Although it took awhile for my moped to get fixed, mainly due to the fact that I'm on another island, Joe did send up one of his BEST guys to Kauai to service my bike. Now my bike is running better than it did when it was brand new. Here's some tips when purchasing from this company. These guys are really busy, so paitence is key and it will pay off. My moped was out of comission almost a year. It probably would have been fixed a lot sooner if I was on the same island but I'm not. Even though my moped was out of warranty, Joe still honored my 1 year manufacture warranty for my moped because he remembered I did make a claim when it first stopped working. All I got to say is if you're paitent and understanding with them, they'll go the extra mile to make you happy. Second tip, if you're on another island, purchase a bike that you know you can get parts for from your local bike shop. Unfortunately, the moped I purchased was the GTR 50, mainly because of the looks. Parts are hard to come by and no one here knows how to fix it. I knew that ahead of time and still bought the bike. Third, before you call these guys make sure it's not something stupid like trying to start your bike up on an empty tank or having your kill switch engaged. Simple things like that will save you a lot of time and money. Thanks again Joe, I went from super bummed to super STOKED. I'm in love with my bike again. Not sure why the negative reviews? My girlfriend bought a moped about a year ago from Joe. No major problems. A few small things needing adjustment or fixed, but took back to the shop and they corrected usually within a few minutes on the spot and extra points for the staff not seeming inconvenienced. I cannot stress enough what a great shop this is. I am a UH student and found Mopeds Direct after encountering poor service and poor quality mopeds from other shops in the area. After noticing the GTX moped on every street, every bike rack and every parking lot it became obvious to me that there is a reason for this. I have never had any major issues with my moped and the guys at the shop are always willing and helpful whenever my moped needs a carburator adjustment, brake adjustment, a blinker bulb or whatever little thing it may need. The other shop I used to go to always charged me for everything for the piece of junk 4 stroke moped I purchased from them that broke down every other week I highly recommend this shop to everybody; and anybody that has been there sees how busy they are and how they treat their customers. I am graduating from UH this semester and Mopeds Direct should be used as a business model on how to operate a business. When you see a line of people waiting to buy a moped it makes you wonder why; what is so great about this place. These guys are great ; I have nothing but good things to say about them. They will go the extra mile for you, not charge you an arm and a leg for it and work hard to make sure everything is up to par. After reading some of these slanted reviews, I thought I might provide some objective feedback from someone who has owned not one, but two mopeds purchased from Joe at Mopeds Direct. Let me say this is a class act operation. The first moped I bought was fun and functional. Any time I had a problem, Joe was able to fix it, and even provided a loaner while his mechanics worked on the bike. Unfortunately, it was stolen and found by HPD nearly a year later in Kalihi. Joe graciously accepted it as a trade-in on a second moped, even though it had accumulated more than 5,000 additional miles on it. The new one lasted me several years until I sold it to a co-worker. I own a car now, but am considering going back to a two-wheeler because of the high cost of maintenance. You can be sure Joe at Mopeds Direct will be my first stop. read more

