Dropped computer off for repair and was told they would call in a day or 2 with diagnosis and repair estimate. They never called so I called to inquire. Left messages with no return calls. When I got through the answer was I needed a new motherboard. Estimate for repair was more than a new computer. Cost me $45 and a lot of grief to find out I needed a new computer. Customer service needs improvement. I'll go somewhere else the next time and recommend the same for others. read more

All the USB ports on my machine stopped working with my mice. I took the computer to CTS Computer and asked them to fix all USB ports so that they work with everything. They accepted, days later they notified me it was ready, it was picked up, they billed at pickup, and when I set it back up I find that there are still USB ports that do not work with my mouse. I call CTS Computer, and they intentionally chose not to repair certain USB ports. They argued they "didn't want to mess with someone else's handiwork," thinking that someone else had installed some of the USB ports on my computer. I reminded them they built it & installed everything on it & I told them I have not had it serviced by anyone else, they "checked their records," I was right, they apologized, and told me to bring it back. So I asked them to recognize that there were multiple failures here, not just the incomplete repair. The job they accepted was to repair all USB ports. They not only didn't do that, they also didn't communicate to me their intentions to change the parameters of the job at all. They just took my money. My computer is my life; I work from home on it AND it's my source of entertainment. Every day without it is a day I cannot put food on the table. I expressed this concern to them as well -- it's not as simple as "just bringing it back": They already had the opportunity to execute the full repair and THEY chose not to after accepting it and without informing me of the change in plans. They were completely unsympathetic. The correct maneuver at that point, seeing as this was a mistake entirely of their own intentional making AND that they failed to communicate at multiple opportunities -- They could've informed me of the modified repair when they made that decision or when billing, they did neither -- Was nothing less than a rush order free after hours house call to fix their mistake. Every workday I am without my computer is a day I cannot work. Every time I have to take it to them and back time and energy are spent to do so. They already had the opportunity, they chose not to take it, failed to communicate the change in plan to me, and now expected me to invest at least another day not being able to work as well as the time and energy to take it to them and back for them to make up for their own colossal fumble. No, sir, absolutely not. How could any honest business possibly CHOOSE to so thoroughly screw the pooch and then expect the customer to pay for it? Unacceptable. I eventually gave up and just e-mailed them for a partial refund in acknowledgment of the incomplete repair. CTS Computer even debated that, refusing to ever accept that the repair is incomplete despite the fact that there are USB ports on this machine that do not work with mice and the requested repair was to make every USB port work with every device. They denied the refund, writing that it would be their last e-mail. Despite that, days later I got another e-mail offering me a partial refund. I requested the justification for the figure offered. They never replied again. To make matters worse, since a little after I got it back I'm constantly -- multiple times a minute -- getting spammed by a notification that there's something wrong with a USB port, even though I haven't had additional issues with the USB ports they DID fix. Again -- multiple times per minute. Do not take your business here. The catastrophic failures in communication are among the worst I have ever experienced. CTS Computer wouldn't even tell me if it's store policy not to touch others' handiwork (god forbid they apologize for their colossal communication blunder), so there's no way to trust this won't happen again! It seems to me that anyone can take their computer in to CTS Computer, request a repair, they'll do more or less whatever they want, not tell you if it is or isn't what you asked for, bill you, leave you to figure it out on your own, and then refuse to accept the reality of what they've just done and refuse you a partial refund. That is all you CAN count on here. I can't help but assume that all the positive reviews are from people who have not bothered to try other places and just think that what they're getting here is the best they're going to get. The folks at CTS are obviously knowledgeable about computers, so it's easy to be impressed at first -- Heck, I'm a longtime customer and I was at first, they even built my PC -- Their problem is with literally every other aspect of running a business. read more

My 80+-year-old mother fell for a "Call-Microsoft-Support" scam and gave the scammers remote access to her computer. I called an old friend/AI professional in Massachusetts for advice, and he recommended CTS. I couldn't be happier. Both times that I called, CTS picked up immediately. They understood exactly what we needed (to remove viruses/malware), and they made it easy to arrange a contactless drive-up/drop-off. My mother left her desktop tower with them yesterday. She picked it up today. The computer is now virus free, and the cost of getting it to that point ($120) was significantly less than what the scammers could have stolen (but thankfully didn't!). I am so relieved that my mother can safely use her computer again. I can't believe how quickly we got the breach resolved. All thanks to having found CTS. I highly recommend them. read more

