I decided to try this place for my birthday lunch and I am so glad I did. The waitress was extremely kind and patient as I looked at every single item and asked questions. This is gonna be my new go-to place! We went for brunch and got the waffle and chick'n n waffles. Both were yummy, but I'm definitely going to try the vegan migas plate next time! My sister is vegan and she was very much delighted of this place. We ordered the vegan queso con carne and the vegan bbq. Both of these items were vegan and they were both delicious! I am not vegan but the queso tasted almost like real cheese and the meat from the vegan bbq tasted almost like real meat. The bbq sauce for the vegan bbq was just scrumptious! I wish to mimic that sauce on real meat one of these days. I also tried their spinach pineapple juice and it was delicious. I definitely recommend the juice as well! I was so excited when I found Mr. Natural while research vegan-friendly restaurants in Austin - vegetarian and vegan homemade Tex-Mex cuisine! Since I was there in the early afternoon on a Friday, there was also the option to get a lunch plate from their daily specials offerings, or ordering items off the menu. Since I will almost always jump on the opportunity to get vegan nachos if one presents itself, I ordered the Macho Nachos with vegan cheese instead of regular cheese. BUT I wish I had known how ridiculously large the order was before I had ordered, because I might have ordered something else. As much as I love nachos, in hindsight, I wouldn't have ordered so much food and spent so much money for it when it was just me. (If I had been there with someone else, we would have been sharing the nachos and I would have been happy and it would have been worth it.) As it was, I got a plate that was probably bigger than my head and it was loaded with a ton of chips and topped with vegan queso, refried beans, Soy-rizo, lettuce, jalapeños, pico de gallo, & guacamole. I would even say the toppings (aside from the jalapeños) were rather bland - it definitely needed something more to round out the flavors. I ended up only eating maybe 1/4 or 1/3 at the most of the chips and scraping off as much of the toppings as I could to eat it. (Despite being bland, I wanted to be able to get as much protein and good fat from the meal as possible.) If I'm in the Austin area again in the future, I would want to come back and try something else from their menu - as there were lots of vegan-friendly items I could have gotten, not to menu their huge display case of desserts, many of which were vegan AND gluten-free. read more

As plant-based establishments start to make their way into the mainstream, Mr. Natural is an Austin classic that has been around since the 80's - providing homestyle Mexican dishes with a vegetarian & vegan twist. There are many options to choose from and the two plates that peaked my interest the most were the: - Holy Mole Vegan Enchiladas: they take corn tortillas, stuff them with seitan (which is the main protein in wheat and gives off a neutral flavor, so the idea is that it's to resemble plain chicken), and tops them off with vegan mole. I appreciate what they are trying to do here, but I felt there was more to be desired in the richness of the mole. I've also had seitan many times, but I was also hoping those would have been marinated with a bit more flavor too. ($14.25) - Fajita Special (on Monday's): they take seitan and mushrooms and cook them with onions and peppers to give them that caramelized flavor you find when you get regular chicken fajitas, so I liked the seitan here a lot more. The portion size was alright, I do wish you got just a bit more "meat". ($11.75) - Tres Leches: a vegan take on a classic Mexican dessert. My only gripe here was that the texture was a bit more drier and more dense, like a regular cake. I understand it's vegan and again, I respect what they're doing here, but I'm used to tres leches being a lot more moist in texture. Aside from that, the flavor was there and I did like it. ($5) All in all, I rate them a 3/5 because although I desired more with some of the flavors and such, they did have some good qualities too. If anything, I would have liked to have seen more integration of newer vegan ingredients like Beyond Chicken or Impossible Beef which I felt could have given them a higher score. We wanted to try more but 4 slices of cake was already a lot of food so held off on ordering the pastries until next time. The best of all the cakes was the Black Forest- I did not have high hopes for this one because I've never cared for Black Forest at other places- the cherry flavor is usually too artificially sweet and cloying, but this one was divine! I wouldn't have thought it was not meat. The texture tastes a little more on the chewy side though. That's was the best thing that I got to try there.
