Very disappointed. I buy stuff there regularly, but was very disappointed when I bought a 'Open Box' laptop from them and went through the the software setup process, Win 10 setup and then removed big the Yellow and Green open box stickers. I discovered that the aluminum screen cover had a dent in. The sticker was placed very strategically over the dent to hide it. Unfortunately, I did not take the sticker off because I had 15 days to take it back and I thought that if the hardware gave me any problems when upgrading, I would take it back. As a 'Microcenter Insider', I feel cheated. Not what I expected from them. Certainly will change my buying behavior. My advice to anybody buying an Open Box item from Microcenter, check underneath the stickers! Microcenter made a real effort to assure me that there was no ill intention and that it was purely mistake by an employee. I was satisfied with the explanation and the effort they put in to rectify the situation. Off course they made amends with a gift card and I am changing the rating because of the real communication that took place between myself and their customers service department. It showed they cared what their customers think. read more

Adding my two cents, yes the sales people can be pushy sometimes but I think its easy to underappreciate that Micro Center itself is solid. They don't do anything shady like branding used products new, make it easy to deal with rebates on the products you buy, and stand by their return policy. After dealing with other tech resellers in the past (most of which have gone under), I feel lucky to live near a old skool computer store that isn't trying to con me. read more

The experience with this business is pretty bad. I have a charger cord for my phone that failed and I have been trying to use the 2 year replacement I purchased. It is impossible to contact the store and they force customers to use their text system. But the text system goes to a national dispatch who claim they can only send emails to the store for them to contact me directly. And then the store never does. Such a runaround. Since we are in a pandemic, I don't feel comfortable going inside their store. Their first response was a promise the store will contact me within 24 hours and work out a way to get this resolved without going inside their store. When I got no response from the store after several days, the dispatch promised to escalate it to corporate. After 5 days of my follow ups, they still have not resolved the issue and was told to wait another 24-48 hours for the store to call me. That's after days of an "escalation." The dispatch then suggested I go into the store, clearly ignoring the point of my request. Meanwhile, I have to keep my phone charged so I had to borrow a charger cord from a friend. I then purchased one on Amazon and already received it while MicroCenter continues to be unresponsive. Not only are they poorly run, they expect customers to risk their safety during a dangerous pandemic. And I feel cheated out of using the 2 year replacement I paid from them to resolve issues like this. Not a well run business and I won't be purchasing from them again. read more

Value seemed good and I bought a computer with warranty. It broke within six months. When I came in for service, I waited for at least an hour. Terribly slow technicians and horrible attitude. This is not the first time. If you ever think you need service, don't go to Micro Center. read more

Ever since CompUSA closed down, Micro Center has been one of the few places in the city left to pick up any kind of component or computer related part. They have a nice selection of Macs, more then enough parts to build / repair your own computer, and a ton of goodies. Prices are as good as you'll find online, but take into consideration shipping, and you'll sometimes find it for less here. Lots of free parking (unheard of for any store in Boston) and staff is very knowledgable. read more

