In the area for the Dodgers World Series parade (Go Blue!), and my aunt wanted to take me to a nice breakfast before my flight. The owner was our waiter and I was trying to decide between an omelette and the breakfast burrito. He recommended the chorizo burrito. Great suggestion! I was a little wary of a breakfast burrito with a $16 price tag, but the plate is actually two good-sized burritos. It's served with some medium-spicy, chunky green salsa. I had the choice of Tapatio or Cholula, and I'm a Cholula dude, so I opened the burrito and sprinkled it on. The chorizo was very mild, which I appreciated because of my looming flight. The potatoes inside were hash browns and really added to the meal. The flavors were awesome. One of the best breakfast burritos I've had. Service was good, food was prompt and fresh (not reheated). The restaurant sits in the corner of your typical type of OC strip mall, so it was not a big space. If I were just passing by and saw a place called The Mini Gourmet, I probably would never have stopped by, thinking it was just a catering place. A name change could go a long way to drawing a non-local crowd. read more

his is a small family Mom and Pop style restaurant which is very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. My review,however, is based on the food. I ordered eggs Benedict but sadly had to send it back. The eggs were hard and the sauce had a strange dull yellow color with very little flavor. It made me wonder if the sauce was from a can And not fresh, likely having unhealthy ingredients in it. My hashbrowns were well cooked in crispy as I requested. However, I could taste the oil that they cooked the potatoes in and this flavor was not particularly pleasant. I don't normally notice the taste of the oil from hashbrowns. They kindly allowed me to order something else and I had an omelette with bacon and Avocado. The Avocado was generous and I enjoyed the omelette. I asked that it would be cooked soft to avoid it being Dry, having that Brown crust on the eggs which can happen at many restaurants. I ordered a biscuit with this meal and like so many restaurants it was rather heavy. There was nothing outstanding about it but it was OK and I ate it. I have yet to find a good biscuit in a restaurant. The O'Brien potatoes were large chunks and didn't have any special seasoning besides salt. They were probably fine for someone who likes bland food. There was very little pepper and onion mixed in. My partner ordered a skillet. He found the whole thing rather flavorless and lacking much flavor , as well as a Lytle or cooked and dry. This is a popular place that I don't know if it's because of their breakfast or their lunches. Many people are probably satisfied with a very ordinary meal with nothing particularly outstanding at the meal and sometimes slacking certain qualities. If you're not particular you'll probably find something very good that you will enjoy. read more

My mom agreed the chicken was dry, veggies weren't great, the rice & beans were mediocre & the very tiny cup of salsa was too spicy. I wish they would've had pico de gallo or mild salsa. The owner happened to be our server. We asked him for two waters with a lemon wedge, he returned to take our order without the water. I asked him to bring a side of butter, he never did bring it. In fact, he never returned to ask if we needed anything (or I could have reminded him about the butter & asked for mild salsa). When I was paying the bill, I did something I almost never do, I very politely told him, "since you're the owner & my mom likes coming here, I'll mention the chicken was dry" he just looked at me blankly & didn't reply. I wasn't hoping he'd comp the $17 fajitas or give us a discount for an upcoming visit (I was fine he didn't offer anything) I just wanted him to have some helpful feedback. I can't believe this is my first time here because this is just the type of breakfast place I usually seek out. Based on reviews and because I'm a biscuits and gravy fanatic, I ordered the Big Biscuit combo which is two biscuit sandwiches, potatoes and a side of gravy. It's expensive but if they make it right it's worth it. Unfortunately, and despite the name of the restaurant, nothing tasted freshly made. The biscuits, sausage patties, potatoes, and gravy all would be house-made in a gourmet restaurant but not here. The main thing to get right is the gravy which is so easy to make that it's not worth using a mix or a can. The gravy I was served was bland and artificial tasting. I tried salt and pepper but it still tasted like water thickened with corn starch. The biscuits were the doughy not flakey kind and were the same heavy texture throughout which is a sure sign of frozen reheated biscuits. The sausage patties were the only properly seasoned item on the plate. The scrambled eggs inside the biscuits were fine but seemed like less than one egg per sandwich. The sandwich was 90% biscuit dough, 10% everything else. The potatoes were the same frozen shredded potatoes that you get everywhere but these were not seasoned. Overall, it will like gas station food. The service and atmosphere were great, so I hope they can improve their breakfast. See my other reviews to find excellent country gravy in OC. read more

We had a group of six, so I got there early to score one of their extended tables. It's basically two booths for attached by a barrier, which, when taken down can make it a table for eight.
