Came here recently with friends for a solid weekend dinner. One of the guys used to live in the area and loved coming here so it was overdue for his return. For me, it was a big hike up to the north side- but totally worth the haul! I grew up in the Midwest, occasionally going to one or two German restaurant/ clubs, so this was not an unfamiliar atmosphere to me. It is definitely a "seasoned" vibe, having immediately taken over the space by a former western bar/beer hall that had been in existence for 50+ years. Their menu says "German and Hungarian" but all I read was German. They have a solid European beer selection, including taps and bottles and some cocktails with a German twist. The one that threw me for a loop (in the best way) was Kriek! So ofc I got a pint. We shared a (fairly large) pretzel to start, which comes with beer cheese. Tasty, but I was genuinely shocked there was no mustard. I ordered the jagerschnitzel (pork) and just overall the meal was as expected as if I was in the Midwest - amazing, delicious, insert chef's kiss. I wish I could have joined the clean plate club. The cucumber salad was flavorful and not too sour/pickley. My friend and I both noted how umami the savory sauce was- not too bacon, not too mushroom. The potatoes were not too salty or under-seasoned. Literally willing to drive up again if/when someone tells me to go. It wasn't horribly busy so it didn't take forever to order and get everything we needed. Our server was super nice and patient. Review for take-out. Picked up a couple of schnitzels for lunch with spatzle and red cabbage. I had the chicken. It tasted like wienerschnitzel. I was impressed with the size of the schnitzel portion. By the end of the meal I was very full. I know there is a beer garden behind the restaurant but it is probably better at night or in the winter as it was over 100 degrees when I was there. We did a take out from here at lunch. I had the Jager schnitzel, red cabbage, and spatzle. The schnitzel was huge and the mushroom gravy was very good! Red cabbage was tasty. Only slightly disappointed in the spatzle. Let's just say that I have had better. Plus I learned from my grandmother how to make spatzle and had to make it for many family Thanksgivings and Christmases, so I'm a tad picky. I can imagine it being packed during Oktoberfest, and maybe I'd give it another try then, but otherwise this one was rough. I ordered a beer that had supposedly just been tapped, but somehow it was warm. After tasting the warm beer, a gin and tonic was ordered. I don't understand the reviews from 30 days ago or two months ago - Edelweiss has been closed for repairs since May. Shady. We used to go to Edelweiss every Friday night. Have a fine German beer and good food. It was our place. Then it slowly went down hill. So far down hill, that we haven't been back in a few years. We saw that they had been closed for a few months for repairs and just opened back up last weekend. So we thought we'd pop in and see all the improvements. Yikes y'all. First of all, bring a fan. Even though they've been closed for repairs since May, they didn't bother to make sure the AC works. It doesn't. Neither do many of the ceiling fans. Soooooo hot. I mean, hot. Really HOT. It was 110 degrees in Phoenix today and this restaurant didn't have a working AC. They do have floor fans, one in the front room and one in the back room, that the servers are apparently not allowed to turn on without permission. Really? There is not a new menu as advertised. And, even though they have a 'secret menu' on their website, they don't really have a secret menu. They serve nothing on that menu in the actual restaurant. If you try to order from the 'secret menu' , they tell you it's not a real menu and they don't have any of those items. Take it off your website, then, and quit advertising it. Bottom line: The beer is still good (although, no frosty mugs or cold glasses to serve it in), the big pretzel and the Chicken Paprikash are still so yummy, the bathrooms are still as nasty as they've ever been and it's so hot inside the restaurant that your beer is warm before you get 3 sips of it. So, drink it fast then leave and go somewhere with working AC. Needless to say, highly disappointed. We were hoping for big things and ended up with more of the same. read more

