The restaurant has nice decor and the servers were good. My husband and I had the 5 course "chef experience". The experience started great with an unusual beet, cheese and honey dish which made me like beets for the first time. Unfortunately as the courses went so did the quality of the dishes. The gnocchi and mushrooms was good. Scallop was ok and only a scallop. The filet should have been called a medallion as it was maybe 1-2 ounce with some flavorless purée and not pleasant greens. In addition, probably due to the small size, they never asked how we like our steak and it came out rare which was way undercooked for us. The dessert was supposed to be tres leches; however was a small shot glass with yellow cake and meringue on top. Fist time have have left a 5 course meal hungry before. Not sure how the regular menu is but wouldn't recommend the "chef experience" read more

Dined Saturday evening, 08-11-2018, with my wife and two friends. Let me say that three of the four entrees were excellent. However, the Mediterranean Chicken with pearl couscous let a lot to be desired. The chicken was moist and tender, but the seasonings didn't penetrate past the skin. So the chicken was bland. The pearl couscous was CRUNCHY. Like it sat in a pan and got cooked too much. There were no daily specials. Just the fish featured that night for the catch of the day. The dinner entrees were limited. A glass of house wine contained only 4 ounces at the most, priced at $8 (red) and 11 ( white). The wait staff was excellent. Had a prix fixe meal already set up for our party of 12 girls celebrating a bachelorette party on a Friday night. For $50, our dinner included appetizers served family style of Spanish mushrooms, shrimp cocktail, and plantain bon bons which were wrapped in smoked bacon and had a guava dipping sauce. My favorite of the three were the plantain bon bons because they were something different I've never seen on a menu before and had a nice balance of sweet and savory. The shrimp in the cocktail were pretty large and each of us were fine with having just one. The mushrooms were ok, something to graze on in between courses. We were then all served a local greens salad with a herb vinaigrette that I didn't care for and for my entrée we got to choose between sea scallops, risotto with mushrooms and duck confit, or a hanger steak. I opted for the sea scallops which was served with black rice and pineapple salsa. I was very happy with my choice as it was the perfect amount for me since I always take leftovers but in this case I was not able to since we were doing a haunted pub crawl immediately afterwards. The scallops were in the U10 range and perfectly cooked, not rubbery or dry at all. I tasted a hint of coconut in the black rice which complemented the scallops and the pineapple salsa which provided a bit of sweetness to the meal. The servers did their best at timing the food and getting us out of the restaurant in time for our pub crawl. They added gratuity to our meal which was $16 and not bad at all. The place itself is very cute and intimate. I would come back again if it were just myself and my husband or a smaller group. And I've eaten at Delonico's in New Orleans and Bolo's in NYC. Plus several of the top seakhouses in Ft. Worth, Colorado, Edmonton and Hawaii. Popped in for a glass of wine and an appetizer during a recent St. Augustine excursion. The atmosphere here is very classy. They have an extensive wine list and a delicious menu. I was pleased to see wines of different price points and quickly ordered a pinot noir. On the side, we ordered a mushroom appetizer, which was extremely good. Our server was very nice and checked on us often. My only regret with Michael's is that we did not plan for a full meal here. Michael's with a Twist is typically found in the parking lot at Ocean Grove RV Park, located at 4225 A1A S. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from around 11AM till 2:00PM. I had the Pan con Lechon Sandwich.. Slow roasted pork with garlic aioli, herb chimichurri, avocado, and lettuce. It was a flavor bomb! So tasty. This place was phenomenal! We opted to go out for our girl's night here back in January. The food was so delicious and the atmosphere was very nice. The service was okay, not remarkable but nothing particularly bad about it. One thing I would warn someone about is the noise level. While we were able to hold conversations relatively okay, sound carries a bit more in this place so a private conversation might not go over so well. The menu here changes seasonally, so I can say with sincerity I will be back in the future to see what they have to offer! read more

