The food is delicious, and the ambiance was fantastic. However, I can't stand it when waiters push their customers into preset pricing at these tourist traps. The staff, including our waiter, were incredibly sweet and attentive, which made the experience initially enjoyable. I ordered a few items that were perfect for both myself and my four year old, but the waiter kept recommending a set menu. Wondering why I was pretty much being pushed into it, I asked if it was a better deal, he assured me it was . I specifically mentioned my child's age, asking if he would be charged, and the waiter confidently said no. Unfortunately, I ended up paying nearly three times more for essentially the SAME MEAL. We stumbled into this charming little spot for a libation while out for a walk and it was packed but we made our way to the bar. After seeing several dishes being served we decided to sample the fare and asked for a table. We are very kindly lead to a table where our experience began all over again. The service was graciously friendly and the food superb. We tried the Mr Chao noodles which we delicious, the dumplings that were served with a crisp top and a phenomenal filet mignon perfectly prepared with exorbitant flavor and an impeccable crunchy edge. I'm going to start with the ambiance. Upon arrival there are so many individuals that greet you at the door. I love how they pull out the table for you to sit down. Super cool! Food was awful. Asked for vegan options, ordered the Mapo Tofu and fried rice. My friend had the Sweet N Sour Pork, she said it was nothing special. Rice was undercooked. My food must have had dairy or something foreign in it because I got food poisoning and became sick on the ride home. Definitely overpriced and not worth it. Staff seemed somewhat blah as well. For an asian restaurant, there was 0 asian people inside. We were the only asian party that existed in the whole restaurant. Food is a poor excuse for Chinese food. Trust me, I get it, Chinese American is a different cuisine. This place is stuck in the 80s, when people didn't know China was a country that consisted of multiple regional cuisines. My favorite of the lot are: Beverly Hills, Tribeca, MidTown and Miami - so far are the only other ones I've frequented. This is a spot where I follow a routin and that starts with a Lychee Martini (or they make a special 1/2 lychee 1/2 cosmo mix that is delish too). It's great people watching- at times you'll see real celebrities but most of the time you'll see people in the business who think they are celebrities as well as those who work in the business that feel they are the ones who make it all run. My routine continued: Gambo with Goodies (I don't know exactly what this is but its green, dry, crunchy, salty and addictive), Squab with Lettuce Cups accompanied by a yummy Sauce and the Chicken Satay (doused in amazing sauce) to start. Followed by: the Druken Fish (fresh Sole poached in Wine) - love this! or the Ma Mignon (tender sliced Filet Mignon) or the Beijing Peking Duck - this is the only spot where I will order Duck- served crispy, sliced and with amazing Plum Sauce. The Fried Rice here is so good- its doesn't seem fried. The ambiance at most locations is clean, sleek, modern- not too distracting because I think they want the main attractions to be the crowd and the food. We were at Mr Chow to take a promisingly lucrative meeting for an event with people that frequent this spot so my focus wasn't primarily on the three course duck dinner which was carved beautifully at the table. The glassware doesn't hold up to the wine list and the service is attentive but pushy. The up-sell is very much still alive apparently. You could literally go to any authentic Chinese restaurant for better tasting food and it would cost 1/8 as much. The food at Mr. Chow was not only the worst meal I've had in my five years living in LA, it's the worst meal I've had out in my life. Also I'm a physician and eat at several hospitals during the week, and I've never had as bad of food at a hospital as I have had at Mr. Chow. A lot of reviewers have compared it to Panda Express, but Panda Express in my opinion is so much better. My experience with the food was that it was tasteless, overcooked to the point of being mush, and made us feel sick after every bite. We started with the pictured chicken satay and squid ink rice noodles. The chicken satay was covered in a soft, thick and tasteless breading, and smeared with an equally tasteless sauce that was part butter part mayonnaise in consistency. Actually this dish looks much different than their photos online of this so called infamous house special. Maybe they only serve the real food to the rich and famous? The squid ink rice noodles were atrocious. You couldn't even find the noodles because they were completely over cooked, turning them to mush. And the taste made me and my friend sick to our stomachs, and we both love squid ink anything. If you can find a noodle shape in the photo attached you deserve a prize. The gamblers duck was laughable to us, because how do you mess up duck? The photo shows exactly how it was served to us before we "dug In." Not much on presentation that's for sure. I couldn't even eat the duck because it was so dry. Try wrapping it up in the pancakes they serve it with and you will choke. They also came with cucumber and scallions that looked a week old. When we told the waiter it was dry he said this