Negative reviews? No way Jose, Definitely gonna be POSITIVE REVIEWS right now. Three years ago, I remembered not having a car at all and had to walk on Kapahulu from Waikiki to Waialae St every day from Monday to Friday. I always passed by this shop and I began to wonder what they got. There was this owner Joe and I told him I would like to purchase one of the mopeds. He gave me one and I learned important information from him about moped. I STILL have my baby (my moped) since March 2011. I came by the shop maybe 4 or 5 times and when Joe is very busy, he got a great and loyal team to cover for him to help me. Jeremy is awesome, thank you for everything and your help to make sure my baby is in a great hand! Thank you Joe for introducing me to my baby :) Anyone who shared negative reviews, they are probably not taking good care of their moped properly or following any instructions. I have been very pleased with my moped from Joe that I purchased in August 2011. It's cute, fast, and came with a nice warranty. I've also met JP in their associated shop on University Ave when we were checking out used mopeds for my friend and he's a great dude too and very knowledgable. I felt completely valued as a customer and even recommended Mopeds Direct to my roommate and she ended up with a sweet ride of her own. Joe is sometimes hard to track down, but the other people in the shop are helpful too. I don't know why some people complain about what the shop looks like.. they're assembling and upgrading your machine right there in about 3 square feet and real estate is pricey in Honolulu, give them a break. I WOULD GIVE THIS NEGATIVE STARS IF POSSIBLE. THEIR MOPED ALMOST KILLED ME. Seven days ago, I decided to buy a moped. So, I called, they said they had the moped in stock, I was excited, so I went in to buy it. When I got there, they told me that I needed the moped I wanted was in a box "all the way in the back." They were super lazy and wouldn't get it. Told me it may be available in the next week. Their appearance should have tipped me off. Extremely dirty, extremely unprofessional. I understand that they're mechanics, but the shop was just super super super dirty and just full of moped boxes. Also, the OWNER of the shop kept telling me that he was over the moped business and wanted to move on to "bigger and better things." It's clear to me that they don't care about their customers or their well being, because they don't even sell helmets. I had to go to another moped shop to buy a helmet. A few days later, I called see if it was available. They said yes, come by in an hour it will be ready. This worried me. They assemble and test a moped in an hour?! I told them to take their time. So, I bought my moped for $1,095. Awesome deal. Played around on it for a few days. FOUR DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT THE THING (today), I was on my way to work. The throttle stopped working. I was almost on Kapiolani (major, busy, busy road). Turned the moped off and on. IT TRIED TO TAKE OFF ON ITS OWN WITHOUT ANY GAS. Thankfully a couple of nice gentlemen with a truck took me and the moped back to where I got the bike. This is where I just can't believe my own ears. They tell me they can fix it or give me a new moped, but if I want to return it, I'll lose $300. LOSE $300 on a brand new bike they sold me that almost killed me?!?!?!! Why would I want the same bike!?!??! And why would I want a new bike that THEY assemble?!!? Side Note: This is word of mouth, but today I heard that a girl bought the same bike from them a few weeks ago. Throttle gave out on her, she jumped off right before it got hit by a car. Also, heard from two other moped shops that they have had problems in the past. I'm glad to be alive today, no thanks to Mopeds Direct on Kapahulu. **Joe, that's totally understandable that you didn't have time to get the moped I wanted that day. My mistake, just upset. My problem is with the refund policy. If you refunded the money, I'd have a different review of how you treated your customers (note that Toyota recalled their vehicles due to their error). However, you have yet to return my calls, you just defend yourself on Yelp. Please call me asap to resolve. Thanks! **Update 8/6/12: I see that Joe has updated his response. Yes, I did get a refund. After making this Yelp review, which he was very, very rude to me in. The only reason that I got the refund is 1) I went in with a guy friend so that he could witness the way I was being treated. Joe told me repeatedly that I was "too young, "ignorant" and "incompetent" and that whatever happened to the moped was my fault. and 2) He said he wanted to see for himself. He turned the moped on and it tried to drive off without him. He was very shocked. He said "oh, you're right." And THEN and only THEN did he give me my refund. Even while he was refunding me, he was talking down to me. I would NEVER EVER EVER buy a moped from this guy. Refund or not. He's extremely rude and unprofessional. read more

This place is horrible. First off, our group made reservations for the morning...On our way to pick up or rental mopeds, I get a call, saying we need to come in 2 hours later, because our mopeds are not ready yet...Totally messes up our schedule. The owner, who is fat and has a huge mullet, was rude and impatient with our group...I decided it wasnt worth wasting my time with a rude person, so I cancelled and he gave me a full refund back. Plus,.the mopeds he was trying to rent to us looked like something from 1988, super old and in bad shape I took my business elsewhere, and paid only 10 dollars more at Adventure Moped Rental in Waikiki, and received great service and brand new mopeds DONT GO HERE!! read more

I bought a moped six months ago and every other month there is something wrong. I need this as main transportation to work and Ive had roommates and neighbors have to give me rides cuz the moped wont start. The owner is nice, always willing to help, but he's always extremely busy. More then anything, its just a huge inconvenience. Update: To ask for last four digits of vin as proof that I am not a competitor is like a restaurant asking for a receipt number as proof of purchase of a meal... It ridiculous! Hasn't been a year yet... Lights went out...Drove by and He waved it off saying I just had to drive the moped some more to charge its battery. Two days later all lights shut off and I got pulled over. Quality of the moped is cheap. My seat fell apart within the 2 years that I owned it. Starting rusting out pretty bad too. The plastic on the lights and dashboard turned yellow and hazy even after I tried cleaning them up with different products. Do some moped research, as simple as observing the mopeds on the streets, certain brands of moped consistently show their ware the same way. read more

