Needed a quick bite and headed over to De Nada on South First in the Bouldin Creek area of South Austin. The stretch has that classic South Austin mix of neighborhood restaurants, a few shops, and the usual mix of locals and visitors drifting between South First and the nearby South Congress energy. It feels a little more residential and laid-back than downtown, but still busy enough that finding a spot is its own adventure. Parking is terrible. Almost all of it is street parking, and I spent the whole meal half-convinced someone was going to break into my car. Not ideal. Inside, the green light coming down from the roof was constantly distracting. It washed over everything and made the food look dark and burnt no matter what was actually on the plate. We started with chips and queso, which was the bright spot--solid and satisfying. Then the birria arrived, and it was probably the worst I've ever had. Way too smoky, like someone had left the meat next to a campfire overnight and forgotten about it. The Mexico City-inspired quesadilla is basically a fried empanada. It was okay, but the dough was thick and overly fried, more heavy than crisp. We also had a couple of margaritas. They definitely packed a punch, but they tasted like they'd been mixed with some low-rent mezcal that didn't belong in the glass. I don't see what the hype is about. Won't be returning. The food and service here are great!! It can get really busy so it is hard to get seating. Especially hard when you have large parties. The only option was to sit outside and it was pretty uncomfortable. There was a bunch of cars driving really close to us and the fans did not reach our table. Mango marg: This marg was very strong but very refreshing because it was hot outside. I got the frozen one but all I could taste was alcohol. There was like zero hint of mango flavor at all except the color. It honestly tasted like a frozen regular marg. Queso: The queso is great it isn't spicy and it has a very classic flavor. Come for the margs and stay for delicious food! The carnitas tacos and the shrimp tacos are very tasty and definitely the go to. De Nada can get very busy and there is very limited but the staff still does a great job of taking care of you. Great place on South Congress that is a different feel than the OG on the East side, but certainly worth a visit. read more

I can definitely see why De Nada Cantina is so popular, it was absolutely packed with people both inside and outside, and after eating here, I completely understand the hype! We started with the chips and queso, and it was some of the creamiest, most delicious queso I've ever had. It was the perfect way to kick off the meal. We also ordered the Spicy Pineapple frozen drink, which was refreshing with just the right amount of spice. As a fun bonus, it was served in an adorable pineapple shaped glass that made the experience even more memorable. For our meal, we ordered three quesadillas and a taco. Came by on a Friday afternoon around 5 PM, and they were super packed. I biked there so parking wasn't a problem, but cars were parked on the gravel sides out on Cesar Chavez. Both tasted like alcohol haha. Frozen drinks were good in the summer though Crispy Beef Taco (4/10, $6) - literally Taco Bell tacos. Comes with with 2 - not sure if I read the menu wrong, but I thought that the beef would be Crispy. Turns out that it's just the taco shell that's Crispy filled with beef. The filling itself was quite tender and juicy, but would not get this again. - others at the table got the regular soft tacos (verduras), and they said those are really good. Wowsers! This place is ON POINT!!! We came here with friends who are local and they know their stuff! The service was very good and the food was even better. Special call outs for me on the queso, which is one of the best I've ever eaten, and the Spicy Pineapple Margarita. The restaurant was lively (we ate inside) but not too loud, as they have several separate eating areas and that helps keep the noise down a bit, which is great! You can still enjoy chatting with friends but it's not shouting level loud. All of the items I had were gluten free, and that is amazing. The blue corn tortilla was phenomenal. This place was popping! Everybody was here!! What a fun spot to be! So we stopped by on our way to dinner- hoping we could stay- but there was a 1 hour wait so make a reservation!!! We had never been here before, so decided to try it on a Saturday around noon. We were happily surprised that they were not overly crowded and they have plenty of seating inside and out. The inside really gave me the feeling of Mexico. We got a variety of different tacos and I really enjoyed mine, although I will say I did not care for the blue corn tortillas. TL;DR: Pricy overall but good food and vibes. I might come back if I am in the area. Food: I ordered 3 tacos: Carnitas, Verduras, and Camarones Pibil. I also had the cucumber skinny margarita. I really enjoyed the tacos as they were a decent size for the price of around ~$5-6 each. I would especially order the camarones and verduras tacos again. The shrimp in the camarones taco is very flavorful and soft. I was pleasantly surprised with the mushroom pico in the verduras -- the mushroom flavor is quite noticeable and works well with the zucchini. The margarita was $14, and I do not think I would order it again for the size. The cup is not very large, and it was just alright. I would rather order two more tacos! Service: It's quick and to the point. You look at the menu from a QR code, and the waiter comes around pretty often. It is a must visit every time I am in town; what is there not to love about margs and tacos :) De Nada Cantina has great ambience, food, drinks, and the staff is always a pleasure! They have a full tequila bar too! Plenty of choices for the tequila conessuior (like me ;). Their agua frescas are delicious and refreshing, and can be added to any tequila of choice. I love their souvenirs as well (t-shirts and pink cups). The margaritas (frozen or on the rocks) are delicious and refreshing and pack a punch! I usually order the chips with salsa, guac and queso, and it always hits! I prefer the hard tacos, but also love the quesadillas! The birria taco is also yummy! Be aware that this restaurant automatically adds a 20% gratuity for parties of 8 or more. That's perfectly fine but on the payment screen there was also an option to leave an additional tip. If you're not paying close attention, it's easy to tip twice. In my case, a 20% gratuity had already been included, and an extra tip was added on top of it. I have no issue tipping for great service, but I do think restaurants should make it much clearer when gratuity has already been included so customers can make an informed decision. There were a few pots that requested that patrons not pour margaritas in them. Poor plants. My friend had eaten before and I hadn't. Well guess what, we kept checking and every 20mins - same story - sold out!
