De Nada is known to Austinites as one of the best taco spots and best bars in Austin, known for its blue corn tacos and frozen drinks. I had never tried it. It was either too busy or just out of the way for me. At my girlfriend's request, she wanted De Nada. We got De Nada. With no reservations and no plans on a mid-Saturday, we were understandably banished to the outdoor tables. It was a hot day, but with the fan blowing and the cold drinks flowing, I thought we'd be alright. We scanned their QR code menu and got our drinks ordered. Me with a Modelo Negra, and my girlfriend with their Beso De Sandia frozen, with Mezcal, Chamoy, watermelon, and lime. We also ordered chips with Queso Blanco and Salsa Verde with our drinks. The queso was brought to us within the minute we ordered. No joke. It was efficient. Capital F fast. With our drinks eventually brought out, we were honestly chilling. My girlfriend previously had a vegan enchilada she really liked that they didn't have this time, so she went for a Camote taco. I went for their Pollo and their Barbacoa. While we waited, we were putting in active work on that queso, which we knew we would feel later. The tacos came out very quickly too. On my Pollo was confit chicken, poblano peppers, cheese, cilantro, and onions. I was hungry at this point of the day, so it wasn't long before I destroyed it. The Barbacoa had beef, habanero salsa, cilantro, and pickled onions. It was also an excellent pick. On both, the blue corn tortillas were thick, added a touch of sweetness, and just made the experience a little more fun. In seeing the pink menus, the overall aesthetic of De Nada, hearing the talk of the town, and just knowing the run around here, I didn't expect De Nada to have cheap tacos. $5.50 for the chicken taco is a little hard to justify, and $7.75 for barbacoa is intense, but everything hit the spot, and we rolled out spending about $50 plus tip between the two of us, so it wasn't anything too out of the ordinary for a lunch. I just do think going in with the expectation that it's those Austin prices, you'll be less shocked down the stretch, and if you're less shocked, you can actually enjoy the great food they throw down here. I really wanted to like De Nada, but the overall experience just wasn't for me. The service model felt much more self-service than I expected. We sat for a while without menus before I finally got up and asked for them. There are QR codes on the tables, but when I go out to eat, I prefer being able to put my phone away and have an actual menu. I also had to get up to find salt rather than having basic condiments available at the table. A few other details made the experience feel less polished than I expected. Staff members were eating in full view at the service station, and our server's very casual cropped top exposed her midriff. I realize that may not bother everyone, but personally I prefer a slightly more professional presentation when dining out. The chips and salsa were also disappointing. The salsa came in three very small ramekins, with no explanation of what each one was or whether any were spicy. The containers were so small that dipping a full-size chip was awkward. None of the salsas had much flavor, and when I wanted more of the red salsa, I had to specifically request it. I was also surprised that the chips weren't house-made. For my meal, I ordered the crispy beef tacos. Unfortunately, they were quite greasy, and the seasoning tasted more like packaged taco seasoning than the fresh, distinctive flavor I was hoping for. There are clearly people who enjoy De Nada's casual, modern style, but for me, dining out is partly about being taken care of. Parking: is limited in the restaurant but they have a lot across the street where there are plenty of spaces. Service: fantastic! The food and service here are great!! It can get really busy so it is hard to get seating. Especially hard when you have large parties. The only option was to sit outside and it was pretty uncomfortable. There was a bunch of cars driving really close to us and the fans did not reach our table. Mango marg: This marg was very strong but very refreshing because it was hot outside. I got the frozen one but all I could taste was alcohol. Dining at the OG location is very different from their new South Austin location. Difficult parking, but usually you can find a spot on the street along the back. Wowsers! This place is ON POINT!!! We came here with friends who are local and they know their stuff! The service was very good and the food was even better. Special call outs for me on the queso, which is one of the best I've ever eaten, and the Spicy Pineapple Margarita. The restaurant was lively (we ate inside) but not too loud, as they have several separate eating areas and that helps keep the noise down a bit, which is great! You can still enjoy chatting with friends but it's not shouting level loud. All of the items I had were gluten free, and that is amazing. The blue corn tortilla was phenomenal. Everyone kept talking about this place- a friend mentioned it, we went to watch an interview with the Poppi crater and she said this was her favorite place in Austin, everyone in the audience cheered. We had to come here. There is not a lot of parking, so we had to park on the street behind the restaurant, but there was blocked window glass everywhere. I counted 14 different windows on the street. So now I'm paranoid sitting at the restaurant thinking someone is going to break into my car while I'm eating. We were road tripping and all of our luggage was in the car. TL;DR: Pricy overall but good food and vibes. I might come back if I am in the area. Food: I ordered 3 tacos: Carnitas, Verduras, and Camarones Pibil. I also had the cucumber skinny margarita. I really enjoyed the tacos as they were a decent size for the price of around ~$5-6 each. I would especially order the camarones and verduras tacos again. The shrimp in the camarones taco is very flavorful and soft. I was pleasantly surprised with the mushroom pico in the verduras -- the mushroom flavor is quite noticeable and works well with the zucchini. The margarita was $14, and I do not think I would order it again for the size. The cup is not very large, and it was just alright. I would rather order two more tacos! Service: It's quick and to the point. You look at the menu from a QR code, and the waiter comes around pretty often. It is a must visit every time I am in town; what is there not to love about margs and tacos :) De Nada Cantina has great ambience, food, drinks, and the staff is always a pleasure! They have a full tequila bar too! Plenty of choices for the tequila conessuior (like me ;). Their agua frescas are delicious and refreshing, and can be added to any tequila of choice. I love their souvenirs as well (t-shirts and pink cups). The margaritas (frozen or on the rocks) are delicious and refreshing and pack a punch! Needed a quick bite and headed over to De Nada on South First in the Bouldin Creek area of South Austin. The stretch has that classic South Austin mix of neighborhood restaurants, a few shops, and the usual mix of locals and visitors drifting between South First and the nearby South Congress energy. It feels a little more residential and laid-back than downtown, but still busy enough that finding a spot is its own adventure. Parking is terrible. Almost all of it is street parking, and I spent the whole meal half-convinced someone was going to break into my car. Not ideal. Inside, the green light coming down from the roof was constantly distracting. It washed over everything and made the food look dark and burnt no matter what was actually on the plate. We started with chips and queso, which was the bright spot--solid and satisfying. Then the birria arrived, and it was probably the worst I've ever had. Way too smoky, like someone had left the meat next to a campfire overnight and forgotten about it. The Mexico City-inspired quesadilla is basically a fried empanada. It was okay, but the dough was thick and overly fried, more heavy than crisp. We also had a couple of margaritas. They definitely packed a punch, but they tasted like they'd been mixed with some low-rent mezcal that didn't belong in the glass. I don't see what the hype is about. Won't be returning.