I took my moped to Mopeds Direct and to get fixed, and spent $230 to fix the engine. Keep in Mind that my moped brand new costs about $800. They promised me that if anything broke within a month, they would fix it for free. Two weeks later, I am riding the moped back from the beach and it breaks down. I walk it to Mopeds Direct, and they refuse to fix the moped. They say it is not their responsibility, and was poor maintenance on my part. Now I lost $230 for two weeks of moped riding, and am left with a broken piece of crap that they refuse to fix. I do not support this company, and would only use their service after several other quotes. Check out Mopeds Plus on McCully for more honest workers and better service. read more

5 stars I wish if an give more! Folks there at Mopeds Direct nothing but kind people. I walked in the shop looking for a moped. Jeremy approached me and asked me a few questions like "how far and how long will u b riding for". I will b riding from Kaimuki to Moanalua. And he was like "that's a long ride for moped and the Tao Tao would get u there but it will die out faster". He recommend the GTX for the long hall. Kinda strapped for cash was really not tryin to drop $1200 for a new one. But he was like hold up let me get Joe the owner. There is was a moped outside, customer had to move off island and sold it back to us. Myb Joe can work something out for u..... Joe comes out from the back shakes my hand and gave me the bike for really great price. Couldn't say no and plus it was a GTX heard many great things. So I bought the bike. But I needed a chain. He said we get but its at the bottom of all their boxes out front. Come back in 2 hours. I'll c that u get a chain. Came back and he had a chain waiting for me. All in all the folks here at Moped Direct know wat they're doing. Being open and standing strong for 20+ years. Would recommend it to anybody looking for a bike. This place with Joe and Jeremy and the crew makes it a one stop shop for ur moped needs!!! read more

I've had my moped for about three years now, and over the years, as I go in for checkups and fixes, it has always exceeded my expectations. I visited several moped shops, and I chose Mopeds Direct because not only were they friendly, they also explained to me how the machine worked, how to take care of it, how to ride it, and made me feel very comfortable. The staff is helpful and friendly, and I feel that Joe runs this place with so much integrity. I bought a Venus Retro moped from Joe about two years ago and I havent had any problems so far. The only thing that needed fixing was a recent flat tire and possibly the brakes. Which of course comes from extended use. The moped does smoke a little when you start it up, but thats to be expected from any moped (unfortunately). As for the service, the main shop does get busy and from what I know doesnt handle repairs, but their second shop (off of University Ave) is AWESOME. I would suggest bringing your moped in early (they open at 10am) if possible so they have ample time to work on it. The guys are very friendly and will answer any questions you have. The pricing is fair and lets face it, it's better to have a safe and working moped for a moderate price than an unsafe moped for cheap. ;) Overall, I'm glad that I chose to buy my moped from Moped's Direct. Great Experience! I stopped by the shop last Saturday with some question on aftermarket parts / upgrades. Eric was super friendly and very helpful, with tons information on any questions I could come up with. I'm still new to the moped scene, but Eric took the time to explain different options of what I was looking for with performance / reliability and really made me feel comfortable. So my Rexy moped was having trouble starting. I called and they seemed very helpful BUT boy was I wrong!! They came to pick it up and took it to one of their shops and said they would take a look at it and call me the next day to let me know what was wrong but it would be fixed by Saturday at the latest, this was on a Wednesday. Over the next two days I could not get a hold of anyone who knew what was wrong let alone which shop my moped was even at!! When I finally found where it was they said it needed a tune up and maybe a battery. I was trying to be nice and said I would not be able to pick it up until Monday so take your time. Cut to Monday morning I call and they AGAIN have no idea which shop they moved it to!! Finally find it and guess what...they haven't even started to look at it!! All in all it took them a week to "fix" my moped. All of this would be forgiven except that its now two days later and my moped wont start again!!! DO NOT GET YOUR MOPED FIXED HERE!!!!!! read more

