addition to the crostini (it was quite crunchy, some chewy crusty pieces would be a nice contrast). Through the red door... Fun speakeasy with a large drink menu. Came on a Friday night and there was a wait for tables but ended up getting seats at the bar. All of us got different cocktails - I got the crimson and clover which was sweet, tangy, and refreshing. They have a huge menu so you're sure to find something! They also had a nice little snack menu but definitely not full dinner. Staff was friendly and there were at least 3 bartenders so drinks didn't take long. Drinks were maybe $12-16, so normal cocktail prices, and they were all pretty elaborate. Overall, a moody vibe and great drinks, would be a great date spot! read more

Super cute venue and space. Make sure to make reservations before you head in if possible~ we were not able to get seats right away but they have a standing full service bar area! As tables became available they would give us the option to sit at a table. Drinks are 14-20$ which is pretty standard and food options are pricier. The house fries have multiple flavors to choose from and we were not disappointed by the garlic Romano flavor of the week. We had a hard time finding this place but we finally did. There is a nice selection of Cocktails as you would expect. I prefer drinks that aren't over so much ice. Unfortunately most are from what my server was saying. I ordered a few to try. They were decent but nothing that blew me away. I can't have aquafaba and was pleased they could sub Egg white. They are accommodating and service was great. There's a weird musty smell everywhere that my husband and I noticed that is pretty overwhelming. The atmosphere was nice. It was a pretty slow night. I'm not sure how it is when it's busier. We were able to talk, it wasn't too loud. I tried the Space Bird. It was delicious, but it was served over a ton of ice so it became watered down. I would not order it again. The Rosie... Was decent. Just like a champagne cocktail but not great. Third.. Persephone's Garden, it was my favorite. It had a nice flavor. We came here for martinis and we are not disappointed. We ordered dirty martinis and they were excellent. They had just the right amount of olive juice. We also ordered the cheese board and the cauliflower appetizer. The cheese board was huge with generous portions of cheese and fruit. The menu is surprisingly amazing though high prices for the portion. *if you are not a large party and are not ordering food It gets very crowded and I would not recommend having a party here larger than 4 people. Servers are too busy or do not WANT to keep up with a larger party, which we were in the corner. Guests wanted more drinks, order food, needed water, napkins, salt and pepper, etc. It was a serious hassle trying to get service/something every time we needed it. Even though the food menu is great, I wouldn't recommend a group try to eat here. Maybe two or even four people for dinner and order a bottle of wine. The cocktails are top notch but take awhile and the server doesn't like to keep coming around. They want to deliver the drinks and that's it. (when she's remember) At least that was the impression we got in our party. It was a birthday and trying to keep lively for the birthday girl, and not spend the whole time trying to get what we needed was very frustrating. They lost a lot of money on drinks we wanted to order and couldn't or opted to skip because of the poor service. This is a fun place for cocktails. Cool, dark vibe, though a bit on the loud side. Our group shared several cocktails and they were all good. My favorite was the Los Lobos, but you really can't go wrong with most of the menu. The small bites are pretty good. The tables are seated pretty close to each other so you could definitely hear another party's conversation. The scent is what threw me off at first. I've been to The Last Word several times over the past couple of years. This time, came for a Monday late afternoon meetup with friends and had a great experience. Since it was only 5:30p, there were plenty of open tables and was seated quickly. Service was good - no complaints. I'm a big fan of their 50% off charcuterie boards on Mondays now. We ordered both their charcuterie board and cheese board. We also ordered two orders of their house fries and their mushroom ravioli. All the food came out fairly quickly and was very good. Just as a note, some of their food items can be pricier for the portion size, their bao buns among others. For drinks, we got the Tiki on the French Riviera, You're my boy blue, and Kentucky Sunshine which were all excellent. As a long time patron of The Last Word, I'm excited that they're doing specials on weekday nights (50% boards on Mon and they also do discounts for whiskey Wednesday I believe) and will definitely be coming back soon. read more

I used to really like this spot but it seems to be extra crowded on the weekends now. I definitely recommend making a reservation. I do like that you can text if you're running late and they'll respond. That's a nice feature that I don't remember them having. We were seated promptly but the tables are quite close together where you don't really feel like you have a lot of space or privacy between the next table. You almost feel like you're in their conversation. It also took some time before a waitress came to take our order. I actually had to get up and ask the hostess if she could send over our waitress. Then, when I tried to order, they were out of two of the main things that I wanted, which was disappointing. The food that we did end up ordering was as good. Definitely make a reservation if you're interested in checking out The Last Word. Nate and I stopped by at 10:30 pm on a Saturday over the summer and there was about an hour wait. There are other spots nearby that you can check out while you wait. Once we were seated, our server was great and helped us navigate the menu which is arranged into "chapters." From chapter 3 we tried the Osborn; gin, pineapple, jalapeno, lime, and ginger beer, and from chapter 5 we got the Space bird; gin, green cardamom aperol, lemon, passion fruit, and aquafaba. They were both refreshing and delicious! I loved both but I think the Space bird was my favorite. It was definitely tropical feeling and I'm a sucker for passion fruit. The foaminess from the aquafaba rather than egg white was unique - I hadn't seen that in a drink before. At about $12 per cocktail, it's not as pricey as I was expecting. The menu reminds me of Two James' which is one of my favorite cocktail bars. The seating was pretty close to other parties which wasn't super comfortable, and the vibe is dark and moody. We wanted to love this spot, our cocktails were unique and fun, but we were really disappointed with our experience with allergens. A member of our party has celiac, which the server assured us would be no problem as they had separate fryers and utensils for all gluten-free menu options. We would have been happy to just do cocktails, but we were assured that the server herself was not able to have gluten, and plenty of the menu was safe. We asked if the lamb skewer plate would be gluten-free, and the server checked with the kitchen and reported back that we were good to go. As it turns out, it's not gluten-free! A few bites in, we became suspicious that it wasn't actually the case, and asked again if it was gluten-free - the server once again went back to the kitchen and came back to reveal that there is indeed wheat in the dish as part of a soy vinaigrette. They had so much confidence originally, and even mentioned the dish was on their internal gluten-free menu they reference. I hope they learn from our friend being gluten-ed and can improve their menu knowledge for future guests. read more

The Last Word was recommended to me by a coworker who lives in A2 & we're big fans now! This speakeasy has fantastic cocktails and a bit of an older crowd, which is more our speed. Just walk past LIVE and it's a relatively easy to find door. There's a VERY small LW sign to the left of the door but it's quite subtle -- so just look for the black door with the circular bubble window! We've been a couple times now - the first time we had food: *Sausage Board (features from corridor sausage company: pork apple sage, detroit brat, bacon & swiss, vietnamese chicken) - quite tasty! The vietnamese chicken one particularly stood out to me as the flavor was crazy accurate! *Piri Piri Chicken (marinated grilled breast over coconut lime risotto): They were able to accommodate a double protein ask! The grilled chicken borderlined dry BUT the sauce & risotto were awesome. & most recently we've had the following cocktails -- I'm all about their Chapter 4 (stronger-flavored, bitter, herbal) cocktails! They have a lot of whiskeys on deck! All were really tasty: *Old West Side (Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon, Smoked Domaine de Canton, Carpano Antica, Regan's Orange Bitters) *Islay Sour (Lazzaroni Amaretto, Allspice Dram, Laphroaig 10yr, Fresh Lemon, Egg White, Honey) - If you like smoky flavors like mezcal like I do, then youll be a fan! *The Allfather's Eye (Norden Aquavit, Meletti, Hyperion Cold Brew Coffee, Cherry Vanilla Bark Bitters) - This was super interesting.