Oh, Micro Center, savior of smartphones! Hope you're ready for this, because this time, we're gonna get geekay. The Google Nexus One was a glorious product for its time, allegedly futureproof but for its Achilles' heel, its woefully inadequate internal memory. I mean, come on, only 190 MB of space for apps and stuff? That shit goes like hotcakes. Fortunately, the phone features a micro SDHC slot that allows you to slather on the gigabytes, and if you root your phone, you can force EVERY SINGLE APP IN EXISTENCE to install on said external memory, even if it doesn't want to go willingly. Unfortunately, in my case the slow, slow read/write speeds of the included micro SDHC card ended up frequently freezing the phone's various apps, and often the entire OS would just lock up--only a restart could save me! Just when I thought I'd be forced to bite the bullet and blow a $350 load on Google's latest flagship, the Galaxy Nexus, it crossed my mind that upgrading the external memory card's speed would allow me to breathe new life into my beloved N1, permitting me e.g. to use a map and listen to music simultaneously once again! INSTALL ALL THE APPS! Hokay, so, I figured I'd play it safe and spring for a Class 10 card--a big step up from the phone's Class 4 card. I saw a couple online, e.g. on Newegg, but, no! I WANTED IT NOW. I tried CVS and RadioShack--hah!--but they only had measly Class 4 cards, and for the same price as the Class 10s I was seeing on Newegg--pshaw. BUT THEN IT HIT ME! Micro Center in Cambridge was but a 20 minute bike ride away--and so off I rode towards the land of NAND! Once I got there, however, I started to get this sinking feeling--I wasn't seeing too much in the way of portable storage, and, after much scouring through an appropriate section in the digital camera section, found an old, Class 10, 32 GB micro SDHC card back from when they were new, and $100. I asked a sales associate for a price/reality check. Yes, it was actually $100. Heartbroken, I was about to head home and just buy online, when I overhead another customer ask another sales dude where the generic, Micro Center-brand SD cards were. "Oh, you just have to ask for them at the register." O RLY? Okay, I figured it was worth a shot, but I was still kinda skeptical and was considering skipping the line at the register and calling the whole thing off. But patience! No, patience! Finally, called to the register, I said, "I'm looking for a micro SD card," gesticulating the small size of the storage device. No sooner than the words left my lips did the nice sales clerk have out a catalog of digital storage options. "What would you like it for?" she asked. "Oh, I want to record high-def videos with my phone," I fibbed a bit, mostly just to indicate I wanted something fast. I was surprised to spot a Class UHS-I--the speed rating above the card I was looking for!--in 16GB for a mere $20. Of course, the clever clerk also pointed out that there were a couple of Class 10 options, and the $25 one would hold 32 GB--oh, my! "And these cards come with a lifetime warranty." A LIFETIME FUCKING WARRANTY?! No receipt necessary? Agggggggggh! Yes, please, kthxbai! Needless to say, wicked happy. read more

A great store IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. In this day and age, it's hard finding computer parts in stores. Of all the bogus claims against the store, complaining about the prices is the most hilarious to anyone with a clue. Go to Newegg, look up a product, and then look up the same product at MC. It's either the same, or cheaper at MicroCenter. Sure, the customer service can suck, but these people work on commission. If you're serious about what you want, and show up with a plan, you get good service, or it won't matter because the ex-car salesman pointing you in the direction of the $700 electronic nose hair trimmer won't deter you. If you walk around dazed and confused looking for some computer savvy salesman to take you in his frail arms and carry you to a good purchase, expect to get taken for all you deserve to get taken for. Honestly, if you want to buy electronics, and you're not tech-savvy, then go to Best Buy. HOWEVER, if you know what you're doing, and a smooth talking salesman isn't going to convince you to buy a cybernetic third leg, then this is the store for you. read more

I had an overall very good experience at Micro Center. They were able to answer all of my questions and help me make an informed decision. I ended up purchasing 2 laptops (one for myself and one for my younger brother), an all-in-one printer and ink cartridges. I have had no thoughts of regret about either computer or the printer. All are working well. I also bought an extented in-store insurance plan on one of the laptops just in case whereas it was refurbished. The sales associate who helped me was very patient and down to earth. He didnt speak in a foreign computer alien language. (Thanks Reggie) The only downside that I have experienced in the store is that some shoppers seems hassled with too many associates asking them questions and wanting to help them. Some people need/want help and others don't- learn to feel out the difference. I would definitely go there again for a future computer need. read more

