I usually get the #9 off the veggie menu, a smorgasbord of roll yourself egg roles and fried egg roles. Dip the wrapper in boiling water (wash your hands hipsters!) grab some noodles, lettuce, and basil, and dip in the sweet chili sauce. Soooooo good. For two people you won't leave with a bill more than $20 for 2 entrees. As with most ID restaurants, the food is so good you don't need a super attentive server. Okay...I'm a total meat-a-saurus...but Moonlight Cafe has some supreme vegetarian tastycakes! My veggie-saurus friends live very close by (in fact, they walk here almost once a week) and recommended that we get take-out for dinner. I am always game to try new cuisines (I have not experimented much with Vietnamese, I'll be honest), especially vegetarian cuisine. I have found that some of the most delicious Asian food has been vegetarian, so I was eager to try out a few different dishes. I went with the beef curry, which was seriously heaven in your mouth. Each bite was better than the previous. Pour it over some rice...so f'ing good. I got this dish with real beef, but it can also come vegetarian. I complimented this with crispy noodles with vegetables, which came with a thick gravy that softened the crispy noodles into deliciousness. Without the gravy, it's similar to the appetizer noodles they give you at some Chinese restaurants, which is also quite delicious. My friends ordered a vegetarian beef steak, which I did not try, but it smelled absolutely heavenly. There was also a vegetarian beef broccoli dish that was really sick good, too. All dishes come with a generous portion of steamed rice. Moonlight's menu is quite extensive; there are so many dishes that I MUST try. I would really like to give the pho a go, as I have become quite obsessed with this Vietnamese noodle soup dish recently. Plus, Moonlight is located directly across from a bread factory, and let me just say...the smells from that place are positively YUMMY. A Seattle vegetarian Vietnamese gold standard. They have a full carnivorous (red menu) and vegetarian (green) menu. Highly recommend it. The original owner converted fully to Buddhism and is now a nun, she sold the business to her brother and owns another restaurant in Renton. Family and I have been going here for years. For vegetarians: the noodle soups are excellent, esp. the veggie pho. For meat eaters: try the pho ap chap. A crispy heavenly rendition of noodles at the bottom and stir fried veggies at the top. How does this place have such stellar reviews!? We were handed both a vegetarian menu and a regular menu. Although we are both vegan, I thought this was pretty cool. So other than being pretty run down on the outside (and I'll hand it to you, this wasn't a deterrent for us. Some of the best spots are dingy and divey!), we were off to a good start. The tea was great. Now, to no fault to those who waitress here, I am a new vegan. I am new to mock meats, as most of what I consume are vegetables, tofu and tempeh (okay, and Oreos. Did you know that Oreos are vegan!?) I've only recently ventured into other options, like TVP, for example. I had asked the waitress, per what was in the menu, what exactly "The meat and seafood on the menu are for name sake only. The dishes are 100% vegetables" meant. More specifically, what is in the mongolian "beef" (and oh my god my favorite dish as a carnivore, and I've FINALLY found a place that makes it vegetarian!). She did not know. I asked if it was tofu covered in the mongolian sauce, etc. She had no idea. Okay - that's fine. She was sweet enough. I decided to try it. My boyfriends vegetable fried rice came out about 5 minutes before my dish and was warm and mediocre at best. He will eat anything once it's been covered in enough hot sauce, though, so he was fine. My mongolian mystery plate came out. I was shocked. It looked like beef (granted, I haven't seen meat in a while) and I was so apprehensive. I made my partner try it first. He had previously been vegan for 13 years and assured me it wasn't meat. I wanted to check with the waitress, though, as she is front line of the restaurant (oh, and ask for some water as we hadn't received any). I first asked, "is this meat?", she said no. So I asked her to clarify what it was, she still didn't know. I found it slightly appalling that she could not tell me what one of the main ingredients in a dish they probably use a lot of was, and that she was unable to ask the chef, or someone who had been there longer than her to possibly clarify for a customer who is clearly a little concerned with the plate of food in front of her. Throughout