Nice guys who are plenty smart, but they do not have an adequate repair bench for complex computer problems, and they don't do a great job of listening to customers. Additionally, they are not diligent enough in diagnosis. The result in my case was that I paid them $50 diagnostic fee without actually receiving a diagnostic and with them asking me to buy RAM so they could test out my computer with new RAM (because they didn't have sufficient parts on hand). I would go to this shop to buy a PC or for basic support. I would not go to this shop for support on truly complex PC problems. I brought in a home-built PC with stability issues. I didn't have the time or interchangable parts to diagnose the PC myself, but needed it diagnosed and fixed as I used it for statistical analysis work. I ran the guy who checked me in through the steps I had taken (chkdisk and related), but he did not take adequate notes at check in. As a result, they held on to my computer for two weeks running the same checks. As I found this out, I informed the other guy who ran diagnosis on the computer I had completed all these checks. At this point, he insisted I needed to buy RAM so the computer shop could evaluate the issue with new RAM. This is a very strange request. Any shop worth it's own salt should have the interchangable parts and testing bench necessary to diagnose things without requiring the customer buy parts for the shop to do so. As he had been telling me inaccuracies about my hardware such as (1) MB can't handle the RAM I have in it because it is wrong speed (MB can handle it, it just has to be set to OC in bios) and (2) that my RAM was only 16 gb (wrong, it is clearly 4 sticks of 8 gb per stick), I decided to take the computer to a big box tech store nearby (who also failed to diagnose correctly). Upon pickup, the guys at the shop told me they believed I had a failed graphics card and RAM issue. I ended up doing the diagnosis myself a month later when my time freed up and figured out that I had (1) a corrupt windows install, and (2) a corrupted bios that was causing very strange MB behavior. I replaced no parts, just did a clean bios flash and a clean install of Windows. I am writing this review on the exact same PC, same parts, completely stable. However, I am sore that I paid $50 bucks and lost my home desktop for several weeks for nothing, and that I then solved the issue in about 2 days of my own work. read more

So my computer started emitting bloodcurdling banshee screams when I plugged in my HDMI cable, which would be okay if I were watching some reality TV show featuring banshees, but I wasn't. Plus, maybe a year ago, I spilled water on my keyboard while Skyping with a girl; when she suggested I grab a paper towel, I reassured her it was no big deal, and then my E, R, U, W, and Q keys stopped working. I've gotten pretty good in that year at typing with the on-screen keyboard in conjunction with the physical keyboard, but it actually makes me slower when using any keyboard but my own since I pause for a second whenever I need one of those letters. So I figured maybe the banshees were trying to tell me to get my computer fixed already. So I called this place. Kyle, whose name I thought was Carl every single time I spoke with him on the phone because I assumed he had a heavy Boston accent -- which he doesn't -- told me I could bring the thing in for a free estimate. So I did. He said they'd need to replace the motherboard, too, which I kind of suspected, and it was expensive, which I also expected, but it would fix the problem with my USB ports too (which I didn't mention above). He also told me he'd never seen a computer so "chewed up." Perhaps the banshees have a culinary hankering for plastic. The price they quoted was a bit outside of my range, but they worked with me to get something within my budget. Plus I got a cool little deal voucher thing on Yelp, which helped. I recommend calling them first to be clear on how it works with your repair or whatever. Anyway. It took forever for them to fix it. Like, a couple weeks. Which is a long time for someone like me, who Skypes with girls and probably doesn't interact too often with people in real life, to go without a computer. Luckily I had my trusty smartphone. And a tablet. So I survived. It took so long because the motherboard didn't arrive forever, probably because my computer is huge despite being a laptop and required a special oversized FedEx truck to transport it from California or whatever exotic point it was coming from. Once the motherboard arrived, which it did last Thursday (I think) at 3 pm, it took Kyle less than 18 hours to get the whole shebang fixed up and ready to go, and he probably slept some time in there. Though he does have that geeky air that good-natured people with IQs too high for their own good have, and it wouldn't surprise me if he spend most of his nights programming PlayStations to guide space shuttles -- or something like that -- while normal people are sleeping. When I picked up my computer, Kyle told me that he'd just cleared an "army of dust bunnies" out of it, too, and helpfully pointed to one attempting to hide under a nearby shelf. I felt momentarily like I should squash it with a shoe or a newspaper or something, before remembering that dust bunnies aren't really alive, and if they were they probably wouldn't have the militaristic tendencies Kyle was suggesting, and in any case it wouldn't be my place. He then suggested my roommate's cats were somehow in league with the dust bunnies, so it's probably for the best I didn't stomp the one I saw, since I'm pretty sure my roommate's cats are just looking for an excuse to implement all the diabolic plans they've been ruminating on since I told Benny not to eat my houseplant. So. Yes! This is a good place to take your computer, they are friendly and competent, and their prices are very fair. Also, Kyle gave me his business card and told me he really wanted a positive review mentioning his name on Yelp, and it's a good thing he did, too, because otherwise I'd be calling him Carl right now and he'd probably be sad. read more

