We popped into 40th Street Cafe for breakfast this morning and immediately loved the relaxed, old-school neighborhood diner atmosphere. The walls are decorated with veteran memorabilia and there's a real hometown feel. Even though it was before 7 a.m., there were already quite a few diners enjoying breakfast. There's seating both inside and outside, although it is not dog friendly. Ashley was our server, and she sets the gold standard for service. She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. We both ordered the Belgian waffle with a side of bacon. Everything was very tasty, and the bacon comes with four slices--always a win in my book! The prices are very reasonable, too. Had my favorite today. Biscuits and Gravy. Well they fix it. The last time the gravy was like paste. To day the gravy was great it has great seasoning and nice sausage in it. Also the biscuits have been upgraded they are nice and soft and they hold the gravy well. The way the biscuits and gravy was today is why I come here! I've been coming hard for over 15 years. The food is consistently amazing, the coffee is always on point, and the service makes you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. This place is nice. The restaurant is a little cramped inside. I got the country fried steak and eggs and honestly not bad. The eggs were good. I asked for fries and got potatoes however. The country fried steak itself isn't horrible. It's is crunchy because it has more batter I think. The gravy also was kind of bland and needed salt. Not to compare but Cracker Barrel country fried steak I personally think is better. The staff is friendly though and quite nice. read more

Great hidden breakfast gem. We went as we were craving a well cooked traditional 2 egg breakfast. We were quickly seated and had prompt service of coffee while we gazed at the menu knowing what we wanted already ;) The eggs were perfectly over easy and had buttered sourdough toast to soak up those yummy yolks. They even allowed me to swap my hash browns for fruit as I wasn't trying to carb load. The place was full of locals who know a great spot. read more

Tiny but mighty locally owned breakfast & lunch spot in a small strip mall on the corner of 40th and greenway. I have lived in the neighborhood 15 years and for some reason never tried it. Walls are filled with images of our veterans and military memorabilia. It's just one small open dining area with tables and a small counter are to eat. Today I had the healthy choice omelette loaded with veggies. I subbed the fruit for home fries and that was the best decision. They were the best potatoes I have ever had in a restaurant. I asked for them crispy and the cook listened. They were not burnt like some places do when you ask for crispy but rather perfectly prepared. It is a very small place with maybe 20 tables but their staff was attentive and the food came out incredibly quickly. I will be back again and this will become a spot I bring my tourists. read more

It had been a few years since I had been here. Not because the food and service isn't great, we just don't live in the area. Was craving pork roll (it's a Jersey thing), my husband had the day off for our anniversary and were going to be close by for another errand so 40th St. was the perfect spot. Ordered my regular breakfast sandwich subbing the pork roll for standard breakfast meat. ($3.99 upcharge but well worth it). Husband ordered the Polish sausage breakfast. Place is full of regulars the wait staff know on a first name basis. Food comes out quickly and hot. Mine was perfect. Husband's would have been but he ordered hashbrowns but received home fries. Home fries cooked great but he hates potato skin. His scrambled eggs cooked nicely and polish sausage split and caramelized on the flat top. My sandwich was as it always is. Bread and pork roll griddled perfectly. Egg over medium, cheese melty. This sandwich is a taste of home for me. Two eggs instead of one would have made my year. This little spot serves great breakfast at a decent price. Personable customer service in a clean atmosphere. All week I'd been craving the vegetarian Eggs Benedict that I had last week so we went again today. They were totally awesome again. I also had a side order of sausage that were moist and perfectly seasoned. This time my son ordered the Chicken Strips. He got 3 chicken breasts that were huge with a crispy batter that was delicious. The best part of our visit today was meeting the soul of the restaurant, Peggy. This is my style of breakfast restaurant - small diner, servers knew most of the people, clean, and reasonable prices on the menu. Had the scramble, which included a large biscuit, slices of ham, scrambled eggs, and hash browns, all topped with really good sausage gravy. Great portion - fast service. I have heard so many good things about this place ! As the story goes 30 years run by the same couple It's a testament to their loyal Fan Base, that they weathered Covid. Owners and staff are extremely Friendly even when I made a preposterous request for Hand Warmers. Doesn't every restaurant have them when it's a bit chilly to eat outside? Our waitress was very nice so this isn't a knock on her but we came in at about 11am and were seated fairly quickly. Small place but they only had 3 servers and maybe 2 people cooking. It took about 20 minutes to have our order taken and about another 45-50 minutes to get our food. Our waitress was clearly flustered because as the restaurant started to clear out it became painfully obvious that there were 4 or 5 tables all waiting for their food. She came over and told is our food was coming out next and immediately went around to all the other tables to tell the other patrons the same thing. When our food finally came out they informed my wife that they were all out of sweet potato fries and offered to bring her another side but after waiting over an hour to get this food we couldn't wait any longer. My burger came out but my chili fries were taking longer so they did t come out for another 10 minutes (after I had finished my burger). The funny topper is as my fries were placed next to my empty plate the waitress said "better late than never". But not really. The food was ok. It wasn't terrible but not worth waiting for. I can't imagine ever coming back. There's no world where waiting 50 minutes for a hamburger and 60 minutes for chili fries is acceptable. read more

Food is classic greasy spoon breakfast & lunch options. Lots of options for omnivores & some for vegetarians. I opted for the veggie eggs benny (avo, tomato, spinach) & it did not disappoint. My partner got the French toast & it was phenomenal. Our server was great, no issues whatsoever with her. We were told about this place being on the "deans list" by local health inspectors. A clean restaurant & kitchen will always get my business so I was down to give it a try & while I'm not disappointed that I did, I am bit surprised by how dirty the kitchen appeared to be when I walked past it to go to the bathroom. It took me by surprise to see what looked like build up of food on the floor, staff storing their food on the water heater & cleaning supplies on the prep line. Maybe they had a crazy rush prior to us arriving but it was a Friday morning so not as busy as say a Saturday or Sunday may be for brunch. I will certainly go back but may not put so much stock into the "clean kitchen" concept that the health department awarded them. Bec what I saw was the opposite of such. I came here with my family this past Saturday for brunch. There were 8 off us and they were able accommodate us by pushing tables together within minutes. Our drink orders were taken quickly and our drinks were delivered just as quick. Same went with our food. I ordered the Tuna Melt with a side salad instead of fries. The salad was decent, the pickle was large and the sandwich was smaller than I expected. The tuna salad tasted good though! My husband ordered the Eggs Benedict and I tried a few bites. It was really good! If I come here again I am going to order that for sure. My brother ordered the Ultimate Skillet and the Clam Strips. I tried the Clam Strips, they were really tasty! Parking was easy which is always a plus. The service was brisk and to the point. The inside of the Cafe was decorated with Military memorabilia which was interesting to read and look at.
