No Sleep Til Jalisco - so good! Pork Belly Adobo Plate in the background, along with Pork Belly Bao and Brussel Sprout Salad
    Katie E.

Came here with a group of girlfriends for a group dinner on a Saturday night a few weekends ago. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Cute space! The ambiance is very welcoming, and we had almost the whole back room to ourselves.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] To start, to drink we tried a few different cocktails including espresso martinis and the No Sleep Till Jalisco, which was like a spicy marg with a fun mango tajin sucker, SO so good! To eat we shared an order of lumpia and the hush puppies, both were phenomenal. The lumpia came with a generous amount, and the hush puppies sauce was outstanding. For my main course I ordered the Pork Belly Bao and the Brussel Sprout Salad. That salad was absolutely incredible, it was almost like fried brussel sprouts, so it didn't taste 'healthy' but it tasted oooh sooo good. Addicting! That was definitely the favorite of the dishes. We also tried the Pork Belly Adobo, which was a bit disappointing. It was just large pieces of fatty pork belly, and no accompaniments. No bread or anything to go with it.. definitely felt like it was missing something, but was not bad. We also tried the burger which was good, and the green beans as well which were delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, we had a great time at Maypole! Large space to accommodate our group, seems great for girls night out but I can also see a family eating here no problem.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Would definitely come back again- especially for the espresso martinis and the No Sleep Till Jalisco ;)

Wheaton downtown has evolved over the years and it's certainly a pleasure to experience the diverse cuisines it has to offer. We have been to Maypole twice, once for brunch and the other time for dinner. Both times were enjoyable. For brunch, we had the lumpia, bistek Filipino breakfast, and chicken and waffles. The lumpia came with eight pieces and a side of sweet chili sauce. The bistek Filipino breakfast is braised beef steak with a side of garlic rice and two eggs. The beef was incredibly tender and juicy. The fried chicken is not spicy but it came with a side of spicy maple syrup. We did not use the syrup since we shared the entree with our young daughters. The waffle was made with ube and it was fluffy. For dinner, we had the lumpia, pork belly adobo, and fried chicken sandwich. The pork belly adobo had a hint of coconut and was paired with pickled carrot and daikon. It was light and refreshing despite it being fatty meat. However, I found it weird that this dish was awkwardly "lonely" because it was a plate with three slabs of thin-sliced pork belly. I think it could've been further enhanced by a side of rice. The fried chicken sandwich is a very generous amount that can easily be shared. We look forward to returning and trying the other dishes such as the fried fish and mussels.

Love a good plate wall and that color palette...

Updating to include Subourban: This is a very special and intuitive place. It feels posh and exclusive without being impossible to get into. Drinks are imagined by a team that includes someone with a PhD in ice cream (!) and it shows, with drinks that use techniques like switching and clarification. When celebrities visit Wheaton (lol) this is where they will hang out.

    Sisig... Just okay. Bland.

Late post. Being Filipino, I was so excited to try this restaurant . Our family of 5 came early on a Sat in late Sept. to try their breakfast menu. The bright and colorful decor and friendly service were positivs. But the food / value was underwhelming. We ordered: tofu sisig, Filipino breakfast, tortang talong, ube pancakes, breakfast sandwich, ube roll, and arroz caldo. The sisig was bland. The longanisa in the Filipino breakfast was dry. The talong was good but overpriced. The best dish was the arroz caldo... Flavorful and delicious. The rest of the dishes were just okay. I really wanted to love this place but was disappointed. A couple of oddities: They didn't serve Sprite or similar. Their cola products tasted bad/off. Maybe their was a problem with their soda machine. They also didn't serve sugar (for coffee). Instead they served some liquid brown sweetener which I didn't care for.

Downtown Wheaton has a hidden gem! We tried this place today and was not disappointed! We had the Lumpia - Filipino egg rolls My daughter could eat 5 of these herself if we didn't stop her haha. Nice, crunchy and big portion The star of the meal was the Breakfast Burger (everything you would want in a burger Fried egg, sausage, hash brown) We also loved the pork belly BLT and the popcorn chicken The ambiance: Indoor or outdoor options and nice decor Service was top notch We will be back for more!