I have an old laptop that had, in true PC form, slowly stopped working (stopped being able to connect to wireless internet, started taking several minutes to boot, stopped being able to save and/or access various files, etc. It had basically been turned into a paperweight. I initially went to A Plus Computer Services because it was offering a Yelp coupon ($40 for $80 of work, I think). I brought in the computer the staff couldn't have been more polite or helpful. They looked at the computer with me, gave me a prognosis (though they explained that a more thorough diagnosis would be performed) and explained what work they would be doing. They had to wipe my hard drive and re-install Windows, and they saved all my files. When I turned on the computer after I brought it home, I could hardly tell Windows had been deleted and reinstalled! Everything worked perfectly, and all the files I had on my computer were restored exactly as I had left them. Additionally, the tech mentioned that Windows Vista is a less than ideal OS and that it requires an unusually large amount of memory to run effectively. To that end, he installed extra memory on my computer for FREE. I would without hesitancy take any computer back to the shop for service and recommend it to anyone and everyone. read more

I got my laptop keyboard replaced here about 4 months ago, so this review is long overdue. I would definitely get my laptop serviced here again. They are very fair in their pricing and replaced my laptop keyboard at almost the cost of the part. I think they only charged me $20-25 for labor. They gave me free estimate on the job before starting on the repair. And they kept me updated on the status of my laptop (called me when the parts came in, etc). There's no pressure to get repair done after the estimate. Very friendly and professional staff. Parking is not an issue - always a few spots on the street. They do very good work, but as the saying goes: "If you want it done cheap and well, it's not going to be fast." Drop off your laptop here if you are not going to need it for a week. I got a call around 11 AM telling me it was simply a bum power cord. They charged me around $40 for the cord. I've bought a couple of used computers from them over the last 6 years. One pc laptop and a MacBook Pro. When I bought the Mac (1.5 yrs ago) I honestly was concerned about the price and the fact that it was used but I needed it for my job b/c it's better to have a mac than pc. It worked flawlessly and the sales rep gave me a little tutorial on how to use it even though I've never owned one before. I had the Mac for about a year and a half and I dropped it and it would not turn on. I tried everything to restore it but kept getting the "grey screen of death". I bought it the Apple store and they wouldn't fix it b/c it was "too old" they referred me to Micro Center. They said they could fix it and re-install the hard drive. A few days later they said they couldn't fix it and it wasn't the hard drive but the "brains of the Mac was damaged not allowing the hard drive to be re-installed. I had a hunch A Plus could do it so I bought it back to them and a few days later it was fixed! They only charged me $250 and Micro center told me it would have costed me $600 + dollars. I don't know what happened over the years, but this place IS NOT THAT GREAT anymore. I sent my brother's laptop to get it fixed and I paid close to $300 for it to do so. Labor charge was around $65 and I thought it would be worth it if they fixed the computer, but I was wrong. The power jack was not working so it cost about $80 to fix it, and was supposed to fix the problem that it was not charging correctly, but this was not the case. A week later, you have to really jerk the power cord in all different angles just so it can charge. So much for a permanent fix. Also, there was some problems where the cords around the charging port had to be replaced. but somehow in the process the sound stopped working so that had to be fixed. The sound worked completely fine before I brought it in and I had paid for them to fix a problem that somehow came up with the installation to fix other problems. I should have not had to pay for it to be fixed. Then, I got a call from the owner complaining to me that what I did (complained) was not that nice and how I should be grateful they honored the coupon I redeemed on Yelp, but they had to anyways. Ughhh. So many better computer repair places in Boston. I heard the one in Beacon Hill or by Govt Center is a lot better and less hassle. I am just gonna delete this experience from my memory and not deal with them anymore. Def not worth my anger and time anymore. read more

