Had a reservation for a group of 5 on a Tuesday around 6:30pm and they weren't busy at all. Got sat right away and the dining area was pretty empty however the bar was packed! Not sure if they have any specials at the bar, but will need to check that out. The table ordered several items including the guacamole, ceviche, I didn't try either of those. I ordered Porcelet with "Encacahuatado" which was great, just a lot of pork. Also tried the Mexta Esquites and it was delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. The restrooms are on the 2nd floor, and one of the doors didn't lock. Uni-sex stalls, with the communal sinks outside the stalls. I do like that they were fully individual stalls. Just a quick review for Mexta. I visited here for a happy hour event on their library side. It was my first time here and I heard great things. I was really excited to try their mezcal margarita. It took a very long time to get a drink. The bartenders looked right at me and ignored me. I finally got someone's attention and he took my order on a handheld machine. I waited and waited and no one ever started making my drink. I got another bartender's attention and told him I ordered with the other guy. There was just a lot of confusion, especially for this being such a nice restaurant. I had 2 mezcal margs and they were GREAT. The service was awful though. The library space was a little tricky too because people kept coming out of the elevators and needing to squeeze through our group. I'm not sure if there are offices or apartments up there, but several people walked through the crowd carrying bicycles out the door. It was just a little inconvenient if they are advertising this as an event space. It is right next to the entrance to the Capital One Cafe. I would like to go back for dinner, but I won't go sit at the bar for happy hour like I usually would based on this odd experience with the bartenders. read more

Fancy downtown restaurant that prioritizes presentation on their food and interior. But very expensive for just average mexican food. The cocktails were well made. But no cocktail on this earth should be over $20 unless I'm getting a barrel of it. We came here for a friends birthday. And no we did not stay in the fancy birthday room with the balcony where you can look at the people beneath you dine like normal humans. But instead we had a nice square table for a smaller party. Our table kept getting random food that we didn't order. The staff were fast and on top of everything despite that. The food had a lot of fission aspects to it like mole and steak. Some of the mains came out over salted. Flan dessert was pretty good. Other than that, nothing else in the menu stuck out. We went here against our will (it was somebody's birthday). The place was very slow on Saturday night and only picked up a little closer to 8 pm. The interiors and atmosphere I would describe as a beige mom who discovered Mexican culture but she still wants to keep it sterile and neutral for her Instagram. The cocktails were good and presented nicely, but very much overpriced based on the listed ingredients. Although the presentation of dishes was pretty to look at, you still end up overpaying for otherwise a basic, in Austin standards, upper mid-tier dining experience based on menu selection. There is plenty of high end Mexican places with more interesting menu options. The service was okay: it was fast and cordial, however there was quite a bit of a mix up with plates that no one ordered being brought to the table, and we didn't get any "menu tour" or spiel or suggestions. Maybe people who arrived early did, but not us two who joined just a few minutes later. The flan and chocolate dessert were pretty good though. High ceilings give an airy feel but the interior is wrapped in stone and motifs that give you a sense that you are dining in Mexico. The service is very friendly and hospitable - they say they want to treat you as family. They do have a second floor dining area that can accommodate a large group (we saw a bachelorette party stumble down). The menu is full of dishes that I wanted to try but we were limited in stomach capacity. Note they they do have a daily special menu as well. For us we tried: Molotes - Off the special menu and you get a trio (chicken, pork and beef). These are two bites each and you can share (or might not want to). To me these resembled mini fried empanadas and were delicious. Came with pickled onions and a couple of sauces. Baja style shrimp tacos - this is a two taco dish which you could get it grilled vs fried. Chili oil gives a great little kick as a contrast to the fresh veggies. Pacific Red Snapper Ceviche - serranos give a punch and this dish has heavy acidity. Crisp corn tostadas for dipping. This bowl is sizeable and I would recommend sharing with a few other people so you don't get full. Wish they could do a half order for two people. Lobster Tortilla Bisque - this one is not a light dish. A nest of thin tortilla strips serves as a base with chunks of lobster adorning it. The flavor is lovely but the strips are quite filling. Smoked Filet Mignon with Black Mole - this plate comes out and the lid lifts to waft a smokey scent to you. Mole is then poured over perfectly grilled steak resting on a celery root purée and a tent of veggies. The smoke imparts a subtle flavor that is a nice accompaniment to the boldness of the mole. Zarandeado Style Catch of the Day - for us this was red snapper. Either a half or a whole fish. A half is still a significant portion (be wary of some bones though). Grilled nicely and accompanied with a black bean puree, roasted plantain puree (slices of plaintains and a semisweet puree), green salad (with pickled veggies) sliced avocado and a macha sauce. Great spot downtown for a celebration dinner. Came with a group for