First off, when we walked in their dinner rush was over for about an hour and they were going to close early at 8:30pm...they close at 9:00pm and they also closed down the kitchen. Our family of 4 and a family of 3 came in about the same time. They were very welcoming and treated us like they just opened. Also, 3 out of the 4 members of our family have food allergies and they were very accommodating and helpful with changing up our meals. With that said, the food was excellent! Husband had the special, grouper étouffée. It was a reasonable size portion and very good. One child had the chicken fricassee. It was a substantial amount of food and the white rice was very light and fluffy, the chicken was very tender and the sauce had a lot of flavor and tied everything together. The other child had the burger which was very juicy and was cooked to a good medium. Fries were nice and crispy and seasoned well with salt. I splurged and had the rack of lamb. They were melt in your mouth delicious and the potato/lamb sausage hash and brussels sprouts had a wonderful taste. Overall, we had a great experience and a lovely evening out. read more

First and foremost, trying to find parking for this restaurant is a nightmare. We were 40 minutes late for our reservation due to the lack of available parking. Apps: the mushrooms were good, not great. The Lumpia over cooked and tasteless. My wife had the duck. She was underwhelmed by the preparation and texture. Duck should never be chewy. The asparagus side was delicious. I had the special bone-in ribeye. It was good but not better than I could have made at home. At $58, not worthwhile. My side of garlic mashed potatoes appeared to have been sitting for a while and warm at best. My wife said the dessert was delicious. It's a cool space that I will never visit again. read more

Went yesterday for brunch. They told us we were the first ever customers for brunch. I'll tell you they hit a home run. The service was terrific, and the food was excellent. Their food at dinner time is terrific too so we should've expected it to be great. The chicken and waffles were the best I've ever had. While working a job that required full-time travel around the state of Florida, I found myself in St. Augustine with a long afternoon / evening break prior to our next event. While on a guided tour through the historic area of the "Old City," the November breezes mixed with an ethereal sort of music wafting from The Tasting Room. It was a non-imposing establishment with a simple shingle out front that I might not have given a second thought if it hadn't been for the music leaking out into the street and commandeering the steering of my feet. Like a pied piper, it drew my coworker and I back there upon completion of our walking tour. What seemed to be a group of musicians making brilliant music prior to entering was actually a single performer (as he was absent his percussionist this night), Goliath Flores, playing guitar, singing (vocalizing brass instruments so real you would think he -- or someone -- was playing a trumpet, trombone, et al.) all the while tapping a tambourine at appropriate intervals with his foot. His creative brilliance was enough to do justice to simply placing foot past the threshold even IF the food hadn't been top notch. I was thrilled that he invited me to sit in with him on a couple of pieces when he observed that I am a percussionist as well. The music was too loud? Nay. And they have convenient outdoor seating for those who wish for a toned down music experience. And about the food: I'm not a professional chef or food critic / taster, but as a professional amateur that does indeed enjoy good food, and unique spicings and pairings, the food was scrumptious and the sangria was perfection. Is it pricey? Perhaps a bit? But what do you expect when you go out to eat at a place that isn't fast food that provides a full dining experience? Speaking as a business-owner, if you aren't interested in paying for service and quality, both of which were superb both times I visited here, then I dare-say you should be at home Julia Childs-ing your own tapas and mixing your own sangria. Everyone knows -- or should know -- that you're paying for the experience as well. And yes, it is a historic area with sometimes challenging parking, but the best things in life are often challenging. Be honest with yourself -- it's a historic district with narrow streets and virtually non-existent parking within this area. Aside from being able to pull relatively close and drop someone off who might be disabled or not as able to walk long distances, it will require that you park a few blocks away and walk. Why not consider that part of the entire experience -- the anticipation prior to the reveal of a great dining experience followed by leaving on a cloud of having had all your senses deliciously stimulated and activated. Perhaps, though, we live in a society that is so steeped in instant gratification to the point where walking a few blocks is simply out of the question to them. And to them I say, that's why I'm thankful for barriers to entry. It keeps the much less dedicated and serious -- even passionate -- people from getting to the diamonds in the rough. The cream in the middle. The fruit in the sangria. This establishment easily falls into my Top 5 places to return to when in Florida -- especially if Mr. Flores is performing on any given evening. I am counting the days until my return. Oh and a note to music producers / booking agents: See Goliath Flores asap. You will be moved to action as he will bring a return on investment. Tasting Room Proprietor: Keep doing what you're doing. The cream will rise to the top and you won't be at a lack for customers who appreciate your efforts. read more

