So many things went wrong... 1) Made an online reservation for my Hub's bday dinner on a Saturday. No confirmation email of date/time. Received a confirmation text Saturday morning. Again, no date/time. Texted to confirm. 2) Get there Saturday evening to a PACKED house. Hostesses inform me that my reservation was for Sunday night NOT Saturday night. OK...I can deal with that. Could have been my mistake. But I ask them why doesn't their text show a date/time? They try and flash me their POS screen and say they DEFINITELY had a date/time. I show them my phone, which they don't even bother to glance at, saying no, the text they sent me had no date or time in the text body. They say we can go to the packed bar and get a table. There is full service there. Since it is SMU grad night, there is not even ONE table to be had, apparently. 3) Go to bar and order the Hubs a martini ($22 by the way). See a table leave. I go up and casually ask if they're leaving and they say yes, I can have their table and have a great night! I sit down and text my family to head on over. As soon as my family arrives, someone from the bar area (server? bartender?) comes over and says the table is RESERVED. Wait, what? The table is still littered with drinks from the previous people and it took my family about 5 mins to get their drinks at the bar and mosey over! Yes she says, the table is reserved...then proceeds to slam a reserved sign down...while my family of four is sitting there. Why are the hostesses telling me to grab a table, and now that I've done it, I get kicked out of it? 4) She finally gets a manager to come over with some lame excuse of why the table is reserved, without being reserved. But hey, we can have the table right next to them once they leave (next table is just now paying their tab). 5) We leave, because as my daughter says, why am I going to pay $400-$500 for a supposed Michelin star experience while eating in the loud bar where I can barely hear my family talk, or see my food, while having a crowd of people hovering over me? Don't think I will now ever come back, regardless of how many good reviews I see. We did have one nice manager come up and try and find us a seat in the OTHER lounge. Fortyish brunette woman with curly hair tied up in a bun. The only pleasant person out of the 5-6 we spoke to that night. If you want good steak, go for the old Dallas institutions of Pappa's, Nick and Sam's, and Bob's. Always a top notch experience. Wagyu steak at an Italian restaurant? If I want good Italian, at least Buggati's knows my name and we're always treated well. Eately is new in town, give them a try! I may not get the view, but it's been ruined for me. From reservation inception to the dinner invoice, everything was phenomenal. From the hospitality staff to the dessert, 5 star! The Head Maitre D' (Wiame) was very professional and exceptionally helpful to swiftly / correctly / amiably handle a couple of situations that drove us to return a second time in less than a month. James was an outstanding server ambassador for Monarch and helped us whenever we needed in an expeditious manner. James had the most balanced approach to know when to visit the table, see any progressive opportunities, and executed quietly / quickly. The food presentation / quality was astutely fantastic and should be in national travel magazines for others nationally to see "what 'Dallas' right looks like." I surprised my wife for her birthday dinner with eating at Monarch. From the time we pulled up to the time we left the service was awesome. Valet parking to free glass of sparkling wine when entering. It's located on the 49th floor with a amazing view of Dallas ( You will take a lot of pictures of the beautiful restaurant and skyline). Our server was spectacular ( Aaron ). Prior to our food coming we had a lengthy conversation with Eric ( Director of Beverage Services) . He was very pleasant and made us feel like we were right at home. The atmosphere is very laid back, quiet and serene. Now to the food, I didn't expect to get as much as we did. I was full with eating about 20% of my food. I got the veal and potatoes and my wife got the lasagna. Very tasty, loved it. Great ambiance,fantastic view but food was unimpressive. Champagne greeting in lobby but no masks worn by hosts upstairs upon arrival. Manager checked in at end of table mid meal and had no mask on either. It can get very loud inside as they really pack the tables close together. But let's get to the food. Meatballs were dry and broiled and tasted like mini hamburgers Crudo was not very fresh tasting. Main courses: truffle risotto was bland and not a hint of truffle flavor, pasta Bolognese while authentic in texture was very oversalted Salmon was underwhelming and meager size filet. Chocolate soufflé was served dry with no sauce for