a birthday celebration on a Friday evening. Resys were easy to make. No valet so find street or the ramp across. They have a beautiful bar in the middle. Ordered 2 cocktails with ginger beer and whatever they have is not a great ginger beer. Came out super flat. Our server was wonderful to take them back no questions but did see the bartender throwing a fit that we asked if their ginger beer was stale. Pro-tip: Happy Hour every day 5-7 PM. Wow! The amount of times I walked by Mexta and didn't even realize it was there? Too many times. Happy I finally had an opportunity to give it a try. You know how you go somewhere in Austin and a basic drink is $20? Ridiculous, right? The cocktails at Mexta are just wow. Specifically the Chica de Humo. A unique and well balanced smoky flavour coming from the bacon fat infused tequila and chile morita. So. Good. Our server was ON IT. In fact, our group of six went with EVERY recommendation she made and we enjoyed every bit of every dish. I came in a little skeptical since high-end Mexican food can often feel overpriced for what you get, but my perspective quickly changed after the first bite. First off, the restaurant is stunning from a design perspective as it was warm, modern & inviting. But let's talk about the food. I visited during happy hour, which was a great value and I ordered the French fries and shrimp tacos. The fries were crispy and topped with a flavorful aioli while the tacos were fresh, filling and paired perfectly with my margarita. For my entrée I chose the bone marrow, which came with mini tortillas to balance the richness of the dish. It set the stage for my favorite part of the meal which was the Chocomaiz dessert. The brownie, paired with toffee and popcorn had amazing texture and flavor that really stood out. Service however was a little spotty not terrible, but not quite at the level I'd expect for the price point and parking is a bit of a challenge since it's downtown. Met up with few friends at MEXTA for brunch. I wouldn't say they are the IT place for brunch. The food was alright, service was okay. I won't say they Re not good because i would want to try them for dinner and then. The chilaquiles were okay but on saltier side. The Huevos von was too watery and made the tortilla in the bottom too soggy. The tres leche fresh toast was good in flavor but they had for sure burned the bottom of it while trying to caramelize the sugar. We ordered two and both were like that. Overall the ambiance is cute and not but wouldn't go back for brunch maybe to try dinner menu items. There are some cool element like the complimentary bread basket with variety of items, the shrimp juice shot, the daily flavor Mimosa. Heard good things about Mexta so I came in with a large group. We made a reservation in advance and the service was excellent. The restaurant is very nice with a casual/contemporary vibe. Our waiter explained the menu as it's not your typical Mexican food. I enjoyed every bite, here's what I tasted: Red Snapper Ceviche- This was Amazing! Every bite was flavorful and delicious. I ate it with the tostada chips. 5 stars! Black Mole steak- Very good! I'm not a big fan of mole but this may have changed my mind. The presentation is also instagram worthy, try it! I was immediately impressed by the space: the space is beautiful, with a very modern design and rich textures throughout like the wood elements to the sand features. The interior is truly stunning. Our service was excellent. Eric, our server, was incredibly friendly and gave thoughtful recommendations. He had a great personality that added to our experience. We came with a group of six and came to try most of the menu and split everything: For appetizers, the hamachi tiradito was outstanding: fresh, vibrant, and the sauce was so good I could drink it. The stuffed pepper had a wonderfully cheesy, savory sauce and bright peppers, but at $18, it felt slightly underwhelming. The roasted cabbage with green pipian was a cozy, elevated dish that I really liked. The heirloom tomato burrata salad was solid but I would say nothing new, and the macha cauliflower was rich and buttery. For entrees, the clear standout was the filet mignon with black mole. It was perfectly cooked, with a delicate, smoky mole that was unforgettable. In comparison, the lobster roll, braised porcelet, salmon, and chicken were good but less memorable. They didn't stand out to me as much as the filet mignon. Overall, while I was hoping for more pronounced Mexican influences, the menu leaned heavily toward New American, especially all the entrees like the lobster roll. When the flavors embraced Mexican roots, the dishes truly shined. I'd love to see the kitchen lean into that even more. I probably wouldn't come back just because it was pretty expensive and there are better New American and better upscaled Mexican places, Mexta tried to be both to cater to a wider audience. read more

What a beautifully decorated space, light and airy, making you forget you just strolled off downtown's 6th street. The hospitality was second to none, the owner even providing personal recommendations for a friend's upcoming trip to Oaxaca. The environment of this restaurant was nice. I will give them that in how well everything is set up. But I would never go again PERSONALLY! This wasn't my style and the fact that service was so slow. Everyone at the table could agree and we were constantly saying "where's our waiter?" Mexta is in the heart of downtown with a great central location. Parking is validated (although we didn't know that) the pluses: the vibes are immaculate. It's giving tulum in the heart of Austin downtown. The location feels so open and airy because of the high ceilings and everything from the cups and plates and silverware is giving extravagant. The servers are nice and decently knowledgeable. The desserts are very different and I hadn't tried anything like the cheesecake before. The minuses: the food is decent but very expensive. We split a couple apps that were small that were good but not mindblowingly good. As a vegetarian there were some options and while I did really like my cauliflower dish,it was a lot to pay for cauliflower. Overall for two people who got a drink app entree and dessert it was around 250 with tip (125 pp) and the meal was relatively forgettable. read more

