Fake meat lovers (and meat lovers) rejoice! Very solid place for fast and reasonably priced Vietnamese food. Even though parking can be an issue in the ID, Moonlight Cafe has its own dedicated parking lot, which de-stresses the whole going-out-to-eat-and-park issue. Service is pretty fast and it's easy to see why this place is so popular: the food rocks and there are a variety of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians... orrrr just meat eaters attempting to be healthy, which is me on most days since I am really too lazy to exercise. Anyhoo, I recommend all the meat products (of which I've tried and loved many), but also the udon soup with tofu and fake meat. Normally, I fear soups as the broths can be quite bland or overly salty, but this broth, I'm into. Also, I never leave hungry, as their fake meat is pretty legit and given out in ample portions (as fake meat goes... fake-meat lovers know what I'm talking about!) Finally, I love that this place is clearly an old Denny's. There are various booths and seating options (slightly elevated or not) for your nostalgic pleasure. So I'm Viet and I grew up in SoCal and spent most of my weekends in Santa Ana/Westminster "Little Saigon" area. I'm VERY picky about my Viet food. This is one of the few places I'll go in Seattle to get my Viet fix. Sure, it's not the best I've ever had, but it certainly is close and the best I've had in Seattle. I even like it enough that I wasn't embarrassed to take my parents here for dinner when they came to visit. In fact, they both were impressed and liked the food here. It's also great because I have some friends who are vegetarians and also have very severe food allergies. It's one of the few places we can go where everyone agrees on as it accommodates everyone. My favorite dish? Spicy Beef Noodle (Bun Bo Hue). The boyfriend swears by the Seafood Hot Pot though. He's convinced that it regenerates when you close the lid as it seems to be never-ending. So I like the vegan vegetarian food go there often food all is good feeds our family of 4 for less than 40 bucks. My four star isnt for the food and the owner is good and most staff are too. Last time I had to correct the waitress with the glasses because on two occasions she has told my wife and kids where they cant sit, based on she thinks we are doing take out every time. Also she mispoke and asked a question a waitress should never ask when we ordered another side of rice. She asked us two parents two little kids if we had money? I had to correct her and tell her this is the 2nd time she has done this about where to sit and asking us if we have money after I spent on three or 4 dishes wont happen again. One waitress isnt messing up my day and the young gentlemen at the counter was there when I told her and gave the rice free and apologized and so did she. I write this because I have seen other Patrons yell at her and one white chick asked if she spoke English which is rude and not neccessary. This is a good spot wait on food good and healthier option. I'm writing a review because I'm very disappointed in the customer service. I had asked for a replacement of the Vietnamese coffee (cà phê sua đá) after taking one sip of it. I immediately choked on the coffee grind that was left inside my drink. THE female waitress/cashier denied to redo my drink and said," let the drink settle and all the grounds will go to the bottom." This is a great place for vegetarians with meat-eater friends - two menus, everyone can get something they like. And both menus are huge - there is almost too much to choose from!! Our meat-eater friends love it too. For vegetarians - definitely get the sesame "beef." It is the best thing I've had there so far and makes great leftovers. We also got the cashew "chicken" which was just okay. The "chicken" was cubed and tasted vaguely like sausage. It was still very tasty, just not in a chicken way. My friend insisted we come here... but I dont see why because not only was it farther away from the international district the food was not all that. The only good thing about this place was that it had free parking.... This is a mock meat extravaganza. Two sepperate menus, one veg one meat, and thats pretty cool. The mongolian beef is pretty good, and i've had the lobster tail too. Again, not a huge fake meat eater so this isnt really the place for me. I did learn here that my friend joe puts soy sauce in his tea. Bad news first: We were seated in what we will now call "The Forgotten Table". You'll know it when you see it. It is a table separate from all the others where servers don't notice you. We waited about 15 minutes before our order was taken. We got our appetizers, but were not given utensils, napkins, or water. After a few minutes, my husband went to the counter to ask for