center. Had not had indigestion in a long time but this meal did it! Ushered into a VERY noisy little green painted back room... past many open tables with window views. One guest continued to be brought his cocktail... twice... after he did not re-order it. On the positive side, the food was mostly outstanding. Meatballs. Tuna tartare. Antelope. Halibut. Ravioli. Do not order the shrimp or the Caesar salad. Bummer #1 Having never been there before we relied on recommendations from friends, the wait staff and yelp reviewers. We attempted to order the 40oz porterhouse so two of us could share it along with some sides. I was told they only had two for the whole night and our neighboring table took the last one. All others had been "reserved" for a private party. I didn't realize I needed to order ahead to ensure what I wanted. Bummer #2 Overall our food was delicious. We had the carpaccio for a starter. We ordered the Rib Eye and Filet along with the whipped potatoes and fire roasted asparagus for entrees. But in the end the experience was underwhelming. It was loud in the dining room and our seat location was less than optimal. I am not sure if I needed to request a special seat. If so I missed that part. And frankly the other dining room looked to be nicer than the one by the bar. Not sure however as we didn't go back there. Ate here in March and when the bill came, they charged an extra $100 on the bottle of wine I ordered. If I didn't check they would have just taken it. My wife is a queen, and last night for her birthday Monarch treated her like royalty. For that I couldn't be more thankful. From the start the service was top notch. The complimentary champagne was a classy touch. We were seated almost immediately and found out our we would be sitting in Hash's section. What a blessing that was. He went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of. If you have a reservation try your hardest to sit in his section. You won't regret it. The wood fire bread and ricotta spread was a great start to the meal. We then had the prosciutto salad which combined the perfect amount of prosciutto, lettuce, arugula and a wonderful cheese. My wife ordered a pasta dish and I had the chicken entree. The portions were very large and the flavor combinations were unmatched. We finished the meal with a chocolate soufflé and a walk around the restaurant to observe the out of this world views. I would like to specially thank Hash, Jennifer and Ryne for the best experience I've had in a dinner setting. The amount of care this staff has for its customers is unmatched. Yes. Everything about this place is a solid yes for me. Great view, knowledgeable and friendly staff, a glass of champagne, comfortable seating, lovely ambiance, and of course great food and drink. Like other reviews mentioned, you can get a glass of champagne to take on the elevator ride to the restaurant. This is just a great bonus, I absolutely did not need this extra touch to rate Monarch 5 stars, but it certainly didn't hurt my opinion. If you've read a bunch of my reviews before, you know I'm a vegetarian. I asked the server if one of the pasta options I was considering would be ok, she knew the answer was no, and suggested other pastas and suggested that others I could ask for no meat in them. I went with one already made vegetarian. Husband ordered a different vegetarian pasta, but also ordered the veal. I loved the food. I got the pasta in vodka sauce and it was mouth watering. I said "This is so good," after almost every bite I took. Husband ordered the cacio e pepe. I tried a little and it was delicious. Honestly, it's nearly impossible to mess that up, but Monarch's was on another level. He said his veal was "Soooooo good!" The server bagged up our leftovers which I always find a bit weird, but fine. They also put our leftover cacio e pepe in a box, which was maybe 7 noodles? I ate it cold after getting back to hotel after our night out because it didn't seem worth putting in the microwave. Still delicious. Initially I was going to award them 3 stars but Micah J made it a 5 star!! We made reservations that required a credit card. When we came we had to wait 30 mins until we were seated. The bar was a little disorganized, or maybe it was just a sales tactic, we waited for 25 mins until we were offered a drink at the bar while we waited for our table to be ready. Honestly at this point I don't even want to whine about our bar experience as we are so happy with our server Micah, she was attentive, never pushy, (they close at 10 and we were given 100% service by her even at 10:30pm!) Our server MYKAL is responsible for at least half of these stars. I rate not only for the food but the experience given and I will tell you Mykal exceeded our expectations. From start to finish, he made sure we were taken care of. He's