No Sleep Til Jalisco - so good! Pork Belly Adobo Plate in the background, along with Pork Belly Bao and Brussel Sprout Salad
    Katie E.

Came here with a group of girlfriends for a group dinner on a Saturday night a few weekends ago. Cute space! The ambiance is very welcoming, and we had almost the whole back room to ourselves. To start, to drink we tried a few different cocktails including espresso martinis and the No Sleep Till Jalisco, which was like a spicy marg with a fun mango tajin sucker, SO so good! To eat we shared an order of lumpia and the hush puppies, both were phenomenal. The lumpia came with a generous amount, and the hush puppies sauce was outstanding. For my main course I ordered the Pork Belly Bao and the Brussel Sprout Salad. That salad was absolutely incredible, it was almost like fried brussel sprouts, so it didn't taste 'healthy' but it tasted oooh sooo good. Addicting! That was definitely the favorite of the dishes. We also tried the Pork Belly Adobo, which was a bit disappointing. It was just large pieces of fatty pork belly, and no accompaniments. No bread or anything to go with it.. definitely felt like it was missing something, but was not bad. We also tried the burger which was good, and the green beans as well which were delicious. Overall, we had a great time at Maypole! Large space to accommodate our group, seems great for girls night out but I can also see a family eating here no problem. Would definitely come back again- especially for the espresso martinis and the No Sleep Till Jalisco ;)

Wheaton downtown has evolved over the years and it's certainly a pleasure to experience the diverse cuisines it has to offer. We have been to Maypole twice, once for brunch and the other time for dinner. Both times were enjoyable. For brunch, we had the lumpia, bistek Filipino breakfast, and chicken and waffles. The lumpia came with eight pieces and a side of sweet chili sauce. The bistek Filipino breakfast is braised beef steak with a side of garlic rice and two eggs. The beef was incredibly tender and juicy. The fried chicken is not spicy but it came with a side of spicy maple syrup. We did not use the syrup since we shared the entree with our young daughters. The waffle was made with ube and it was fluffy. For dinner, we had the lumpia, pork belly adobo, and fried chicken sandwich. The pork belly adobo had a hint of coconut and was paired with pickled carrot and daikon. It was light and refreshing despite it being fatty meat. However, I found it weird that this dish was awkwardly "lonely" because it was a plate with three slabs of thin-sliced pork belly. I think it could've been further enhanced by a side of rice. The fried chicken sandwich is a very generous amount that can easily be shared. We look forward to returning and trying the other dishes such as the fried fish and mussels.

Love a good plate wall and that color palette...

Updating to include Subourban: This is a very special and intuitive place. It feels posh and exclusive without being impossible to get into. Drinks are imagined by a team that includes someone with a PhD in ice cream (!) and it shows, with drinks that use techniques like switching and clarification. When celebrities visit Wheaton (lol) this is where they will hang out.

    Sisig... Just okay. Bland.

Late post. Being Filipino, I was so excited to try this restaurant . Our family of 5 came early on a Sat in late Sept. to try their breakfast menu. The bright and colorful decor and friendly service were positivs. But the food / value was underwhelming. We ordered: tofu sisig, Filipino breakfast, tortang talong, ube pancakes, breakfast sandwich, ube roll, and arroz caldo. The sisig was bland. The longanisa in the Filipino breakfast was dry. The talong was good but overpriced. The best dish was the arroz caldo... Flavorful and delicious. The rest of the dishes were just okay. I really wanted to love this place but was disappointed. A couple of oddities: They didn't serve Sprite or similar. Their cola products tasted bad/off. Maybe their was a problem with their soda machine. They also didn't serve sugar (for coffee). Instead they served some liquid brown sweetener which I didn't care for.

Downtown Wheaton has a hidden gem! We tried this place today and was not disappointed! We had the Lumpia - Filipino egg rolls My daughter could eat 5 of these herself if we didn't stop her haha. Nice, crunchy and big portion The star of the meal was the Breakfast Burger (everything you would want in a burger Fried egg, sausage, hash brown) We also loved the pork belly BLT and the popcorn chicken The ambiance: Indoor or outdoor options and nice decor Service was top notch We will be back for more!

