Grant is terrific--he has fixed my laptop several time recently, including retrieving a lost contacts file and diagnosing a problem (slow computer) that required removing and then replacing all the software. I cannot understand critical reviews. He has always been friendly, incredibly responsive (same day--"bring it in"), and efficient. He is also mindful of costs/time and does not do work that is not necessary. For example, when my computer did not turn on, I called Grant and he told me about a 30 second fix that worked without my having to bring the laptop in. It is a great source of comfort to know that Grant is available to deal with the inevitable laptop problems in a manner that is friendly, timely and cost-effective. This is the first review I've written on Yelp only because I have never encountered a service practitioner who treated me with such utter disdain and disrespect. I got a pretty nasty virus on my computer recently that I couldn't fix myself, and after searching around for a place to take it I settled on Professional Geek. To be honest I really only picked them because of their proximity to my work, and I'm really happy that I stumbled on them. I called ahead and described the problem, and the dude that picked up the phone immediately recognized the symptoms and said he'd be able to fix it. When i brought it in I showed him the problem and he told me what he was going to try to do, and gave me the prices for each option. He gave me a day and time when it would be ready and told me he'd call me if it was ready earlier. On the morning of the day he said it would be ready I indeed got a voicemail from him saying that it was all set, fixed and ready to be picked up. When I went in to get it he told me what he did, and then showed me a couple of extra things he threw in. He had put a better-than-the-average-retail Virus Protection program on my computer and set it up for a 30 day free trial, and he also cleaned my screen, which was pretty gross when I brought it in. He charged me exactly what he quoted me, and not a penny more. At all times during both parts of the transaction he was friendly and very helpful. You know the old line, "You can have it good; You can have it fast; You can have it cheap; Pick two"? Doesn't apply here -- I got all three. My HP laptop, on which I depend utterly, every day, for my firm*, suddenly developed all kinds of failure modes (first it would drop the WiFi; then it couldn't find the connections that were there; then it wouldn't boot at all) -- but they were intermittent (the very toughest to trace and fix). Grant, the genius-in-residence at this Harvard Square shop, had me fully operational, with a new WiFi board, and doubled the memory I used to have (now a full terabyte, yay), but w/ my old drive contents cloned (so the replacement would be seamless), all in less than 48 hours, and for less than $300 (before tax). About several months ago, my Dell's power cord broke, and thus cannot power my laptop on. I brought it to Grant to fix, which took about 3 days for him to do. When we picked up the laptop, all was entirely well... ... until the next day, I shut down and restarted my computer (which I rarely do). All the sudden, the screen was blank and nothing I do could get it to respond. I immediately called Grant, and guess what was his first response. He started actually yelling that it isn't his fault and that we are the one that screwed it up, and broke it ourselves. After I propose he take a look, he grudgingly accept. When I went in to store, took a look at the laptop, and claimed that it was a software problem, thus not his problem. I decided that I'd see if I can fix it myself somehow. I called again 4 days later to ask for suggestion, which he immediately responded defensively, actually fighting with me saying that I'm the one who screwed it up and etc. I got it fixed now. And I don't recommend this company. If anything goes wrong while he is in possession of the computer, he's going to be unprofessional about it, and you're the one who is going to have to pay the price. P.S. My computer needed a hard drive replacement and a RAM upgrade. I brought my computer to these two guys and they did a fine job with the upgrade. More than 1 year out, it's still working well. Total bill for parts and service was $300. My one complaint is that they messed up my sound driver in the process, and I had to figure that out afterwards. It just involved downloading an update from Sony, but they could have saved me the hassle. read more

I used this place twice in last 12 months, once for PC (virus/failed hard drive) and more recently for a Mac (failed motherboard). In both cases, Grant was top notch. He fixes things fast, and he is VERY cost efficient - he never offers a more expensive solution, when a simpler one will do. I am super impressed with his level of knowledge about everything computer related. He has literally seen it all! In case of my 8-year old iMac, he not only fixed what was broken, but also suggested upgrading to an SSD, which made it fast (again, after several years of sluggish performance). And in both cases, all of my photos/videos/music was restored, giving me a huge sigh of relief. There was a screw stuck in my laptop. I would pay $60 if he took it for me. That is insane. I refused it. Then he changed his tone, claimed the screwdriver was his and let me get it somewhere else. So as is the case with all HP laptops, I was faced with the dreaded blue screen of death about a week after initially taking my computer in. Once again, Grant was very very helpful and repaired my laptop in a timely matter. In fact, I went to pick it up much later than I had planned to and he was on the way home for the night but was still very very helpful and answered all my questions instead of rushing me out the door so he could go home. I have never had a laptop repaired by someone other than the manufacturer so I'm not sure if $310 for diagnostic, installing a new hard drive, reinstalling my OS and all my data and data transfer is good or not but I am happy to have my computer back and working very well...so far LOL read more