I am so surprised that my review for this store is low. I have many good memories of going there with my father as a child and just immersing ourselves in techie goodness. However, I am not at all pleased with this store now that I am an adult. They do have some clear benefits. The selection is large, especially if you are super techie and like putting things together yourself. However, I do not recommend this store if you need help from salespeople. I normally have a policy against writing poor reviews based on a single visit to an establishment. However, I spent so long at the store the other day and spoke with so many sales people that it is clear that this was not a fluke experience. In a nutshell, it seems like they simply do not put a lot of effort into the hiring and training of salespeople. It was extremely difficult finding someone to help me with a simple question, and each salesperson knew less than the next. I got a strong suspicion that some of the most knowledgeable people in the store were the other customers. I got a few contradicting pieces of information on really basic questions. One salesman even told me that the product I wanted did not exist. On top of having trouble finding useful help, some of the salespeople were not even polite. After finally spending a long time sorting through products on my own (with the help of my trusty iPhone), I finally picked out the product that I wanted to purchase. Thus began the next lengthy adventure of finding someone who was available to help. As I was standing near the product and searching the store, a salesman came by with two customers and pushed me out of the way. After a few dumbfounded minutes, I finally politely asked him where I could find someone to help me. He informed me that he would help me soon and just continued "helping" his customers. By "helping," I mean that he was picking up products and essentially exploring them along with the customers. He either was not trained or was ignoring/forgetting the training. After who knows how many minutes, I finally asked him if I could just purchase the product that I already had chosen. It seems that "purchase" was the magic word. He quickly went into the back and grabbed the form that I needed, complete with his name and id number. Even though I was not thrilled that he was getting credit for the sale after being the worst of the five people who "helped" me, I was happy to make my purchase and leave. MicroCenter reminds me a ton of Fry's Electronics on the west coast. You've got the same endless racks of computing minutae. The same windy checkout line with many cash registers standing by. Although I don't really like the store that much (always seems like there's a bunch of open box/damaged goods for sale that makes me a bit suspicious of whether what I'm buying is restock being sold as new), they do offer a decent selection of goods in stock and the prices aren't terrible (though you'll almost always do better on the Internet). Bring a computer savvy friend when shopping at Micro Center; the staff is too eager to put their little stickers on any item you browse at (the stickers are used to show who helped you- which, for some reason, has been interpreted as taking something out of a case and handing it to you). Microcenter is the worst possible customer experience combined with scavengers for salespeople and misleading policies. Rudeness and drama are the cherries on top. On multiple occasions in the past, I have been put off by the circulating raven-like used car salesmen they pass off as "help" at microcenter. However, recently I had an experience that can only be described as the worst customer-service encounter EVER in my LIFETIME: I purchased a laptop, the guy who gave me the service at the time of the purchase was extremely pushy. But I knew what I wanted and they had a nice price after a rebate. I specifically asked the salesman about the return policy on laptop computers, to which he replied, "no problem whatsoever for seven days." Then I asked, "what if it starts misbehaving on day #8?" To which he replied, "we're a big store, we take care of our customers, I am sure that would be no problem." Ok. so on Day #6 after my purchase, I return to Microcenter. nothing particularly wrong with the computer,I just didn't like it, for a number of reasons that are not germain to this story. I wait in line for 15 minutes (I was second in line, the guy at the counter is working alone, even though I readily counted 8 service/sales guys just loitering about the store) at the returns desk, until finally I try to make my return. The guy at the counter explains that they'll be charging me a 15% restocking fee. WHAT? this was a $2000 purchase, so we're talking $300 for nothing. Incidentally, on review, that information was printed in tiny print at the bottom of my receipt. But I would point out that one doesn't get a receipt until AFTER he pays, and I do not think it is customary for most people to carefully read a receipt before opening the box on a new item. However, I had specifically asked about it and was not told. I revisited the area of the store where I made the purchase - no sign. In fact, the only sign regarding the return policy in the ENTIRE STORE is posted at the one place where no purchase would be made - behind the returns and service desk. It is at least 8 feet from the desk, printed in a small thin black font on a red background - essentially illegible. while these practices are certianly suspect, that is not the worst of it. In short: the guy at the counter couldn't override the $300 restocking fee. I ask for the manager. I wat about 8 minutes, and the manager appears. He doesn't even hear me out - just repeats himself again and again that I have to pay the fee. I explain that the salesman was asked and was not forthcoming. I explain that the salesman in question is in the store, he had greeted me while I was in line. Then the store manager TAKES A PHONECALL while I am in the middle of a sentence. He walks away. He does not return for another 5 minutes. He then tells me that he spoke to the salesman, and that he did tell me about the restocking fee. I explain again that this was incorrect. I explain that this is called "bait and switch" in some circles, and is dishonest. I ask for HIS manager. He refuses. I ask if we can all talk together with the salesman. The manager says, "you can go talk to him yourself, I don't have time" and directs us to the salesman. So I approach the salesman, and explain, "I need to talk to you." Smirking, he refuses to speak to me. I says again, more loudly, "I need to speak with you NOW." He refuses, stating that he is "with a customer." I explain that if he refuses to speak to me that I can surely explain my problem loudly enough that he'll lose his sale. He then (get this!) walks away from me saying, "SECURITY!" and then (realizing that there is no security in the store, probably never existed) claims that I threatened him. I am five feet tall. I never raised my voice. I did not invade his personal space. So the mentality of Microcenter is if you don't like what the customer has to say, that you threaten to throw him out of the store? Excellent! But it gets better... The salesman argues with me. Then he starts insulting me. Then he tells me that his manager is "really pissed" at me. He then claims that that I tampered with the laptop (I had purchased some extra RAM but never opened it since I didn't like the computer, which I booted up exactly three times, and never opened up the case on the laptop). Then he takes the computer out of the box, examines it, says alound (to noone in particular) "get me my microscope thing" but then puts it away, and still hurling didactic-style insults at me, agrees to refund my money. I agree, begin to walk back tothe counter, and then he stops me, just to personally insult me, question my profession, and dismiss me. I go back to the service desk. The manager never reapproaches me. The inncocent lone returns guy processes my return, apologizing profusely. I walk out. and I vow to share this tale with you. read more

