I didn't see anyone sanitize anything between patrons. First time I got my nails done here they were great. The second time-not good. The nail tech was nice, but I think their lighting is bad or the polish sucks or she felt rushed. She did a gel fill and polish. They looked fine in the store, but I went out in the sun and I could see all these dents and unevenness. Went back in and she did it again. Went out and it was even worse. Let me start by saying I used to LOVE this salon. However they have really gone downhill lately. They have become a lot busier recently and I think that's part of the problem. They now rush through doing all the nail services. There are still a couple who do a good job, which is why I give 2 stars instead of one. Went in yesterday and everyone was busy plus there were an additional 4 people in line so I decided to come back later. Went in tonight and got literally THE WORST fill in I have ever gotten anywhere. They apparently hired a new woman who was just awful. She hit my cuticles about 3 times with the mechanical file. Then put on so many layers of polish that I could not get them dry. On top of that the polish looked worse than I could do at home myself. I removed it as soon as I got home. Partially because of how bad it looked and because since after over 25 minutes the polish was still gooped on so it smeared everywhere. A friend of mine had told me I should try out this salon, I was of course a bit scared off by all of the reviews I read about this place here on Yelp but I was always complementing her nails so I figured hey they must be doing something right, right?! Well I am so glad I did!!! I called and made an appt with Tina, I was getting a gel manicure and a pedicure. I chose the second one up from the regular pedicure (I can't remember for the life of me what the name was.. but it had a menthol wrap and a sea salt scrub) since it was my first time there didn't want to go crazy trying their other options, which I will definitely try now that I know they're good. She took her time even though it was pretty busy, I hate it when I feel like it was a rushed job. Same with my gel manicure, she was precise and did an amazing job! I will be coming back to see Tina!! Cynthia was the other tech that my friend had recommended, I haven't tried her but I trust her judgement in that she will be just as good. read more

GREAT GREAT GREAT!!! There is a lady I know from work who's nails always look nice. I asked her where to go and she made this recommendation. I was disappointed with the outcome and finally came back and spoke with Diane. She personally fixed my nails and did a fantastic job. Although I did not request it she saw the job that was done and redid it at no charge. They are very customer service oriented. I am a believer in 2nd chances as no one is perfect so I went back to the same guy who disappointed me the 1st time. Guess what? He did a phenomenal job. I have been coming back for over a year since and have been pleased ever since. Keep in mind they do good work and are in a prime location. Second time returning (Young man was pleasant did not check to be sure the nails were even upon filing, when I asked for him to apply more product as you could see through my nails he stated , "let me finish"). I have been coming here for about a year and have been really happy with my manicures and pedicures. I feel like I've had great service from most of the different techs there with Louis being my regular guy. I give them four stars because I sent a friend here and she got the one person that I've had and been really disappointed with. She cut her cuticles on both pinkies and I ended up giving my friend a gift certificate to come back and have her nails done with Louis because I felt so badly. My recommendation is if you are unhappy with your service, let them know. When I had a bad experience with a pedicure they went above and beyond to fix it for me. I understand it sucks to be unhappy, but they can't fix it (or deal with the person who did a bad job) if you don't tell them. Also...if you're unhappy with the wait time make an appointment. You're waiting because there are obviously a lot of really happy repeat customers. If I come in without an appointment, I expect to wait...it's a given. read more

While their prices are lower than some of the other salons around, the quality is bad. I had a gel manicure done there on Thursday. It's Saturday morning and the polish on one of my nails just lifted off. Was not doing anything to cause it or exposing my nails to abnormal wear. $30 for nails that last 2 days is ridiculous. I am going out of town and now have to scramble to get this fixed. Any other salon I've used, my gel manicure lasts at least 2 weeks. Got a fill in... gel nails and gel polish and I did not do anything rough. I took an hour nap to wake up to one of my nails being messed up already. They rushed through my service..... $34 is too much to pay for a fill in for it to break in less than 24 hours!!! What the heck! This was my first time visiting this establishment. Overall, I was not impressed. I walked in without an appointment. The wait was about 45 minutes. I suspect it had something to do with the fact that a nail technician was missing. I chose the deluxe pedicure. It was a somewhat jarring experience. Not relaxing at all. I haven't even had a service yet and need to write from the pedicure chair to recommend that you do not try this salon. My sister and I came in for pedicures and manicures 40 minutes ago, were not given any indication that it would be a long wait, and have had to wait so long with no attention that we've had to ask twice to have the water warmed up. A woman briefly started to attend to my sister, but then got up and walked away, only returning five minutes later with no explanation, and is watching tv and not even looking at my sister's feet while beginning her treatment. It's now been 50 minutes and no one has started any kind of service for me. No one has checked in to let us know how much longer the wait will be, and I'm not seeing that anyone in the salon is receiving better treatment. For the number of salons in the area, I'd expect a business to run itself competitively, and this is abysmal. *update: the wait ended up being so long that I've had to ditch the idea of a manicure. I went there for the 1st time yesterday (only because my Aunt is a regular customer and she needed someone to take her to her appointment). I got a pedicure and the guy was kind of rude when I pointed out a callus on the bottom of my foot. I will say he removed an ingrown toenail for me which was much appreciated. I got the deluxe pedicure and really enjoyed it. I also had my 7 year old niece with me to get her nails and toes painted. They looked really good and she was happy until she took a shower a few hours later. When she got out of the shower, all of the polish had come off her fingernails. She was in tears (she loves to have her nails painted). I felt so bad for her. I will not go back there ever again. read more