Took my friend to Maypole for her birthday and she loved it. We had an amazing time. Our server, Megan, was wonderful, gave good recommendations. My friend had thousands of questions and she was so sweet. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated in the front area and had a very English countryside vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with the egg rolls, crunchy and delicious. We also ordered the Maypole meat sampler (the pork belly was my fave), pancit, sisig tofu (spicy goooood) - all super yummy. My fave was the Filipino breakfast plate with bistec (steak), garlic fried rice and 2 eggs - it was all cooked to perfection. The sunny side eggs had the crunchy edges just the way I like it. The fried rice had plenty of garlic. And the steak was nice and juicy. I can eat that dish all day and every day. I wish I didn't live so far away, but I will make the 30 mile drive. Please excuse the finger in photos. I was rushing her to take it. Everything look to delicious to wait.

We ate brunch here with my mom and our three kids (10, 8 & 4). We kinda fell in love when we walked up and into the space. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We appreciate the whimsical and modern decor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was excellent; from the hostess to the waitress and the food was delicious. My mom said it was in the salty side but we disagree; we felt it was appreciate for all the food we tasted. My mom also got arroz caldo and was pleased with it. The garlic fried rice had enough of a crunch to complement the tortang talong. We got the turon and coconut pineapple ice cream to top it off. I need to come back and try dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also they got karaoke on Friday nights[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Maypole is a great establishment for the true Wheaton experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The raised patio is in just the right spot to enjoy their unique menu and take in all that Wheaton has to offer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Right in the heart downtown on Front street, where all the action is.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Special thanks to Avri, for above and beyond service to my wife and I, who were celebrating my birthday. I recommend the steak sandwich with the grilled corn and hush puppies on the side. Tender flavorful cut of steak and the corn had just the right amount of creaminess and spice to it. We will be dining again soon.

I am impressed that I haven't found anything bad to say about the food here yet. I came here for breakfast with friends recently and got new items. They were all high quality Quality- the congee was very good. I could taste a blend of savory flavors in it. A nice mix of refreshing fish and meat taste. The longinista side was flavorful and the cinnamon roll looking thing was just the right level of sweet. The Filipino breakfast, chicken with waffle, and tofu sisig were all unique and well cooked. Quantity- a good amount came out for the price. Atmosphere- nice cozy area to hang out. Service- awesome waiters and waitresses

Such a unique and cute spot to grab food! We made a reservation ahead of time but they didn't have a table for us so we had to wait. They were super jam packed, but service was good and everyone was friendly and helpful. We went for dinner and got the pre fix menu which is $60 and well worth the value. prefix comes with Lumpia and brussel sprout salad to start. And let me tell you, you MUST TRY the brussel sprout salad. I'm not usually a huge fan of brussel sprouts but these blew me away! It's slightly spicy and savory, packed with umami flavors. Next was the Maypole Sampler, comes with practically all the meats on their menu, fried fish, hot and fried chickens, and pork belly adobo. All are delicious, very much fried served with sauces on the side. Pork belly was so tender and juicy. Their rice was also unique and I very much enjoyed the firmness and unique seasoning! Lastly you finish the night with a Turon Sundae, which is coconut pineapple ice cream topped with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and a fried spring roll filled with banana and jackfruit. This was super unique and refreshing, super delicious! Portions are huge for two people. If you order just the chicken you'll get like 5 giant pieces of chicken for $30 bucks, might as well get the pre fix.

Went to Maypole for breakfast prior to walking over to the farmers market. Very good food and atmosphere. Food was very flavorful as I ordered a more "traditional" breakfast. My progression through the menu is probably expressed best in the photos I've taken. I will get everything I ordered, and ate, AGAIN! The ambiance is very hospitable with an inviting decor. The staff is equally as warm and welcoming. Everyone, top to bottom, the host, the mixologist/barista and the chef! Cheers everything, excellent job and we will see you again. Note, I picked up that bottle of hot sauce from the farmers market. Thank you Mr. Barista

