I've been trying to eat at Max's for YEARS! The first time was 2 years ago for HRW and I had such a bad customer service experience there (I even emailed the General Manager it was that bad) that it left such a bad impression I vowed to never go back. Fast forward to present day. I decided to have lunch there today with my kids. I was offered the HRW menu and the items looked less than desirable (tomato basil soup and chicken tender basket? I'll pass) So I decided to order something from the regular menu. I ordered the Honey Butter Benedict $18 (two biscuits with fried chicken, topped with fried eggs, smothered with jalapeno-cream gravy, served with jalapeno-cheddar grits). The grits were a big miss! In fact I've had better grits at Waffle House!! After two bites of the grits I couldn't stomach eating it anymore. The chicken was under-cooked and the biscuits were hard and dry. I won't even mention the jalapeno cream gravy....the whole meal was a total miss and utter disappointment!! I ordered the chicken tender basket for my son. The chicken was moist, juicy...not fried to perfection but still pretty tasty. I'm not a fan of coleslaw at all but I tasted it and to my surprise it was delicious! Decided to dine outside since it was a nice night out. For an appetizer we had the curry quail wings, and I must say I'd come here again and have that as an entreé. Tried out the grapefruit juice wouldn't waste my money on it if your not a fan of grapefruit. Wasn't sure on what to have but was informed that their kitchen closed at 11pm. So we decided to go with the southern fried chicken and they also recommended mashed potatoes and greens. The chicken wasn't anything special since they said it's the "most popular" thing on their menu I expected more. The Mashed potatoes tasted like they were straight out of a pack they even looked it too. & the greens just had a smoky taste to them nothing memorable. The slice of toast was good though lol . Maybe we got the wrong items but I was so underwhelmed with my dinner I didn't even want to try their dessert. Really disappointed by our brunch experience here for HRW. The restaurant is valet only (they block off the entire parking lot and force you to valet) and very loud and crowded inside, but I kind of expected that. I also expected subpar service because it was so busy, and I was correct. We started out with mimosas which were very subpar. They claim to have fresh juice, but I watched the bartender make them in giant batches. It is just champagne mixed with some kind of weird sparking juice. They were disappointing. We started with the hangover fries and mac and cheese. I asked for my egg over easy for my fries and they brought it over hard. Once I was able to find the waiter he brought it back to the kitchen and fixed the order. The fries were just ok. I wasn't a big fan of the chili on top. The mac and cheese was almost watery. It was not creamy how I think mac should be. We got the honey butter chicken benedict for our entrée. This was the biggest problem of the meal. My friend took her first bite and then apologized to me for spitting out her food. When I asked her what was wrong she showed me a giant bone that she definitely could have choked on. After that, we were very wary of every bite we put in out mouths. We found several other small bones. Neither the menu or our waiter warned us that the chicken would have bones. I was a little shocked because the chicken was covered in an egg and gravy. There was no way someone eating it could be aware of the bones unless they deconstructed the meal--which is exactly what we had to do. When I did this, I also realized that only one side of my chicken had been breaded. The food tasted good, but it was not enjoyable to eat because of the bones. To top it all off, when I pointed out my car to the valet he handed me my keys to go get it. I'm not mad that I got to drive my own car, but why force people to valet if you're just going to park my car for me then tell me to go get it? I can definitely do that and would prefer to do it myself. I've been to the other location and really liked the food. This location missed the mark. I won't be back. read more

Overall is a nice vibe for happy hour or get together for bites and drinks. We didn't have drinks but grabbed a bunch of items to eat. The Mac n cheese was shared and was ok. Not good but nothing spectacular. We had to have the fried chicken. I would say the inside was juicy but the outside could use more breading to really take it to the next level. For dessert we tried pecan pie and the cobbler. The pecans on the pie were delicious but the breading was wierd as it tasted to me like a cheap cinnamon bun :/ the cobbler had a nice biscuit taste but the flavoring was a little sweat for my taste. All in all the food was 3/5, service was 4/5 and ambience was 4/5. Great location off Washington and good parking. I would come here again but probably for drinks with friends read more

My husband and I travelled an hour and a half to visit MAX's. We both ordered the drink pictured which was pretty good. He ordered the French toast with a side of chicken strips, I ordered the hot honey wings. WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING AND I WISH I FOUGHT TO RECEIVE A FULL REFUND. My wings were half battered and had absolutely no flavor, even with them drowning in hot honey which missed on the flavor as tasted like it was just honey with red pepper flakes in it. I wish I took a picture but I was so disappointed, I barely ate one wing and left the rest there. His Creme Brulee French Toast Dinner was ok compared to my wings the French toast itself was good but for an extra $7 I was expecting more out of the chicken strips, they lacked flavor and were 2 small pieces. The ambiance was nice and the restaurant was clean. I may go back to explore the drink menu but you can absolutely miss me on the food. read more