extremely knowledgeable, down to earth, and exemplifies professionalism. He made sure we got the full experience. My daughter has high functioning autism and he did not know. Not only did he make her feel included, he gave her some amazing suggestions as well as being patient with her making her decision. This brings me to my next point. Mykal knew the menu inside and out. Not only was he able to tell us the fan favorites as well as his favorites, he was able to give us HOW it was prepared and each ingredient. Not once did he look at the menu, he KNEW it. Even when we asked about other items, he was able to run down the item, preparation and ingredients. I am a pescatarian and I tend to look at the menu prior to booking to anticipate what I am able to eat. We made him aware of my dietary restriction at the beginning of the meal. When I was putting in my order, I chose a side that I thought was vegetarian and he immediately knew that it wasn't (there was no "let me check with the kitchen", or waiting until it arrives at the table to be disappointed to find I am unable to eat it). He needs a raise or to be in a management position or something. We love fine dining restaurants for birthdays & our new year tradition and we've never come across a server that was knowledgeable, down the earth AND professional. It's extremely rare to get a server that has all of these qualities. Please share this with corporate because we were absolutely blown away! Another staff member who was amazing was the woman that cleared our table. She was extremely friendly as so efficient. I wish I remembered her name but she is pictured as well. It was so impressive how efficient she was all while smiling and talking to us and my daughter as well. Everyone else was friendly but these two staff members stood out the most to us. The food was good. The oysters we heavenly and so were the sauces that they came with. The garlic mash potatoes were my favorite side, they were delicious. Thank you for the most amazing experience. I'm giving this 3 stars because our experience was bittersweet, to say the least. I'll start at the beginning and work my way through. The bitter: For starters, my boyfriend and I had reservations for 10:30pm for this past Saturday night (3/20) to celebrate our anniversary. Reservations were extremely hard to get so we were excited that even this time slot was available. This time is important so please remember this as you're reading this review. They close at 11:00pm. We were driving from about 40 minutes away so made sure to leave out in enough time to get to downtown and find parking (we were unaware that there was valet, much less complimentary valet - I just found that out from reading these reviews). So we battle through downtown traffic, drive around for 10 minutes looking for parking and rush to get to the restaurant (me, power walking in heels downtown) so that we can be on time for our reservations at 10:30pm. We arrive at approximately 5-10 minutes before our RESERVED time. We were greeted with free champagne and shown where the elevator was to the 49th floor. We ride up and exit the elevator and we're completely taken aback by the scene. It was loud. It was crowded. It was busy. It felt like a club. NO ONE was wearing a mask. There were people on top of people. Mind you, we are completely aware that Texas has lifted the mask requirement mandate but MANY restaurants are still requiring them. It would have helped to know that this one was not beforehand. In fact, Yelp even lists that this one IS following social distance guidelines and wearing masks. We felt bamboozled. But let's move on, we try to push past these concerns and make sure to just keep our own masks on. We check in with the hostess about our reservations. We are told that it would be a 20 minute wait because they are waiting for other parties to leave. We are told our reservations would still be "honored." Ok. We are a bit frustrated by this but 20 minutes doesn't sound SO bad. We wait. We try to find a comfortable place to stand and wait but there are literally people on top of people, all maskless. There is no empty space. Anyway, 20 minutes pass and nothing. My boyfriend checks in with the hostess again for an update. We are told that they are still waiting for other parties to leave. We are told that people have just been lingering around and that one table had been there for 4 HOURS. FOUR! At this point we are beyond annoyed. Our reservations didn't mean sh*t. How can anyone's reservation be honored if people can just linger around their tables for hours? We ended up being seated an entire hour after our reservation time. Remember that I said our time was at 10:30pm? This means we were finally sat at our table at 11:30pm. Which means we did not eat until approximately midnight. This was infuriating. This