I've known about the Byte shop for a year now (love the display in the window and vintage computers!). I walked in today because my laptop charger stopped working last night. I was the only customer so Tim helped me right away. He explained some possible causes and proceeded to open up the laptop to check out the charger port. He checked to make sure the current was flowing and suggested that I try a new charger first before opting for repairs. He was honest and didn't try to sucker me into service -- he suggested that I purchase a new laptop instead of having the the port repaired (if that was the issue). I was surprised to learn that the diagnostic was free! Took less than 20 minutes. I will return, if not for a future repair, to check out the vintage technology/museum. I was experiencing several issues with my PC and decided to bring it in to this repair shop because of all the good reviews. The good reviews were not lying! The owner is a knowledgeable and friendly guy, he was able to share his thought processes with me in easily understandable ways and ended up magically getting my PC to work free of charge. He also gave me some invaluable tips for fully utilizing my PC specs that I would have otherwise been ignorant of for the foreseeable future. I would recommend this shop to anybody in the Boston area. Also, his shop has a ton of cool vintage computers and electronics on display that are fun to look at while he does hands-on technical work. This is a 10/10 computer repair shop, I will be returning again in the future if/when I have more computer troubles! read more

I had a broken MacBook screen. Cheapest screen I could find online was 500+ dollars, and they were charging 750 for a new screen at apple and about 600 at other spots. I called this place up and they said they would put a new screen for 400. I came in to fix the screen and some old school video game consoles caught my attention. The owner of the shop displays old computers that arnt for sale but he happened to have two NES consoles as well as two copies of super Mario bros 3, so he said he's sell me the game and the console for 60 bucks (it might've even been 40or 50 bucks, I can't exactly remember, but it was definitely lower than the market price). Either way he's great with costumer service, and the shop is really neat. 6/5 stars read more

I just brought my laptop in. It had a charger issue and I had no idea what to do. I thought it could be an issue with the charger port but within 10 or so minutes Tim had found that he could power on the computer without the battery, which indicated that the battery was the problem with the computer charging. Not only did he not charge me for this diagnosis, he gave me a free tutorial on how to change the battery and told me to change it myself instead of paying him to do it if I wanted to save money. Since I wanted to thank him for his free service, I told him that I would leave a review. He told me that Yelp's AI had been blocking his reviews because it thought all of the 5 star reviews were bots. They're not. read more

While a repair shop is usually a place you end up because of unfortunate events, I couldn't have had a more positive experience!! When my fairly new MacBook wouldn't start up, I recalled the abundant glowing review is of The Byte Shop from the JP Facebook group, and headed there with lots of hope. Having tried many online troubleshooting techniques, I was beyond thrilled when they were able to get me up and running in under ten minutes. They were super informative, friendly and, best of all, really good at what they do. The shop itself is very cool, filled with computers from throughout tech history. Quick turn around, quality work and friendly. Had to have a vintage pc serviced and was greatly pleased with the work and entire experience from drop off to pick up. The knowledge Tim has on computers, new and vintage is going to be hard to top. The shop also does cell phone repair. As well as being known locally, in europe people know this ahop and travel all the way here, bringing computers with them for Tim to work on. That's a reputation! Look no further. Saved the computer! - I was carrying my laptop across the kitchen. During a busy moment cooking dinner, I turned from the stove to read the recipe and I spilled melted cheese over the keyboard. Although I spent lots of time trying to clean it up, the result was a computer which went berserk, spewing gibberish across the screen. I thought the laptop it was a lost cause no matter how much I tried to clean it. A family member suggested we bring it into Byte before we give up. I am so glad we did. Tim cleaned it up, installed a new keyboard and the computer is like new. Thrilled with the results and the money I saved. read more

Tim is super responsive, kind and calm in the face of computer difficulties. I immediately trusted him to come through for me, and he did! Between listening to my concern, seeking to fully understand what I wanted, and then getting the work done same-day so I'd have my computer up and running again, he was a pleasure to work with and did exactly what I needed done in a timely and efficient way. Parked in front of The Byte Shop while visiting Papercuts a few doors away. Noticed The Byte Shop for the first time and went in because I was having a problem on my phone receiving email once my company migrated to a different platform. This had been going on for a few weeks and driving me nuts. Within 5 minutes discussed the problem with Tim and he showed me how to fix it perfectly. My laptop stopped charging so I brought it in to The BYTE shop to have the owner take a look at it. He immediately started to troubleshoot the issue and figure out what was wrong. While troubleshooting he explained every part that he was checking and what he was looking for. He found the issue within 20 mins and had replaced the part in minutes. I would highly recommend the Byte Shop for tech repairs. I went in today as my computer stopped connecting to WIFI and he knew how to solve the problem and fixed it quickly while I was there. His prices are really reasonable ($40 total to replace the part) and I appreciate that he tries to use working parts from damaged computers to recycle/reuse as much as possible. I came here in a panic when the network driver on my laptop suddenly stopped stopped working. The employee found the issue and reinstalled the driver in under five minutes.
