    Matū Philly Cheesesteak
    Ryan S.

We have had the tasting menu here before, but we wanted to come for lunch to try the famous Philly cheesesteak. We were seated quickly on a Friday after a 10 minute wait and the waiter was very nice. Our cheesesteaks took a bit longer and so they gave us the chips on the house which was a nice touch. The cheesesteak was what we came to try, and our verdict is that it is a great cheesesteak, but we prefer more classic cheesesteaks. The beef quality was good, but we wanted the cheese to be more flavorful. The bun is also crisp, which we were not used to. It has a lot of sesame seeds so if you like that, this is the cheesesteak for you. Overall, we prefer the classic menu at Matū, but the cheesesteak was worth a try!

MATU WOW. This lil joint had been on my radar for a while..at least 2 or 3 years. Finally crossed it off the list, and it was quite the joyous and memorable dining experience. I really gotta respect their dedication to red meat and the holy art of cooking a damn good steak. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is essentially what I'm looking for in a restaurant. Basically hits on all cylinders and checks off all the critical boxes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I don't want to sound all dramatic and such, but I'm dying to go back and try all the other items I didn't have, as well as check out the bar experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I spoke to some locals outside before they opened, and they weren't just lovely -- they also painted a pretty picture of what the overall vibe is here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's clear a lot of people in the Beverly Hills and Hollywood Hills area love coming here very frequently. Our server, who I assumed is named Nolan because that's what's shown on the receipt, was very accommodating, kind, and easy to talk to. I think he did a fantastic job dealing with my difficult, picky gf. Haha. I can't say anything was less than stellar. The croquettes in that celery purée stuff were phenomenal. Garlic bread was seasoned and baked to perfection. The bone broth sipper was nourishing af. French fries were perhaps the best I've had in years. Broccolini was fresh, high quality, and complimented the steak very well. I'm bummed we only got to try just the ribeye when it came to the cuts, but my gf did not want to order anything under medium or medium rare that night, so that was a bummer. It's her loss! The panna cotta was the creamiest sweet treat in all of LaLa Land. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a great place, and it's a top-tier steakhouse.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] SoCal sometimes lacks places of this caliber that NY, Chicago, and SF / Napa have, but this place is a very close contender to some of the top cream-of-the-crop, steak-centered restaurants in the country. Chef's kiss, Señoritos and Señoritas.

Gin Martini with Blue Cheese Olives

Having experienced the Cheesesteak Lunch solo and incurring my wife's wrath for not bringing her along, we returned to Matu for our Anniversary Dinner. The Host welcomed us graciously, wished us a Happy Anniversary, and seated us immediately at a cozy table in the corner of the busy dining room. The serving team quickly approached, filling our water glasses and again welcoming us with big smiles. We'd had some cocktails before arriving, so my wife decided to stick with a Diet Coke for dinner, but I ordered a martini that was perfectly poured, icy cold, and topped with very fresh, blue cheese olives--a great start. Interestingly, Matu does not offer a filet mignon à la carte. The only way to order a filet (my wife's favorite cut) is to order the Filet Dinner, which is a 4-course tasting menu. Perhaps they just can't get enough filet at the quality they insist on -- I don't know -- but we decided to order the Filet Dinner and share the intermediary courses, with me ordering a small Ribeye and Creamed Spinach as my entree. The meal begins with a small cup of 24-hour Bone Broth that arrives steaming hot and packed with beefy flavor. The rich broth actually coats your tongue a bit, and the flavor lingers nicely. Next would have been Steak Tartare, but my wife substituted the Japanese Caesar, which was exceptionally tasty, with flavors in the dressing I simply couldn't place, but would happily eat for days. The last of the appetizers was a duo of Beef Croquettas -- also rich and flavorful with a savory sauce that amped up the richness even further. I don't know if I could eat an entire order (the full appetizer comes with 4 croquettas). Finally, on to the steak. My wife's Filet was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with a deep flavor. My own Ribeye was equally tender, with a rich flavor from the marbling. Both steaks were served the house way, which is warm and red in the middle, with a lovely crust from live fire. These folks know how to make a steak, that's for sure. Creamed spinach was much the same as most places... still, very satisfying and a great accompaniment. For dessert, we ordered the Strawberry Panna Cotta, which was served with a celebratory candle for our anniversary. Mildly sweet with a slight tang from the berries, this was a light and refreshing way to cap the meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I have to say, this was an excellent dinner with fine service in a wonderful atmospher[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]e. Additionally, the prices are quite reasonable for the location and the quality of the food, and our dinner here was $200 LESS than our Valentine's dinner at Cipriani, so I have to say this would be your much better bet for a celebratory night out. Though my wife insists we come back soon for lunch so she can get that amazing cheesesteak... and I'm totally willing to join her LOL!