Wanted to invest in a new moped since I go to college and work part time; just so I could make things easier on myself since I work late hours or right after class and don't have time for the bus. Keep in mind I was a little hesitant going around asking moped places for prices because I was by myself. I'm a relatively small/young girl who has no background in any sort of mechanics and have never made a big purchase like this without the help of my parents before. I went to EVERY SINGLE moped shop in town and I felt alright about them, but not completely sold. Walked into Mopeds Direct and Joe immediately gave me honest and straightforward answers to my basic questions. He didn't beat around the bush and was able to make me feel valued as a customer in a genuine and friendly way. I had NO reason to feel as if I was being taken advantage of, unlike the other shops I had talked to. I talked story for awhile with him while he took care of my registration and safety check. Two other people walked in while I was waiting, but he multitasked and got them taken care of as well. It was obvious that he really builds a relationship with his customers as he was able to ask them questions both about their mopeds condition and personal life. Great first time moped buying experience! Don't let the look of the place discourage you from buying. The back is literally their shop. Don't buy into the mirage of other places. This place is insane. Not only were they straight forward about the differences between the cost/benefits of their mopeds, but they went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable on my ride before I left the shop. Then I went back for my tune up and they remembered my name, my moped and gave me advice for how to get the most out of the bike. These guys are the real deal. They build a relationship with their customers and do whatever it takes to make sure their customers are satisfied. A few months after I bought my moped my roommate (who did not buy from them) broke down on her bike. They came and picked her moped up for $15 bucks and fixed it like she was an original customer. Just had an awesome experience at Mopeds Direct! Jeremy was super awesome and helpful... he has really good energy, and all of his interactions I observed between him and other people were very pleasant. He genuinely seems to love what he does. I've never ridden a moped before and he even took time to teach me everything I needed to know... he was super patient and made sure I was comfortable on the moped before I rode it, and then he went around the block with me :) I rode my bike to the shop to buy the moped, and Jeremy offered to deliver the bike to my house free of charge so I wouldn't have to come back for it, which was a huge time saver for me!!! I bought my first moped from these guys about 2 and a half years ago and it was great. I talked with Joe for a while before I bought my moped since it was my very first one and I had no idea what I was doing. He was super helpful and even ended up giving me a little bit of a discount. A year ago, the battery was stolen out of my moped so I took it in to JP at the repair shop on University. He managed to get me in to install a new battery the same day I called which was awesome. My moped was my only form of transportation and I couldn't go any longer without it! He was so great and so helpful and didn't even charge me for labor, just for parts. Then, this past weekend my moped was stolen right from my apartment building. That was the worst feeling ever, but I called up Mopeds Direct to get my hands on a new one. They just got a new shipment in and sold me a brand new moped the same day I called! Joe wasn't there when I went in and bought it, but I went back in the next day to take care of my registration paperwork (shipment day was too crazy to get it done immediately) and Joe ended up honoring the discount he gave me over two years ago! Overall, this shop is full of wonderful and helpful guys that sell great mopeds! They're quick to help out with whatever issues you have and have great customer service. I got to Mopeds Direct after I'd already been to 4 other shops in and around Waikiki. Joe, the owner, greeted me as soon as I walked in, and starting asking me about my decision to get a moped, and what my plans to do with it were. Already, I knew that I liked this place because where the other shops immediately started telling me what I needed, Joe asked me about what I wanted to do with it. He then recommended the GTX. This is a bike that Joe has actually created himself into a fantastic bike that has the best reputation on the island. I found this out because ever since I bought it 5 days ago people have been telling me nonstop how lucky I am to have one and how fast and reliable it is. I can't write this review without mentioning Jeremy, Joe's right hand man. The dude is the coolest, and he's straight up with you about their product, and has tons of priceless advice for a new Hawaii moped rider. Another thing I'd like to say is that Mopeds Direct is not like the other shops where they hype up their stuff saying that they're the best. I found that out from everyone else on the island. Unfortunately, I've had a problem with my bike already(it had nothing to do with the shop) I asked my sister to watch the GTX while I went in a store, and when I came out I found out she broke the kickstand. She sat on it with all her weight, which i thought was just common sense not to do, but anyway she broke the weld on it. So we rode straight to the shop and Joe said he could fix it no problem! I'm certain that won't be the last thing that happens to my bike because like Joe said, "even the best mopeds have problems over time"(thats why the bikes come with a sweet warranty). All I can say is that I love my bike and I couldn't have gotten it from a better place. The guys at Mopeds Direct are great. I bought a moped from Mopeds Plus and they never wanted to honor their warranty with me. They were rude and unhelpful, and made it seem as if it were an inconvenience to help me with issues that their terrible product had caused! Hello! This is your business, this is what you are supposed to do! Anyway, the guy at Mopeds Direct helped me for free with the issues I was having with my moped everytime for free because of all the trouble that I had whenever I went to Mopeds Plus. Mopeds Plus even wanted me to pay for items that were under warranty or should have been covered under warranty. I highly recommend Mopeds Direct. Everything that they say on their website is true because they back it up. They go above and beyond what any other moped shop would go because they even came to my place to fix problems I ad with my moped! Talk about high-quality service! There is no wonder why in my mind that they have been in business for so long. They have a high knowledge for their industry, the best service in all of the islands, and they treat their customers with respect as if they were ohana!
