To be fair, we didn't even try the food, but the experience was a huge letdown...... I googled "Romantic places, St. Augustine" and Michael's came up 1st.....said it was a Tapas place, thought, perfect date night - light bites, a little wine.....exactly what I was looking for.... Found the place, forgot how crowded that side of town gets with tourists, and searched in vain for 20 minutes for a parking spot (we usually park on the other side, at Casa Monica, when we go to the Historic District) before settling on a city lot that was triple what Casa Monica charges.... We get there, and are seated....not at all romantic....kinda dingy plain white walled room with a window view of.......the parking lot.......So we wait, and wait, and wait....a good 5 minutes before a waitress with a bull ring in her nose (sorry, couldn't help staring...how does that not hurt like hell, and who on earth thinks it looks good?) comes by to give us water.... While we waited - looked at the menu - no dinner plates were under $30 (and no explanation - dinner size? tapas size?) and nothing looked good. Walked out and went for calzones and wings at Al's.....Next time, sticking to my comfort zone....park at Casa Monica, and go to Cellar 6 for the really cool vibe we hoped Michael's could meet or exceed.... read more

In town for one night and I was not sure what kind of food I was in the mood for. Tapas seemed like a good choice since we could share a few dishes since I was in a picky mood that night. I just came into town from a visit in Asheville NC where I had tapas which were unbelievable so my expectations was a little high. Hope the Tasting Room will be as good since all the reviews all seemed very good. We arrived at the restaurant and saw their adorable courtyard area. Even though they had great table reserved for us inside, I decided to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and romantic ambiance. Everything on the menu "sounded really good" and they offer plenty of variety. We ended up ordering: CHAMPIÑONES al JEREZ (sauteed mushrooms with garlic herbs and sherry) CHORIZO al VINO (chorizo sausage with red wine and onions) BABY OCTOPUS MEJILLONES (mussels covered with french fries) Remember I said it "sounded really good" but after eating I had mixed feelings about the place. 5 stars for atmosphere. So gorgeous inside and out. We went with the outside seating as it was early evening and just a gorgeous day out. The porch has so much charm, it's relaxing and romantic. Such a lovely place to grab dinner and catch up or veg out. WOW wine selection! However, we knew we were going to be drinking throughout the evening so we went with a pitcher of white sangria, a personal favorite of mine. It was crisp and refreshing. It lacked in fruit pieces but the flavor was delicious. We had about 6-8 glasses from the pitcher, great deal! The entire menu was screaming my name, good thing it was tapas style. We each chose some and shared. I had one of the best dining experiences here I've had in a long time. I was seated quickly, though I came early. If you are coming with friends and want couches to listen to music you need to make a reservation, they go quickly. It can be loud inside. I sat on the patio and still could hear, the music was really nice. My server Brittany greeted me quickly. She was amazing, she knew the menu well, paired my wines perfectly, and had very good selections for me. When I am feeling adventurous when traveling and I feel I can trust my server or chef I do not order from the menu. I simply ask them to surprise me. There is nothing I will not taste and I enjoy most foods. When Brittany asked what I liked, I just said "Everything" The only thing I wish was different, was that I had been traveling with others. The menu is extensive and varied, there is something for everyone here; I wish I could have shared and tasted more things. I was first asked what I would like to drink so a chose, "Bubbles Around the World", three sparkling wines. Dry Champagnes for me are so versatile and I thought this would be a nice setup to begin the evening. I asked Brittany to surprise me for my first Tapa. She seemed unsure at first, but quickly warmed to the idea when I assured her I like most foods and to just pair something for the flight of Bruts I ordered. She did perfectly. The first things I had were a Moroccan spiced tuna and a ceviche of shrimp & bay scallops over escarole garnished w/ crispy fried plantain strips. The tuna loin was perfect, the crust was spicy, but not overpowering. The ceviche had plenty of veg without too much onion or lime; the shrimp were cured to perfection and not at all rubbery, the scallops tasted very fresh and felt elegant and smooth on my palate. The plantains made the dish fun and playful, they were