I like this place on a rainy weeknight because it's too crowded with recent college grads on the weekends. The go-to neighborhood place for burgers and beer. Sadly they discontinued the bison burger so get ready for a fattier juicier burger. Always get the sweet potato fries, they're good. The beer selection is always decent. The wine is drinkable. Surprisingly it's their fancy soft drinks like Fentimans or Mexican Coke that are just great. Sometimes (no offense guys) the bartenders are a little spaced out and the kitchen is a little slow but guess what, it's a bar. Get into the relaxation zone and chill out. You're not here to be in a rush. Meet a friend here, have a couple beers, share a burger. Nice good relaxed pub atmosphere. Also, a TV for major sports events. Note: The business that was here before, Mighty Diamond, was AMAZING and everyone was so sad it closed. It was a VEGAN CARIBBEAN place with spicy and inventive food that was so tasty. I came here for brunch and ended up getting a cheeseburger special anyway. While the sweet potato fries are good, I think their burgers made my bf and I feel sick afterwards. I literally felt like I had a rock in my stomach and was in pain a few hours later after eating here. We didn't eat anything else before we got sick, so I'm guessing it had to be the burgers. Our server/ bartender also didn't know how to pour a Guinness properly which made me very sad. I live only a few minutes away from here, and was excited when I heard everyone ranting about this place. The prices are alright, and I will give this place another chance. I was really excited about this place especially because I had been hoping for this exact type of establishment would open in my neighborhood. The menu looked great and the prices looked even better. I walked in and sat down...I have to say, the drink prices were even higher than at Harefield Rd, which was quite a disappointment (though, my mulled wine WAS delicious). The interior is really cute and the staff was really nice. My veggie burger was a disappointment. I didn't go out to eat only to be served a boca burger. I can go home and have my condiments of choice and defrost my own boca burger. Id rather hop on the bus and go to Enid's down the street where they're still making a mean veggie burger from scratch (served with a side or 2!!) or hop on on the L train to Bedford and go to Mugs for their delicious home made Veggie Burger....Get a clue from bar and grills that have been around for years. This place has gone so far down hill. I waited 30 minutes at 11 pm for a cheese buger. I paid $3 for hand cut fries and got soogy skinny pre-fozen luke warm fries. $10 for buger and fries is cheaper than some but it shouldn't be awful. Bad soogy food. Ordered the bison burger. Bartender did not ask me how I wanted it cooked and I made the mistake of assuming a "burger joint" would cook it properly anyway. The bison burger was overcooked, there was not a trace of red or even pink in the meat. The burger was grey, stiff and literally crumbled when I cut into it. Pretty frustrating to have what otherwise would have been a bomb ass meal that you paid for, be ruined cause of a dumb careless mistake. Came in on Sunday for a burger. Sometimes a girl just needs a burger and all I wanted Sunday at noon was exactly that. I was shocked that the place was literally completely empty but I guess most people are more into places with a lot of brunchy options. No problem for me just means no waiting and a burger in my face a lot quicker. They offer this awesome special for lunch every day of the week - $10 for a burger (or veg burger), fries (reg or sweet potato) and a beer or soda. Pretty sweet right? We we were sold. Both had burgers - I had sweet potato fries, the BF had regular ones. I'd say it took about 10-15 minutes for the food to come out so I was one happy camper. I've been in my usual winter-induced coma for the last few months, which has kept me from experiencing much that my new Brooklyn nabe has to offer (and consequently, writing reviews on Yelp). But it's spring break, bitches, so I've been out and about this week! Wanted to leave a review of Mother's because I've been dying to try this place. I find the Graham Ave stop where I currently reside to be very lackluster in the food department, unless you're into having Carmine's for the eighth time this week, so I was excited to have a chill burger bar open up right down the street. I was even more excited when I walked in and saw that they were FIVE DOLLARS! Holla! I could get a cardboard footlong from Subway, or I could eat a greasy burger from Mother's for the same price. Sweet. I found it to be a pretty standard burger; meaning, not the best I've tasted, and certainly not the worst. The basket of fries was delicious and the bartender was prompt with the beer. Nothing truly remarkable about the place, but I'll settle for average in this case. And I'll be back often in the hopes that it gets even better. read more

