Service was friendly and quick. Restrooms are available inside. Hot lattes were delicious but more so "WARM LATTES" and not actually HOT /: which was disappointing but the flavor was good. We got the coffee flight: Pistachio, Chocolate, & Horchata. Food was good but it lacked seasoning - i definitely had to add quite a bit of salt and hot sauce to enjoy it. Came here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon. Very informal brunch spot/diner. Definitely was more casual than expected. We got greeted and shown to a large dining area. We ordered the special coffee flight which includes horchata, macadamia, pistachio, and abuelita. My favorite was the abuelita and macadamia. The horchata was a bit too sweet for me and the pistachio had a weird aftertaste. I got the pork omelette which came incomplete (without the beans). They brought it out after I asked them about it. My husband got the American breakfast with pancakes. Pancake was a bit too salty in some areas. The sausages were a but burnt but they brought out new sausages to make up for it. Overall the food was decent enough. With the small minor issues, the service was great at making the situation better. Kevin was very attentive, answered all our questions, and even brought out an in house habanero sauce that was very spicy for us to try. The Chilango dishes were a new take on the typical omelette because they are stuffed with your choice of chilaquiles. The chilaquiles dishes themselves were also good and had a good crunch to them that you didn't find in the Chilangos. All dishes were on a bed of refried black beans, which added a good balance. Bottom Line Up Front: This is a fun breakfast place to go to with your significant other or a group of friends ... if you're OK with premium prices. The Setting: Let me paint the picture -- the walls are covered with cool illustrations of birds, butterflies, Care Bears, Pinky & the Brain, and Marilyn Monroe. There's also accent walls with faux leaves and neon pink signs with various saying, like "Living the Brunch Life." Yes, the aesthetic lacks cohesion and feels pretty ADHD, but it does immediately set a fun vibe. The Food: My wife and I shared one dish -- the Madres Chilaquiles -- so we can't speak to the whole menu. However, the chilaquiles was just alright. The fried tortilla chips was missing that delicate balance of flavorful softness and fresh crispness on the edges. Unfortunately, they were just soggy with minimal flavors other than a mild kick from the salsa. I didn't taste any cheese, crema, or cilantro. The birria was a little dry and didn't pull apart easily as I expected. On the positive side, the consome dip that accompanied the birria was quite good. Meanwhile, the scrambled eggs were perfect. Plus, the portions were generous! Like I said, my wife and I split the dish and were both satisfied. The Drinks: Again, my wife split a beverage ... or should I say beverages. That's because we got the Special Coffee Flight, which had 4 different small coffees -- pistachio, horchata, masapan, and Abuelita's hot chocolate. All were quite good, with the Abuelita's being the best one. A restaurant always scores extra points when they offer a flight of drinks, allowing us to try more flavors than we normally would want or could afford. The Service: Our server was solid -- polite, knowledgeable, and checked in with us several times. The Cost: Madres Brunch gets a knock for following the trend of having high prices for foods that really aren't that expensive to make. (I mean, c'mon, it's basically breakfast food we could make at home!) Remember, my wife and I shared a dish and a drink, yet our bill came out to about $48 ... without tip. (I couldn't imagine paying $90 for breakfast if the two of us each got a dish and a drink!) Conclusion: Based on the food and the inflated prices, I would normally give this place 3 out of 5 stars. The coffee and the atmosphere definitely bumps that rating up to a 3.5 out of 5. However, because the service was good, I'm happy to round up to a 4 out of 5 rating (since I can't do half stars). Great contemporary Mexican-American brunch restaurant. Went there recently for the first time with a friend for brunch on a Sunday. Service was fast and friendly. My friend had the Wilma pancakes (with fruity pebbles creamy condensed milk sauce). I'm often ambivalent about pancakes, but these were some of the best pancakes I've had in years: soft and fluffy without being mushy, a bit of crispness on the outside, sweet but not too sweet, with some extra flavor and depth from the fruity pebbles inclusions and the condensed milk sauce. They also presented the sauce in a biscuit cutter in the middle of the pancake, which is then lifted so the sauce and colorful fruity pebbles cascade over the pancake evenly. I had the Madres chilaquiles, one of their signature dishes. Also the best chilaquiles I've had in quite a while. They have a huge selection of coffees and coffee alternatives. Be aware that the mall is *much* easier to find and access from Orangethorpe Ave than from Lakeview Ave; you can access it from the latter but there's no signage on Lakeview and there's some construction on that side, so we initially drove past it. Huge parking lot which is shared with a small shopping center/strip mall. I look forward to coming back and trying other options. (They actually have quite a few locations now) but I came here for brunch with my friends on Sunday - I was worried the wait would be long but maybe we came early so there wasn't a wait at all. I got the steak & eggs - steak was cooked perfectly. Potatoes were good, I didn't care too much for the 'toast' that they had though. My husband got the birria benedict and he said it was really good & different. My friends got the birria chilaquiles & I think they enjoyed it as well. My toddler got the easter pancake (which i tried) and it was okay, very sweet. We also got a flight of refreshers, a margarita flight & the easter latte. The inside of this place was so cute and lively. They played good music and their food was delicious. Very spacious so you didn't feel like you were very close to a lot of people which was great if you have a big party. Service was very fast and friendly and recommended a lot of good things. We got the mole Chilaquiles, the original omelette with sausage, pancakes, a Michelada and the coffee flight. All I would definitely recommend. I definitely want to come back and try their different French toast and another Chilaquiles. For the flights, my favorite had to be either the Horchata or the Mazapan. I still liked it, my sister on the other hand wasn't particularly into it. Our waiter was very polite, friendly and accommodating. Food - I ordered the madres lemonade and "the one". The lemonade was really interesting had a coconut milk base with strawberries in it, which gave it a creamy texture with a sweet finish, definitely not your conventional lemonade but it is still good. For the sandwich, the bread had a perfect milky/pillowy texture and gave a Texas toast vibe. The meat was very flavorful and all the ingredients were cooked well and gave the sandwich a dynamic range of texture from crunchy with the chicharons and bacon, to soft with the tender meat. The consume supplied as well was very standard but done well. The potatoes were done perfectly where they had a nice golden crust on the outside with a flufffy soft yellow inside texture. Service - the service was quick and efficient, but I ordered the golden bowl for takeout for my mother which I think was supposed to have salmon in it but there was no salmon, and the portion was extremely smaller than what I expected which is disappointing. Just finished eating here. I was so disappointed with the service. When we arrived, there was no hostess, no list, and an entryway full of people. We were told by other waiting customers that they were waiting as well. We were wrongly seated, because they had forgetting there was a party ahead of us. We waited 30 minutes to be seated after being told it was a 10 minute wait. Once we were finally seated, it took another 20 minutes to order drinks. One of our plates came out wrong, and they admitted to bringing the wrong plate. They confirmed our order, then proceeded to bring out the correct plate wrongly. It was a constant battle of trying to get someone's attention and waiting for items that were ordered. I have been to this location before and never experienced this type of service. The ambiance is great and there are multiple locations. I'm not sure if people called out and they were short-staffed, but there was no transparency to the situation, no apologies, and no compensation in any format. We were never checked on.
