Stopped by Mr. D's Diner for breakfast and had an enjoyable experience. It was a busy morning, so there was a bit of a wait before we were greeted, but the staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to offer recommendations. Once we placed our order, the food came out surprisingly fast. The menu is huge, with plenty of classic breakfast choices, so even picky eaters will have no problem finding something they like. I ordered the pancakes, and they were fluffy, flavorful, and definitely worth ordering again. Before leaving, I couldn't help but notice the display of mini pies and fresh pastries. They looked delicious and gave the diner that classic hometown feel. I'll definitely be trying one on my next visit. I've been to Mr. D's Diner a few times now and can't believe I'm only reviewing it now. Shame on me. As someone who was spoiled by truly great chicken fried steak back when I lived in the Pacific Northwest, I'll admit I'm picky. Down here in this part of OC, there aren't many spots that even come close. Mr. D's? Not quite PNW-level--but honestly, pretty darn acceptable (and that says a lot lol). Their chicken fried steak comes out generous: well-battered, nicely fried, served with country potatoes and veggies. I do miss a good old biscuit and chunky, meaty gravy, but their version--while smoother and less chunky--is still tasty and satisfying.( but seriously, you could add more lol) We had an early family dinner here and everything hit the spot. I had the chicken fried steak, my fiancé ordered the chilaquiles, and the kids went classic with a BLT and a hamburger, both with fries. No complaints all around. Service is friendly and efficient, the restaurant is clean, bright, and very well kept. And the décor? Full-on 1950s diner vibes--done right. Not kitschy, not cheap-looking, just straight-up retro cool. Kudos to the Mr. D's team for committing to the theme. I didn't try the pies yet (they're staring at you from the display case), but they looked tempting enough that I know I'll be back. Solid diner, generous portions, good vibes. After new ownership(or so we are told) the firing of Angela, Staci and many others. Service is horrible and food is not as good as it was. We used to be regulars and would stop in 2-3 days a week. Always had a good time before but not since. Multiple trips to an empty bar area, waited at least 10 mins or more to even be greeted. Bartender even asked us if it was acceptable to re-use glasses for beer refills, . Poorly trained staff that is replacing seasoned vets that knew how to get the job done and well. My wife even went in to meet her sister in law for a drink, my wife waited in the car due to 2 individuals that walked in looking like they were going to rob the place, ended up being the greeters at the front, dressed horribly in baggy clothes and quite honestly looked like gang bangers. The bar area was busy for a Tuesday night. They have a full bar, but this is definitely not a high end craft cocktail place so go in with that mindset and it's fine. I had the Chicken Gyro which was actually really good. Recommend the tzatziki sauce on the side. This also comes with fries, side salad or tots. They aren't pictured because my fries came out separately in a fresh basket which was very tasty. It was bad. I can't sugarcoat it sorry. We live nearby and wanted to try it so we did. Everything looked very old school which is fine but it just looked like it wasn't kept well for decades. There was also a weird old smell too. There weren't a lot of people either which I feel is weird for a brunch spot on a weekend morning. The service was good, I don't want to bash on that. It was the food that felt very undone and not tasty at all. We ordered an egg benedict meal with steak and eggs. It was bland, no seasoning, very basic, egg was too runny and surprisingly watery, and just tasted like nothing special. The only saving grace was maybe the gravy. The coffee was also watery and nothing great. For $50, we compared it to a better meal such as sushi or steak that we could've had. I could probably make this meal better at home but again, we just wanted to try it out. My husband also tried going to the bathroom and he had to turn back because there was a bad smell. Called in a to-go order on a Fri night. When i arrived for pickup, the counter girl was really nice and helpful. Mr D's is always clean, well lit, and not too noisy. I was looking for fish-n-chips, and Mr D's has a dinner plate that is exactly what i was looking for. The cole slaw was refreshing, and not too sweet, and fries were crispy, and piping hot. However, the fish was disappointing. The dinner is described on the menu as a 4 piece dinner. The fish portions are small, however, and so the meal comes across more like a 4-fish-stick dinner than a 4-fish-filet dinner. Food,ambiance and customer service is always so on point. I had the breakfast plater and my friend had the biscuits and gravy. Lots of food and great for sharing. I would suggest this as a family friendly restaurant with accommodations for small business accommodations as well. Plenty of booths and tables. I see the parking lot has handicap