Professional Geeks cheated me! I came to this shop to have my laptop's video chipset replaced or refurbished. I was quoted a price of $250 for this work. I compared this price with several other quotes from other companies, and it seemed competitive, so I authorized Professional Geeks to do the work. When I came to pick up my laptop, I was hit with an additional charge of $120 for "labor," of which I was not previously informed. No hint that any other fee might be charged was ever given to me. This company did not even do the work, but sent the laptop to another company to do the work. Dissatisfied with being cheated, I thought I'd rather deal with the company that actually did the repair if anything further was needed. The owner of Professional Geeks rudely refused to even tell me the name of the company that did the actual work. read more

I came here on two separate dates. First I was trying to do my own repair on an Ibook and ripped off my power supply (to strong for my own good). They charge me 80 bucks and got within an hour. Second I tried to replace my optical drive, but I snapped off some bracket, again big muscles and delicate motherboards, fixed in an hour this time 60 bucks. I shopped around and everybody wanted at least 50-75 bucks just to see it! No thanks these guys are laid back and very capable. read more

DO NOT USE!!!! I got my mac repaired here after a spill. I got the motherboard replaced, making it so that no apple shop would be able to replace it in the future, which is a bummer, because six months later my computer stopped powering up, and a LOOSE SCREW was discovered floating on this "perfectly good" motherboard. I went into professional geeks with a 2 year old laptop whose motherboard was fried. The man there is very nice and honest about fees and estimated life of the laptop. I replaced the motherboard for a reasonable price and got it back fairly quickly. Unfortunately, my computer crapped out on me again within the month. I brought it back to fix, since the new motherboard was still under warranty, but it wouldn't malfunction under the watchful eye of the repairman (just my luck). I left it there for a few days, and on the last day that I called, the repairman found it to malfunction and immediately put in an order for a new motherboard, free of charge. Throughout the whole process he was very accommodating and kind. Overall, great service (he even cleaned out my fan - really really gross and dusty, and wiped down my screen and keyboard - which he does for all customers free of charge, just as a nice service), but I take off a star because I can't overlook that I was initially given a malfunctioning motherboard. Maybe more visits in the future with consistently great service will change it to 5 stars! read more

Mysteriously broke one of the hinges on my 4 year old IBM Thinkpad T43. Called a few places and got quotes around $175-200 to repair it (meaning order a new hinge and replace it). Turnaround was estimated to be between 3-10 days. Then called Professional Geeks. They told me they had spare IBM Thinkpad hinges in stock. Cost? $100. Turnaround? One hour. So I biked down, dropped it off, grabbed some lunch, and it was ready within 45 minutes. Excellent service and very friendly. I'll be coming back if I need any more laptop help. read more

Blue screen of death and worse -- black screen with high pitched screaming, not from me but from the machine. Grant fixed everything, upgraded the performance on video and audio, tweaked my drives and provided a tutorial. It seems that the HP corporation sold me a lot of extra components that actually drag down the performance. I've brought my laptops and desktop to him for repair and upgrading over the past two years. Grant knows what he's doing, works fast, takes pleasure in the work and also will explain anything you want. He's a great person to have on my side. When it's time to buy a new computer I'll have him build it -- it will be cheaper, custom to my specs, trimmed and tweaked and better than anything on the corporate market. read more

I had a simple problem with an external hard drive, regardless of the simplicity the man at P.G. was very patient and clear in explaining to me the problem and what he would do in order to clear the drive and format it properly. It was fixed within 3 hours. When I went to pick it up the next day, he knew exactly who I was and again explained what he'd done. Very simple and clear-cut, but the kind of service and professionalism that would lead me to return if I had other computer problems. Got an old IBM rack server repaired. The person seemed pretty knowledgeable and was able to figure out the issue(s), and got the server working. I was impressed. My only nitpick is, for the costs involved, while fair, I am wondering if I should have just gone with a new server machine instead --- perhaps some advice to this effect would have been handy. read more

