The restaurant has a cute atmosphere, and the service was friendly and attentive. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately, the food was disappointing. Overall, everything lacked flavor, although I will say the red salsa served with the chips was delicious. My friend ordered the avocado toast, but it was basically just a slice of bread with sliced avocado--no seasoning, condiments, or anything to make it stand out. The small garden salad was equally underwhelming, consisting of only romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes with no dressing or even a drizzle of olive oil. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, but they were more like open-faced boiled eggs since the yolks were completely hard instead of runny. The café de olla had a nice flavor, but it was much sweeter than expected. I think it would be better if they served it unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) and let customers adjust the sugar to their own taste. Came here for a friends brunch. We shared the media omelette, pistachio, waffle, and chicken Chilaquiles. I ordered the Alf Fresca's flight and my friend ordered the coffee flight. One of my drinks was super watery so I asked for them to replace it and it was much better the second time around. The video omelette lacked a lot of flavor to us and we didn't even end up finishing that. The chicken Cilla has had so much flavor and it was very delicious. That was our favorite for our savory item. That pistachio waffle was immaculate too. Perfect amount of sweetness with that ice cream right on top. To be honest, it wasn't that packed in our service was very slow. There was a point where I literally had to get up to ask for plates for our shareable. It was a little stuffy in there as well. I felt like their AC should've been on a little bit higher. Also, the restroom reeked of mildew. They gotta do something about that smell in there. Madres Brunch has a cute vibe with a menu full of brunch items. It's neat how they had drink flights where you can try a variety of flavors, including coffee, latte, mimosa, and margarita flights. Our server was also nice and friendly. * Chilaquiles Verdes + Steak 4/5 - The chilaquiles came with fried tortillas soaked in green sauce and topped with cheese, sour cream (we got this on the side), avocado, red onion, and an egg. It rests on a bed of beans which we opted not to get. The chilaquiles were pretty good. We got the steak addon which was okay at 3.5/5, not very flavorful. * Pistachio Waffles 4/5 - This came with 2 pistachio waffles, pistachio ice cream, strawberry and caramel syrup, condensed milk, and topped with real pistachios. It was a nice to try something different. The waffle was good, but it didn't have a lot of pistachio flavor. We also got drinks. Both the Strawberry Horchata and the Mazapan Latte were very good 5/5. Service was friendly and quick. Restrooms are available inside. Hot lattes were delicious but more so "WARM LATTES" and not actually HOT /: which was disappointing but the flavor was good. We got the coffee flight: Pistachio, Chocolate, & Horchata. Food was good but it lacked seasoning - i definitely had to add quite a bit of salt and hot sauce to enjoy it. I would probably go somewhere else if I wanted eggs Benedict. We ordered the Birria eggs Benedict and the chilaquiles. I was very excited to try this place after seeing all the hype on Instagram and Yelp, but unfortunately, we left disappointed. Before arriving, we looked at the menu on their website so we could decide what to order. To our surprise, the online menu was inaccurate, and they had completely removed their kids' menu without updating their website. I ended up having to order something different than what I had my heart set on--the avocado toast with steak. Instead, our server recommended the huevos divorciados, while my daughter was left with the only "kid-friendly" option: a plain waffle. My husband ordered the birria omelet, which was described as being topped with pork rinds. There was literally one tiny piece on the entire dish. Thankfully, the birria itself was flavorful, but the presentation definitely missed the mark. My huevos divorciados were served cold, while the potatoes on the plate were piping hot. That made it seem like my food had been sitting for a while before the plate was finished and served. Overall, I was truly disappointed with our experience and won't be returning. Came here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon. Very informal brunch spot/diner. Definitely was more casual than expected. We got greeted and shown to a large dining area. We ordered the special coffee flight which includes horchata, macadamia, pistachio, and abuelita. My favorite was the abuelita and macadamia. The horchata was a bit too sweet for me and the pistachio had a weird aftertaste. I got the pork omelette which came incomplete (without the beans). They brought it out after I asked them about it. My husband got the American breakfast with pancakes. Pancake was a bit too salty in some areas. The sausages were a but burnt but they brought out new sausages to make up for it. Overall the food was decent enough. With the small minor issues, the service was great at making the situation better. Stacks of colorful and buttery pancakes. Steak and egg chilaquiles. Good flavor with nice and thick tortilla pieces. 