Took my friend to Maypole for her birthday and she loved it. We had an amazing time. Our server, Megan, was wonderful, gave good recommendations. My friend had thousands of questions and she was so sweet. We were seated in the front area and had a very English countryside vibe. We started with the egg rolls, crunchy and delicious. We also ordered the Maypole meat sampler (the pork belly was my fave), pancit, sisig tofu (spicy goooood) - all super yummy. My fave was the Filipino breakfast plate with bistec (steak), garlic fried rice and 2 eggs - it was all cooked to perfection. The sunny side eggs had the crunchy edges just the way I like it. The fried rice had plenty of garlic. And the steak was nice and juicy. I can eat that dish all day and every day. I wish I didn't live so far away, but I will make the 30 mile drive. Please excuse the finger in photos. I was rushing her to take it. Everything look to delicious to wait.

Maypole is a great establishment for the true Wheaton experience. The raised patio is in just the right spot to enjoy their unique menu and take in all that Wheaton has to offer. Right in the heart downtown on Front street, where all the action is. Special thanks to Avri, for above and beyond service to my wife and I, who were celebrating my birthday. I recommend the steak sandwich with the grilled corn and hush puppies on the side. Tender flavorful cut of steak and the corn had just the right amount of creaminess and spice to it. We will be dining again soon.

I am impressed that I haven't found anything bad to say about the food here yet. I came here for breakfast with friends recently and got new items. They were all high quality Quality- the congee was very good. I could taste a blend of savory flavors in it. A nice mix of refreshing fish and meat taste. The longinista side was flavorful and the cinnamon roll looking thing was just the right level of sweet. The Filipino breakfast, chicken with waffle, and tofu sisig were all unique and well cooked. Quantity- a good amount came out for the price. Atmosphere- nice cozy area to hang out. Service- awesome waiters and waitresses

Such a unique and cute spot to grab food! We made a reservation ahead of time but they didn't have a table for us so we had to wait. They were super jam packed, but service was good and everyone was friendly and helpful. We went for dinner and got the pre fix menu which is $60 and well worth the value. prefix comes with Lumpia and brussel sprout salad to start. And let me tell you, you MUST TRY the brussel sprout salad. I'm not usually a huge fan of brussel sprouts but these blew me away! It's slightly spicy and savory, packed with umami flavors. Next was the Maypole Sampler, comes with practically all the meats on their menu, fried fish, hot and fried chickens, and pork belly adobo. All are delicious, very much fried served with sauces on the side. Pork belly was so tender and juicy. Their rice was also unique and I very much enjoyed the firmness and unique seasoning! Lastly you finish the night with a Turon Sundae, which is coconut pineapple ice cream topped with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and a fried spring roll filled with banana and jackfruit. This was super unique and refreshing, super delicious! Portions are huge for two people. If you order just the chicken you'll get like 5 giant pieces of chicken for $30 bucks, might as well get the pre fix.

Went to Maypole for breakfast prior to walking over to the farmers market. Very good food and atmosphere. Food was very flavorful as I ordered a more "traditional" breakfast. My progression through the menu is probably expressed best in the photos I've taken. I will get everything I ordered, and ate, AGAIN! The ambiance is very hospitable with an inviting decor. The staff is equally as warm and welcoming. Everyone, top to bottom, the host, the mixologist/barista and the chef! Cheers everything, excellent job and we will see you again. Note, I picked up that bottle of hot sauce from the farmers market. Thank you Mr. Barista

Been here twice now and my rating has not changed. Husband and I both felt like portions were small and overpriced. We were impressed by the drinks and desserts....but the food is not something worth coming for. For brunch, husband had the Filipino breakfast which was very basic. Being Filipino himself, he felt like he could have made it better himself. I ordered the veggie breakfast sandwich which was good, but nothing to rave about. We came here again for lunch at another time and had the same underwhelming experience. Husband decided on the bistek bowl, which he felt like he should have gotten in a sandwich. That 'build your own' option on the menu is nice.... but not when it's too customizable to where some ingredients don't make sense to be in a bowl, such as cheese. The servers didn't even recommend to remove that...so he ended up eating cheese over rice and meat in his bowl. I decided on the fried fish sandwich - which I liked but we both weren't happy about the total amount we had spent for lunch. I really liked the ube cheesecake dessert. It was very smooth, delicious, and the ube taste is strong. The drinks here are unique and I enjoyed the different flavors. The ambiance of Maypole is nice as well....but I do think the outdoor and atrium seating is tight and too close to others. This is not a good option if you want privacy with your party or if you plan on having intimate conversations. I wanted to come and support Maypole as this is his my husband's culture, likewise he wanted to try out this new restaurant to see if it would become a favorite. It's pleasing to see Wheaton have a Filipino/American restaurant, however not sure if we'll ever be back again due to the basic menu, high prices, and not-so satisfying past experiences.