Is it possible to give this business a zero star rating? I would absolutely not recommend this repair shop. Grant fixed my cracked LCD screen a few weeks ago. The price was expensive (around $20-30 more than other repair shops), but I was happy to get it fixed and in working condition. Yesterday I opened up my computer, and the screen was not working. I Googled the issue, and it seems like there is another LCD screen crack, this time entirely not my fault. I took the laptop to Grant early this morning for him to repair the screen as it is still under month-long warranty. Rather than take a look at the laptop, he immediately accused me of lying to him and causing the damage myself. He also told me to go fuck myself in those words exactly. Based on reviews on this site, it looks like I am not the only person to have experienced Grant's unprofessional behavior. An LCD screen should not crack a few weeks after being installed without the infliction of physical damage to the laptop. It seems like Grant installed a defective LCD screen in my laptop (possibly from an old computer, etc) and cut corners on the original repair. Now I'll have to pay another $150 for a repair that should have been done effectively in the first place. Please don't repeat my mistake of coming to this repair shop. read more

Although we probably won't proceed with the repair (probably not worth the cost), his price was reasonable in light of the circumstances,and the $60 I spent to diagnose it seemed fair (and he said he'd credit the $60 towards the purchase of a new/refurbished computer from him if we left the old one behind). Very impressed with Grant's ability to retrieve all my "lost data" from my lap top. He was quick, and when I arrived to pick it up, he offered to re-install several of my lost programs for free, and shared some valuable computer pointers. He also recommended and downloaded a new anti-virus. Priceless for a not-so-savy computer person as myself. The best part was the VERY fair price. *NOT A REVIEW ON THE WORK- JUST THE CUSTOMER SERVICE* I called in to Professional Geeks to try and see if they would be able to work on my computer. I explained the problem and then asked if they could help. I was told that they could, so I then asked for a price quote (I had let them know in the beginning of the conversation that I was trying to find a place closer that would do the same work as another company). The quote I was given was $100 more than anywhere else I had called. I know the cost for the part needed and about how much labor would cost, so I knew this price was a bit high. I mentioned the quote I had from another place and immediately the person on the phone said "Well, go there then." And then he said goodbye and hung up the phone on me. I know sometimes people can be rude when they have computer problems, but let me assure you that I was not rude in talking to him (it's not anyone else's fault that my computer's broken- why take it out on them). To me, his rudeness was completey out of nowhere and actually took me by surprise. as someone who reads the 'idiot' series for it anything computer related, i recently called professional geeks because i thought my laptop required more space (hard drive) given the messages appearing on my desktop. i provided all the info asked regarding my laptop and more. grant was pushing for the more expense part and i was told labor was $150. i thanked him and said i would think about it since it meant $380 total (part + labor). then i called the next multi-star shop on yelp list, AngelTronics. Daniel asked me the same questions and told me i didn't need to buy any additional hard drive, and if i did while the quote for the part was the same, installation would be $35! he also offered if i came by with my laptop and external drive, he would show me how i could save space so that i didn't need to purchase the additional part. by the way, microcenter charges for a hard drive Upgrade/Install $39.99 to $49.99. both quotes are far below the $150 quoted by Grant. i rest my case. read more

So, after this rave review, the circuit they'd soldered together with a new component blew out after about 6 months. Like, I heard a pop and could smell burning, and then the power plug didn't work anymore. This time I repaired it myself by buying a whole new circuit rather than just soldering in the necessary component. Upon opening the computer, it looked like the soldering job was pretty mediocre at best. The computer now works okay (after my repair). But I'd already ended up buying a new one while I waited for the circuit to arrive. The old computer is just a backup now. So, Professional Geeks was a waste of money, considering that the repair only lasted about 6 months. read more

This guy is fantastic! My USB drive broke and was no longer recognized by my computer. I panicked as years of hard work could be lost forever. I called several data recovery services and they all said it would take 5-7 days to fix, couldn't guarantee if they could recover all my files and their costs were astronomical. They dropped what they were doing and fixed my computer on the spot. It was quick and easy fix, but I couldn't have done it on my own. He is a genius at what he does, he is sensitive to what you need and want, he is committed to solving your issues and he really cares that you are happy with his work -- plus, he is super-friendly and nice. I had a virus and Professional Geeks tried to tell me i needed a new hard drive and it would cost $400.00. I pretended that I didn't know anything about computers but have had virus/spyware issues in the past and NEVER have I needed a new hard drive. So, I took my laptop to the guys down at Wichita PC Solutions and they fixed it for less than 70 bucks. I will NEVER buy another computer from Best Buy again.