is how it's suppose to be because it's fried. I've seen other reviews that complain about the dryness so when we ordered it why did he not say, this is not everyone's favorite because it's more dry for ones liking. Also I've never heard anyone say about a dish, mmm this is so dry, it's super good. We also had the drunken fish, not pictured. Overcooked mush again served in another slimy sauce. May as well have eaten baby food instead of this dish. Even the sides of mixed vegetables and shrimp fried rice were not good!! How can you get that wrong?? The rice looked gray in color and was again, tasteless. I had to mix it with the obviously store bought hot sauce of which they proudly served us at the start of the meal, to even try to fill up on something. No wonder they give you mediocre hot sauce to cover the nauseating food! The best part of this whole experience is that when we complained very nicely to the waiter and manager, he argued with us about every dish and then yelled take it all away to one of the other waiters. A happy ending to a sad story however is that they just charged us for our drinks and two starters, and all else was compensated for. Btw a Diet Coke will score you $6 on your bill, and the glass they fill it with isn't even a can's worth. Overall, stay away from Mr. Chow in LA! I was so scared for the next 24h I would get food poisoning since nothing seemed fresh or even edible. It is the worst food I've even eaten out and I won't even try the other locations in other cities even though some of my friends swear by them. Places I've been going to for decades: Lawry's Musso Dan Tanas Chin Chin Chinois Phillips Apple Pan and (maybe) a dozen more. Do I go to these places because the food is outstanding? No. Do I go there to walk down memory lane? Yes. And Mr. Chows fits firmly in this column. I've been coming here since 1975 and love the ambience, the familiar faces I always see and in Mr. Chows case, I'll include the food. Mr. Chows is not Chinese or Singaporean or actually any ethnic cuisine for that matter. For me, it's just good. My standard order (always) includes: Chow Special Noodles Gambe Sesame Prawn Toast Spouts Deep Fried Beef Drunken Fish Pesto Shrimp Chow Rice Like I said above, once a year for over forty years the same dinner, every time. I've heard of this restaurant for 50 years! I've been wanting to try it for awhile. Well I finally made it and what I have to say is that I should have tried it 50 years ago because that's where the clock stopped when it comes to this restaurant. The only thing going for it is the name which is iconic. But the restaurant is so dated, the food the presentation the restaurant in general. It truly was a disappointment. And a very expensive one at that. The servings were so small and the prices were so high. The flavor of the food was also very dated. There was nothing extraordinary or special about it at all. If anything I could see this food at a small mom and pop restaurant where they charge all you can eat for $4.99. On top of that they will only serve a minimum of $75 per person and you can see that in the font of about .4 in the bottom right corner of the menu. It truly was a disappointment. And the restaurant itself seemed old and moldy. I brought home my peking duck and gave it to my dogs and they didn't even like it. I'm not trying to be mean, I was just so so so disappointed after hearing about this Restaurant for so long and even though it only had three stars, which I can understand why it did, I just felt compelled to go because of its history. My fiancé has been making a 2021 bucket list. Things that are within reach for this year at least, whether that be try a new food or try a new activity that we normally don't do. Trying Mr. Chow's infamous Lychee Martini was on her list. One we have never had a Martini, and two the Lychee Martini has great reviews. We made a reservation on a Saturday with just the expectation of grabbing a drink and maybe desert. Just socially drinking on a Saturday night. Well apparently at Mr. Chow it is not allowed to order a drink if you are not going to eat. From what I understood from the employee is that nothing is a la carte, which is ok I wasn't really planning on eating anyways. We were then asked after placing a drink order, if we were going to eat. Which we said no , we just really came to try the martini. We were told that it wasn't allowed because they have such a high demand of reservations. I know, that's exactly why we made a reservation. Our intentions were to be there if anything max 30 minutes. After talking to the employee, we were given our drink. I decided not to order a drink at that point for myself because I did not want to spend another second there. I let my fiancé enjoy her Lychee Martini. As soon as our drink came out our check was on the table. Giving us the indication of "Ok drink your drink and get out." I've never been to a restaurant where we were told that we have to order food in order to get drinks. 10/10 for the martini and 0/10 for these rules and regulations. read more

I am looking forward to dining either outdoors on their patio sidewalk or indoors very soon; it's back on my rotational list as I've been dining at my other local favorites as well.. Yet, I must say their crispy Gamblers Duck was incredibly savory and fresh in quality (to be expected). I always crave their Glazed Prawns & Chicken Satay (they never ever disappoint)!