delicious with a hint of sea salt. The J Cuvee 20 brut was crisp and the citrus was perfect overall for this dish. The Blue Top Brut's subtle caramel and light fruit were ideal with the ceviche. The currants in the Brut Rose were best with the tuna, though this was a new wine for me and I found it refreshing and silky without being too sweet. The next Tapa Brittany brought out for me was a roulade of braised duckling and Manchego, lightly fried and served with fluffy basmati rice, black bean puree & Sriracha. I enjoy my duck breast mid-rare at most and the temperature of this was perfect, and it wasn't overly fatty; the salty Manchego was the ideal accompaniment in this crispy roulade.The Brut Rose was superb with this dish. Next I had a solomillo de pulmon lightly coated in a chimichuri and resting on a chucky persillade. This cut of meat is so rare to find in a restaurant, what a treat. Slow cooked without any connective tissue and so full of flavor, one of the nicest tasting pieces of meat I have had in some time. Simple and still so sublime, I recommend it. Again Brittany hit a home run with the pairings, bringing The Three Kings of Spain to accompany this sweet meat; they ran the gamut from dark rich fruit w/ a dry finish, to subtle oak flavors long on my palate, & finally vanilla, cherry, and herbs. They were Emilio Moro, Finca Resalso, Ribera del Duero; Marques de Arvisa, Rioja; and Cellars Scala Dei, Priorat. All of the cheese plates look amazing and I'm glad I didn't have to choose. The Rioja was perfect for the Cabrales, Manchego and Cana de Cabra plate I received. Light rounds of Galacian toast were delicious and the perfect vehicles for this plate (though I had to order extra!) that was accompanied by Americana almonds, roasted fennel, roasted sweet peppers, and a sherry sweetened onion marmalade. Dessert was a chocolate truffle cake with warm vanilla cream and caramel Moroccan spiced ice cream. This was mana and would have been excellent with one of the many ports or sherries available. I just did not have room! This was a lot for a single person to taste, but I took my time and was never rushed by any of the staff. Other servers and managers came by to check my progress and to inquire as to how everything tasted. Looking at The place from the outside, it does not scream fine dining but when you walk in it's like you walked into a totally different place. The staff was very friendly and our server Eleah was very delightful and helpful. We were celebrating our 30th Anniversary and we had top notch service from the beginning to the end of our dining experience. Everything we ate was wonderfully prepared and presented. A bit of mixed feeling about the Tasting Room. I've wanted to try it for a long time. A while back, on a Saturday night, hubbo and I decided to have dinner in St. Augustine since we were at the outlet mall. It was around 9:15 PM by the time we got there, and though we knew it was a long shot without reservation, we decided to give the Tasting Room a try. As expected, they were pretty crowded. We asked how long the wait would be and the hostess said 30-45 min. Well, we didn't mind it as we wanted to walk around St. George St a bit anyway. So we put our names down, but better yet, the hostess said she would give us a call when the table is about 10 min from being ready. We never got the call and ended up eating at another restaurant. It was disappointing, but well, everyone has a bad day. So several weeks later, when our good friends wanted to try the Tasting Room and asked if we wanted to join them, we gladly accepted. We went on a Saturday night with a 7 PM reservation and got seated no problem. The restaurant is a bit small and the tables were placed very close to each other. So it was a bit cramped, but beautifully decorated. There was a very nice Spanish guitar band playing, which was a very nice surprise. We tried the ultimate experience menu, which is a set of 4-course menu instead of ordering tapas a la carte because my friend used her dinner for four groupon. The dishes were good. Nothing really wow'd me, but definitely nothing bad. But that's also the reason why I can't exactly call myself a "fan" yet. For the price and the type of establishment it is, I was expecting the food to really wow us... to hit us in the face with great flavors. But every dish, while cooked nicely, didn't quite 'get' there. The dining experience was quite nice overall. We had great company, the music was great, the atmosphere is pretty good, the food was decent, but alas something was lacking to push me over to the 'fan' edge. Maybe I was still a bit jaded by the 'no call back' incident lol? I know I'll go back and give it a try again, ordering a la carte tapas so we are not locked in the set menu. Went here when