Food: The arroz caldo was the standout dish, it was a very savory bowl of rice porridge. Hashbrowns were crunchy but lacking in flavor. The chicken and ube waffles was a mixed bag. The chicken had nice texture with crunch and good flavor. There was a lot of sweet and sour sauce drenching the ube waffles, which overpowered the ube. When I got a bite of the waffle by itself, the ube flavor was very subtle. We went on a Saturday morning for brunch and though they have open bar, the drinks options was very lacking, apparently they ran out the night before and hadn't re-stocked. Service: The servers were fairly attentive and helpful. Ambiance and setting: The decor in the room by the entrance was very beautiful and aesthetic. However, the main room had an entirely different vibe to it which made it a jarring transition. They also had a kids event going on when we visited on the weekend morning, so I guess so long you don't mind kids songs playing in the background.

Since they've opened, I've been here three times. Twice for breakfast and then for dinner. The restaurant is beautiful and modern. Love that they have different areas to seat people. The outdoor area is super cute too, reminds me of European cafes. The food is very good. I do wish they provide more rice that goes with the Longanisa breakfast and some kind of greens with it. The drinks are all very good! Loved the calamansi margarita. Loved the coconut French toast and lumpia. The pork belly adobo is not very traditional, but it was very good. Definitely could share for two people. Hope they add more to their menu in the future! Lastly, the service is excellent. Everyone is so nice and attentive! So nice to have modern Filipino food in the suburbs!

My goodness, everything was so good! The crispy pata has an incredibly crispy skin, with soft, tender, and flavorful pork meat inside. We were told by the owner, Ryan, that they slow cook the meat in its own juices for 6 hours prior to deep frying it. The result is nothing short of one of the best interpretations of this favorite Filipino dish. Definitely my favorite! The lumpia is top-notch -- crispy, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned. The siomai is garlicky and delicious as well. All of this for just $32. The price is unbelievable considering the quality of food they are serving. Everything was fresh and served hot from the kitchen, unlike the typical Filipino "turo-turo" style restaurant. They also have combo meals for $12.99 all day. I have to try their lechon belly and crispy kare-kare next time. This place is truly a hidden gem! You have to try it, and you will not be disappointed. I will definitely recommend it to my friends and family. Thanks to the owner, Ryan. I think you have a winner here!

I got kung pao beef and a couple of other things. The "beef" in the kung pao was so fatty and chewy I could literally not eat it. I kept trying, but it was EVERY PIECE in the container. A total loss. I called to let the restaurant know. The woman who took the call assured me my card would be credited the amount of the item. This was outright FRAUD, as my card was never credited for this food I could not eat. She also said the manager would call me back, which also did not happen. Bad enough the food was inedible, but blatantly lying to me was way over the line. The rest of the items were on the bland side, and I'm not sure if I would have come back. But after what happened, I'm avoiding this place like the plague. I cannot afford to literally throw my money in the garbage.

I do find the Filipino food is a little bit of hit or miss, especially in the states. However, everything was delicious. I initially wanted to get a dinner reservation, but wasn't able to snatch one up even a couple weeks in advance. Spontaneously, my friend and I decided to go for lunch a couple Sundays ago. The weather conditions weren't great as it was raining moderately. This probably deterred at least some people from lining up. I got there around 12 PM and waited for about an hour, which is still long, but not as horrific as I thought. I also ended up with the last breakfast sandwich ticket since the group in front of me decided it wasn't worth it to wait in line so they gave it to me. This basically was the sign for me to stay in line. The ordering process was pretty simple. We ordered at the counter and prayed that there would be seats opened. Initially, we made ourselves comfortable at the bar, but we were able to migrate to a table shortly after. Our drinks came out within a few minutes after ordering and our food came out within 10. 12 OZ OH, HOT YAM! - 6.85 Initially, this was the drink I ordered. However, I thought it was too sweet and didn't feel like the ube flavor was that strong. My friend liked it more than the drink she ordered, so we ended up swapping. ICED BLACK SESAME LATTE - 6.85 This was the drink I swapped for, and the iced version was perfectly refreshing and nutty. It also wasn't too sweet. I would prefer a roastier black sesame flavor, but this was good enough. LONGANISA, EGG, AND CHEESE SANDWICH - 12 The breakfast sandwich didn't love like it'd be anything special, but the bun was incredibly soft and fluffy, with a custard, soft egg. The longanisa was well-seasoned, with the sweet & savory flavors bursting after each bite. I can see why the breakfast sandwiches at Kasama are so popular. Would highly recommend if you're able to snatch one. PORK BELLY ADOBO - 19.50 This item is weekend only, so I had to try it! I also love a good adobo rice. Despite it being pork belly, it was surprisingly not too heavy or fatty. The poached egg mixed in made each bite creamier. The pickled vegetables and chopped scallions were a nice touch to add a bit of tang and aromatics. I did take home half of the rice bowl home to enjoy for breakfast the next day. While this was good, it was probably the weakest of the three food items we ordered. FILIPINO BREAKFAST - 19 +1 for combo (longanisa and tocino) My friend ordered this, which came with a serving each of longanisa and tocino, a bed of garlic rice, sunny side up egg, pickled vegetables, and garnish. I had a bit of both meats, and the tocino was definitely my favorite. It was juicy, a good mix of sweet and savory -- reminded me of the Cantonese BBQ pork belly. I would definitely order something with tocino upon future visit. This was a pricy lunch, but the food was good and tasted cleaner than I had expect. I had a great time trying brunch at Kasama and would love to visit for their dinner menu when I'm in Chicago again.