This place is a family favorite for us. Went to celebrate Father's Day this time. Service was excellent as always. Menu has been updated a bit and there are now a couple cocktails. My son and I are in town for the 2025 AAE Arizona Cup and looking for interesting places to eat. I love German food and so we gave Edelweiss a whirl. Interesting neighborhood but does have private parking. Folks out jogging so appears safe. German decor as expected. Created by three different folks on the way in. Seated in a booth as it was cool for outside. Very friendly waitress. Found a delicious sounding beer off of their extensive tap list which is front and back of a nice menu. I opted for my usual Jagerschnitzel with red cabbage and cucumber salad. Joseph had the Hungarian Sausage and cheesy spatzle. All was good. As you can see for some reason they opted to put the mushroom gravy in a cup instead of on the huge piece of meat could have used more gravy but was still tasty. I'm not sure why I haven't been to this place before! We visited on a Wednesday night, and they had a trivia night going on. We found seats at the bar and got to try some beer samples that the friendly waitress kindly offered. The vibe was great, with lots of charming German mug decor. Great food, exceptional service. My sister brought us to Edelweiss Biergarten for the first time. Our server was friendly and accommodating, answering all our questions and making thoughtful recommendations. She chatted with us enough to make us know that she cared, but not so much as to be intrusive. When my sister mentioned that one of the beers on the menu had our surname in its name, our server brought her a mardi gras type beaded necklace with the logo of the beer on it. Such a thoughtful touch! We started with the Pogi, which is basically a cross between a biscuit and a roll. What made it really special was the house-made warm cranberry sauce. It was so good that I asked for a large side to take home, which they happily provided for me. It's going on English muffins in the morning. My husband had the beef stroganoff, and it has literally ruined him for stroganoff from anywhere else, ever. The beef was tender and well-seasoned, and it was served over fluffy spaetzle. My spaetzle with feta cheese, bacon, and sour cream was delicious. For dessert, we had the Apple Strudel and the Black Forest Cake. The strudel was flaky, with apples that were delicately spiced but not mushy or overly sweet. The cake... I've never had such a beautifully light cake. My fork met almost no resistance as I took a bite. It was made with fresh cherries -- not processed pie filling-- and had a whipped cream frosting that again, was not overly sweet. Although I've never been to Germany or Hungary, I have no doubt that our meal was the real deal. All in all, a simply wonderful experience. read more

I had been craving Eisbein all week and this place DID. NOT. DISAPPOINT! The pork was literally falling off the bone, and the sauerkraut and potatoes were cooked to PERFECTION. I didn't expect the broth at the bottom of the plate-bowl but I ended up slurping that up like the best damn soup I've ever had! On top of all the amazing food, the shining star of this place is Emily. I sat there for a while and witnessed various folks and groups come in and Emily was on top of everything! From greeting people at the door to taking orders to recommending certain products; she was sweet, pleasant, chill, and knowledgeable as hell! In passing, she told me that she left the bier cheese from my pretzel bites appetizer out because she really likes putting it on top of the Eisbein and the potatoes. Being a card-carrying fat guy, I have no idea how my mind didn't jump to that conclusion right away; GENIUS! Whatever she's making at this place, it's not enough. Stumbled across this restaurant and hoped for a good German dinner. It's amusing that every German restaurant seems to have cheeseball pictures taped to the walls. At least this place had a mountainside background for their accordion player - who was not there. Otherwise they have an interior that does replicate a biergarten with long wooden tables, etc. I started with a Schneider Edel-weisse beer. It was good as one would expect. I then ordered the Jager schnitzel which came with German home fried potatoes and cucumber salad. When the food arrived, almost too quickly, I was surprised to see the Jager sauce in a side cup. It didn't quite look right and I momentarily thought it was the wrong thing. The server assured me it was and that that's how all the sauce is served. My half German hairs rose on the back of my neck. I sampled the sauce and it was ok. I sampled the schnitzel and it was also OK. Together they were less than ok but I was hungry and ate most of it. The home fried potatoes were also just ok, a little colder than desired and lacking in flavor beyond the oil they were nearly swimming in. The cucumber salad was also less than wonderful. I left a good bit of all three things when I left. (I even left some of the beer - a cardinal sin). Had it been better than ok, I would have scarfed it all down - though the schnitzel was of a size that celebrated quantity over quality. I ate a lot - but not all - of the food, cashed out and headed on my way. I could have taken some out for later, and chose not to. It wasn't great German food,... wait for it... just ok. It gets an ok score of 3. But I won't go back the next time I'm in Phoenix. read more