I went here because I needed a few different screws for my computer & computer case and they didn't have the screws at the hardware store. The guy working here said he would check and he spent like ten minutes going through his screws and he finally found the ones I needed. I brought my laptop to CTS on a recommendation from a co-worker. That was over 10 years ago. I will not go anywhere else and now refer them to anyone who needs computer service. I have also purchased my laptops from them when I need to upgrade. Don't trust all the positive reviews, this is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Here's some background of my situation: - built a PC 6 years ago - it had been making some noises - the power supply smelled like a part had burned out - it no longer would boot up I go to drop it off Thursday morning, am dismissed when I try to explain the situation, and am told to just drop it off so they can do a diagnostic and get back to me. No expectations of fees or turnaround time, which in hindsight I should have asked about. I call back Friday afternoon, they still haven't done a diagnostic, and say they'll have to keep it over the weekend. After not hearing anything for some time, I call back on Tuesday afternoon and am told they'd get back to me. When I hear back, they tell me the motherboard is dead and will need to be replaced, no mention of the power supply. They blamed me for having built the computer "all wrong" despite it working for 6 years and said it took so long to diagnose because they had to test every part. They were going to charge me about $250 for parts and labor and I said I'd think about it. After checking with IT professionals I know they said this place seems dishonest, that it shouldn't take so long to do a diagnostic, and their assessment didn't make sense. I plan to take my computer elsewhere but am told that if they're going to reassemble my computer and return it I first have to pay some diagnostic fee that I wasn't told about before, saying I should have seen the sign or asked about the fee (that I didn't know about and which isn't noted on their website). I've checked online to find that a handful of places nearby do free diagnostics (1-2 hours) and on average have same-day turnaround times. This place doesn't set expectations, takes a long time, doesn't provide updates unless prompted repeatedly, blames you for what's wrong with your computer, makes excuses, and will charge you fees that weren't previously discussed. Quick, cost effective and very focused service. This team quickly diagnosed my Dell Studio Laptop issue and delivered a fully functional laptop back to me in less than 48 hours. My laptop wasn't booting. They replaced the problem drive and imaged my old drive to the new one (so I lost no data and very little time.) Was sent to CTS Computer in Newton by my movers who broke a projector as the direct-bill place that would fix it at their cost. I called in advance to make arrangements to drop it off, and the person who answered the phone was incredibly rude in insisting they don't repair projectors. Which is odd since my moving company said they spoke with them and even tried to make arrangements to pick it up from me and have it dropped off there, but had to wait because they were closed for a week in early August. To be clear, I don't care that they don't work on projectors - that's fine. But the person who answered the phone (I didn't get their name) should NOT speak to ANY prospective customer like he spoke to me, and should NOT have hung up on me when I was mid sentence asking a question. I'd never bring any business to them as a result of this, and urge anyone who values customer service and being treated like a human being to avoid them like the plague, or COVID. read more

Beware. When they get it right, they're good - they built a tower for me a while back. But.. when they get it wrong, their customer service is horrible. I brought in a MacBook to have the CD/DVD drive replaced. I got it back with a CD-only drive. When I asked them to get it right it they said "we'll have to order the part, it will take 2 weeks" - to which I said, pull the one they put in, and I'll take it elsewhere. They had the nerve to try to charge for the labor - when I said no way, they said, "ok, but we don't want your business anymore." My response - fine by me, you lost my business when you tried to charge me for your mistake. Dumb. I had been doing a reasonable amount of business with them, and I had been recommending them. FYI, for Mac repairs, Computer Loft in Allston is the best. MicroCenter on Mem. drive is pretty good as well. read more

I won't get into the technical details of our experience with CTS, I'll only comment on the customer service experience. The way the computer repair went down at this place left some questions in our mind (brought the computer and it was working when attached to a monitor, after bringing it there, it stopped working... they said it was the motherboard). I didn't have many problems with the technical explanation, but given the fact that it worked before, and after it did not, I needed some clarification. I could not get a word in! I was just trying to ask some questions, and I could not get three words into my question without being interrupted and talked over. I asked this manager repeatedly if he could let me finish my question, and he told me (verbatim) that he had let me finish twice but I said the same thing. Therefore, he saw no need to let me ask my questions. I told him that, if I asked the same thing 15 times, it should be okay. No? I'm the customer, and since computers are expensive, I should feel comfortable with the explanation I'm getting...especially if I need to buy a new computer! He told me I could go waste my time somewhere else and hung up on me. Shining example of customer service! So, basically, I'm sure this place might be fine for repairs, but don't ask questions. read more

I had Dan at CTS build a computer to order for me and am delighted with the results. In particular, I wanted to specify the number and type of USB ports, memory, CPU, and hard drive. I also wanted to specify video output and have a 1 Tb drive from my older computer put in the new desktop box. Dan did a superb job at a price lower than what I would have needed to pay Compu Center on an online vendor for similar service. About 18 months ago, I had a problem with my laptop--the power cord wouldn't power/charge it (which I gather is a frequent problem with certain laptop). CTS Computer fixed it fast and inexpensively, and for all these months it's been fine. Then the problem came back just when I had to teach a seminar on Zoom! I took it over, and this time I bought a new computer from them so I could deliver my class. They moved ALL my files over to the new laptop, my course went great, and they fixed and returned my old computer, too! Fast, painless and less costly than I expected! After a severe hard drive crash, I took my laptop to Best Buy. They were unable to retrieve any of my data because it was in such bad condition. The only option was to send it out which would cost $500-$1600. I took my laptop to CTS for a last ditch effort. They were able to recover my data for next to nothing compared to Best Buy's quote (only $215!). They were so helpful, and it was such a quick turnaround. I am so thankful! read more