I've been here every so often and I freakin love their Tilapia Sandwich. However, Mother's forte is their fries. Both the sweet potato and regular fries are amazing and you can not go here without getting some. Just a note on the Tilapia Sandwich--I find it kinda spicy and always ask for it without whatever sauce they use. Very cozy dive-bar. They have a backyard, but it's just an okay backyard. My only complaint is the beer selection seems to lean towards really hoppy or wheaty beers and I'm kinda more of a basic lager type of gal. This was part of a very family oriented night, as we followed it up with a trip to Daddy's. Cheap food, good beer selection, and I ate everything on my plate. I had the burger (I think with cheese? can't remember), fries, and some brewery's pilsner. i had no complaints about anything - like i said, i killed it all, and for the price it couldn't really be beat considering i was already 2 beers in, had 2 beers while eating, and went on to 2 margavezas at daddy's. the fries were by far my favorite just because i'm not so secretly addicted to french fries, and next time i'm there i'll definitely try the sweet potato fries as well. the environment itself is adorable - tin ceiling, dark wood, dark bar in general, the service was friendly and helpful (we could not for the life of us decide what kind of beer we wanted) and overall i'd go back, just like a custody battle. mother's fed me, daddy's just helped me get drunk. read more

I don't go to Mother's very often - when I checked in on a recent Sunday night I was surprised to hear that my last visit was in 2012 - but when I come it's for the comforting, simple burger. Mother's has a particular type of burger, one where the juices gush out of a pretty thin bun that hits the spot on a certain nights. On a block where some options are too fussy (Mesa Cocoyan) and others remnants from a grungier era (El Loco) Mother's pleasant atmosphere and decor strike me as just right. I came for what was just supposed a burger but turned into two glasses of rosé. It was the end of the long Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer. I like Mother's a lot. I go there quite a bit, and I'm consistently pleased if not overwhelmed with joy. The atmosphere doesn't try to be more than it should be, and I'm pretty excited about the garden when warm weather finally arrives. No, the burgers probably aren't the finest thing in the world, but I'm a Midwesterner on these issues, and just don't bother with real meat unless I'm closer to the native land (unless it's really incredibly special, like Dumont or Diner). That said, five dollars for a veggie burger is worth it, and the mayo is tasty. And the sweet potato fries are precisely what I wanted them to be- large enough pieces of potato that they actually have flavor. They're not to greasy, and the basket is big enough to be satisfying. And if you want to splurge and spend all of $7, the tilapia sandwich was excellent. The spiciness is perfection, the fish tastes fresh, and is not at all overcooked. The list of beers is good enough, although the lack of Brooklyn beers is a little odd. Mostly, the atmosphere is pleasantly unpretentious, not overwhelmingly crowded, and you can sit there for three hours without getting any dirty looks, which is rare. It's quiet, and with the cheapness, it's a great early evening spot on a weeknight, which is exactly what the neighborhood needed. I too was crushed when Mighty Diamond closed. I loved the food and the atmosphere, but Mother's is a good but totally different replacement. read more

I like it here. I can't express in words the relief I felt when this place opened up and WASN'T another weird massage place or the 15th new nail salon to spring up on the block. My veggie burger definitely didn't come out of a freezer, and it was definitely good. The sweet potato fries were awesome, the prices were decent, and the beer selection made me happy. Big ups for doing the basic shit RIGHT. I never expect food to be any good when the staff is totally man-orexic looking, so maybe part of my enthusiasm comes from surprise, either way, I hope this place sticks around longer than Mighty Diamond did... Went by this place for burgers and beer on Friday night. Mother's is great for what it is, a neighborhood beer and burgers spot. Unpretentious, pretty well-executed. Both my friend and I ordered Bison burgers which weren't AMAZING, but definitely hit the spot. The mayo is awesome-get it no doubt. I would say for the price, $5 (plus $2 for fries) stick w/ the hamburger over the bison burger ($7, although frankly a $5 burger probably is a bubba burger in a bun). Mothers is the best burger in the hood as far as I'm concerned. It is great for what it is - a neighborhood hang bar with good burgers and fries. The brunch is an awesome deal too - I think you get a free drink + meal for ~$10. The menu is small, but the food is decent with a touch of innovation. The owners and staff obviously take pride in their bar because I could easily see it slipping into dive status, but they keep it clean and cutely decorated, and the outdoor patio, while nothing fancy, gets the job done if you want to grab a cheap burger and beer after work. For the price it can't be beat. The staff is also very attentive - the last time I was there I was carrying food and drinks for 2 out to the patio and trying to open the door - which I could have done, but it may have been a disaster, and one of the bartenders came over and opened the door for me of his own accord. This place is decent. They have a pretty nice patio and very nice brunch prices. I really like the decor and the charmingly bewildered daytime bartender dude. I've had brunch here twice, (I ordered the omelette both times). The first time around, the food was great. A perfect greasy delicious hangover cure. The second time, my eggs were just plain overcooked and gross. My fries and corn muffin were consistently good both times in case you were wondering. If they served liquor I'd probably go ahead and award them four stars despite the crunchy egg incident. But they don't. So I can't. read more