2 eggs would have been better than one, but overall, it was tasty. Cheesy hash potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast were what I would expect. It's your standard, straightforward breakfast except the difference is the hash is cheesy. I was surprised how empty this place was on a Saturday morning. We arrived around 9:00am and plenty of seating available. The place is pretty colorful and has a ton of photo worthy selfie spots (I'm sure there is a name for that). They do play music as well, not too loud but makes the place livelier for sure. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We ordered the Madres chilaquiles and Huevos Divorciados. My plate was a decent size and the bf's plate was in the smaller side but he said it was a good amount of food. He wasn't stuffed but could eat some more afterwards. I love the red sauce used in the chilaquiles. Quite spicy as well so be prepared. The tortillas have a nice crunch and stay crunchy throughout eating the meal. Great place for Mexican-American style brunch! I came here on a Saturday afternoon and there were plenty of open seats. I noticed a lot of the guests were large parties, so must be a good place for celebrations. The interior was cutely decorated with a lot of neon pink and fake green walls (very 2010 aesthetic). In terms of food, I recommend the chilaquiles, the portion size was huge and the sauce was delicious! I also ordered the chiliango, which is an omelette with chilaquiles stuffed inside. The chilaquiles dishes themselves were also good and had a good crunch to them that you didn't find in the Chilangos. All dishes were on a bed of refried black beans, which added a good balance. They were all big portions. The drinks were okay. Too sugary for our taste. We got the Nutella French toast for dessert and it did not disappoint! It was thick and fluffy and the grilled plantains definitely complemented it well. Would definitely get that again. read more

The worst food/breakfast we've ever had. DO NOT waste your time or money here if you want an American breakfast. The American breakfast consists of eggs, bacon or sausage, and a side. I wasted $30 on that and a coffee with a pancake and didn't eat it. The eggs are fake, powdered eggs, they were so flat and dry, the hash brown was overcooked and all one piece and flat, never seen eggs or hash brown like that before. The coffee was good, got a mazapan cold coffee. When I tell you that I'll never go back, I mean it. Some other members said their chillaquilles were fine, but that was about all I heard from the tables. The worst 30 I've ever spent in my life. The ambiance is cute, but that's about it. Our server didn't come to our table until 20 minutes after we were sat; we had to ask 5 times just for water and he kept saying he'd bring it but it took 40 minutes after our arrival to get it; he finally took our order and came back 10 minutes later asking if he had taken our order already... we had to resubmit it; we didn't get our food at the same time and had to beg for silverware and napkins - which didn't arrive until nearly 10 minutes after half of our table's food arrived; and to top it off, the food wasn't good. I try to support local restaurants that make a conscious effort to offer vegan options for breakfast. I was thrilled to find such options at Madre's. Vegan scramble with potatoes, beans, etc. as well as the vegan chocolate chip pancakes and waffles. Super appreciated!!!! However, every single time I dine there, the beans and breakfast potatoes are cold. I've worked in restaurants and know that the temp of these items is not up to health department food standards. The scramble itself always arrives hot and freshly made. I don't understand why the rest of the plate is served at or below room temperature. Please fix this! One wall has a Care Bear, another a has the Cheshire Cat, and so on. The music is on the loud side and is basically a DJ that is shown doing his thing on the various TVs in the dining room. The workers were friendly and attentive and willing to answer any questions. The food was just okay. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes with a fried egg. Just average flavor with nothing particularly standing out. My friend ordered an omelette that she enjoyed, but the egg was very thin, more like a crepe than an omelette. While it was a change from our usual restaurant choices, nothing really stood out to be crave-worthy. The place was very cute, a lot of pink aesthetic. It felt a little geared towards the influencer type, which is funny to see outside of Los Angeles but it was beautiful and clean nonetheless. The server was very kind and helpful, he was communicative and attentive. And the food! The food was great! It tasted good, AND seemed healthy and nutritious. Also, I appreciated their variety of options. I have a dairy allergy, and am often quite limited in what I can comfortably/safely eat, especially going out for breakfast. Bottom Line Up Front: This