I was solo on a business trip and the food was fantastic. I ordered two tapas: chargrilled octopus and the beef tenderloin tartare. Both were fantastic and came out really quickly. The tartare was a very generous portion too! For dessert I had the vanilla flan which came with a sprinkling of candied lemon/lime peel which was an excellent touch. Only downside was that I was told they were too busy to seat me inside, a table for one, due to "reservations". Said reservations never came and I could see from my seat outside in a pea coat that only three or four tables of the maybe 12 inside were ever occupied. Sort of off putting. David my server made up for that and was very pleasant. Still would highly recommend but make sure to get a reservations because even if it is dead they might not seat you. read more

We went for an early dinner last night for our first visit. It was fantastic. Incredible wine menu and knowledgeable sommelier on staff. Our waiter was great and timed the courses perfectly and made excellent recommendations about what to try. We shared the Michael's Charcuterie Board as a starter. Loved everything on it including a prosciutto wrapped braised short rib. For main meals, we had perfectly cooked Rib eye with Truffle fries and Brussels sprouts and the short rib. Dessert was a shared chocolate torte. High backed chairs are comfortable and it is a very relaxing atmosphere inside. Would highly recommend for a date night or special occasion. I was married on Vilano Beach and had dinner in a private room at Michaels Tasting Room - it was amazing! We had 10 people and had a four course meal; everything was ridiculously good. From the cheese plate to the ahi tuna tacos; to the short rib entree, lamb and tuna entrees - everyone was raving about how delicious the food was. And the service was fantastic. We visited St. Augustine on a busy Friday night. We made reservations at Michael's via Open Table and walked to the restaurant. The host was incredible. He let us know that our table wasn't ready yet (we were early) and told us if we wanted to wait inside or outside he would come and find us when our table was ready. Our server, Sara, was astounding! She offered a few very tasty suggestions of wine, recommended some of her favorite appetizers, and described the incredible entree's. We started with the Burrata (mixed greens, basil infused tomato raisins, and grilled pesto crouton) -- which was to DIE FOR. I will be craving that Burrata from now until I go again. Sara brought us some extra pesto bread so that we didn't miss a single bite. For dinner I had the 2 beef medallions (layered with goat cheese, Basque piperade, arugula, and roasted mushrooms served with red wine jus). It was cooked to the exact temperature that I had asked for and the accompaniments were amazing. Overall we had the best experience and it was due largely to the service! Sara really listened to the types of food we liked and were craving and made some stellar suggestions. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone! read more

They had a fan blowing to keep things not so hot and humid which helped. The server was so nice and friendly. Everything was perfect, the food and the service. The 8 ounce filet and truffle fries were amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly. The fries were enough to feed four. The brussels sprouts were delicious as well. Best place we ate in St. Augustine. We were panicking, looking for reservations on Christmas Eve and were luckily enough to find an open table here. It is a decently sized restaurant, with a dining room, outdoor dining, and a smaller dining room section. It felt very intimate, and it had good ambiance with lighting and live music. The live music was a nice touch in that it wasn't super loud, so that you could still enjoy conversation at the dinner table. Our server was extremely nice (I forgot his name, but he was Swedish/Polish!). He checked on us just the right amount and was very pleasant to interact with. We ordered vegetable risotto (came with purple and green cauliflower, mushrooms, butternut squash, and arugula on top -- divine!!), hanger steak (slightly overcooked, not my favorite, came with fries so it was like their version of steak and frites), chicken fried oysters (buttermilk fried small oysters served in small cast iron pan on top of creamed kale, which tastes just like creamed spinach, very good!), panna cotta (served in mason jar with peach compote and lady fingers on the side; wish they left the lady fingers off but the panna cotta was rich and so good with the peaches) and the sea salt brownie (super rich slab of brownie with ganache on top and sea salt, good for chocolate lovers). Our party raved that this was the best food they've had all trip, and I can