Met some friends for a holiday dinner here last week. We shared some apps and I had the tortilla lobster bisque which was yummy. They were able to seat us at our table for 6 (high top) quickly and they were attentive, but we did have to ask the server for water refills a few times. The bartender on duty that night was very nice and took multiple photos of us gals. I was lucky enough to get street parking not too far and found out later they validate in the Littlefield garage which none of us knew about before. Went to Mexta for Valentines this year and came in at 5pm to get a walk in spot. They sat us at the corner of the bar which was great. All the staff were very kind and attentive. When asked "still" water or sparkling we said still and received a carbonated water which was not our favorite, not a huge deal though. For appetizers we ordered Guacamole with the pork belly in it and the Cauliflower entree as a suggestion from our server. These were both very delicious with the Guacamole tasted extremely fresh and the pork belly added a nice savory and texture bonus. The cauliflower had a creamy, light sauce that was so good and filled us up a good amount. My catch of the day entree was good but a bit odd. Kind of interesting tasting refried black bean side, optional oily sauce, plantain purée (really good) and fish with head and skin. Making tacos out of it was yummy but would have preferred more options / different options to accompany. Additionally for 55 bucks I felt the fish should have tasted a bit better. Overall, prices were expensive and while presentation and quality were great I did not think price was fully aligned. 20 dollars for Guacamole and then $5 for tortilla chips and $8 for pork belly. I truly felt my $200 dollars would have gone much further at an Uchi or Uchiko for a nice dinner. Atmosphere inside is great, ambient and reminds me of Mexico. We had one of the best dinners that our supper club, Tasting Collective, had at Mexta last night. As soon as we walked in, we were entranced by the lush, exotic interiors imported from Mexico. This downtown location used to be Louie's 106 (if you are an old Austinite), conveniently close to the Driskill. From the inventive cocktails (I had the Chica De Humo and Patrona), to the food : Mexta guacamole with 4 salsas ranging in heat, Pork belly taco, Pacific Red Snapper Ceviche, Smoked Filet Mignon, and the decadent Flan de Abuela, we raved at the execution, the flavors and the freshness of each dish. The members in my group all agreed that this was the best dinner/experience we've had all year. The chefs are exceptionally gracious and passionate about their creations and it showed. New place right in the heart of downtown and they have valet parking too. Modern decor in the restaurant as it looks like Tulum with brick and wood trees all over with nice low lighting. Service was perfect, not too quick or slow and got drinks with us not being rush to flip the table. Shrimp tacos were delicious if you want as an appetizer, sauce was the best part. Stuffed pepper had a nice taste as it was soaked in their green sauce. We ordered steak which was cooked all the way and steamed to unveil, salmon was so tender with plenty of toppings and sauce. We had an amazing Anniversary dinner at Mexta. The overall ambiance was fantastic. The decor really transported us to Mexico. From the moment we walked in the service was impeccable. Our waitress (I forgot her name, lovely young girl with a full arm sleeve tattoo) was polite and helpful. She had great recommendations. When we got to our table they had a cute sign to say "Happy Anniversary". The drinks we well made and unique. We ordered Guacamole (with chicharrones), Hamachi ceviche, bone marrow (with onions), smoke filet, and Baja tacos, chocmaiz dessert. Everything was great! Well seasoned and classic Mexican flavors. Bright, acidic and lots of flavor. The tostadas they served it with were delicious. Imagine a corn chip but 10x times flavor. Perfectly seasoned. The oaxcan tetela was excellent. Packed with flavor the beans and cheese. The mole sauce was excellent. The dish that I don't recommend is the burrata, tomato with Hamachi salad. I think it's ballsy for a restaurant to put a dish with fish and cheese. This was really bland the cheese and hamachi did not work. There was a lack of seasoning. I also got the Mexta Lobster roll as my main. The Alton flavors sounded interesting which enticed me.The lobster roll was so over dressed in mayo sauces. We were unfortunately not overly impressed with our visit to Mexta. I came specifically for the Eat for Impact menu this month, since there aren't many (if any) vegan options typically. They didn't give us the menu for Eat for Impact until we asked, which I felt was unfortunate, since many may have been interested but didn't know about it. The ambience is very upscale and nice and service was wonderful. However, the prices seemed inflated by at least 50% and the food just doesn't compete with places like ATX Cocina, Suerte, and Comedor. $20 for guacamole is just kind of crazy - it was delicious, but at the end of the day, it was guacamole. I enjoyed the vegan mole piquillos and would love to see them on the regular menu - they were a rather small portion and maybe not the quality I expect from the other restaurants I've been to.