We had Michael cater our wedding reception (appetizers, salad, main course) and everything was absolutely excellent. Stephanie (Michael's wife) was our contact person and she was on top of everything. The food was delicious, and the guests specifically commented on the octopus appetizer. They also worked within our budget and made a custom made menu for our preferences and the ingredients in season at the time. We had initially dined in their restaurant and based on our experience, asked them to cater our wedding. Definitely recommend them for catering a special occasion since they are excellent, both in service and in the food quality!! read more

We came here right after the official lighting ceremony for Christmas in St. Augustine, and right after proposing to my future wife.....soooo, I might be on a bit of a cloud nine with how much I enjoyed this place. BUT, I will say, I think they would have gotten a 5 star regardless. Starting with no reservation, then they offered us to sit on the couches in front of the live flamanco guitarist...um, hell yea. SCORE. They brought out a complimentary glass of champagne for the 4 of us, not asked, totally on point. The food was outstanding! The light tapas food we dined all were all a huge success. After years of walking by we finally made it our destination. I was blown away as soon as we walked in, very chic for St. Augustine. I recently moved here from South Beach FL, and one of my main complaints are the restaurants here don't make it "an experience". The tasting room delivers that experience with gorgeous decor, the wait staff was very informed and professional, beautiful mood lighting and lovely tables. Jazz trio was set up and rounded out the experience. I was overwhelmed by the wine menu, it is extensive and there is something for everyone. I got sidetracked when I saw the Peach Sangria and ordered that. The size was generous and I Loved that it wasn't overly sweet or "themey". Just a simple white wine with a hint of liquor and peaches. We didn't order very well though, for our tapas. We ordered the marinated mushrooms, which were just ok. the croquettes which were alright, although I found them to be missing something. I did love the Drunken Goat, which was the most delightful goat cheese with marinated onions and peppers. That was Amazing. Over all I am looking forward to going back and trying more of hte dishes and perhaps a wine flights. I highly recommend the Tasting Room, but go dressed up, there were entirely too many people in there in just shorts and a t. Its Friday night - put some pants on :) read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent dinner at The Tasting Room. In fact, there really wasn't a thing to criticize, so we're going with five stars here. Thanks to Daisy D for her recent review, which helped this place pop up on our radar. Our reservation was ready upon arrival. We had a small table for two next to the large booth in the front room. The art and interior design give this place a very comfortable feel and our servers were friendly and attentive. The food and wine selections we had were all delicious and arrived promptly. Meal highlights included: (tapas) the mahi bites, Spanish olives plate, and mixed greens salad with roasted beets; (entrees) the seared ahi tuna and vegetarian paella. LDC loved the paella. Even the bread and oil were a step above the normal complementary fare. LDC believes it was a hint of salt baked into the crust, plus Spanish olive oil, which apparently has a bit more flavor than many Italian versions (like the olives?). She's the chef; I'm just an eater but I'm willing to take her word for it. We also had two flights of white wines from Spain, with excellent SB, Pinot Grigio, Albarino, and Riesling. Great mix and pairings with the food, and a nice way to sample the larger wine list, which others have raved about already. Only downside? We didn't save room for dessert. Random notes: There are some parking spots available around the restaurant, which is rare for places in the historic district. And they do take reservations via OpenTable. You can certainly dress casual, but be aware that the servers will be more stylish than you. ;) We will surely return and would highly recommend The Tasting Room, especially for an evening with friends, as the tapas are perfect for sharing. Came here due to a Groupon for the 4-course "Ultimate Dinner". Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. When you sign up for the Ultimate Experience, you're taking quite a chance, since you don't know going in what's included in this meal. When we got the menu, we were fairly pleased with what we saw - except for the dessert - which was described as "grapefruit tart". The 1st course (appetizer) was tuna tartare, which was pretty darn tasty. My boyfriend, who normally doesn't eat raw fish, actually enjoyed this dish. The 2nd course was some kind of broiled (or baked) fish, served over rice & black beans. This one, although NOT BAD, was not particularly awesome either. It was "just ok". But you best believe I ate every grain of rice. (I love rice). The 3rd course was hanger steak, which was pretty decent. This cut of steak is normally served medium or medium rare - which are both "too rare" for me. I asked (ahead of time) if they could cook mine medium well, and they graciously obliged. We were anxious about dessert, LOL. Throughout dinner, our party of 4 made cracks about dessert - how we were SO not looking forward to it - and we should just go to McDonald's to get a sundae, LOL. To our delight, however, this grapefruit tart turned out to be quite good! There was nothing "grapefruity" about it. It had a very "clean" taste, very refreshing, and not too sweet. It was basically whipped cream on a butter tart. We went on a Saturday night. There was live flamenco music, which I really enjoyed. Service was good. One of the friends who dined with us gave this place only 3 stars due to the price of the food (no doubt - it is a pricey place). For that price, she expected to be "wowed" by the food. I agree with that sentiment. But I'm making an exception and giving this place 4 stars due to the fact that I enjoyed food that I did NOT choose for myself. Incredible! There is no better way to describe this place. We went during lunch and had very few people there but we loved it because we got VIP treatment. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We had a 1 yr old with us and she was very patient and even catered to him. We ordered sangrías, a red and a white one. The red (pomegrante) was my favorite, the white was guava flavored. We ordered 2 appetizers, crispy pork belly and clams Jerez that were delicious! Our entrees were even better! The arroz verde was creamy like a risotto. The shrimp and grits didn't disappoint either! We all loved it. . And I mean the1 year old too! He is a future foodie and yelper! read more