Ribeye Ribeye or NY Dinner for 2

I definitely need to come back to Matu again! My husband and I had the Ribeye Dinner for 2, which had four courses. Every single course was great. Included was: 1) bone broth, 2) steak tartare (I subbed my portion for the 47 salad), 3) Picanha skewers, and 4) ribeye steak and Japanese Caesar to share. Absolutely no notes. Our favorite course was definitely the last, with the ribeye and Japanese Caesar. Everything was delicious and we felt the price was reasonable for the quality and variety of dishes. Our server, Jasmine, was also great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great ambiance in the restaurant as well![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We made a reservation so didn't have any issues with waiting. Our service was also pretty quick. We used the valet parking for convenience. We definitely would like to come back and try more from Matu!

We did the "Lock, Stock & Barrel" experience for 4 people at $115 per person, and it was fantastic. We also added a few extra dishes, including the maitake mushrooms and picanha skewers, and everything was absolutely delicious. Between the four of us, we enjoyed several cocktails and two bottles of wine, bringing our total to about $1,035. The food, drinks, and overall experience made for a truly memorable steak night.

I decided to try Matu for their halal options. We confirmed with the waiter that almost everything is halal except the beef croquettes and braised beef cheek. The waiter and staff were friendly and professional. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is what you would expect of a steakhouse. Elegant but crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the ribeye dinner for 2 and here's what I thought of each dish: 1. Beef bone broth 3/5 - this comes very hot so took a minute or two to actually drink it. It was good but nothing more than a normal bone broth. 2. Beef tartare 4/5 - I was nervous eating this one as I never had raw beef before. The flavor however was very delicious and reminded me a bit like sashimi. While it's not something I would reach for just because of the thought of raw beef I am so glad I tried it as someone who only eats halal. It was very delicious. 3. Picanha skewers 4/5 - the meat itself was very fatty and charred on the outside really well. I could easily pull off a piece from the skewer. The sauces were an interesting pair and went well with the skewers. 4. Japanese Caesar iceberg 5/5 - as someone who loves cheese and Caesar dressing, this was absolutely delicious! It's basically half of a lettuce head in which they spread the dressing and cheese on top. The dressing itself had a good tang and I appreciate the amount of cheese that they put on top. Would get again. 5. Ribeye to share 3/5 - this was a good ribeye. It was warm throughout and went well with the sides. They only allow for one temperature but I waited said he can ask to have it a little more cooked as I am more of a medium steak person. I would say when they have side dishes that shine the steak did feel a little lackluster. Addition twice baked potato 5/5 - this was not included in the standard ribeye for 2. We added this on top and am I glad we did. It was so good. Crispy on the outside and soft like mash potatoes on the inside. I would come back just for this. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, Matu is a nice restaurant to go to if you want to do a fancy dinner.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Matū Philly Cheesesteak and House-made Wagyu Potato Chips
    Peter C.

I can see why this is often rated the best cheesesteak in LA! The freshly baked sesame roll takes the sandwich to the next level for me and adds a nice depth of flavor in each bite. Plenty of wagyu beef that is seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The cooper sharp cheese is a nice tough but not overpowering. Roasted long hot pepper was not hot, but it would be nice if it was. I'd skip out on the house-made potato chips next time as they were overly salted and nothing special. Service was great and quick with lunch being bar seating only. Will be back for more and now I want to try the dinner!