them. Utensils and napkins were delivered. No water. Our entrees came, but we had no plates for them, no rice, and still no water. My husband went and asked for them, and then the plates and rice were delivered. Still no water. We gave up. The water would never come. GOOD NEWS: The food is excellent. We were feeling bitter about the service, so it felt odd to love the food so much. The tofu salad rolls were a delicious appetizer, and the Stir Fried Gluten with Pineapple and Mushroom was amazing. I've of course been here multiple times since. Their food is consistent as their service is not. The last time I visited I was pleasantly surprised to receive un-surly service. I've enjoyed most dishes I've had there and not limited to. The veggie special fried rice, (real) chicken fries rice, eggplant hot pot, Singapore noodles, Mongolian (fake) beef. We live very close and have been here so many times! Didn't realize I hadn't reviewed it. Such goodness for the vegetarian and the nonvegetarian alike! My hard to please picky vegetarian dad also likes this place! We have tried many things on the menu and enjoyed everything from soups to stirfries to noodles. Their tofu with mushroom in the coconut sauce is delicious. I love the faux lemongrass chicken even more than the real chicken! They are always friendly and quick, and the prices are wonderful. I used to live across the street from this place, so I've eaten there many, many times. Everything I've had there is totally solid. It's a little lacking in atmosphere so I always preferred take-out. Their menu is a little confusing because they have a vegetarian menu and a meat menu, so you have to specify which one you're ordering from. I loooooove this place. They have a vegetarian menu and a meaty menu with just about all the same dishes. Buddhist monks visiting from around the world come eat here. if you can convince them to make avocado shakes for you, do it. the shakes are the highlight of my visit here. usually the guys won't make them and the girls will. one of the guys just laughs in my face when I order an avocado shake and I get angry and huge and green but then I let that anger subside because of my longstanding love and history with the restaurant itself. can't go around smashing everything up... my favorite dish is the vegetarian special vermicelli noodle bowl. appetizer to die for is the veggie pork skewers (how are they soooo good)? service, meh. another one of those speak up or forever hold your peace style service joints, so I've just learned to speak up. other places usually remember that you're a regular and do things like remember your name/your order/your ridiculously consistent, generous tip despite the service... but this place not so much. At least they don't make any reference of appreciation. so I dock a star for that, and reduce my tip over the years from 25% to 20% to 15% (which is less than anywhere else I go to). On the outside, Moonlight Cafe looks like a faded run-down nightclub and karaoke bar wanna-be place. My guess is that this was the very original intent of the owners. But look inside and the "stage" has been converted to a "living room set." I guess that makes it more useful! Anyway, I thought this place was pretty good at best, but I know some people who swear by this place and have become addicted. The location is kind of creepy but yes, they give gigantic portions! Oh, and they have faux tuna. What is tuna doing at a Vietnamese place?! I heard that it and all the other fake meats they have taste and look pretty real (the tuna even has fake tuna skin on it, yuck), but I'm not gonna lie: I don't like tuna that much to begin with, so you won't see me trying it anytime soon, know what I'm saying. read more

Moonlight Cafe is a little out of the way from the rest of Seattle "Chinatown" but it is well worth the journey up Jackson. Both the food and the service are very good, and the Vietnamese dishes here are on par with very best of Seattle's Vietnamese restaurants. Don't get me started on the fake meat. Came here for lunch with some friends and had the lotus root salad...it was a light and refreshing mix of red cabbage, carrots, sprouts, lotus root and tofu in a sesame and rice vinegar dressing. Perfect for a hot summer day. They definitely hold their own when given they are across the street from the Franz bakery which taunts and tempts with it's fresh bread aromas....the food was good enough to have me stay put...nuff said. read more

