Neighborhood Greasy Spoon Today, my lunch companion and I stopped by Moon Valley Cafe for lunch. I want to start off on a positive note by saying the staff at Moon Valley Cafe are very friendly and the service is very good. That's why I feel terrible for calling out their food as being, to be honest, flavorless, and just not very good On this visit we had the chicken stew with biscuit and the fried chicken strip salad and to be honest both entrees, just were not good. The chicken on both entrees tasted overcooked, and the chicken stew lacked flavor. The entire meal was disappointing. Denny's or IHOP would be a less expensive option. read more

My hubby and I came in here on a whim after an early morning doctor appointment today and was pleasantly surprised! Even though the restaurant is not large or fancy, it has a very warm homey feeling to it. We love to venture into the unassuming mom and pop places hoping to find the best food and Moon Valley Cafe was a good choice. This is what you would call your classic home-cooked diner food, but I will say it was done very well. My hubby said his Belgian waffle was so much better than IHOP's he's never going back! I'm just sorry we didn't discover this place sooner because it is so close to our house - we could've had great waffles for years now! I really try not to be critical of the service industry, but our experience today was pretty terrible. After waiting for about 15 minutes for a table (not bad), we waited an hour for food (after watching others who were seated after us get their food). Adding insult to injury, my bacon/eggs/home fries/toast was missing the bacon and toast (50% success?) And the waitress lied by blaming the kitchen for losing the order when it seemed pretty clear that she forgot to put the order in. Manager gave us a "whopping" 20% discount for all that. SBL (Sexy Bearded Lover) wanted us to try something different. He picked out the Moon Valley Cafe for us to have brunch at. Walking into this place makes you feel like you're in a mom and pop joint. It had that family owned feel to it. Not sure that's the case, but thats how we both felt. We were immediately seated and our server took our drink order. The menu had a bunch of new things on it along with the long list of things they currently offered. I'm always a sucker for a club sandwich so that's what I ordered. However the Mac and cheese burger was super tempting. Someone near us ordered a burger and it looked mouth watering legit as the server passed by with it. Our noses were just hanging in the air trying to get another whiff. SBL orderd the French dip. The French dip was good SBL said. It wasn't too salty, or too fancy, just a regular yummy meat sandwich. My club on the other hand was stupid tasty. Honestly it was probably one of the best club sandwiches I've had in a very long time. The meat was fat, the lettuce was so crispy it freaked me out; everything in between that white bread was perfect. I couldn't have asked for better lunch... oh and the fries... the fries were so loooooong and crispy! Also something we totally appreciated was that the food came to us HOT. I don't know why it's so hard to get hot food to your table anymore. It's never as hot as it should be. By the time the plate hits the table and you get situated and ready for your first bite it's ends up being this kinda hot/luke warm situation. I want food so hot it will open my asthmatic airway! Pretty bummed with my last experience here. I have ordered a few times from moon valley and it's been decent. Today they got my order so wrong. I ordered eggs Ben with hashbrowns once delivered it was egg ben on a 1/2 piece of white toast instead of a biscuit and I was given fries instead of hashbrowns. Needless to say not happy after spending 43 dollars on breakfast. Oh and to top it off I got my boyfriend a sprite that cost 3.25 it was extremely small and not filled all the way. SMH. read more

We decided to stop off and check out this local eatery due to the positive reviews on Yelp. I have to concur with the reviews as my food was absolutely delicious. The steak was tender, flavorful and I loved it. The food was very good and I highly recommend this local gem. I live in Tempe and this place is located in North Phoenix about 1 hour away from me but I will still definitely return. The service was prompt and professional. Staff was super friendly and nice. The food and service is always amazing here. Last week was my second time there and I forgot to take pictures of my food because it is so good that I just jumped right in. I love the ambience it is very family oriented here. I wish I was a local and a regular because they greet their regulars by first name. I'm so glad I tried this cute little place!! It's the perfect place to take anyone. The staff all are very friendly and helpful!! They have a nice dog friendly patio (unfortunately not smoke free but that's the only draw back). The food was absolutely amazing, one of the best hamburgers I've had in AZ!! I have driven by this place a 100 time but tonight I decided to try it out. It it always good to have a nice cafe nearby when you don't want to cook. It was not to busy as they have just started dinner on Thursday Friday and Saturday. Our server was great very friendly and spent the time to answer all of our questions. I was expecting just average food but there were some stand outs first the mashed potatoes and gravy were great and my girlfriend had the kids meal grilled cheese and fries ( it was by her choice I am not that cheap) and she was very satisfied the grilled cheese was gooey and the bread was crispy without being greasy. I also had the liver which was cooked just right. Now the desserts I had cherry pie alamode and she had coconut cream pie both were outstanding and I would come back to just have the dessert. A lot of good and bad going on here at breakfast time. The good? Friendly servers. Coffee refilled promptly. Classic décor. Eat at the counter if you like. Regulars evident. I really like the overall vibe. I even like the advertisements imbedded in the table tops. The bad? The restaurant was not busy and I cannot imagine why it took so long to prepare a simple breakfast platter on this day. I didn't time it, but it took so long I had time to read my entire newspaper. Twice. The pancakes then looked great, but they were tough and even difficult to cut. Not good. An issue of consistency. A request for crisp bacon was not honored, a recurring pet peeve of mine I'll admit, but interesting given another recent reviewer complained about burned bacon. Consistency issues again. It's also a bit on the expensive side for a traditional breakfast spot, perhaps just because the specials don't suit my needs. I'll be back, searching for reasons to add a star to this review. I love the place and the people and fully expected to write a four or five star review. I'm thinking of trying a meal other than breakfast, perhaps an all you can eat spaghetti night with the five and six year olds in my life. I also noted an emphasis on beer sales and even live entertainment, so maybe they're just trying to do too many things at this point in time to truly excel at breakfast. The menus are greasy-they feel like they don't clean them off EVER. The food is just average. I hate to say this but Denny's would actually be a better choice down the road. This was a great place for breakfast. We were visiting my Mom and always go to Cracker Barrel but my sister suggested we try this place. It is in a little mall, easy to find. The servers were really nice and friendly, and took our order once we got a good look at the menu.