Been here twice now and my rating has not changed. Husband and I both felt like portions were small and overpriced. We were impressed by the drinks and desserts....but the food is not something worth coming for. For brunch, husband had the Filipino breakfast which was very basic. Being Filipino himself, he felt like he could have made it better himself. I ordered the veggie breakfast sandwich which was good, but nothing to rave about. We came here again for lunch at another time and had the same underwhelming experience. Husband decided on the bistek bowl, which he felt like he should have gotten in a sandwich. That 'build your own' option on the menu is nice.... but not when it's too customizable to where some ingredients don't make sense to be in a bowl, such as cheese. The servers didn't even recommend to remove that...so he ended up eating cheese over rice and meat in his bowl. I decided on the fried fish sandwich - which I liked but we both weren't happy about the total amount we had spent for lunch. I really liked the ube cheesecake dessert. It was very smooth, delicious, and the ube taste is strong. The drinks here are unique and I enjoyed the different flavors. The ambiance of Maypole is nice as well....but I do think the outdoor and atrium seating is tight and too close to others. This is not a good option if you want privacy with your party or if you plan on having intimate conversations. I wanted to come and support Maypole as this is his my husband's culture, likewise he wanted to try out this new restaurant to see if it would become a favorite. It's pleasing to see Wheaton have a Filipino/American restaurant, however not sure if we'll ever be back again due to the basic menu, high prices, and not-so satisfying past experiences.

Food: The arroz caldo was the standout dish, it was a very savory bowl of rice porridge. Hashbrowns were crunchy but lacking in flavor. The chicken and ube waffles was a mixed bag. The chicken had nice texture with crunch and good flavor. There was a lot of sweet and sour sauce drenching the ube waffles, which overpowered the ube. When I got a bite of the waffle by itself, the ube flavor was very subtle. We went on a Saturday morning for brunch and though they have open bar, the drinks options was very lacking, apparently they ran out the night before and hadn't re-stocked. Service: The servers were fairly attentive and helpful. Ambiance and setting: The decor in the room by the entrance was very beautiful and aesthetic. However, the main room had an entirely different vibe to it which made it a jarring transition. They also had a kids event going on when we visited on the weekend morning, so I guess so long you don't mind kids songs playing in the background.

It's across the street from Arby's in a small strip mall. You'll definitely have to make a U-Turn because getting into the lot is weird. Plenty of parking since it is a shared lot. We decided to do two combo meals plus the aristocrat chicken. When dining in, there are about 4 tables so it can be limited if there is a rush hour. The owner was very pleasant and he explained about the items before we looked at the menu. Lumpia was crispy and tasty. Garlic rice was a little oily but still good. Overall, it's about a 4. I would have given them a 5 but that rock hard crispy kare kare is hard to forget. However, I'll return to try other items. -crispy kare kare with garlic rice and lumpia 3 - I wanted to like this but the crispy kare kare was a huge let down. It was very tough to eat. I've had Filipino food many times and it was never this hard. It's a shame because the peanut sauce with the veggies and eggplant were delicious. -bbq pork belly (liempo) with garlic rice and lumpia 5 - I really liked the BBQ pork belly. Very easy to cut with a spoon. Meat was well seasoned. It is fatty, so it's best to eat it with rice. -aristocrat chicken 5 - highly recommended. Chicken is extremely flavorful even for leftovers. Meat is very moist and juicy. Nice balance of sweet and salty. I should have gotten the 10 pieces.

We arrived on a Saturday just after noon and plenty of parking spaces were available in the parking lot. The restaurant was very spacious with Filipino decor throughout. Approximately half of the tables were occupied with diners and my party was seated right away. We were pretty hungry and ordered several items to share family style. Pork sinigang arrived first and had the distinct tamarind flavor I expected without overpowering the rest of the dish. Lechon kawali came next and the pork belly pieces were cut into perfect bite sized pieces full of flavor and crunch; the lechon tasted good with and without the liver gravy sauce. Crispy sisig arrived on a sizzling plate and was seasoned very well in the mixture of sauce and onions; I liked that the pieces of pork were mostly meat unlike other places which like to sneak in cubes of fat. Crispy pata kare kare was the next dish to arrive and at first glance the portion was huge; the portion was very generous with pork and vegetables and was very delicious. Lastly, we had BBQ pork and chicken skewers, each of which were marinated and grilled very well. To drink, I had the sago gulaman which was very refreshing and had the right amount of sweetness. Overall, I was very impressed with my lunch at Hong Ning. Aside from the generous portions, the dishes were not too oily or salty and it is rare to dine at a Filipino restaurant that prepares its food in way that doesn't feel like it is clogging up arteries. Along the wall in the back by the restroom is a collage of Filipino and Filipino American celebrities that dined at the restaurant, which surprised me for a restaurant in the suburbs. I highly recommend Hong Ning for anyone craving a great Filipino meal while in the Carol Stream area.