My daughter and I went in for their "deluxe" pedis. They were very understaffed for such a prime location and we had to wait. (No big deal, I wanted time w my daughter.) The pedi was ok but nothing special and I still have dry skin left on my heels. That's ok too since it had been awhile since I'd had a pedi. My chief complaint is the chairs. After a few years of trying nail places around Durham, I finally found my nails a home. I get liquid gel sets and refils here, and they last a month or more without a refil. Beat that! Yolanda is the best to ever work on my hands and feet in 10 years. I can't speak to the quality of the other folks that work there because I have never had any work done by them. The first time Yolanda did my nails, she took the time to ask about my work and family and then ask how I wanted my nails to look and last. She then made suggestions that fit my work and lifestyle to fit my needs. She was right on target. I had been getting rounded square shape and white tips in solar gel powder 10 years. She suggested I try natural color tips with liquid gel in an oval shape. She said the shape, color and flexibility of that combination would be the best fit for what I told her about myself. It is. My sets and refils last 4 weeks now because the natural color tips look natural, and the liquid gel is strong and flexible which prevents breaking and peeling. The oval shape helps my stubby fingers look longer and more elegant. read more

I have been to "Modern" Nail Salon with my daughter this afternoon for the first and definitely LAST time... Having read some of the raving reviews I wonder whether these customers have very low hygiene standards, or perhaps they are family or friends of the owners, ready to write anything positive? Let me start with the name... "Modern" in this case is more aspirational than factual. The interior is grayish brown drab, but not everyone has an eye, or budget for interior decorating. What is - however - not acceptable is the poor hygiene standard. At the pedicure stations, the soaking tubs - unlike at the truly modern salons - are lacking the disposable liner. I have asked how they clean the filters and the tub and got answers and a demonstration. They are sprayed and rinsed quickly. Disposable liner gives more careful customers a much better protection against germs, fungi etc. left by other people. Consistent with poor hygiene standards, a rushed lady who spoke hardly any English tried to scrub my feet with a well used, old scrubbing block. Upon my insistence i got a brand new one for myself, and another for my daughter. Then she proceeded with unsterilized tools - nail clipper, cuticle nipper, files etc. How do i know they were not sterilized before? Experience! Any self-respecting salon opens freshly sterilized tools at the station for the customer to see. Also, my feet got nearly burned with a much too hot paraffin dip. My daughter wisely passed on this attraction... To give credit to the lady who was helping me, she suggested an additional application of the moisturizing lotion on my feet to compensate for the paraffin shock. At the manicure station she applied an awful smelling cuticle dissolving solution that I have never had applied before! She eventually allowed me to wash my hands and proceeded with a manicure. And here again the manicure tools came from a plastic container after they have been used for other customers forever... At that point I just wanted to get out of this salon... The nail polish was applied evenly and carefully, but the top coat must have been old/diluted as my hands smelled so badly that a cashier at the nearby Petco I visited directly after Modern Nail Salon commented on it. And we all know that Petco stores are not known for soothing smells. I left a symbolic tip for the lady helping me and for the gentleman tending to my daughter. Why? Because they listened to my concerns and tried to remedy the situation. Sitting at the drying station and anxious to get out of there, I had another look at the dusty floor (with nail clippings), nail polish-smudged, dirty little drying fans, and I felt so disappointed! I am sure that the people who work there try their best, but "once white" towels, poor hygiene standards can be only satisfying to those whose only selection criteria for a nail salon are: walk-in possibility and a relatively low price. And perhaps to the owners/management who are are happy with a current status quo. read more

I just moved to NC, so this was my first visit. Kevin did my nails, both manicure and pedicure, and he was wonderful. Very professional, did a great job and also did a nice foot/ankle and arm massage during the process. Kevin did not scare me with the clippers, as some do. I was very relaxed throughout the whole procedure. I paid $50 for gels, but this is cheaper than I am used to in my prior home in Texas.