is a fun breakfast place to go to with your significant other or a group of friends ... if you're OK with premium prices. The Setting: Let me paint the picture -- the walls are covered with cool illustrations of birds, butterflies, Care Bears, Pinky & the Brain, and Marilyn Monroe. There's also accent walls with faux leaves and neon pink signs with various saying, like "Living the Brunch Life." Yes, the aesthetic lacks cohesion and feels pretty ADHD, but it does immediately set a fun vibe. The Food: My wife and I shared one dish -- the Madres Chilaquiles -- so we can't speak to the whole menu. However, the chilaquiles was just alright. The fried tortilla chips was missing that delicate balance of flavorful softness and fresh crispness on the edges. Unfortunately, they were just soggy with minimal flavors other than a mild kick from the salsa. I didn't taste any cheese, crema, or cilantro. The birria was a little dry and didn't pull apart easily as I expected. On the positive side, the consome dip that accompanied the birria was quite good. Meanwhile, the scrambled eggs were perfect. Plus, the portions were generous! Like I said, my wife and I split the dish and were both satisfied. The Drinks: Again, my wife split a beverage ... or should I say beverages. That's because we got the Special Coffee Flight, which had 4 different small coffees -- pistachio, horchata, masapan, and Abuelita's hot chocolate. All were quite good, with the Abuelita's being the best one. A restaurant always scores extra points when they offer a flight of drinks, allowing us to try more flavors than we normally would want or could afford. The Service: Our server was solid -- polite, knowledgeable, and checked in with us several times. The Cost: Madres Brunch gets a knock for following the trend of having high prices for foods that really aren't that expensive to make. (I mean, c'mon, it's basically breakfast food we could make at home!) Remember, my wife and I shared a dish and a drink, yet our bill came out to about $48 ... without tip. (I couldn't imagine paying $90 for breakfast if the two of us each got a dish and a drink!) Conclusion: Based on the food and the inflated prices, I would normally give this place 3 out of 5 stars. The coffee and the atmosphere definitely bumps that rating up to a 3.5 out of 5. However, because the service was good, I'm happy to round up to a 4 out of 5 rating (since I can't do half stars). I look forward to returning and trying other dishes to see if the other food is better. read more

My boyfriend and I were looking for a good Mexican brunch place during a visit to Orange County. We discovered this restaurant and the service was excellent. I ordered the Birria Benedict and unfortunately, it was just okay. The egg was overcooked and didn't have the oozing yoke eggs Benedict is supposed to have. It was served with a side salad, which I thought was odd. I would suggest serving with some type of breakfast potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the chiliquilles verde and those were delicious! Overall everything here was excellent. I'm always worried that these "Instagram" worth places are not going to have good food but that was absolutely NOT the case here. I knocked down one star because the hostess was not very friendly at all. When asked how many I told the hostess I would need a booster or high chair for my very obvious 3 year old. She sat us and I has to ask her for a high chair or booster again and she was very rude when she brought it over. Also there was some left over gunk on the table. Our server, Kevin, on the other hand was amazing. Super nice, answered my 500 questions about the menu, and made really great recommendations. The food was excellent. Seriously SO GOOD and the portion sizes were great! Be prepared that there is no kids menu, so you either have to order sides or a main entree. The decor is so fun and most definitely insta worthy!! Great contemporary Mexican-American brunch restaurant. Went there recently for the first time with a friend for brunch on a Sunday. Service was fast and friendly. My friend had the Wilma pancakes (with fruity pebbles creamy condensed milk sauce). I'm often ambivalent about pancakes, but these were some of the best pancakes I've had in years: soft and fluffy without being mushy, a bit of crispness on the outside, sweet but not too sweet, with some extra flavor and depth from the fruity pebbles inclusions and the condensed milk sauce. They also presented the sauce in a biscuit cutter in the middle of the pancake, which is then lifted so the sauce and colorful fruity pebbles cascade over the pancake evenly. I had the Madres chilaquiles, one of their signature dishes. Also the best chilaquiles I've had in quite a while. They have a huge selection of coffees and coffee alternatives. Be aware that the mall is *much* easier to find and access from Orangethorpe Ave than from Lakeview Ave; you can access it from the latter but there's no signage on Lakeview and there's some construction on that side, so we initially drove past it. Huge parking lot which is shared with a small shopping center/strip mall. I look forward to coming back and trying other options.
