Due to a lack of response about what kind of appetizers we would like to pick from prior to the date of the evening and without a curtesy email or phone call back to follow up, they canceled our party. As we reached out to ensure they would be ready for us in 2 days, we were only then notified they had someone "buy out" our reservation. Again, no notice about the cancellation to us prior. 2 years ago we had an event here for 40 people and they did not even designate 1 full time server for us; causing high wait times for any acknowledgment on drinks, food etc. I see now that this establishment is mismanaged to its core. Having fully completed an AZ (Phoenix to Grand Canyon beer tour), I feel overall, State 48 is a solid, but average, brewery choice- Our first pit-stop after landing, the brewery had a welcoming arrival-with friendly staff, helpful to offer samples & talk through beer profiles- We opted into a flight $17 for 5 beers (sampling all the IPAs)- I was a bit dismayed ordering because despite the website tap list claimed to be recently updated, they actually didn't have any of the 9 IPAs they had listed- but luckily had 5 new rotations to offer so we weren't completely down & out- The beers were decently average, ranging from 2-3stars on Untapped; dank, piney, hoppy, but nothing really wowed the taste buds- The inside was very beautiful, a neat contrast of cozy ambiance compared to the busy outside chaos of the city- there seemed to be a lot of regulars enjoying drinks- and they offer HH 4-6pm for $4 pours & very reasonably priced crowlers to-go, though we didn't partake- Overall, glad we tried, as our vacation intent was AZ brewery experiences- wouldn't be in my top must-visit, but glad we tried ourselves read more

It was a Saturday night and the place was virtually empty - not a good vibe. We waited to be seated, but no one came up front - so we headed back and seated ourselves. We each ordered a beer and they were ok. We ordered a fish and chips (substituted onion rings) to munch on and the fish was really awful. Fish had no flavor and the batter was doughy and not tasty. I have nothing but great things to say about this place. We travelled from San Diego to watch the Padres/Diamondbacks game and this was our pregame choice to have a beer. First off, we tried their Sound of Freedom IPA the night before when we stumbled upon it at the grocery store near our hotel. It was really good so that's why we decided to check out their brewery. The convenience with parking and location was perfect and we really liked the ambiance inside. They had a good choice of beers and I can't say enough about our bartender, Amanda. She was so sweet, patient, and kind! I would have loved the beers anyway, but she took it to another level. Talk about someone who makes you feel welcome. She was so awesome that she literally gave me the shirt off her back! Seriously...she did. I really wanted a specific shirt of theirs but they only had XL and 3XL left. I was bummed but we carried on drinking and later on she brought the XL for me to at least look at. I tried it on and it was a bit oversized so I was bummed. Amanda knew how much I wanted it so she literally offered to go change out of the size medium one that she was wearing so that I could have it. Wow! It was so unexpected and beyond amazing. Come here if you're going to a show nearby. The restaurant is a stone's throw from: AZ Financial Theater, Crescent Ballroom, Ziggy Stardust, Van Buren, and Orpheum. If you have a show to go to, come here before or after and you won't be disappointed. It's a smart choice from all the nearby options because the food menu is quite extensive and surprisingly good. I enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich (not that spicy) and everyone else at my table really enjoyed their meals as well. You'll be hard pressed to find parking for this restaurant but when you do you'll be happy it's so well located to other spots. In terms of ambiance, it looks like any other pub or sports bar on the inside, nothing surprising about the interior including the service but it'll be a good time none the less. read more

I'm going to start off by saying that I know every place has an off night now and then. I'm also going to say that the food was pretty good the first time I went there. What was decidedly terrible was the service. The first time I was there, I was meeting friends before a concert, so there was admittedly a time crunch. However, despite the restaurant being only about a third full, it took nearly half an hour for someone to take our order, and another half hour before our food was served. I made a point to get the check the moment our plates came out because I knew if I didn't say something, we might never get the opportunity to pay. So that was one thing. And I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt; maybe it was an off night. My wife and I went back -- again, before a concert -- and we sat for twenty minutes without even being given water. Next to a window. In the middle of August. And there were only half a dozen other tables with customers. We ended up leaving and heading to Gus's around the corner, where we had excellent service. I won't make the mistake of bothering with State 48 again. The only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is that the food is decent if you ever get a chance to have any of it. read more