People cope daily with dozens of changes in scale and pace, whether working across time zones, traveling with relative ease between satellite maps and nanoscale images, drowning gleefully in information, or actisng fast in order to be able to slow down. I went to Micro Center not expecting a lot and was actually pleasantly surprised. My computer broke down this weekend - motherboard was dead, wouldn't turn on. I decided to make the switch from PC to Mac and figured I'd head to the Apple store, but first I needed to put my PC hard drive in an enclosure so the Apple store could transfer my files over. So, I went to Micro Center to buy the enclosure. Little did I know that I would be walking out with a MacBook Pro for $200 less than the Apple store price. Mike Stanley was the sales associate that I spoke with initially. He answered all of my questions and provided me with a lot of helpful information about making the switch from PC to Mac. I was skeptical about buying a Pro from Micro Center, and Mike didn't give me any dirty looks when I grilled him on how Micro Center could offer the Pro for $200 cheaper than the Apple store. Simply put, Micro Center doesn't spend the money to create the ambiance of the Apple store - and with the savings, they are able to offer competitive prices. Mike really went above and beyond and I'm glad that I was able to speak with him about my purchase. I would highly recommend that you go see Mike Stanley if you're in the mood for a Mac. So... the reason for the four star review? Mike passed me off to a colleague in another department for the hard drive enclosures. His coworker sold me two, one for each hard drive. One was wrong. Thankfully, both hard drives fit in one of the enclosures so I was only out $6 at the end of the day. Considering I saved $200 on the laptop, it's not that big a deal. Moral of the story - shop here before going to the Apple store... You'll be glad you did! read more