I absolutely love an Asian bakery, so was super excited to try Kasama (especially after its moment…read morein The Bear!). Got there Sunday at 10:45, and waited almost 1.5 hrs in line. Thankfully they still had their famous breakfast sandwiches by the time I ordered (even though they normally stop selling them at noon). Got a couple drinks- Ube Latte and the Corn Maiz Tea Latte. I'll preface by saying that the Corn Maiz drink was my favorite thing I got from Kasama. It has a strong corn flavor that blends perfectly with the milk tea. This is a 10/10 no notes. Ube latte was also tasty. For food I ordered a ton of things: -Longanisa Egg and Cheese Sandwich w a hash brown: was surprisingly just okay IMO. Egg is very uniquely fluffy, more like a steamed egg than a scramble! The rest of the sandwich was tasty but nothing special. -Filipino Breakfast Platter w both meats: the Tocino is delish! IMO the better of the two breakfast meats. Garlic rice is good, but i always love garlic rice. -Italian Beef Eggrolls: so crispy and delicious with the gardeneira dipping sauce! Weekends only item- be sure to try! -Lumpia: so crispy and flavorful, they really fry things well here. -Matcha Pandan Eclair: the choux was pipped on top, and was so fluffy and delicious. The crispy rice inside the shell added a fun texture. This was my favorite pastry! -Truffle Croissant: lamination was good, flavors were a bit weird. Was overly sweet from the rock sugar + honey, so much that it overpowered the truffle IMO which is hard to do. -Guava and cheese ensaymada: very fluffy brioche with yummy filling. This was good, really wanted to try the ube one but they were out :( -Ube and Huckleberry basque cake: very rich! Was suggested this instead of the ube ensaymada and it was definitely more huckleberry than ube. Tasty though. Overall this spot was good and certain things (corn maiz drink, pandan eclair, Italian beef eggrolls) were worth the wait while others are overhyped. I would definitely order ahead next time for take out or sit inside- cute indoor and outdoor seating options!

I'm nervous about this review, because I'm pretty confident I'm not the right person to write this…read more Let me start by stating up front that I am not now, nor have I ever been, Filipino. This is the first and only Filipino restaurant I've ever eaten at, so I don't claim to have a great frame of reference. Let me also add that I've eaten here five or six times, and to this day I have no idea what I've ordered. But it's soooo good. Everything I've ever had from Salamat Po has been amazing. So I want to speak to people like me who don't know Filipino cuisine- get in there and try it, you'll be glad you did. I generally go there for lunch, which begins with me standing patiently behind several people who clearly know what it is they're ordering, and they're ordering lots of it. While I'm waiting, I stare at everything in the glass case, and usually something new slides out of the kitchen. I might be wrong about this, but I think the food has been different every time I've been there. When I get to the counter, the server always helpfully tells me the name of whatever dish I'm pointing at, but I'm fairly hopeless when it comes to learning these things. The gentleman today was happy to let me sample anything I wanted, but by the time I got up there my heart was already set on something- a beef stew that wound up tasting as good as it looked, tender and flavorful, in an absolutely perfect broth. I also picked up some sort of fried, salted cinnamon plantain dessert that I'll be dreaming about for the next few nights. I found the portion size to be excellent, with a healthy helping of stew on a bed of rice- more than enough to fill me up for lunch and still have a few bites to share with a co-worker. There are still some things I'm looking forward to trying there- the dessert case has some glorious-looking puddings I need to get next time (unless they have those plantain desserts again), and there's a fish entree I've seen a few times that's been calling my name. Just a note for my fellow eaters new to Filipino food- bring your sense of adventure and an open mind. You'll find some flavors, textures and- let's be honest- some parts you're not used to.