Nice bar with a little (and I mean little) backyard area. You can fit 10 small tables out there I think, and we were lucky to get one. Not an extensive menu, they have burgers & fries, maybe a few other things that fit into "bar food" category. I got a veggie burger and it was delicious! My bf liked his bacon cheeseburger. The fries were thin and salty, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Apparently the bison burger is good too. Some nice beers on tap too. The waiter service was weird. You order at the bar, bring your beers out back and someone brings your food out, but you can't order another beer from your table? Fun place to stop for a beer and some food. Goodbye Mighty Diamond, Hello Mother's. I saw you repainting and renovating and then when I went away you all of a sudden opened. Convenient to the subway on a cold night, I enjoyed seeing you. I think you will succeed because you provide a decent burger (not necessarily the meat, but the great lettuce tomato red onion and dressing that puts it together) and your fries are good because they are shoestrings and reasonably priced. Any bar with some kind of food under 3 bucks gets compliments. You have been crowded since day one. Most of the reviews so far are much better than this one. I notice that most of them include food. Mine does not, as we were just getting drinks, so maybe that was the difference. I was with a group of maybe 6 people, and we were passing by and decided to stop off here for a drink, as no one in the party had ever been. They had an outdoor area, which was intriguing. I ordered a Coney Island Albino Python beer, which was good, and i will say it was nice that they had such a beer on tap. As for the outdoor area, what a bust. It's like 4 tables, a giant air conditioner, and a blue light. I don't know what it is with places in williamsburg thinking its awesome to put colored flood lights in their outdoor areas (see my review of elote for more graphic detail on this), but it really is not awesome. Regular lights are fine--preferable even. Another thing is that the outdoor table was really wobbly. If you are a bar offering outdoor seating, you should ensure that your tables are stable as, well a table. It was not fun having to hold my drink the whole time. Basically all these factors combined to create a vibe of just wanting to get out of there. No one wanted another drink, and no one even suggested sticking around. Don't get me competely wrong, the menu at least looks good and the food reviews on here seem to be pretty decent. But from a purely drink on an outdoor deck-based experience, this place gets pretty low marks. read more

I must first start in praise of the Tilapia sandwich. It was by far the best tilapia sandwich I have ever had, and one of the freshest tastiest fish sandwiches I have had in NYC in general. Super fresh off the grill, not frozen reheated, with nice seasoning and flavors all around. The sheer awesomeness of this sandwich was a wonderful surprise . I dont expect perfection at 2 AM at a bar I've never been to, but I got it in this sandwich. They had a good list of craft beers on tap, my IPA wasn't the freshest as can happen with beers at a place with maybe too many kegs going at the same time, but it wasn't the worst I've had. Nice cozy little place, definitely a tolerable vibe, has a sort of quaint feeling. I'd be interested in going again to scope out the beer scene here. They definitely put effort into the tap list. Great burger! Flame broiled, with lettuce tomato pickle onion for $9, side of regular or sweet potato fries $2, or a huge basket for $4. Their brunch special (burger, fries and half pint) for $10 can't be beat. Cute backyard. Small, very casual space. Not much to be said about service, since you order food at the bar, but they are prompt and professional.