Disappointing experience at Max's Wine Dive. The restaurant was 2/3 empty and they stuck me at the bar across from an unhappy wait staff looking into the kitchen. I didn't enjoy listening to waiters curse under their breath. The food was overpriced: $30 for three pieces of fried chicken and a glass of beer. The food they served me should have been better seasoned. The restaurant even forces its clientele to use their valet parking (both annoying and unnecessary). Dozens of empty parking spaces in their parking lot with little orange cones blocking every space. I do not know how it is possible that some reviewers have posted such different experiences than mine of this restaurant: it is almost as though they have been paid to write glowing comments. I will not eat at Max's Wine Dive again. read more

What an awesome experience! So glad to be a part of the Houston yelp elite community. Farrah always does an amazing job setting these things up! You could see just how the Managers and owners were so welcoming and appreciative of our business. They did everything to make sure that we were satisfied and serviced as best as possible. Every dessert course was absolutely delicious. Also appreciated how our server, Jeff, kept feeding us mimosa after mimosa. Overall, a great experience, great atmosphere, and good food. Some of the best and juiciest fried chicken that I've ever had. Wasn't a fan of the first course, cinnamon donut of some sort. Not because it was bad, just because I'm not a very big fan of cinnamon. The French toast was absolutely delicious. Perfect sweetness for me. Until I tried the birthday cake pancake. Lol. Even better than the French toast!! An unexpected visit on a Saturday night resulted in great service. An order of cauliflower hummus with pita bread was excellent. The lobster sliders however suffer from too much mayonnaise and not enough lobster. We ordered two glasses of wine; pours aren't particularly generous. I enjoyed this little experience. My sever was Angel she had ok service no major issues that won't get better with time. The ambiance is amazing. Their mimosas are awful flat and gross I can't believe they mess those up. The fried chicken is ok it's overrated but still good to eat. Great for groups and couples. I've been here twice. Both times for lunch. Beware they do get a huge lunch rush with not enough workers so come early, to leave early. I've had the stuffed peppers. They are amazing with so much flavor in each bite and a little heated kick. This is a must to share, if you're with a few people. I wanted to try their Max's Famous Southern Fried Chicken, but I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it. However, its highly recommended here. I ordered their Southern Fried Chicken Tender Basket, which I believe is pretty similar to their famous dish. It is not available for dinner, so I suggest ordering this portion for lunch if you want to try their chicken. I would love to come back here for their HH, for more stuffed peppers, and to try their famous chicken dish! Parking here is a pain during lunch. However, valet is free so take advantage of it, unless you want to round the parking lot. read more

Reservations poorly managed. Had to wait in car for a table although we had a reservation. Coed bathrooms lack attention for cleanliness. People table sitting even after paid check despite limited seating. Finally seated 5 persons in our party 1 hr 10 mins after scheduled reservation and to make matters worse, half of our orders came out 1 hr later and the other half 30 mins later. Went here for a Sunday brunch date with the wife, and it was....ok. The service: The service was wonderful, we had a reservation, although we got there right at 10, so I'm not sure one was needed, and we were sat promptly. The waitress did a fantastic job taking orders and helping with any questions. The bus boys did a fantastic job keep water filled and table clean The food: The food for me is what really made me say it was just ok. We tried some starters like sausage and gravy biscuit, the crispy deviled eggs, and pb&J monte Cristo bites. We also shared the southwest skillet entrees. The crispy eggs were a fun alternative to a traditional deviled egg. We added the crab for 5 bucks which was really a waste of money. It was a minuscule amount of crab, but the eggs were good. The sausage and gravy biscuit was nice, but it was 1 biscuit and gravy. The PBS and j bites in my opinion could use more jelly or maybe a jelly dipping sauce, they were also kind of cold. The skillet was average at best, the "salsa" was like a marinara sauce really. The food was good, but certainly not great. We also tried mimosas, the carmalized pineapple, had very little pineapple taste, the pomegranate was nothing special The cost: We had 4 mimosas, 3 apps, 1 entree and spent 73 or 88 with gratuity. Overall, I probably wont be back, with so many brunch options, especially if you are spending 40 bucks a person, you can do way better. read more

