This is a Thai Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine restaurant, they have menus from each cuisine. We came here on a Saturday evening and we ordered a pho, some fried wontons and a vermicelli dish (with spring roll and chicken). For three people this was more than enough food and we had leftovers to take home. The pho and vermicelli dish is solid but not the best we've ever had. This is a casual spot where people come to eat with their family and friends. The washrooms are in the back. You actually need to go into a hallway that is not part of the restaurant. You can see my pictures. I have to say that the service here is outstanding and very attentive. My mom dropped a pack of tissues and one of the servers went out to the parking lot to return it to her which was such a kind gesture. Would definitely come again when we're in the area. read more

We wanted to go to another Viet restaurant but unfortunately they were closed on a TUESDAY!! We did a quick Yelp search and came upon Mekong River which was located in a run-down small strip. We got the: Hue Spicy Beef Noodle (meh, was kinda expecting more) Chicken Pho (kids ate it which is always good) Spring Rolls (kids ate it which is always good) Bun Vermicelli Bowl (pretty standard, nothing wow) Vietnamese Pancake (made with coconut oil so the coconut flavor was really strong and unappetizing but large portion size) Overall this is a fusion restaurant with Viet/Thai/Chinese so they have it all but nothing is really good. The pho industry is getting more and more competitive these days and a lot of the focus is in the broth. I would say the broth at Mekong River is decent but it feels like it is missing something, or a kick. It tastes slightly underwhelming / unremarkable than other more popular pho places in the GTA. It is enjoyable but it is not the better ones I have ever had. It leaves me feeling like my crave of pho was not fixed. However, I would say the service and the speed at Mekong River is excellent for a quick lunch / fixing a crave. The establishment is comfortable, clean and spacious. read more

I was pretty excited to try this place, and when the food came out, it looked delicious. but this is one of those situations where you should not judge a book by its cover. The taste was lacking in every way, the pad thai, although being the specialty, was severely underwhelming. The mango salad could have benefited from a tangy dressing, and the crispy chow mein, although plated very well, was also missing some additional flavor. Once you douse it in the hot sauce it is much better though. All that being said, my kids thoroughly enjoyed the crispy chow mein, so maybe my standards are too high. I give it a 3 bc the service is excellent and staff are very attentive. read more

We happened to be in the area, and I'm always down for Vietnamese food, so dinner at Mekong River was an easy decision. It's a smaller place than I was imagining, but we were still able to snag a nice table near the back of the restaurant. We decided to order the Vietnamese Pancake ("shrimp, chicken, bean sprouts, onion & green bean") as an appetizer, but the dish didn't actually arrive until we were almost finished our mains. Not great. Anyway, it's an unusual concoction that tastes pretty bland on its own but becomes quite flavorful when eaten with the various provided sauces. For my main, I decided to order from the Vermicelli (Bun) side of the menu, and I got the Grilled Beef & Crispy Spring Rolls on Vermicelli. This is a dish I've eaten hundreds, if not thousands of times, so my expectations were high. It didn't disappoint. This is absolutely a top-tier version of this Vietnamese staple. All the components were well above average, and I have to single out the tender, flavorful meat. The included fish sauce ties the whole thing together and creates an absolutely addictive soup at the bottom of the bowl. Really, really fantastic. I'll absolutely be returning, but I think I'll forgo the appetizer next time. read more

Mekong River is located on the ground floor of a nondescript office building in Etobicoke and offers Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese cuisine. I was there because my client swears they do the best Pho in town. With such a boast, I must try it! The restaurant is small but still comfortable seating. The menu is large and there is about 13 Pho noodle items and comes in S/M/L from $7 to $9. I ordered the Large Rare Beef Rice Noodle Soup. The large portion is large. Generous amounts of beef and noodle with a slightly oily broth. The broth was a little bland, which isn't a bad thing as you can add to it. I added the standard barrage of add-ins - sprouts, leaves, lime. The obligatory sriracha and hoisin was also added and something was still missing. I ended up adding the hot peppers too. Helped a bit. I guess I need a deeper broth flavour to start with - not salt or more MSG though. All in all, an enjoyable yet not the best Pho I've had. The fact is though, Pho is slim pickings in the area so this actually might be the best there! Those poor dear people not living up on the Hill or downtown TO where there are incredible places to pacify any viet-cravings! A decent 3.5 stars. Cheers! read more