I may never buy an electronic item here -- not because i dont want to, but because i cannot get customer service. i tried to buy a camera last year. i researched cameras online, selected the one i wanted, and went to Microcenter because i didnt want to wait for delivery. in the span of 20 minutes, i asked three workers for help. each was too busy. i hung around the camera counter, looking in the case, leaning on the case, looking desperate for customer service. to no avail. lost sale. i went home and ordered it on amazon at a lower cost. a few months ago i tried to buy a printer. i did manage to get some worker to help me. i do alot of printing and scanning, know alot about printers and scanners, and had some very specific questions. the worker knew next to nothing about printers. he was reading the specs off the little tags in front of the items. uhh, i can do that myself. he recommended the printer that he owns. he admitted that he used it rarely -- to print e-tickets. he could not answer my questions. microcenter did not see the $500 i was prepared to spend. on thursday, i went to microcenter to buy an ipod as a gift for someone. i wandered, roamed, looked for a worker, hung around the ipods, kicked the ground, waited and waited. finally i asked a worker busy with other customers if these were the only ipods they carried. he told me to wait and he would give me a print out after he was done with his customer. yes or no would have sufficed. off i went, home to buy it on Amazon at a lower cost. and i could go on and on.... about the other electronics i have purchased in the past two years. but i will just tell you how the story ends. after visiting microcenter and not getting good customer service, i bought my laptop on amazon and i bought my desktop directly from the company that makes it. i do buy flash drives at microcenter. =) read more

I just bought a new battery and SSD for my mid-2009 Macbook Pro and had both installed at Micro Center. Here's what went well: Three different sales people were involved with this sale. The first helped with figuring out which battery I needed..He wasn't an SSD expert, so walked me over to someone who was...the handoff was no problem and the next guy seemed to know what he was talking about. While we were talking another salesperson (who seemed to know more) jumped in to answer some of my questions. By the time I chose which SSD to buy, I felt confident I was making a good purchase. The salesperson helping me with the SSD asked if I had looked for a 'price match' which was nice - Micro Center will match 'lowest price' of competitors. He found both my items for less and I saved about $15 there. I didn't ask for this, and was impressed he took the initiative to offer it to me. Here's what didn't go so well: 1.) When I was buying the battery, the salesperson told me the install was going to be 29.95 and the SSD install would be $40. But when I got to the desk to pay, the salesperson told me it's $49 to install a batter on a Macbook Pro and the salesperson was wrong. And it's $59.95 to install the SSD and the salesperson was wrong on that front too. No offer to compensate for the incorrect pricing. Since I saved with the price match and there was a long line of people behind me, I didn't make a stink about it, but that was $40 I should not have been charged. 2.) After paying for all my stuff, I went over to the install desk and waited in another line to get my installation. I didn't have to wait very long, but it would be nice if they could figure out a different process where the salesperson checks you in for the install so you don't have to wait a second time....but realize there are different levels of expertise there...maybe it's just not possible....but would be nice if you didn't have to wait in line twice... 3.) I chose a more expensive SSD because the tech helping me told me when I buy my next Mac, I can move the SSD over. (I mentioned all I really want is to get another two years out of my current laptop. I know I need to buy a new one. But if I can stretch this one a bit, I'd rather do that. In two years I'll have the newest technology instead of technology that's two years old and in the mean time all I really need is a bit more speed.) Once I got to the install desk, just per chance, because I was chatty, I mentioned this conversation. And the tech at the install desk told me actually, that's not true. The new Macbook Pro's are skinnier and the SSD I bought won't fit in the new ones. Of course by that point, I had waited through the line to pay for the SSD and waited in line to get to the install guy, and spent all that time talking to the sales people....and it was already 8 at night and I didn't feel like waiting in line again to return the SSD I just bought, then go find a saleperson to sell me a cheaper one, etc. Kind of annoyed. 4.) Also at the install desk I was asked if I was moving my data over myself. Uh, no. I thought that was included in my $59.95 installation fee? Guess what. It's not. Moving my data over is another $70. That would be fine if someone had bothered to mention it! Since the salespeople are all totally knowledgeable, I'm pretty sure they know that if you're buying an SSD, you are going to need to move your data onto it. Honestly. So here I am at the install desk, finding this out now. And if I want to pay for that, I have to go back to the register! 5. Also - the salesperson who had told me my installation would be quick and they could do it while I waited, did not mention it takes hours to move data over. I had told him I would need to take my laptop back that night. I didn't want to leave it at Micro Center. He should have said 'no problem. But just know that you'll have to move your data over yourself' And buy the way, to do that - i.e. to move my data over myself - I'll need to buy a 'black box' to put the old hard drive in to connect via usb and move all my stuff over to the new SSD. Again, none of this would have been a problem if someone had bothered to tell me up front. Guess what I see stacked up at the counter - black boxes. A giant pile of them. It's the ONLY thing on the counter other than mini flashlights that they're selling. So the KNOW they are going to be selling people another $10 black box for moving data over. They're counting onit. They're planning for it! So why not just be up front and let me know BEFORE I get into that checkout line?! Because guess what, after I had my installation completed I had to take that black box and GO BACK TO THE CHECKOUT, and wait AGAIN in line to pay for it. I totally don't care about the $10. t's a throw-away compared to the $300 I spent on battery, installation and SSD. What I do care about is my time. Making me wait in line 3 times was not necessary read more