Moonlight has been around forever. I can still remember my parents taking me here when I was a little girl. The atmosphere has changed a lot. Not that it's a bad thing. Just like they say, don't judge a book by it's cover. Well don't judge this place from the outlook of it. I love how they offer a vegetarian menu and a regular menu. Sometimes I am in the mood for veggies and tofu. I would recommend the fried fish, from the vegetarian menu, with a side of rice. It's very delightful and it sure fooled me. It taste so good, I didn't realize there wasn't any meat on the dish. I also like their rice and egg noodle soup, preferably from the vegetarian menu. I don't have a clue what goes on behind the scenes here at the Moonlight, but my number one gripe is Service. Or, the complete lack thereof. You walk in, and if you are lucky, some notices you. Otherwise you are ignored. If noticed, you are, with the wave of a hand, dismissed to a table. Also--don't get excited about any one place to sit. I personally prefer the big comfortable booths to the unstable, cold, hard wooden chairs in the drafty middle of the room, but the servers typically refuse requests about seating. I witnessed two servers aggressively harangue a customer and his family of four because he wanted to sit in a booth. He looked rather humiliated, and frankly, it was really uncomfortable to watch and listen to, happening right next to my table. I have been here a few times because their vegetarian menu (there is an identical meat menu as well) is pretty fun and full of variety. However, the food is not always good, not always well portioned, and sometimes, doesn't look or taste or even resemble what I read on the menu. And this thing where two TWO servers refused to bring any water, even after I politely asked three times, and was told yes, water will be brought. The food is pretty salty, sticky, congeals, and you need water to wash it down. As far as price goes, I suppose it's about par for course, unless the food is not good, then no price is cheap enough. I have to admit that I am addicted to this place. If I can, I would have their Vegetarian/Vegan menu #45 everyday. I am a meat eater though I love their Vegetarian Meat dishes. They are known for various selections on Vegan/Vegetarian menu items. I would also like to mention that they have several noodle options. There are other types of noodle than Pho and Vermicelli! This is somewhat a dive Vietnamese restaurant. If your priorities on eating out consist of good service and how cool/fancy the establishment is, then you may not fully enjoy this place. If you want yummy, reasonable and consistently good Vietnamese dishes, this place won't be a disappointment. There are lots of Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle. I order from the vegetarian menu, Bi Goi Cuon (spring rolls), Ca Thu Xao Xa Ot (fried 'fish' with lemongrass served with rice), and sometimes the Banh Canh Chai (udon noodles). These are all bangers and your meal would most likely cost less than $10. Every time I am in Seattle, moonlight cafe is on my list of places to go. This time I ended up there for dinner but usually I try to hit up lunch for under $7 for an entree and rice (brown if you request it). I always order the vegan general tso's "chicken" and am always very happy. Their fake meat is interesting and not fried as most general's tends to be but the flavor is delicious. My gf ordered the pho with fake chicken and talked about it for the rest of the trip. If you are vegan and have been thinking about trying this place, do yourself a favor and go for lunch. Just remember that you may have a gluten baby afterward and to order it spicy if that's how you like your food as otherwise, it will be -5 stars. read more

I used to order their non-vegan/vegetarian counterpart (spicy beef noodle soup), which was very delicious. I'd swear the spicy tofu noodle soup is much better and more flavlourful. I really like the Moonlight Cafe...like, a lot. I'm not vegan, so I always order off the meat menu. I hear the vegan dishes are delightful if you fancy that sort of thing. The place isn't much to look at on the outside, and it might actually scare you away a bit if you judge it solely based on how it looks. However, when you walk in there, everything changes. The service is prompt and polite, and the prices are cheap. I love going for lunch...the BF and I split the chicken curry and Mongolian beef, and it winds up being a lot of food. Both those dishes are delicious, as are the pork skewers with fried rice, salad, and fried spring roll. The pork dish tastes really fresh and cleanly prepared, and the spring rolls are great as well. I'm not a huge fan of their pho, simply because it's very 5-spicey, and that flavor is too overpowering for me. However, I have many friends who quite like Moonlight's pho and actually prefer it to other places nearby. I hear people get down on karaoke nights at Moonlight, so one of these days I'm gonna go check out the karaoke scene. Until then, I will come back to this place again and again for their great-tasting food and reasonable prices. read more