place boasts itself as a high-end restaurant but the vibe does not give that at all. It is more like a club. The venue is pretty. The views are nice. The atmosphere is NOT a fine-dining, Michelin star vibe. You've been warned. The sweet: The food was delicious. There was nothing we ordered that we did not like. We loved it so much that despite our horrible experience leading up to eating, we STILL wanted to come back. My hope is that they are working out the kinks as they have been open less than a month (which also makes me raise an eyebrow - as it seems extremely popular to have only been open a couple of weeks - good for them though - however they got their "followers." *wink). But some things are just common sense. You don't let people linger around for hours after they're done dining when you work purely on a reservation system and have others standing around waiting for their table. ESPECIALLY if they're reservations are at 10:30pm. I would also like to note that we received an email the next day from a GM asking us got feedback. We provided feedback on our experience and concerns (similar to what I said here) and his response was something along the lines of, " we are operating at 100% capacity and staff is asked to wear masks." There was not an acknowledgement of our wait time nor an apology in sight. So much for customer service. I don't know if we'll be going back. The lack of concern for customers/customer service is alarming. Oh forgot to mention, when we were done eating and wrapping up, our waitress brought us a "free" dessert to celebrate our anniversary. We did not ask for this. She presented it as a gift. We got our bill only to see that we had indeed been charged for this random dessert that we did not order. At this point, we were so tired and ready to leave (it is past 1am at this point) that we did not even feel like contesting it. What a massive disappointment - besides the sommelier and skyline view there was nothing pleasant about our experience. We went to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday with his best friend and mother and while it certainly made for a memorable birthday it was for all the wrong reasons - the service and food quality was surprisingly terrible. Prior to arriving I informed the restaurant of my food allergies and upon sitting down discussed food options with my server. He very flippantly made a comment that all the pastas were off limits for me and did not proceed to give any suggestions regarding what dishes could be modified. When I requested him to double check with the chef he came back and informed me that he "learned something new about the menu" and proceeded to give me a few options for dishes. We ordered an appetizer (prawns), a pasta dish each (bolognese modified for me, lasagna and cacio e pepe), the veal, the waygu the bistecca and two sides - our server made a point to emphasize that he would course the meal as "traditionally done in Italy." First out were the prawns (which were tasty). About 45 minutes later our server came back to inform me that one of the side dishes I ordered could not be modified for me so we substituted with another. After another 30 minutes every other dish was brought to our table - the pastas, mains and sides. We were quite confused considering our server made a point to discuss coursing and requested they leave the pastas and send out new meat when we were ready (i.e. course it appropriately). It only went downhill from there. My husbands cacio e pepe was over cooked bucatini in a tomato sauce - anyone who knows this dish is aware that it is not a tomato dish. My bolognese was also not a bolognese - it was a spicy tomato sauce on over cooked noodles, not away sauce. The lasagna for our friend/mother was served correctly but they thought the dish was average at best. At that point a manager came over and asked how things were going - we proceeded to explain that after over 2 hours at the restaurant we were served the wrong food with wrong timing that didn't even taste great and wanted the bill so we could go somewhere else - the level of frustration and disappointment was so high. He insisted to make us to-go dishes for the pasta (which we declined) and left to get the bill. Our server then came over and after I expressed confusion regarding what we were served his response was "I have no idea what's going on." It was just a mess, and one the you certainly don't expect from Michelin star chefs. On the positive the sommelier was delightful, she brought a South African bottle off menu and was a pleasure to interact with. The restaurant is also beautiful, amazing skyline views and intricate design touches. Other than that everything else was just disappointing, beyond terrible service and not great food. My thought is that Monarch is leveraging a great location