One star due to multiple bad experiences, my biggest problem with them is that they list certain items in stock but once you get to the store it is sold out, you can not buy these items online you are forced to go to the store physically. I drove there for an hour because they listed a product had 5 items in stock. I called to confirm and once I got there, I showed them the 5 items and they said "oh we don't know where they are I think its sold out" you THINK??? That is so unprofessional, as I was leaving the store, they immediately turned that 5 items to "sold out" because I called them out on it. Do not falsely advertise you have products in stock, make it impossible to purchase online and force people into coming to the store physically. Large business such as this become impudent in their practices once they start having a lot of customers, they eventually do not care because they do not need your business which is why it is always better to buy from a local PC store since they go the extra mile to take of customers, large business such as Micro-center do not care at all. read more

Awful experience with Cambridge Micro Center getting a laptop, dock and two 4K 27" monitors. I went to Micro Center to buy a system where all the components would be compatible. Well, when I set it up, the dock they gave me didn't work properly with the 4K monitors. The salesman (I kept his busness card) ignored 3 emails, the online IT help system promised 4 separate times, serially, that someone from tech services would get back to me within 48 hours and it never happened. I went back in person once, but the store was closed in the middle of the day (they say for Covid cleaning). There is no phone number available to call. I don't expect people to be perfect but I do expect them to help solve problems they caused. Well, after threatening them with as many 1 star reviews as I have the patience to write, and a call to the BBB, a manager, Peter, got back to to me and met me to swap the dock they gave me with a different one. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this one was worse, the problem this time was that the thunderbolt 3 dock wasn't compatible with the laptop they sold me. So I hired an external IT consultant who had me order a dock from Dell online, and I plan to return the second dock provided by Micro Center. I will never go back there once this saga is concluded, and suggest readers do not go there, either. read more

I actually had an excellent experience at the microcenter today. I mean, nobody has to go to computer repair on their best day, but they were very fast with the diagnostics, lay out the options honestly, and then helped me find a very inexpensive computer as a replacement. Everyone was very friendly and I was in and out in very little time. Thanks guys! read more

Although I have been in here a number of times in the past, I only recently made my first purchase there. As numerous other reviewers state, it's a good place to shop if you don't like buying online from newegg or tigerdirect. Their prices for computer hardware are very competitive, and occasionally they have nice sales. If you know exactly what you are after, it can be a quick, money saving experience, UNLESS, you require employee assistance of some sorts. All of the sales associates seem to be busy at all times, either helping not so techno-savy folks or merchandising, etc. I wanted to purchase a CPU, which are all kept in locked up display cases. It took about 10 minutes after I told someone I wanted to make a purchase for another sales associate to actually come and unlock the case for me. The SA's WILL try and get you to buy stuff that you might not actually need (must be commission pay), but their advice is generally helpful. They sell new/used PC & console games as well, but their stock and prices were nothing to get excited about. You can trade in the aforementioned media for small amounts of store credit, which I did (a few xbox games), and was surprised when the remainder of credit was handed to me in cash after the purchase. All in all, I would recommend for rig builders who don't want to wait for their XYZ to be shipped, people who need to pick up various office supplies, or anyone that needs something computer related locally. read more