The screen on my laptop went crazy and had to be held at a certain angle in order to see it. I brought it in to A Plus on Friday. Within 24 hours they called with a diagnosis and a quote. I needed a new screen. For under $200 they could get the new screen, ship it, put it on, and test it. Sounded good to me since the screen alone is $125. I was told I'd have the computer back in about a week. Imagine my surprise when I received a call on Tuesday saying it was done and I could come get it whenever I wanted. I was beyond psyched! I spilled a huge nalgene bottle of water all over my macbook pro this past weekend and was trying desperately to save it, when I stumbled upon A Plus Computer Services. I had considered everything, sending it in to a sketchy repair website, sending it in to apple to fix for $775, and buying a new laptop. All of the computer repair places (including the Apple Store) told me that my computer was a goner and that I should just buy a new one. I am now typing up this review on the laptop that was supposed to have been a goner. These guys offered to diagnose it (for free!) and gave me a super reasonable estimate of what it would cost. Hearing that, I got hooked. After I gave them my laptop, they fixed it for a 1/4 of the price of a new macbook!!! They were so nice too, answering all of my questions and calling me about the diagnosis immediately. They fixed it within ONE DAY of my giving the green light to repair it (for this price, who wouldn't?!). I also mentioned how I was struggling without my laptop while at the store and they even lent me a laptop and charger to hold me over until my laptop was fixed (FOR FREE)!! And when I said I needed Microsoft Word, they installed it before lending me the loaner laptop. Spectacularly good service. I called A Plus yesterday with services needed month's ago...I have a desktop and laptop that needed repair for some time now. My desktop more than anything, since I just started up my classes this fall semsester. Gentleman on the phone was very nice and helpful when I made my initial first call, he answered all my questions...did not rush me off the phone at all!!! I then decided to take my equipment there for service. I dropped it off around the time they open10ish. I then recieved a call telling me what was actually wrong, what needed to be done and for how much around 1ish. (another great pleasant covo over phone) I went ahead and approved all services needed! I recieved another call around 5:20pm that my desktop and laptop were ready for PICKUP!!! WOW SAME DAY SERVICE??? You cant ask for more!!!! This little shop is a life saver! I was hesitant to send my HP tower outside the home to get repaired. Last year, I used a home visit company that did nothing to resolve the problem, so my computer was left dormant for a year. I chose this shop because of their Yelp reviews and deal, and I'm glad I did. I brought them a Mac laptop that needed a connection soldered onto the logic board, and they did a careful job -- and then when I broke it again, they found another circuit to solder it to and did the repair again. Their communication was great and they were great at getting it done and back to me as soon as possible. No attempt to upsell me to something I didn't want, and their repair charge was very fair. They also have new and reconditioned hardware at what seem to be competitive prices. I will definitely come back when I need a hardware upgrade or repairs in the future. read more

I've never had to bring a computer to a shop before & was nervous that the problem couldn't be fixed or that I would be overcharged. Initially I called the shop & was able to speak to someone about the problem that I was having w/ my computer. Thumbs up! Had a Groupon - had been very frustrated for months due to very very slow downloading on laptop. A Plus did a tune-up but said it could be internet provider problem. After a 2nd trip back to A Plus when I called to say still slow download they once again checked everything out & said appears to be internet provider issue as computer worked well at shop. The interaction(s) with Comcast weren't as pleasant & took much longer for Comcast to acknowledge & resolve - bottom line is that A Plus did not charge me for things I didn't need & told me on the first visit to shop it was/could be the service provider who needed to make the fixes ( & it was - a different frequency channel was given to me & now my interference from other neighbors is a thing of the past.) The staff is friendly and efficient. I have used their services two times and they have always responded promptly. They are skilled and take the time to explain you in detail their work, which is a very positive aspect. Moreover, they allowed me to watch them while they were doing the job, so I could become informed about the type and extent of the problem. During my two visits, they temporarily fixed my laptop by installing pieces of their own while the original pieces arrived. This was very helpful as allowed me to continue working with my computer. I'm glad that they helped me in that way. For a person like me who uses a computer on a daily basis, it was really important to receive that kind of support so I could uninterruptedly continue my work. Although I do not live near to their location, the travel is worth it. It is also my understanding that they charge prices that are comparative lower.
