I had a cheeseburger here way before I was "doing" YELP, many / many years ago. I liked it then, and I liked it now; it still had that vibe, that brought me back. Mother's is such a vibe! You seat your self and order at the bar. And can I say sometimes I just love being left alone. I tried their classic burger and my partner got the Fish burger. The burger was really classic from the char to pickles and onions, BUT the meat was extremely under seasoned which made it was less enjoyable. I think I would come back if I was in the area and craving this type of food but I just wouldn't get a burger. We happened to come here by accident for lunch one day, and I had already paid for street parking when I pushed to give this place a try. I knew my boss ordered from here at least once a week, so I figured this place was worth a try. For first timers, as many other reviews state - you need to go up to the bar and order from their chalkboard menu that's posted on the wall behind the bar. I opted for their avocado BLT and my work mom wanted a burger in the worst way. The woman behind the bar couldn't be bothered. She wasn't friendly or personable; being clearly annoyed that I didn't understand the mechanics of this place. Yes, I served us water ourselves from the container in the back, and then sat down. The turnaround time from when I ordered to when we actually got the food, wasn't too bad honestly. I really loved my BLT and Janet loved her burger. The fries are addicting, so if you come here for anything, come for the food. They were playing old Baywatch episodes on the TV mounted on the wall, so it was perfect for the start of summer. When we finished, we went back up to the bar and paid. When the waitress gave me the check, it was in a beer puddle, so I had to sign well below the dotted line. Maybe keep the bar dry? Ok, this mainly about their hamburgers which I usually get takeout. I think this is one of the best straight up, classic hamburgers in NYC. The patty has a propper grind, and feels, tastes and looks pure, without fillers. It is grilled and thick enough to be made medium rare and still have a nice char on the outside + simple ingredients: lettuce, tomato, raw onion and a pickle slice = Excellent hamburger. This is where you start if you want to taste a classic NY burger before you decide to add bacon, special sauce, mushrooms, even cheese. The shoestring fries are pretty good and so are the tater tots. Their buffalo wings are also great and the blue cheese sauce that comes with it is to die for, I get it for my fries even when I don't order wings. read more

Dropped in here to meet friends before a nearby concert for food and drinks. Had wanted to try it for a while, as it felt and sounded like the kind of old school, no-frills, divey place I tend to love, But for whatever reason I just didn't love the vibe of it or particularly enjoy my food and drink. I had the Mom's Meatloaf Sandwich, which I thought was kinda small for $16 and fairly bland, topped with an odd chipotle mayo that didn't go with it for me. My girlfriend made a surprise move and got the Cauliflower Wings, a kind of vegetarian take on a buffalo wing, which were fairly tasty, if a bit one note--the blue cheese crumbles were a welcome touch, but I really wish they just went all in and had a blue cheese dip for them rather than the disappointing ranch choice.  Tater tots were excellent, as one would hope and expect. Beer list was struck me as fine if uninspired--a lot of pseudo-craft or super popular mass-market "craft" offerings (e.g., Bluepoint, Goose Island, Kona, Blue Moon, Bells Two Hearted) but nothing particularly unique or different or local, which felt like a bit of a miss given the location and plethora of options. It's a fine place, relatively spacious, and nice and dark, as a bar should be. Nothing super wrong with it at all, wouldn't hate to come back but nor would I rush back here. I recently came to this restaurant with my girlfriend to have a few drinks and eat some dinner. We came around 7 pm on a Friday night, and it was a little busy, but we still got a table quickly. This establishment, you have to order your food and drinks at the bar, and they will deliver it to your table when ready. We started off with a few beers. Their selection was okay. I like to try craft IPA Beers when I'm out, and the beers here tasted good. After a few drinks, we ordered a cheeseburger and meat loaf sandwich and split them between us. The burger was average. I enjoyed the tater tots as my side. Nice and crunchy. The special sauce that came with the burger was pretty good, but the actual burger itself was just okay. Same goes for the meat loaf sandwich. Mother's is always a solid choice. Everything is cooked on a grill and you can tell because the taste is very "outdoor cookout" which I love. It's a flavor profile you don't get from many places. Solid burgers and hot dogs. The chicken Caesar wrap is probably one of the best I've ever had too. The buffalo wings are meaty but I do wish there was a bit more sauce. There is no table service which is fine. You order at the bar, close out if you'd like, they drop it off to you, and you can leave whenever you want without waiting for a check to come. Perfect neighborhood bar with outstanding burgers. Came here for lunch and it's such a vibe - great beers on tap, friendly bartender, and basically run of the joint. The service here really is stupendous. After ordering, we talked for at least 30 minutes about our preferred toppings for burgers and after saying I liked mustard with horseradish, the bartender gave me a packet of his private stash of wasabi paste. Not to mention, could taste any beer before I committed which was nice. I got the veggie burger with cheese and it was really amazing. The special sauce was SO delicious and I was glad they give a big dollop of it. The burgers really are spectacular here and I would come back for burgers and beers any time. I don't know what you know about burgers, but I like to think I know a bit about burgers. Someone said to me "If you're in the mood for a burger, you should go to this burger place I know." So I was all like, "I'm usually in the mood for a burger. Let's do this!" Upon walking in, I realized that I'd been here before. Sadly I couldn't remember anything about my previous visit except for where I sat, so I figured it must have been ok, right? Well, ok is basically as far as I'm going to go with this review. First thing to note: There's no table service, so make sure to stop by the bar and order. Fill up a cup of water on your way to the table too, because you are now your own waiter! So far so good. If you need to use the bathroom by this point, or any point really, note that it is pretty tiny. This isn't a problem really. The problem is actually the smell. As a preschool teacher, I have smelled some nasty and rancid things. This my friend, is not a bodily function smell issue. This bathroom smells and looks as clean as a port-a-potty that has been used by many people in the rain after a carnival. Go ahead. You can imagine it. Not the ideal situation for someone who is about to eat. Let's move on for a minute and talk about the food. We got 1 burger with blue cheese and 1 with bacon, cheese and a gluten free bun. Clearly, you know which one I ordered. The bartender asked how we wanted the burgers cooked (med rare). We also got a basket of parmesan fries, because a side order is not enough for my appetite. Not even close. The good news is that the food came out really quickly! The other good news is that the fries were exactly what I was in the mood for. Suuuuuuuuper covered in cheese, hot and crispy. Honestly, all 3 of those stars are just for the fries. I like fries. How were the burgers? We're going back to that word I used before. The burgers were ok. The highlights? My gluten free bun wasn't disgusting, the pickles were crunchy and I would not have minded dipping my whole fist into that sauce. The burger itself was lacking. Staff is very friendly, especially the bartender. I ordered a Pan Fried Tilapia Sandwich with a side of tater tots for a $1 up charge. To be fair, I'm not the biggest tilapia fan but the sandwich, especially the potato bun and condiments, was enjoyable. The sandwich included a large piece(s) of tilapia. I just came back from Manhattan for unpresented court case, my partner and I weren't in a good mood and we decided to have a first meal a lunch here. This place is so easy and casual, just find any place you want to sit, read the menu and go order at the bar then wait for food to come. We had Hamburger lunch, came with choice of side dish and drink. I chose mix green and my partner had sweet potato fries and we both had coffee. Food came quick and tasted good. Two words... TATER TOTS! Ever since Jimmy's closed, I have been craving a place where they have tater tots and Mother's is it. I like the fact that a vegetarian (me) and a carnivore (my friend) can eat at the same place and neither of us feel like we are losing out. I had the Veggie Avocado BLT and it was delish. The Tempeh bacon was nice and smoky and the chipotle aioli was great. I just wish there was more lettuce and tomato on it... it is a BLT after all, but there was a nice amount of bacon and avocado to make up for it. My friend's grilled chicken sandwich was so big it didn't fit on the bun. He said it was great with the added toppings of caramelized onions and cheddar. I was taking the husband to see San Fermin at Brooklyn Steel and wanted a good and relaxing meal beforehand. Almosttly across the street from the Graham Street L train stop we found Mother's right away. We chose a seat close to the window and checked out the 16 different draft varieties that were on tap. I ordered Black Velvet, a mix of cider and Stout, the husband had a Montauk Driftwood Ale. We later switched to Narragansett since they were $4 each. I had the Avocado BLT $10, holy amounts of bacon! Too much overcooked bacon for me and I ended up not eating about half of it. The husband had a Turkey Burger $9 and enjoyed it. Mother's was the perfect spot for our pre show meal. It was cozy, relaxing, and all around comfortable. I felt right at home here and would definitely come back and enjoy the back garden area on a nice day. read more