and chef name as an opportunity to serve mediocre/overpriced food with awful service; once the trendiness of this place dies down I don't think it will survive unless major changes are made. My brother in law is Gianluca Franzoni so I've been blessed to have many amazing Michelin star meals across the world - this place fell so far from any of those experiences that I feel it's deceiving to mention the word Michelin on their website. There are so many excellent restaurants in Dallas - don't waste your time or money at Monarch. We ended my husbands 40th birthday celebration with a bottle of Venge and pizza from Cane Rosso; not the culinary experience I was expecting but much better than our experience at Monarch! read more

Three months ago I was able to score a reservation for a Saturday evening. What I didn't do was to make arrangements with the bank before we went. That being said monarch was an experience. Fresh bread was served with a ricotta spread infused with honey as well as an assortment of olives. We started off with multiple appetizers including the meatballs and the Crudo fish and the grilled octopus. I would definitely skip the fish next time as it was three types of sashimi into tiny pieces of each for $18. The meatballs were outstanding as well as the octopus. The main course was difficult to choose from so many good looking options. We decided on having one meat and one fish course. The Dover sole and the dry aged porterhouse fir $180. . It was amazing. We also tried the truffle risotto and green beans. We were very disappointed in the risotto. Way too much salt and a bit clumpy fir our taste. Perhaps it is the use of oil and salt not fresh truffles. The service was a bit spotty fir a restaurant of this caliber. The plates were not removed in a timely fashion and drinks not attended to either. I was surprised that nothing was done fir the anniversary noted in the reservation. A small plate of truffles or praline would be nice to end the meal. Coffee was not refilled or even offered. My overall impression of this restaurant is it's a wonderful place to go once. We went for a friends birthday dinner. Guys, WEAR A SPORT COAT! If not, they will supply you with one. You don't have to wear it at the table but it's necessary for walking about. All in all. We were greeted with a drink in the lobby and then offered a table once we reached the 49th floor. Couldn't resist! We decided to keep it light with pasta and two sides: cacio e pepe, rigatoni, truffle mashed potatoes, and summer squash. Well, kinda light, haha!! Everything was AMAZING!!! I tried not to be bothered by my experience but as I am sitting here looking at photos, I just get more and more frustrated. Atmosphere was fine, food was fine. My problem was the asshole who worked behind the bar. My wife and I were out celebrating our ANNIVERSARY. A special time, right? Wrong. There is a very nice bar area where we wanted to take some photos. The bartender kept on photo bombing behind our photos. I asked him to stop, twice. Nope, he kept doing it because he is a child working behind the bar. I'm not okay with that. I look at these photos and I see his face trying to get in the photo. I tried caviar for the 1st time and I can't compare it but everyone else raved about it but the servers quickly cleared the table when there was at least 3 servings of this expensive dish left. (Side note to staff - I get clearing for the next service but when a table has paid for the caviar, let them finish it instead of just clearing the table without a word. That was expensive and we weren't done). The truffle mushroom risotto.... Just give me that and I would've been ecstatic. I split the Bistecca steak and I don't even have words for it. Everyone loved the asparagus, I was underwhelmed but the potatoes.... Holy.Moly. I don't know what they did but they were incredible. That dessert was really good. I thought it would be an individual serving but it was to share. I'd normally be ok with that for the couples but the person I was forced to share with and I don't even know each other. So yes normally.... I'm not told how much my drinks are so I get it. But I normally feel like drinks are $5-$30 each... so maybe I'd understand not saying anything if it's $30 or less. But $150? That's just a little funny. It's ok, I'm still giving this place 5 stars. We all had a great time. The views are amazing. The food and drinks were amazing. I got the lasagna and it was the best I've ever had! The mushrooms were out of this world. My bro got a steak and said it was just okay. My dad loved his pasta too. What an amazing place to have dinner,this is a top of the line fine dining experience,from the decor the great views and amazing food,this was the second time we came here and after being blown away by jenn and the rest of the staff we had to come back,the crusted filet amazing with a wine reduction that set it off,the lobster spaghetti is one of a kind and if you don't try it at least once in your life you will regret it.The pasta is hand made and as fresh and authentic as it comes there's definitely not a bad bite,the focaccia bread with whatever spread that was will absolutely keep me coming back I'm absolutely crazy about it,all in all everything was great,I think our captains name was Zoe but I could be wrong,great service.Really and unforgettable dinning experience,we will be back!! read more