concur. They have 2 oz tastings of wine (great for me since I can't drink much), and apparently they have a soda maker since they made a club soda for one of us. I did not get to try the scallops arepa, but they looked very good -- about 5 large scallops sitting on top of their own little arepas. The menu seems fairly different than the ones in the Yelp pictures. They do have a small section for small plates but also for mains and salads. It seemed Spanish influenced but not heavily so. The restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside; an old simple house that could easily be overlooked. Once you step inside you are transported to a more modern and romantictic setting. We choose to have the chefs 4 course meal: lobster salad, beat soup, salmon over black rice and a goat-cheese cheesecake to finish it off. This little hide away was just what we needed after the tedious drive from Tampa. The wine is fabulous! If you go, you have to try the mussels with truffle fries. Omg, they were amazing!!! My husband wanted a cheese and meat platter which was not on the menu, however, they made him a special platter and the presentation with cherries, Serrano onions and nuts was incredible. I am not sure many who visit St Augustine know about this place but it is sure worth a visit. We had been disappointed with our first impression of St Augustine and this changed everything. Third visit to Michael's in 2 years and our dedication got the better of us. The erosion of the cooking continues and customer recognition is gone. The poached shrimp was prepared with shrimp that were not fresh, the chuleta (pork chop) was overcooked. The waiter was not very attentive and we had to call on a cook to help out. This was a special anniversary and despite asking if this was a special occasion in the reservation, no acknowledgment whatsoever. So why did they ask? None of this is acceptable for a high priced restaurant. So sad. read more

WOW... Ok - I'll elaborate. Went this past weekend for our anniversary. I don't often get to say the word perfect - but it truly was. Ordered the garlic shrimp - exceptional. It's like a mini jambalaya - without the juice. Lightly spiced (just enough to bring out all the flavor). Next was a medium Filet - cooked perfectly. I'm not a char fan and they were able to accomplish a melt in your mouth experience. Try the Parmesan Risotto and the Brussels Sprouts. Ended with a wonderful GF Chocolate Tort. Also enjoyed a wonderful bottle of wine (and I never drink wine!). Our server was Mike - he was polite, helpful and kind. Everything was super clean, distanced and well thought out. My wife and I were traveling up north to The Carolinas we searched Top Restaurants in St Augustine. Lucky for us we serendipitously stumbled onto Michael's St Augustine through that search. They had a very good extensive wine selection. The service was impeccable and warm. Their oysters Rockefeller's was superb. To our surprise my Roasted Branzino was running a little behind but did not notice. The chief came out and gave us both on the house Harvest Salads. He stated The fresh fish is taking a little longer in order properly cook and gave us the salad on the house and apologized. The Sherri balsamic vinaigrette dressing was amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection and was flaky with a lemon taste. My wife's fillet was so tender that it melted in our mouths. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. The food, atmosphere and selection was outstanding. I had the Ribeye and was the best steak that I ever had. And I've eaten at Delonico's in New Orleans and Bolo's in NYC. Plus several of the top seakhouses in Ft. Worth, Colorado, Edmonton and Hawaii. The only area for improvement is in the food servers, the waitress was great, but the ladies bringing out the food were a little dry and seemed alloof and disinterested. read more

The restaurant has nice decor and the servers were good. My husband and I had the 5 course "chef experience". The experience started great with an unusual beet, cheese and honey dish which made me like beets for the first time. Unfortunately as the courses went so did the quality of the dishes. The gnocchi and mushrooms was good. Scallop was ok and only a scallop. The filet should have been called a medallion as it was maybe 1-2 ounce with some flavorless purée and not pleasant greens. In addition, probably due to the small size, they never asked how we like our steak and it came out rare which was way undercooked for us. The dessert was supposed to be tres leches; however was a small shot glass with yellow cake and meringue on top. Fist time have have left a 5 course meal hungry before. Not sure how the regular menu is but wouldn't recommend the "chef experience" read more