Everyone already knows their cheese steaks are divine. We had high expectations and they were met. However the service was absolutely amazing as well. Christopher was our waiter and we really appreciated him. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance was also great everyone's sitting at the bar and feels nice and cozy without feeling cramped[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

My husband had a work lunch here today. Sadly, I did not go :__-( It was for two people, and they both got a cheesesteak and shared a salad and potato chips. Hubby brought me home a sandwich :-) :-) :-) SO sweet!!!! So, naturally, I jumped onto to yelp to let you know how it is to go.... Excellent! lol I have eaten at the bar but this is the first time brought home and reheated it. I can confirm that it is just as great! Why? Because they give you reheating instructions and they are perfect! Sandwich is wrapped with a scan sticker that tells you what to do. I re wrapped the sandwich in foil and placed in my air fryer on the bake function and it was deeeeelish!!!!!! OMG! This sandwich is my favorite steak sandwich. So nice to know it's just as yummy to go. I would recommend it to anyone. Great restaurant....dinner too!

This review is specifically for the cheesesteak as I have not tried the dinner portion of Matu. This all coming from a Philly transplant. First, the overall set up for eating here and ordering. We arrived around 1:15 and were informed they were taking no more waitlist for seating. Only the bar area is open for lunch so there aren't a ton of seats. The waiting area is a bit crammed and it's very difficult to tell who is in line to sit and who is waiting for a to go order. It was pretty hectic. Luckily they let us place a to go order and we were able to sit outside on a couple lounge chairs located in front of the restaurant. The food took about 30 minutes to come out. We did a lap around the neighborhood and grabbed some coffee nearby while we waited. Nice part of town for sure. The sandwich itself is very tasty. Tender meat, nice flavor and I am a huge fan of Italian long hot peppers so it was nice to see one in LA as they are not common over here. The seeded roll was nice, if not a bit over toasted on the sesame seeds. Overall the sandwich gets a solid 8/10 for me on taste alone. My issue with this spot is the price and the size of the sandwich. We got one sandwich and it came out to almost $32 after the mandatory 18% tip. Who am I tipping? I had to wait in line and check on if my sandwich was ready four different times. It's also a skinny roll relative to something you'd get in Philly and pretty much double the price. That's the main issue with places trying to elevate food that is traditionally inexpensive. This is a $20 sandwich max and deserves to be served at 2AM after bar hopping. I'm not sure if a high end cheesesteak works for me conceptually. It's meant to be comforting and cheap. Going here was both stressful and expensive. Overall I give the experience a 3.5/5 but am rounding up because the sandwich was good, just overpriced.

We stopped into Matū after having dinner at another amazing Beverly Hills restaurant, hoping to grab a drink and get a feel for the vibe. Unfortunately, the service experience at the front was so disappointing that we never even made it past the host stand. When we walked in, we asked if we could sit at the bar which had three open seats. The hostess immediately told us the bar had an hour wait. I was confused, since it's a bar... and we had just come from Jade and Wally's, where the bars are extremely popular, always packed, and first-come, first-served like almost every other high-end spot in the area. I asked why we couldn't sit in the open seats, and she said they had four people waiting and were holding all the seats until four spots opened up together, meaning nobody could sit at the bar until that happened. There were two open seats together and then one person and then another open seat. She repeated that the wait would be at least an hour, maybe longer, even though multiple seats were empty right in front of us. The hostess was curt, dismissive, and honestly borderline rude in the way she explained it. The policy itself makes absolutely no sense and feels like it's doing them a major disservice. Holding up a bar with open seats for a party of 4 that can't sit until who knows when instead of seating guests who simply want a drink, is baffling. So unfortunately, I can't speak to the food or drinks, but I can say the service and first impression were not good at all. Beverly Hills has too many amazing spots with great hospitality to deal with that kind of confusion and attitude. Big bummer, and we won't be returning.

Came here on Valentine's Day with a reservation and we were sat within 10 minutes. The service throughout our meal was great - our server was helpful, attentive & warm. If the Rustic Ribeye was what we thought it would be, they would've definitely got a 5 because everything else was really really good! We got the Matū dinner for 2 and upgraded to the Rustic Ribeye. I think my favorite dishes were the filet with the 47 salad & the beef tartare. The beef tartare had great flavor - savory, a little salty, a bit creamy from the egg & good aromatics.