I decided to go hete after searching on yelp for some great Pho. Those of you who are Pho fans know its all about the broth. Many places cheat by using artificial flavourings to create the broth but none of that here... The very friendly owner shared how the broth is created by boiling beef bones for hours in accordance with the traditional methods of his parents. While the Vietnamese Pho is a very poular menu item here served as a very generous portion there are many other Asian inspired dishes such as Thai Curries or Pad Thai.... The current owner whose parents started the restaurant many years ago Is clearly committed to following tried and true traditions while not being afraid to give them a modern twist and is clearly passionate about food. This was our first visit to Mekong River. We went for lunch today (Monday around 12:30pm). The restaurant was quite busy with only 2 free tables. We sat down and waited around 10 minutes until a pot of tea was delivered. It was only then that the waitress realized we didn't have an order slip on our table, so she got one for us right away. Our order was collected after about 5 more minutes, so this is already very slow as compared to other Viet. restaurants in that area. Granted, this restaurant is Viet./Thai/Chinese so not strictly Vietnamese. I ordered a small bowl of pho with brisket and beef balls (only $7, so not bad). My husband ordered the My Tho style seafood soup with glass noodles ($9). We also ordered the crispy shrimp spring rolls ($5.50) to share. The My Tho soup came first, followed by the spring rolls. My pho came about 5 minutes later (not unusual for our local Viet. style restaurants). The My Tho was quite small in comparison to other local places, but had a fair amount of seafood in it. The broth was quite bland, so my husband had to add some fish sauce. Otherwise, he enjoyed it. The shrimp spring rolls were delicious! They were definitely the best part of the meal and I'd order them again although they were a bit small for the price. The small pho was just right for the price. It was very tasty and had a good amount of brisket and 4 meat balls. I have no complaints about it. I also got a good amount of Thai basil, bean sprouts and lime on the side. When we first arrived there was no sambal oelek, sriracha or hoisin on the table, but she brought some right after our food arrived. All in all, it was a good experience. The only thing I'd be eager to return for is the crispy shrimp rolls as we can get much better pho and my tho style soup closer to home, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from visiting Mekong River. I dIscovered Mekong River on my drive out of Toronto. Usually I'm staying in the city, but I had a pho craving while driving back stateside. Yelp brought me to Mekong River. I was a bit worried about it being a "pan-Asian" restaurant, having an all-encompassing menu, but not specializing in one particular cuisine. However, I had nothing to worry about as their Vietnamese food was excellent. I ordered a House Pho along with fried spring rolls. Their pho had a flavorful meaty broth with generous amounts of meat. I also found the beef to be of high quality with a good amount of marbled fat on the brisket and still some pink on the steak. The spring rolls were also really good. Super crispy without being oily and served with lettuce, pickled julienned carrots and daikon. Simple, but very well done. Service was friendly and food came up promptly. Pricing was fair and portions were good. Overall, Mekong River is a great Vietnamese option in the area. I would return without hesitation. read more

This place used to be tasty with plentiful portions, or course paid extra on side. The meals we recieved today were absolute garbage. Way too salty, 4 slices of meat. We asked for less sauce so it would be not a soup and instead comes out drier than the Sahara desert. We ordered (attempted), an appetizer of meatball fresh rolls and the order was completely forgotten without apology. Whilst eating we literally watched 2 tables next to us get firstly served fresh rolls before main. Went to pay and the broad had pure attitude, took my money, and didn't say anything. Sooo good! My mouth is watering just thinking about the food here. I've been here quite a few times and it has yet to fail me. I usually get something Viet while my bf opts for pad thai. Pho is a bit cheaper AND fresher than other places. Furthermore, I haven't detected any use of MSG! Vermicelli dishes are soo flavourful, down to the marinated meat. I came here with some family members for lunch and if there's one thing I wish I knew before coming here, it's this: do NOT get the shanghai noodles. I repeat, do NOT get the shanghai noodles. I typically love Shanghai noodles but whatever they gave me was not Shanghai noodles. The noodles were almost flat and it lacked flavour and colour. It looked very similar to the pad thai my cousin ordered and I had to add soy sauce to give it flavour. I am someone that does not like an abundance of flavour, however the Shanghai noodles did nothing for me. My sister ordered house pho which was good. The ratio of noodles to soup was a bit high though, they should have put more soup / less noodles. My cousin got the curry pad thai which he was not that impressed with. I think based on the reviews, try to stick to pho if you are coming here and definitely avoid the Shanghai noodles at all costs. read more