this, I forgot to ask for some water. Then I looked down. I am DEAD ASS SERIOUS there was a hair on my rice. I honestly could not make this up if I tried. Then I looked to my left, the walls were filthy. Like, spilled food and pure gunk that had not even attempted to be cleaned for months. THEN someone came out from the back, hacked up something from his throat, and spit it in a trash can next to the register. THEN a gentleman on said cash register sat down at a table next to us and started prepping and cutting broccoli with his BARE HANDS. I swear to god. This happened. How is this place still running? This was probably my worst food related, dining out nightmare I could ever fathom happening in real life. But, throughout all of that, we didn't make a scene (or I didn't, rather. My partner is so relaxed and amazing), boxed up our food (he actually finished his previously frozen fried rice, I threw my food out after leaving the restaurant), paid, and walked out the door. Now I'm doing what everyone else today does and writes a nasty review about a nasty experience to hopefully help others not make the same awful decision we did earlier this afternoon. DON'T EAT HERE Literally the worst food I've ever eaten and no level of table service whatsoever. My husband and I ordered two dishes to share - a curry chicken rice dish and a pork & fried egg dish over rice. The curry dish was reminiscent of cafeteria food and tasted, smelled and had the texture of food poured out of a bag and warmed in a microwave. The egg on the pork dish was cooked OVER HARD and the dipping sauce tasted only of pure fish oil. PLEASE NOTE: I am familiar with and adore Vietnamese cuisine. This was a disgrace. I NEVER do this, but had to ask to send back the curry dish due to it being ineligible. The "server" stated, "you wanna send this back when you finished the dish?" Telling me I finished the meal... no apologies. The manager came over and didn't have anything to say, but allowed for me to order another dish, of which I later cancelled because I was dining with two others who wanted to leave because their food too was smelly, smooshy and a sad excuse for a dish. The manager not only didn't apologize, but also didn't have the decency to take away the plate of disgusting food. Ah, the Moonlight Cafe. I love this neighborhood! This place even has a parking lot!!! So this place is quintessential Vietnamese interior. Large tables in a less-than glamorous space. It's super cool that they have separate menus for veggie and meat. It gets really busy during the days, but later at night it quiets down quite a bit. If you're going for Pho, this place is good.. but not the best Pho around. The other noodle soups can be hit or miss, but most everything will be delicious. As far as apps, the Ch giò is really delicious. It actually is ALMOST as good as Mom's ;) but a great starter! Some of the mains, obviously I have not tried them all, are also very good. Freshness is key in Vietnamese food and there is definitely a lot of vibrant colors going on with a lot of their dishes. Pretty delicious authentic Vietnamese food. I believe they serve both vegetarian dishes and traditional dishes with meat. The vegetarian dishes are full of flavor and tastes almost like the real deal. Food is good if they get it right. I ordered a seafood crispy noodle dish and a beef fried rice noodle dish. When it came out they mixed the meats up. When I told them it was incorrect, they took it back and instead of redoing the order, they did some ghetto ass switch of the meats and half ass job at assembling. So now both dishes have the same flavored sauce....the seafood crispy noodle dish had a brown beef sauce and some of the rice noodles from the other dish and vice versa. We were on a tight schedule as it was without the mix up, so I didn't want to bring it up again and just ate the ghetto fix. In general, its decent food but this place is wicked slow. They have a huge variety of Viet dishes and a dedicated vegetarian selection so it's nice of you have people with dietary restrictions. 