Considering Alinea is 2 stars and similarly priced, I felt like a few things were lacking. The first issue? I left very hungry. The whole meal lacks any actual meat except two pieces of bird, which are small. The other dishes were primarily seafood or vegetables. I left at 70% capacity of fullness. Regarding the actual food, the quality was solid and the ingredients were excellent. The caviar was delicious, although the design of the small bowl and big bowl made it very annoying if any of your caviar came out you'd have to lift the small bowl out to scrape it. The next seafood platter had fresh shrimp and the toast was excellent with the sour cream. Tasted like a potato chip! The spring roll was unique and required you to roll it up. It's small but packs a good punch. The cabbage with Wagyu barely had any meat, so it was just a bite. The soup was very delicious and hot in temperature. The mackerel is small but fresh. Very good soup. The pancake dish was very unique and enjoyable with the pork. My favorite was the crumb dish with mushrooms. The crumbs were delicious. There were a few small oysters in it. If there were a few chicken bites it would have been perfect. The ending bird dish was tiny. I expected the whole bird to be cooked and many more pieces, but it included two bites and one leg with mushrooms. I thought one or two additional protein dishes were needed. I was at 60% full at that point and it went straight to desserts. The croissant with truffle was delicious with honey. Could have eaten 6 of those. The banana pudding really felt like delicious street food. The frozen shaved ice was delicious with the chocolate underneath. The white chocolate dessert and cracker were light with guava. It felt like the meal heavily overindexed on dessert and not actual entrees. Overall, for 1 star and $200 range I would have given this 9.5/10. But for 2 stars and $325, with a comparison with Alinea and other 2 star restaurants I've been to, this fell short. Increase the food portions and decease the dessert volume. The staff are highly attentive and well trained. Dinner took 2.5 hours.

This is the first and only Filipino restaurant I've ever eaten at, so I don't claim to have a great frame of reference. Let me also add that I've eaten here five or six times, and to this day I have no idea what I've ordered. But it's soooo good. Everything I've ever had from Salamat Po has been amazing. So I want to speak to people like me who don't know Filipino cuisine- get in there and try it, you'll be glad you did. I generally go there for lunch, which begins with me standing patiently behind several people who clearly know what it is they're ordering, and they're ordering lots of it. While I'm waiting, I stare at everything in the glass case, and usually something new slides out of the kitchen. I might be wrong about this, but I think the food has been different every time I've been there. When I get to the counter, the server always helpfully tells me the name of whatever dish I'm pointing at, but I'm fairly hopeless when it comes to learning these things. The gentleman today was happy to let me sample anything I wanted, but by the time I got up there my heart was already set on something- a beef stew that wound up tasting as good as it looked, tender and flavorful, in an absolutely perfect broth. I also picked up some sort of fried, salted cinnamon plantain dessert that I'll be dreaming about for the next few nights. I found the portion size to be excellent, with a healthy helping of stew on a bed of rice- more than enough to fill me up for lunch and still have a few bites to share with a co-worker. There are still some things I'm looking forward to trying there- the dessert case has some glorious-looking puddings I need to get next time (unless they have those plantain desserts again), and there's a fish entree I've seen a few times that's been calling my name. Just a note for my fellow eaters new to Filipino food- bring your sense of adventure and an open mind. You'll find some flavors, textures and- let's be honest- some parts you're not used to. Try a few samples, and I'm sure you'll find a new favorite.