My wife and I went on a Friday evening for dinner. Its a small place, very clean with an attentive staff. The menu suggests they serve Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese food in a fusion method. Its a very large menu. It is a tad old world since they request you fill in a form to select your food. A throwback to 1960' s LCBO? We ordered a Pho, a Vietnamese "meatball" on noodles and a Thai vegetarian dish. The Pho was good the soya salad was OK, the "meatball" noodle dish was a sausage cut into pieces. While we were disappointed overall with the food quality the service was good and fast. The price was reasonable. All that said we will not be back. There are many better Asian eateries in Toronto. read more

It's a bit small for a pho place but clean. Service is friendly as well. I ordered the fresh shrimp rolls and those were okay, and the peanut sauce was very tasty. I also ordered the rice with grilled pork, fried egg and steamed crab meat. I love either a properly cooked overeasy or sunny side up egg, so that the yolk runs over the rice and makes it so much tastier. The egg was somewhat overcooked and it wasn't runny enough for my liking. While the pork chop was fresh, it was pretty bland, as was the crab meat. I've been here twice. Both times I ordered the chicken vermicelli because despite it having no flavour the first time, I totally forgot what I tried the first time..... until I ordered the it again. Nothing has changed. The chicken vermicelli has absolutely no flavour and the service is slow. I'm pretty sure I could make better vermicelli just by following a YouTube recipe. read more

I frequent Mekong River at least once a month and they are generous with their meat portion for the Pho (I typically get the house special, or the rare beef and tripe). You can't order a small pho for take out, only medium and large. Their fried spring rolls are very good also. Not as great as the golden turtle (on Ossington), but really good for Etobicoke! The Vietnamese cold coffee is really good also. The only thing I would give a lower rating would be their milkshakes. I've had the mango a few times and it's not bad... but not as good as your better Pho joints. read more

I can't believe Mekong River has been opened for so long and I've never been there until a few weeks ago! A couple of girls from the office, who live in the hood suggested we go there for lunch. We ordered Fresh Grilled Chicken Rolls, Mango Salad (best I've ever eaten), Pad Woon Sen (with shrimp) and Stir-fried Beef with Vegetable in a Satay Sauce. Everything was like something I never tasted - very authentic with exceptionally good quality - I've been craving that Pad Woon Sen (glass noodle) dish since I left! The lunch specials are great. For under $12 with tax u get a few options on lunch menu plus a spring roll, soup AND sofa pop! Only prob I have is with their pho, they totally skimp on the meat. I ordered the "special" which typically comes with all the "meats". I may have gotten couple slices of beef, 2 sprigs of tripe, a half slice of tendon and half, yes half a measly little beef ball! I've been here a few times, and I can't say they have been positive experiences. While the food is quite tasty, the service is terrible. Whenever I have gone there, something comes late or not at all. We've had to remind them about drink orders, people's main courses have arrived well after others have received theirs, and trying to pay the bill always takes forever. While I enjoy their food, I don't see myself eating in the restaurant again. Maybe their take-out is the better option. read more

Came here on a Friday with some friends looking for a quick, easy, late dinner. In an area near the subway with mostly fast food places, this place I would consider in between because of the types of dishes available. I saw it like a typical soup noodle quickie type restaurant dressed up a little better. The atmosphere can be loud as the restaurant is quite small; I realize my party was the loudest. Service was warm and welcoming, and the restaurant was clean with a nice atmosphere. The washrooms however were small as it was one stall which required a key. I ordered a simple pork and chicken with rice dish. It was nothing special; actually I had better ones in the "lesser" viet restaurants I've been to. The chicken was ok but the pork was a little tough. Overall the taste was ok. I looked around the table and saw the others who ordered had very elaborate dishes ranging from simple pho noodle soup and pad thai. Perhaps I should have went for those specialty dishes instead. I'd come again to try the other dishes however as the experience here was more positive than negative. read more

Loved the food and the ambiance of this restaurant. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but the inside was really cozy and, although casual, the decor was appropriate for a nice sit down dinner. I base my ratings for Vietnamese cuisine according to their grilled chicken and rice or vermicelli. So I ordered the grilled chicken with rice and added an egg with an additional charge. My friend got the Pad Thai. The service was a bit slow and the food took a bit longer than other Viet restaurants I've been to, but considering the fully occupied restaurant, I understood. The server was friendly, nevertheless. The portion sizes were good and the chicken was excellent...not too greasy (as I've experienced in the past). My dish was also served with a side of pho broth, which according to the server, was to be eaten with the rice. This was something that has never been served at other restaurants that I have been to. Although I still do prefer the flavour of the lemongrass grilled chicken from Pho mi 99 at Latimer, this chicken had a different seasoning which was good too for a change. The Pad Thai was also really enjoyed. By the time we were done with dinner the waiting line for a table had significantly increased, which goes to show it's popularity.