This is a good location downtown. My friend and I have been wanting to try it. The scene is welcoming and the vibe is quite chill. If you're a big beer fan and want to support local brews, this is your spot. I'm not the biggest beer fan, so my review will be more on the food in general. I did get a passion fruit lemon drop cocktail that was pretty good though. We had a comedy show later so decided to stick with appetizers so we could avoid leftovers we couldn't take home with us. My friend got the fried pickles and seemed to enjoy them. I got the soft pretzels with beer cheese which was tasty. We shared their Kentucky fried chicken and it was fine. Lacked some seasoning to be honest. Overall the food was decent, but again the vibe was the best part. The staff were really friendly. It's cool inside with some local art and the alcohol is displayed pretty beautifully. Went to see a show at the Van Buren and the doors weren't opened yet so stopped at this establishment across the street for a cocktail and some apps. The service was efficient and friendly. I ordered the Pornstar Martini and it was delish! My friend got the Peach Sour and said it was really bourbon-y. We also got onion rings and breadsticks, both were good. However, when it came time to pay the bill, I was stunned to find out they do not accept apple pay! Most restaurants I visit either accept apple pay or have a scan code to pay from your phone. Tried out State 48 last night for the first time. It was a Friday night and around 4:30-5:00. The place had people in it but not too many. We easily got seated and promptly given water and menus. Our server was Terry. He is what I prefer in a server. Not hovering but attentive to his tables. I have lately been in a lager/beer/ale mood. So state 48 has a lot to choose from. The menu is very descriptive and includes the IBU ratings for their selections which is really helpful in choosing your drink based on your taste. For food there is a decent selection. I ordered the pb & j burger. Now normally I like this burger no matter what. This particular one had to be one of the best I've had. There was enough peanut butter for you to know it was there but not dripping off the burger once it was heated up from the burger. The peach jalepeno jam was a perfect compliment. Looking around the restaurant was very active. There are psychedelic murals on the walls that seem to make the place. Interesting to look at and fun at the same time. read more

Nice restaurant in Downtown Phoenix area that provides a more chill environment than most of the other places around here. Big drink menu and so many options. Food was very tasty. Big stick and serpentine ipa are now in my top 5 beers. Food was great too- kid was happy with her chicken tenders, beer cheese burger was great, brisket sandwich was awesome (a bit spicy for a Wisconsin girl, but it was a good heat), and nachos were all fantastic. The pasta was spicy but not hot. And there was a good amount of chicken and bacon. Unfortunately they didn't have any bread available to sop up the extra sauce. The burger was huge but cooked just right. It came with seasoned fries. Really good. Service was spotty. The bartenders were busy but not busy enough to warrant the wait. This is a fantastic local brewery and we are more than a little mad that we can't get their beer back in Texas. We both did flights and every one of them was better than the last. Loved loved loved their IPAs. The bartender gave me a taste of their sour and it was fantastic - he said it was finished with salt which gave it a different flavor profile. This is a great spot to grab a beer if you are in downtown Phoenix. It's right next to the The Van Buren music venue. State 48 Downtown is a pretty large brewpub that is housed in a building constructed in the 20's. This location is way bigger than their original location in Surprise. You can see all the tanks and fermenters through their windows. I personally like that they do this because I enjoy seeing the beer making process. The bar area is spacious and has a U-shaped bar with plenty of seating. State 48 has a very large selection of beers on tap that include a variety of IPAs and ales. The Vortex Amber is my personal favorite of their beers. State 48 also has pretty good food. The menu includes a variety of classic American comfort food. I'm always wanting a little heat in my food so I got the Sonoran Burger. It was very tasty! One of my favorite things about this place are the murals painted on the walls inside. They are so colorful and it makes State 48 a nice fit within the surrounding arts district. Make sure you go on a little mini walking tour and check them out while you are here. State 48 Brewery also has a large room off to the side for private parties. read more

Ambiance was off putting! Brewery vibes were not too strong here but the beer was good. I just wish the scenery was a little better. They have a lot of fine dining tables and a huge bar smack in the middle which in my opinion didn't match. It just wasn't the best vibes BUT the beer was amazing. We had gotten flights and I ended with the blackberry sour. 10/10 would recommend that ale. The set up was just strange to me but the beer is great. I didn't get to try the food though. The bartender lost track of our order because staff delivered it to another table, she clocked out, and the kitchen had closed. No one noticed until we asked for our burger, and so it took even longer because they had to "fire up the kitchen again" Yes they comped [just] the burger (not the flights) then apologized. No the burger was not the best, I'm sure it was a rushed processed because the patty was bland.