We went to this restaurant Friday night as it was recommended by our hotel valet. Our taxi driver also said she heard nothing but good things about this restaurant. We ordered a number of items: Marinated Manchego - Garlic, rosemary, olive oil, Marcona almonds and sun-dried cherries. This was absolutely delicious. Patatas Bravas - Crispy potatoes with spicy aioli and sea salt. These were so good we placed a second order. When we saw the aioli on the 2nd order we realized there was none on the first. The server insisted we were wrong. "ok" It didn't matter because it was better without it. However this was the best thing we ate. DELICIOUS. Gambas - Fiery garlic and paprika shrimp with sautéed peppers onions and extra virgin olive oil. This was fine but there was no "fiery." It would have been much better with some heat/spice. Pollo al Ajillo - Sautéed chicken with garlic and smoked Pimentón and a touch of lemon. This was disgusting. No taste. We correctly identified it as thigh meat. No taste. The server at least took it off our meal which was not our intent but was nice. Costillas de Cerdo - Roasted pork spare ribs with membrillo-pineapple glaze. This was our last item. We were totally stuffed at this point and realized we didn't need it. Good because it wouldn't have been missed. I tasted no glaze or actually any taste at all. It was completely bland. I would have given this 4 stars if it wasn't for the service. There wasn't a bit of a warm greeting or feeling when we checked in. Even though our server removed the one item she was without much personality. Other servers gave no special feeling of concern for guests when they brought the food. The restaurant has a cute setting and they had a decent duo playing music and that was a nice touch. My server for some reason gave my friend a bad feeling in that her hair was in her face and that made her feel like she didn't have a polished clean look. If they worked on the service and fine-tuned the food a bit more this could be a home run. But for now it is average and I wouldn't make a point of coming back if in town. They really need to work on training the servers and hostess. read more