Guys, I write this review pretty heartbroken. As you can see from my 2012 review, I was once a huge fan of Mother's. It was once one of the most consistent burger and fry providers in my immediate area. I honestly don't know what has happened over the years. It just slowly lost all of its swag. The large, puffy, seeded bun disappeared and was replaced with a regular potato bun. The honey mustard went from a light, subtle mixture to a dark, golden, black-flecked situation. Then there was that period where they mysteriously went 'cash only' for a spell. Yet I stayed loyal in hopes that it was all a fluke and they'd regain their composure. Lo and behold, I recently discovered that Mother's FINALLY delivers via Seamless. Which is a big deal. I live a 5-minute walk from the establishment. However, my wife and I have a daughter now. At the time of this review, almost 10 weeks old. She's a bundle of joy. But, for obvious reasons, it's hard to leave the house sometimes. So the fact that Mother's can bring the goods to my door sounded like the best thing ever. So that's what we did tonight. And I wish we hadn't. Nevermind that it took almost 90 mins to get here (when I usually could get it in 25 mins at the most in the pickup days). What absolutely killed me is the pitiful amount of fries I was given. It look like two small handfuls (see photo). Mother's used to pack your little white cardboard box BRIMMING with fries. And so tasty too. Tonight I was given the equivalent of a brittle nest of leather shoestrings. I wish I didn't have to write this. Well I guess I didn't have to. But dude... it's already sad enough that some of my favorite eateries are disappearing altogether constantly. But when one of my favorite places that probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon just throws in the towel on a staple dish, it's hard not to vent. read more

Mother's is probably a new favorite casual stop of mine, since it's so close to where I live & the premise behind the menu & ambiance is really basic. No frills, just a good bar food menu & your standard beer list. I had a beer with a friend during dinnertime on Saturday night, & there was nothing to really complain about. The crowd was fairly young, the bartender polite enough, & the food was exactly what I was expecting. I got the - veggie burger, tasted like a soy patty, with pepper jack - basket of fries, which was surprisingly addicting, and my friend ordered the - hamburger with bacon & cheddar. This place is getting 5 stars strictly for the amazing burger I had. I tried the Bison Meat Burger with Cheddar/L&T. Delicious!!!! The perfect consistency and flavor. I loved the soft sesame bun too, yum! They have some great beers on tap. I had a few "A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale" by Lagunitas Brewing Company. Really great, highly recommend.