I would always hear people rave about Max's Wine Dive..so on 06/24/2017, I decided to give it a try to see what the hype was about. We arrived around 3:30 PM 4:00 PM, the restaurant offered complementary valet which is good, I guess. Valet takes up the general parking spots; parking spots you would usually park at any other restaurant. Okay, upon entering the restaurant, the hostess was friendly and greeted us and escorted us to our table. The table was pretty small yet high table. There wasn't room to put my handbag, I ended up putting my handbag behind me in my seat. Our server was good, he was able to recommend his favorite Moscato wine which he provided a sample of the two Moscatos offered. I ended up getting 1 glass which was $9 (overpriced to me). I ordered he fried chicken with collard greens and mashed potatoes. That dish is the dish that everyone always rave about so that's why I ended up getting it. My mother ordered the ribs with corn and potatoes. I truly enjoyed the fried chicken; it tasted better than the fried chicken I had at Kitchen 713 (sorry). the collard greens were pretty good too. My mother, however, WAS NOT a fan of the ribs. she stated that the ribs didn't have any meat on them, they didn't, so that was pretty disappointing because of the price. After we check out, my mom and I was in the car getting ready to drive off, when our server walks up to the car to ask: "was there a reason why I didn't get tipped? I've been out off training a couple of days and wanted your feedback to see why I didn't get tipped." WHAT KINDA SH*T IS THAT? I mean I've been a server so I know how important tipping is. But in reality, not everyone tips. There was plenty of times were I didn't get tipped and by no means did I chase patrons to ask them why they didn't tip me!!!! that was very awkward and not a good look I guess. But overall, the food is overpriced, yes the fried chicken was good but not worth the price. I'm sure it's just hype at this point. so that's why I give it 3/5 stars. They lied about availability (probably because we had two kids with us) fine whatever I get it it's more of an adult place, but when we ordered take out another time the order was completely messed up. My wife has been a fan of Max's Wine dive for a couple of years now thanks to their fried chicken, which I must admit is amazing. I have been there once in the past and had a decent enough experience overall and the food was great if a bit pricey. This is not a review of that visit. My wife and I had a reservation at Max's and we ended up getting there about 45 minutes early. They weren't busy so they had no trouble seating us. So far so good. There were no menus offered because they had the little barcodes on the tables. That's an example of using Covid to be lazy. Menus had to be wiped BEFORE Covid so really there should be no change there. It can be pretty tough to read a menu on a cellphone if you aren't familiar with it. We sat there for several minutes before anyone came to our table at which time we requested actual menus. Several minutes later the server brought two menus which were just a bunch of papers stapled together like a high school history report. After dropping the menus on the table he walked away without taking our drink order. So we sat. As we sat there we were bombarded by the a tinny, ear piercing sound system playing old pop music that was turned up way too loud. I'm fine with music but holy crap it was obnoxiously loud and so trebly that is was giving me a headache. If you're going to play it loud at least make it sound decent! We sat for some time longer before my wife walked to the wine racks to see what the wine selection might be since the employees engaged in conversation at the hostess station had no interest in us whatsoever. While she was there a server did stop by and ask to take our order even though my wife was clearly not at the table so I don't know what he was thinking. I told him that we would order when she sat back down (she was like 15 feet away). I guess he took that to mean that we didn't want to order anything at all because he never came back. We sat for another ten minutes or so. Another annoying detail was that the air conditioning was set uncomfortably cold. I see quite a few restaurants do this and it's usually set for the comfort of the employees who are working around heat or doing a lot of walking. That is beyond stupid. The temperature should be set for the comfort of the customers. The 20-25 minutes that my wife sat there wondering if we were going to get to place an order were spent uncomfortably cold. I can only imagine how quickly our food would have cooled had we actually ordered...... Having wasted too much of what was supposed to be a fun date night getting blasted by tinny speakers, NOT getting any service whatsoever and freezing, we decided to leave. As we walked past the hostess and handed her our menus/class assignments (seriously, what in the hell is wrong with these people? They used to have actual menus) she asked us if we were moving outside to which we politely responded that we were leaving. She didn't even ask why or seem to care one bit that customers were leaving without even ordering. Max's Wine Dive is an unpleasant, obnoxious little restaurant operated by apathetic little 20-somethings who aren't smart enough to understand that if they don't take care of the customers that bring money into their establishment those customers will leave without spending any of that money. I heard that the other location closed down due to bad service and lackluster quality and it seems that is the destiny of this one as well. Frankly, if this is how they operate I am anxious for Max's Wine Dive to close it's doors forever so I can spend money in the business that moves in once that property is vacant. *UPDATE* The owner of Max's Wine Dive posted a response to my review that was clearly a generic prepared response that asked me to email them at an address that is apparently undeliverable. The response asks for details of the visit which I think I spelled out fairly well in the text above. Clearly they couldn't even be bothered to read it. I think that this is a good indication that the problem is not just the apathetic millennial waitstaff but horribly incompetent management. I've been coming here for years and have never been dissatisfied but today I was extremely disappointed. I drove from the West side of town to this location because I was craving their mac n cheese. I called and placed my order and they told me it would take 15 mins. I waited over 35 mins and when I initially came into pay they told me they'd bring my order to my car which was directly outside their front doors. After the 35 mins I called and the host told me my order was ready right then. That wasn't a coincidence because when my order was brought to me everything was cold. They fries, burger, and mac n cheese were cold because they were just sitting there. I absolutely hate cold food it totally takes away from its experience. I made a reservation beforehand for 11:00 a.m and was seated with ease. It is a really small restaurant. I ordered shrimp and grits and red velvet pancakes. My guest ordered chicken and waffles. The red velvet pancakes were great. The cream cheese topping was awesome. My grits were horrible. I just have specified a little thick because they were a watery mess. The chicken and waffles that my guest had came in a large portion and I was told they were just OK..the grits were very disappointing. They were pretty pricy. I really want to try the lobster dish.
