Walking in I would expect a much higher quality of food but I was sadly extremely disappointed. I ordered a bbq beef sub and to be perfectly honest I should have just went to the closest 7-11 gas station and looked for a pre wrapped sub because I'd probably save money and get a better sandwich. The sandwich was extremely plain. The bread was relatively dry and the then the bbq beef was just thrown in there. Meat and bread, I'd expect a bit more for $17. I wasn't asked for any vegetables, cheese or to add anything in. The bbq sauce that was used was also a huge issue. It was extremely watery and lacked flavor. I was absolutely shocked when I got home to eat and THIS is what I saw. This place has potential to be great but what an absolute lackluster delivery. They were just getting ready to close up and unfortunately our metrolink broke down so we walked to the closest food spot that had AC and all the staff were so kind and comforting to us. I will start off by saying I got an Egg Salad sandwich, so maybe that is where I went wrong but there were other reviews RAVING about the freshly made egg salad. I love a good egg salad sandwich. But this was gross, it was more like a Mayo sandwich with some egg. It was not even good Mayo. Tasted stale almost. And worst of all it wasn't cold. It was cool, not cold almost bordering on room temp. I could only stomach two bites. And then I threw it out. The only positives about this sandwich were the bread, it was soft and delicious roll, the shredded lettuce seemed fresh, and the avocado that I added was good. The girl behind the counter was nice. What I am assuming was owner was behind the counter as well. He kept filling up a coffee mug with soda from the soda fountain which I found somewhat odd and off putting. As someone who absolutely loves sandwiches, I am always on the hunt for the next great sub spot. My friend and I recently moved to Yorba Linda and decided to give DW Subs a try after seeing it had over 300 reviews and a 4.3 rating on Yelp. When we walked in, we quickly realized this place has been around for decades. I would guess since the 1970s. The interior definitely reflects that, with an old-school vibe that looks like it has not changed much over the years. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the best food spots look like time capsules, so we kept an open mind. I ordered a turkey sandwich and my friend went with roast beef. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype. When we got home and took our first few bites, we were both shocked at how bad the sandwiches were. The turkey was soggy and had a strange, slimy texture. The roast beef was, without question, the worst roast beef sandwich either of us has ever had. The taste, the smell, and the look were all wrong. Then I remembered seeing them microwave the roast beef when we ordered. That explained a lot. I hate leaving negative reviews, especially for a place that is clearly a part of the local community, but I feel obligated to be honest. I genuinely do not understand how this spot has such high ratings. To make it worse, the prices were surprisingly high. Way more expensive than most major sandwich shops, but with none of the quality. At least at those places, you finish your sandwich. Really disappointing experience. Turkey club for the win!! 20 years ago, I used to work on Hunter, so DW's was a regular in our lunch rotation. Now I live and work farther away from here. A few months ago, I had occasion to swing by DW's for a sub. Of course, I had to get a turkey club! I gladly share that it was just as good as it was 2 decades ago. There's even a chance it was better. Something about their bacon, just crunchy and craveable - and I'm not someone who ever adds bacon to anything, because it does not make everything better. And that Italian dressing Since rediscovering DW's, I've made an effort to swing through a few times. Couple notes: they also make a killer chocolate malt. Get it extra thicc... it's worth an extra buck. There's a wonderful girl who works weekday afternoons. Not only is she super friendly, but I'm convinced she is the secret reason everything tastes so great, because each time she's been there, the sandwich and malt have been EPIC! Last time a guy was working, and the sandwich didn't hit quite the same. To be fair, I also took my sandwich home (over 30 minutes away), and I usually eat it at DW's. The bread wasn't quite as fresh that day... so might not have been his fault. I've been here enough times to know that one off day was the exception, and not the rule. Better than Subway! Let me be as clear as Yelp guidelines are. I could care less if the employees wear masks, this is a FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS which means they can do whatever they want. Normally I trust the yelpers to find me a neighborhood gem. Unfortunately my experience fell short of the hype. What bothered me was this shop did not require masks nor did the staff wear any PPE as well. The customer in front of me did not wear a mask nor did he bother following any social distancing. So, why bother separating tables if you're not going to follow simple PPE guidelines? I probably should have just walked out since I wasn't very comfortable about the lack of safety measures from this restaurant. (Hey, even the liquor store next door had a sign asking people to wear their mask.) Aside from the lack of PPE, here's my food experience: I ordered the 7 inch meatball and the (unmasked) person behind the counter took out a Pyrex glass and scooped up meatballs from a slow cooker and placed them in the Pyrex. Then she placed the Pyrex in the microwave?!! It was past 11 am, and I was shocked that the meatballs were not already cooked... so does that mean these leftover meatballs were either sitting overnight in the fridge? Or these are premade meatballs that had sauce dumped on top and are microwaved as needed? I could've save myself the eight dollars and gone to the Stater Bros next door, and bought a bag of meatballs and sauce and made it myself at home. Back home: When I opened up my sandwich, the meatballs were uniformly made, and the meat was soft? which led me to believe they're frozen and store bought. The saving grace was the soft bread, but I ended up lightly toasting it because it wouldn't hold up to the saucy meatballs. Plus I had to melt the cheese that was hardening on my sandwich. I make every attempt to go out of my way to help out the small business, especially during this pandemic. But quite frankly, I find it hard to give this place a glowing review considering they are not taking extra measures to protect the customers, or have food ready, instead of heating up with the microwave. I am giving this place three generous stars, because it is a small business. Had it been a chain, they would've been shut down for COVID safety violation! Such a disappointment. Been wanting to try it for a long time. Pictures looked decent, got a few Meatballs and the Turkey Club. There was very little turkey on the sandwich, paper thin slices of tomato, It was more bread than anything, its only saving grace was the bacon seemed fresh. The meatballs were clearly just frozen meatballs from Sam's Club or Restaurant Depot. Now this wouldn't be so bad, but it was over $50 for three 7inchers and one 12inch. There is no reason for a 4.3 star rating . This is a family owned sub sandwich shop. They always smile when you come in to order. I have been going here since they opened. They have never messed up my order. DW's Subs makes Subway look bad. They put on alot more meat and everything is much more fresh. Even the rolls seem better than other sub places. They also do the extra sometimes and will put dressing containers on the side, extra mayo or other extras when asked. Pretty good considering the economy. We have been coming here for 20+ years. Even flew an assistant in to pick them up years ago while we were living on east coast. We LOVED this place. However the quality has gone downhill BAD. Our subs had almost nothing inside them, tasted like someone spilled salt on them, and the bread was hard and dry. Had we not driven home to Carlsbad to enjoy them, I would have asked for a refund. Called for my first ever complaint to them. The "manager" calls from a blocked number, sounds about 16 giggles and tells me the bread was fresh today, and the avocado comes frozen so they "add a lot of salt" to it to make it soft. (What?) Admits they had the SAME COMPLAINTS TODAY. Offers no refund, only solution is "next time you're here I can give you a couple of free sandwiches". Not free if you're replacing them and we ordered SEVEN that came in this condition. After 20 ish years, and hundreds of visits, no longer a customer, and definitely not risking the time and money again. Oh and the dressing that IS on there is only bc we paid for a bottle to have as extra. Zero dressing or mayo on sandwich. read more