3.5 stars The exterior looks pretty run down and the interior at a glance looks clean enough. I might have given this place 4 stars but once you sit down and start touching stuff, you'll realize it actually needs a good thorough cleaning though because it feels icky. Like sticky icky. The chopsticks came wrapped in paper but they are not the cheap one time use take out ones. No, they are the reusable plastic ones and need a good bleaching or something to get all the invisible gunk off. The rice pot and plastic rice paddle were also quite sticky - pretty gross. If you're a local, you probably wouldn't mind any of this because the food tastes good and the price is very reasonable. If I tried bringing some of my "high-maintenance" friends here, they probably wouldn't want to stay and complain the entire time (cue eye rolls), then leave a 1 star review just because it felt icky. Don't tell me y'all don't have at least one friend like that. The service here was nice although I think there was some miscommunication somewhere in the ordering process. Great place to take "low-maintenance" vegetarian/vegan friends. Lots of options to choose from - in fact, they offer 2 menus - for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. That's really awesome. We ordered from both menus: the general tso's chicken and the vegetarian chicken chow mein. Not sure what was delivered to our table but I don't think it was general tso's chicken. Tasted more like sweet & sour chicken. Regardless, it was very tasty (although maybe not very healthy?). The chow mein was tasty too but I'm beginning to realize that I must have an aversion to grease when I am stupidly not expecting it. I mean, when is chow mein ever not greasy? Overall, I was unhappy with my experience here and should have chosen a better establishment to have lunch at with a friend. While leaving this location, there was a slight unclean, spoilt smell near the kitchen. However, no sickness took place after my meal. The service was lacking and my glass was left empty for over 15 minutes on multiple occasions, as it was a slow Sunday this seemed far too long. Additionally, I had to request the check twice from two different staff members due to the first one ignoring us and leaving to the other side of the dining room. As the employees do not wear a uniform or name tag, it was difficult to locate a server to signal. Great prices for eating out on a budget! I ordered from one app on Grubhub and they gave me all vegetarian items even though I clearly read it in Vietnamese and English that one item was not a vegetarian item. I wish I were clever enough to pen a song about my secret love affair with fake meat. If I were, trust me--it would break hearts, start revolutions, and unite enemy nations in a gluttonous feast of goodwill. Fake meat, you complete me. I was lucky enough to find myself at Moonlight Cafe for the first time recently with a charming dinner companion. Together we sampled the Cashew Chicken and the Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs (both veg). It's wonderful that they have full menus for meat-eaters and vegetarians. Everyone can get just what they want. Both of our dishes were delicious, with fully-flavored sauces and a perfect texture to the fake meat. The portions were generous, perfect for family-style dining. Moonlight is a bit divey, it's true, but the service was efficient and friendly, the tea flowed freely, and the restaurant clean and pleasant enough. And personally, if I'm staring down a heaping plate of delicious food I'd rather be in a place where I can really stuff my face without worrying about whether my ankles are crossed in an appropriately ladylike fashion. Vegetarian Bistro was closed (on a Tuesday- what gives??), so I looked to my lovely vegetable loving buddies for another option. The general consensus was Moonlight Cafe. Alright.. That's where we're goin.' Upon entry, it looks a bit like that basement you used to hang out in as a teenager. Neon. Bad leather couches. Pictures of perfectly manicured hands holding roses. I didn't let this phase me one bit, as I heard that the meat free dining here was damn good and that that 'short ribs' were to die for. We were seated promptly, and brought tea and menus. They've got the meat friendly menu, as well as the vegan menu, which I found to be nice. All entrees were reasonable at around $7.95 and the portions were huge! We got the Sweet & Sour Short Ribs, General Tso Chicken, Broccoli & Beef, Eggplant, and the Kung Pao chicken. Of the dishes, the short ribs were definitely the winner! I hadn't been to a place in a very long time where they do the fake meat thing, and I was really happy with most everything I ate here. The eggplant was also fabulous, as was the General Tso. Service is prompt. The bill was very reasonable and it was a great place to sit, eat, and converse about pressing issues like the new Mac Book, Unicorn crepes... and Corgi butts..? The food is amazingly delicious, and your meat eating friends (ahem) will still have plenty of choices with two separate menus - one with faux meat, the other with the real deal. Both have dishes that I'd