Food was excellent, I can't say enough about the bread, I could have eaten the bread alone for dinner and been happy. Portions were small for the price, but quality was on point. Leo was an AMAZING server, he really made the experience top notch for us. I wish I could say the same for the girl working the champagne in the lobby, she was super rude, seemed bothered by us, and tried to offer my 12 and 16 year old champagne... . She also didn't even direct us where to go after handing us champagne, we stood awkwardly looking around until a nice man pointed us in the direction of the elevator. ‍ Maybe being a family with kids in tow we didn't meet her expectations of the average guests?? Also valet parking is a NIGHTMARE if you need handicap access, we literally had to walk AROUND the building in the pouring rain to get to a ramp. Would I return? We went for dinner last night for our first time because we are staying at the Thompson. The views are stunning, and our waiter was friendly. He sent the sommelier over to help us choose a reasonably priced bottle of wine. We enjoyed what he helped us choose, and we weren't made to feel 'cheap' for not wanting an expensive bottle as some other reviewers have mentioned. My husband ordered the filet mignon with a side of mashed potatoes. He liked his meal. I ordered the shrimp ravioli. I noticed about 24 hours ago another reviewer noted she had food poisoning from the shrimp ravioli, and I did as well. This is the only item I ordered for dinner other than the desert we split. They made me very sick. For the desert we decided to share The Night Cap. The best part of it was the ice cream. In our opinion it's not really worth it, I wish we had ordered separate deserts to share. Overall our memory of our experience at this expensive high end restaurant is food poisoning from the shrimp ravioli. I wanted to post this after seeing another reviewer had an issue as well so hopefully others won't get sick. read more

Fine dining in the heart of Downtown Dallas! It's a lovely and romantic spot. Food portions are small; I wish more food was given for the price we paid. They have specific window seating that gives you a beautiful view of downtown Dallas. In order to snag those tables, you are required to spend at least $125 per person. They do have a dress code, so dress business casual or better. The food was pretty good, nothing out of this world. I did enjoy my carbonara pasta, but there wasn't enough of it. The bolognese was salty, but still very good. They do offer free bread service which was a nice touch. My favorite dish was probably the beef carpaccio appetizer; very tasty! The place has A Refined beauty; make sure you walk to the back of the restaurant to see the beautiful monarch decor... definitely worth a photo! They do offer valet service, which is encouraged to do and I would highly recommend. Self parking is a bit tough around that area. read more

4th time in Dallas and 1st time here. Lovely service, atmosphere and great food! Came for a friends birthday dinner and it was such a good experience. She said she made last minute reservations and still managed to get a table in the dining room with an awesome view of the sunset. Really made this trip special and I will definitely be coming back. We had the calamari, hummus, chopped and Cesar salad, veal, lasagna rolls, and some other stuff. All super delicious. Can't wait to come back. I read more

What an amazing experience. It's rare to get the combination of an awesome culinary experience, top-notch service, a sexy ambiance, and a skyline view. You get all of that at Monarch. Bella was outstanding as our tour guide throughout the evening, recommending perfect cocktails for us, based on our palettes. With so many options to choose from on the menu, we opted for the Royale...wow...honestly, it was too much food! It's a 5-course journey through the menu, hitting all the highlights, but leaving a few tempting items to keep us coming back for more. The highlight: having 2-Star Michelin Chef Danny Grant cook pasta for us at our table, and having Executive Chef Eric Dreyer come by to greet us before the night even began. Do I recommend this place? Absolutely! We already have our reservation set for our return visit.