I had high expectations for MATŪ given its reputation, and while the food largely delivered, the overall experience fell short due to service issues. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Unfortunately, our initial table was extremely close to a very loud neighboring party, making conversation difficult. To the restaurant's credit, the staff accommodated our request to move, and the new table significantly improved the experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was excellent. We ordered the Dinner for Two, and every component was well executed and enjoyable. The quality of the beef was evident, and it was clear why MATŪ has built such a strong reputation. The cocktails were also well made. Where the experience began to unravel was the service. Wine service took roughly 20 minutes, dessert was noticeably delayed, and our server seemed to disappear for extended periods throughout the evening. The most frustrating part came at the end of the meal when it took more than 25 minutes to receive the check. When it finally arrived, it was delivered by a manager in a manner that felt dismissive rather than hospitable. To make matters worse, an automatic gratuity had already been added to the bill. While I understand the practice in some situations, it felt particularly disappointing given the level of service we received throughout the evening. MATŪ serves outstanding food, and that is what earns this review more than a few stars. However, hospitality is about more than what comes out of the kitchen. For a restaurant operating at this price point, the service should match the quality of the food. Unfortunately, on this visit, it did not. I left impressed by the meal but disappointed by the overall dining experience, and I'm not sure I would return.

Hi Joy. The 47 salad does not have dairy or eggs in the dressing. The chocolate cake has dairy and is not vegan.

Does the restaurant serve dinner menu at lunch time too?

They are currently open for lunch Wed through Sun with their cheesesteak menu only. Their dinner menu is not available. The restaurant side is closed, so service is only at the bar.

The caviar omakase is the must order thing here. Everything is very small bites, but if you are mostly there for drinks then à la carte is a good option. The omakase was fantastic - nice sized portions of caviar, paired with thoughtful items like a mini lobster roll, a salmon burger, and even ice cream. The drinks are also delightful - you can taste the notes of every ingredient and nothing was too overpowering or unbalanced. But the service is by far the main reason we'll be back. The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly, on top of being knowledgeable and presenting the menu in a well practiced way. They made this birthday dinner so special and went above and beyond. They do automatically add gratuity but I would've tipped more than that if possible. We ended up at the Maybourne Bar in the Maybourne hotel, a solid B+ lobby bar that I'd visit again under similar circumstances. The space was attractive but the vibe was strange, if not uncomfortable. Just weirdly bright lighting and a different crowd from the usual L.A. bar scene (hotel, Beverly Hills). It was pretty quiet at 10:00 on a Saturday night, and we were able to grab seats at the bar. Service was fast and polite. We ordered a Midas Touch and a Big in Japan, both decent cocktails that cost a full $30 apiece. The Midas Touch was a colorful spicy margarita with El Tesoro Maybourne Edition Reposado, Empirical Ayuuk, Grand Marnier Louis Alexandre, saffron, lemon, and honey. Big in Japan was a Gold Rush variation with Hibiki Harmony, sudachi honey, lemon, sansho pepper, and yuzu bitters. There are better, more interesting cocktail bars all over L.A., but I'd recommend the Maybourne Bar if you're staying at the hotel or otherwise looking for an upscale bar in downtown Beverly Hills. You can get food, too, though most of it seems to involve caviar.

10/10 experience! My favorite part of the evening was the service. From the moment I walked in,…read moreeveryone was warm, accommodating, and genuinely knowledgeable. I hate that I can't remember my server's name because he was phenomenal. I don't drink alcohol, but he recommended a few mocktails that were absolutely delicious. He also guided almost all of our food and dessert choices, and every recommendation was spot on. I originally made a reservation for indoor seating, but since it was such a beautiful day, we decided to sit outside by the pool. It ended up being the perfect choice. There atmosphere was relaxing, the noise level made conversation easy, and the view was beautiful. For food, we ordered the Pappardelle al Ragù, which was delicious. The pasta itself was perfectly cooked with great flavor. I wouldn't have minded a little more protein, but it was still a really enjoyable dish. We also had the Little Gem Caesar with chicken, a classic done exceptionally well. The standout, however, was the Diavola pizza. The combination of spicy soppressata with the honey drizzle was absolutely top tier, and the soft, airy crust brought everything together perfectly. It was easily my favorite dish of the meal. To drink, we had a couple of non alcoholic Cosmojitos, which were refreshing, flavorful, and a great complement to the meal. We closed out the evening with the homemade carrot cake, and wow it was the cake of my dreams. Perfectly moist, incredibly flavorful, and just the right level of sweetness without being overpowering. It was the perfect ending to an already fantastic meal. Overall, this was an outstanding dining experience with exceptional service, delicious food, and a beautiful ambiance. I can't wait to come back!