This is my second time using CTS and both times I have been amazed by how fast and cheap they were able to get the job done (both times within 3-4 hours). I was there two years ago due to a hard drive failure from my company's internal server. It was time for a new rig and I was sent there by the store (Oramac Computer's in Watertown) that was recovering the data from the failed drive to get a new computer. I was so happy he recommended them because they put together a brand new server for me within a few hours and installed the O/S on it as well. All I had to do was copy over the recovered data, configure the system, and we were back online. The cost for the data recovery from Oramac and the new rig from CTS was extremely affordable and both places provided excellent customer service. Two years later (this past Friday), I was cleaning out this very server due to dust and sure enough, I dropped it no more than three inches. I go to turn it back on and... NO - HARDWARE FAILURE! The drive is clicking/beeping and I know that is a very bad sign. Once again, I'm practically in tears knowing that I might have just lost all of our data from the last time we backed up (which would have been a days worth of database changes). This time, I was a bit more calm since I knew between Oramac and CTS, I have two companies that are going to help me out in a time of crisis. I went to Oramac as soon as they opened on Saturday and the owner was just as nice as the last time around. Unfortunately for me, this time he could not recover the drive. He still recommends I go to CTS to start getting the new drive, a RAID set up this time (you think I would have learned my lesson two years ago and have done this - not sure why I didn't?), and then maybe go to Tech Fusion in Cambridge for the drive recovery. Tech Fusion would be a last resort due to how extremely expensive they are so I wanted to hold off until talking to CTS. I walk into CTS and see the young lady I spoke with two years ago who I'm assuming is one of the owners (I recognized her because honestly, she's very easy on the eyes ;) ). I explained the situation, that I needed two new drives, a RAID card installed, and the O/S installed. I explained I didn't have luck getting the drive recovered and she says "We do data recovery here!". I was like "Come again?". "Yes, we do data recovery here. Leave your drive and we will look into it.". I explained I had no luck with Oramac (who I have had great luck with in the past), but she says to leave it anyways. I leave and cross my fingers... I get a call less than two hours later "Hi Adam, I have great news. We were able to recover your ENTIRE DRIVE! We are going to ghost it over to the new drive and set up the RAID. It will be ready within another hour or so.". I couldn't believe it - are you kidding me?!? You honestly just saved my entire weekend?!? I gave her a virtual hug and kiss through the phone and practically jumped in the air with excitement. I go to pick up the server, paid the bill (which I had to take a double take as to how cheap it was - the data recovery was AT LEAST less than a 1/4 of what it would have cost elsewhere), and went to my office to turn the server back on. I turned it back on and couldn't believe my eyes - it turned back on as if nothing ever went wrong. All of the files were there, all of the database changes were in tact, and I didn't have to spend countless hours trying to rebuild the database rows from the backup and my memory of the changes that were made since the last backup. I had to call CTS from the office to let them know how happy they made me. If anyone has read through this entire review, just know that Watertown/ Newton area has at least two computer shops owned by small business owners that are better than any of the chain stores in the area when it comes to price and customer service for hard drive recovery and computer parts/ prices. CTS is one of them, and Oramac is the other - support these two places because they clearly deserve it. I thank both of these companies and the owners that run them, graciously. CTS is fantastic, I have been going there for about 7 years now after getting a very good recommendation from my uncle. I am pretty good with software but not hardware so I have them put all my computers together and my server and they fix any problems I have with them. In the rare instances I have had software issues, they have solved those too. They are very reasonable price-wise and are very good at explaining what the problem was, what caused it, and how they fixed it. I called this place to have my MAC fixed that was crashing randomly. I was in school at the time and was working on projects that were time sensitive and asked if they could take a look at it, they said sure for $45 we can diagnosis it by tomorrow and then we will call you to see if you want us to repair whatever was wrong. They never called I had to call them back and it hadnt even been looked at yet. Then the next day when I called to see if they had figured out what was wrong with it, they said it all fixed they upgraded the OS and it will be $90. I was ok with that and went over and picked it up. This place is in my neighborhood so I was home with it in 5 minutes to try to rush thru my projects for school. Within a few minutes of using it it crashed then again and again so I literally was back to them in 30 minutes saying the problem wasn't fixed and this now was Saturday morning. When I called the guy said sorry the tech that worked on it wasn't there but they would have him call me first thing Monday. That never happened...I tried calling again, nothing emailed no response...sent a message to their website...no response...At this point I would never suggest this service to anyone...worst customer experience I have ever had and complete waste of money and I missed my school deadline and my MAC is worse then before. It's really hard to believe that no one even bothered to get back to me!! read more