excisability but still has ramp to door. So that's a plus,and again a nice place to visit its unique decor. We came to eat at Mr. D's around noon. One nice thing is they serve breakfast all day. I ordered an omelette and had them remove one item and substitute another. The omelette came with potatoes and also an option of substituting a pancake for toast, which I did. On a positive note the pancake was very good. Nice and fluffy. On a negative note I did not think the omelette was anything special. Overall, I was unimpressed with the omelette and have had much better omelettes at other locations. She is quick to give us our menus, she is patient with us while we choose what to order. Even when she gets busy, she is always ready for us to order. We love the ambiance at the bar area. Had Sunday morning breakfast here and let me just say don't get the coffee. It was so weak, I could finish the cup in like 2 sips, it was as if I was drinking water, for a diner I would expect better. The waitress who took my order was nice and the theme inside the place was actually really cool! I had high hopes for the place. I ordered the country breakfast and that was actually okay. I wasn't a fan of the eggs but the hashbrowns and biscuit and gravy with the sausage patty on it was good. I've wanted to try this place for a long time. My name starts with a D, so it felt fitting. From the outside it's big, bold, flashy--almost like Good Burger meets a 1950s roadside diner. Walking in, it fully commits to the theme. Marilyn Monroe front and center, Elvis nearby, a Christmas tree this time of year, even a Cadillac front-end turned into a table. It's decked out, full-on retro, very Pulp Fiction energy. Visually, they nailed it. The food, unfortunately, didn't live up to the setting. It was fine, but nothing memorable. A bit over-salted and over-seasoned, especially the hash browns. I ordered what I think was the Euro or California omelet--huge portion, but oddly light on egg. That was confusing. The coffee situation was also disappointing. Pre-packaged half-and-half containers feel wrong in a diner. When you think diner coffee, you think real cream, not tiny plastic pods. That kind of thing just screams chain behavior. Service was great, friendly and attentive, though it was slow--rainy day, understandable. The interior is easily the highlight. The ingredients, however, feel cheap in places. Corn syrup ketchup on the counter doesn't exactly match the care put into the decor. You don't have to be artisanal, but you also don't have to cut corners like that. Overall, it's a fun place to look at and experience once. The atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting. I just wish the food and details matched the effort put into the theme. read more

This place has really gone downhill... Service is SLOW, 15mins just to place an order, coupled with tiny 2 person booths that they try to stuff 4 people into, all for Denny's level food. The coffee was terrible, they changed the vanilla creamer (yuck) and what ever they put on the toast definitely wasn't butter. The bacon was so salty I couldn't eat it. Good food but service was HORRIBLE!!! It was not busy AT ALL. We were out of water for at least 10 minutes and finally saw another server and asked her for more water. Nobody ever came by to ask how everything was and luckily we enjoyed the food. Waited for 10 minutes at the front counter to pay our bill and NOBODY came by to take our money. We could have left and I don't think anyone would have known...but we didn't leave without paying. Not sure if we even want to give this place a second chance because the service was so bad. So I thought a kid's burger and some onion rings would hit the spot. Server told me I could not order anything from the kids menu, "because I was not a kid." He left and came back to tell me that the manager would "allow me to order the kids burger but would charge me an additional $3.49! Is normal? Never had that happen before. Every time my loved ones and I go here, it is consistently a pleasurable experience. For starters, the 1950s vibe the restaurant boasts upon entry makes it a huge draw. It is hard not to smile when looking at some of the decor. Furthermore, the grub always hits the spot, especially when it comes to their breakfast selection. The fact that they serve breakfast all day makes this customer a very happy camper, to say the least! On top of that, I have never been disappointed insofar as the quality of service provided. The servers are all friendly and very attentive to their duties. The last time I made it out to Mr. D's, Miriam in particular was a wonderful waitress. Bland food. My loved one hardly puts any seasoning on their food and they even said the food here was bland, so I know it was extremely bland based on her opinion. The atmosphere was depressing and the restaurant looks run down. The server seemed like he wanted to be anywhere else but at work. I got the strawberry spring salad and it was nasty. How the heck does a place mess up a salad in such a horrible way? If you want frozen and cheap food cooked worse than you can do at home with a microwave, come to Mr. D's.