recommend in a heartbeat. This visit we ate meatless: 'pork' skewers- OMG so GOOD!, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Veggie Curry. Both were seriously delicious but I think the curry sauce really bears a special mention, it was so perfectly spiced, with just enough creamy to curry. This Vietnamese place is truly the bomb. You can bring your most picky eaters here. Vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians and even dedicated carnivores will find plenty of things to order, and all with incredibly reasonable prices. Basically there's every kind of meat and "meat" combination you could imagine at an asian place (curries, stir fries, "item w/vegetable" combo) and you get brown or white rice. The lunch specials are the best deal all at under $8. Service has always been fast, and I've never had anything that tasted "off" here (which can sometimes be an issue in cheap places in the ID). It's a little bit out of the way but worth the drive, and there's free parking in the lot on-site and usually street parking nearby if that's full. Just remember the vegetarian dishes all have the same names as their real meat counterparts, so if you want meat, you say "i'd like chicken with vegetables, 'meat please'" (yes, I know that sounds weird, just do it). read more

It's quite easy to love Moonlight Cafe if you've ever been there. So I've gone to Moonlight on and off for years but have enjoyed a bit of a second honeymoon with them over the past few weeks. Have ordered both takeout and delivery, and without exception the food has been great and arrived/ready for pickup quickly. I probably never would have known this place was even here if it wasn't for Yelp, and I am now glad that a group of us were able to get together to try it out. The food selection has more than enough variety for anyone to enjoy. They market themselves as a vegetarian restaurant, but offer two separate menus, one with meat dishes and one without. Over the course of the night, we were able to sample about 10-12 different dishes and I would say only one or two weren't really to my liking. The service was friendly and very accommodating even for a group that had some various special requests and needs. Prices were also very reasonable as well, especially for the amount of food you get with each dish and the quality of the ingredients themselves. I will start off my review by saying: I am not a vegetarian. For you vegetarians out there, you can temper my review all you want - just the same way I read all of your reviews and ignore them once I figure out you can't be trusted since you don't eat bacon :P I realize the pendulum swings both ways, and I'm fine with this :P We stopped by here to try the Sesame Beef item on the list. After reading the reviews, I had a feeling that there was in fact no beef in this dish. But, I saw that they had a vegetarian menu and a regular menu. I hoped there would be a carnivore friendly version of this dish. I was wrong. They said they had a Mongolian beef dish that they could put sesame seeds on, but it wasn't *quite* the same as the Sesame Beef. Sigh. For the sake of posterity, I was forced to try the Sesame Beef as it came. Oh the sacrifices I make for this Seattle Foodie 100 list. Anyone that says: "Oh it tastes just like Sesame Beef!" is wrong, and it has been way too long since they've had any meat. Don't trust them! :P Don't get me wrong, it was a valiant effort. If you were just looking at it, you might be fooled. If you don't have a sensitive palate, you might be fooled too. If you haven't had beef in ages, well by golly this will probably be your favorite beef dish ever! I also ordered the General Tso's chicken. Waiter: "Would you like chicken or the vegetarian choice?" Me: "Oh geez, for the love of god, give me the real stuff." (he laughed) It wasn't half bad. The lunch portion was rather small, but it was the lunch portion after all. Our waiter was also very busy running the register, refills, busing tables, taking orders, delivering food.... so much so that he forgot to bring us a glass of water until I had almost completely finished my meal. Nice kid and all, but I really could have used that water. Just a bit of constructive criticism: don't call it Sesame Beef. I realize you do due diligence by putting it on the vegetarian menu and noting that it does not in fact contain any animal meat, but at least put "Beef" in quotation marks. Would I go back? No. I can get decent General Tso's chicken pretty much anywhere. Vegetarians/Vegans: this one's all yours. Go ahead and call it your sanctuary. You can have it. Take it. read more
