I'm a big fan of my steak on the rarer side, and Matū absolutely delivered. The braised beef cheek was probably the highlight of the night for me. It was unbelievably tender, rich, and one of the most memorable bites of the meal. After finishing the Dinner for Two, which really showcased the quality of the meat, we decided to split a cheesesteak since "that's what they're known for." When it arrived, it looked incredible. Unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended for me. The meat tasted oddly oily. I'm not sure if it was the cut, the preparation, or even the cheese, but it came across as heavy and greasy compared to the beautifully simple, clean flavors of the steak dinner. The tartare is incredibly flavourful despite its minimalist presentation. Thin, lightly toasted crostini accompany it without overpowering the beef, though I did ask for extra slices just to finish every bite. The eight-hour braised beef cheek was one of my favourite courses. So tender and moist that you could practically eat it with a spoon, the richness is balanced by a silky celeriac purée that ties everything together beautifully. It's the kind of dish that immediately makes you want another serving. Even their '47' salad leans heavily into the restaurant's beef-first philosophy, featuring more steak than greens. The 3-ounce centre-cut filet was impressively tender for such a lean cut, and although it arrived rarer than I'd typically order, it worked perfectly. At Matu, diners aren't asked how they'd like their steak cooked. The kitchen prepares it to the chef's specifications, trusting the quality of the beef and their technique. As for the romaine leaves underneath, they're coated in a signature dressing that tastes remarkably similar to Caesar, despite being made without dairy or eggs, then finished with a generous showering of Parmigiano. After all that beef, you'd think sharing a 12-ounce ribeye would feel excessive. Somehow, it didn't. The steak is prepared simply, allowing the quality of the wagyu to speak for itself, with crispy grilled broccolini providing a garlicky contrast alongside it. A small dish of salt is presented at the beginning of the meal, though Matu intentionally keeps the seasoning restrained. Personally, I appreciated the lighter touch and never felt the need to add more. We have had the tasting menu here before, but we wanted to come for lunch to try the famous Philly cheesesteak. We were seated quickly on a Friday after a 10 minute wait and the waiter was very nice. Our cheesesteaks took a bit longer and so they gave us the chips on the house which was a nice touch. The cheesesteak was what we came to try, and our verdict is that it is a great cheesesteak, but we prefer more classic cheesesteaks. The beef quality was good, but we wanted the cheese to be more flavorful. The bun is also crisp, which we were not used to. Having experienced the Cheesesteak Lunch solo and incurring my wife's wrath for not bringing her along, we returned to Matu for our Anniversary Dinner. The Host welcomed us graciously, wished us a Happy Anniversary, and seated us immediately at a cozy table in the corner of the busy dining room. The serving team quickly approached, filling our water glasses and again welcoming us with big smiles. We'd had some cocktails before arriving, so my wife decided to stick with a Diet Coke for dinner, but I ordered a martini that was perfectly poured, icy cold, and topped with very fresh, blue cheese olives--a great start. Interestingly, Matu does not offer a filet mignon à la carte. The only way to order a filet (my wife's favorite cut) is to order the Filet Dinner, which is a 4-course tasting menu. Perhaps they just can't get enough filet at the quality they insist on -- I don't know -- but we decided to order the Filet Dinner and share the intermediary courses, with me ordering a small Ribeye and Creamed Spinach as my entree. The meal begins with a small cup of 24-hour Bone Broth that arrives steaming hot and packed with beefy flavor. The rich broth actually coats your tongue a bit, and the flavor lingers nicely. Next would have been Steak Tartare, but my wife substituted the Japanese Caesar, which was exceptionally tasty, with flavors in the dressing I simply couldn't place, but would happily eat for days. The last of the appetizers was a duo of Beef Croquettas -- also rich and flavorful with a savory sauce that amped up the richness even further. I don't know if I could eat an entire order (the full appetizer comes with 4 croquettas). Finally, on to the steak. My wife's Filet was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with a deep flavor. My own Ribeye was equally tender, with a rich flavor from the marbling. Both steaks were served the house way, which is warm and red in the middle, with a lovely crust from live fire. These folks know how to make a steak, that's for sure. Creamed spinach was much the same as most places... still, very satisfying and a great accompaniment. For dessert, we ordered the Strawberry Panna Cotta, which was served with a celebratory candle for our anniversary. Mildly sweet with a slight tang from the berries, this was a light and refreshing way to cap the meal. Included was: 1) bone broth, 2) steak tartare (I subbed my portion for the 47 salad), 3) Picanha skewers, and 4) ribeye steak and Japanese Caesar to share. Absolutely no notes. Our favorite course was definitely the last, with the ribeye and Japanese Caesar. Everything was delicious and we felt the price was reasonable for the quality and variety of dishes. Picanha skewers 4/5 - the meat itself was very fatty and charred on the outside really well. I could easily pull off a piece from the skewer. The sauces were an interesting pair and went well with the skewers. 4. Japanese Caesar iceberg 5/5 - as someone who loves cheese and Caesar dressing, this was absolutely delicious! It's basically half of a lettuce head in which they spread the dressing and cheese on top. The dressing itself had a good tang and I appreciate the amount of cheese that they put on top. Would get again. 5. Ribeye to share 3/5 - this was a good ribeye. It was warm throughout and went well with the sides. They only allow for one temperature but I waited said he can ask to have it a little more cooked as I am more of a medium steak person. This review is specifically for the cheesesteak as I have not tried the dinner portion of Matu. This all coming from a Philly transplant. First, the overall set up for eating here and ordering. We arrived around 1:15 and were informed they were taking no more waitlist for seating. Only the bar area is open for lunch so there aren't a ton of seats. The waiting area is a bit crammed and it's very difficult to tell who is in line to sit and who is waiting for a to go order. It was pretty hectic. Luckily they let us place a to go order and we were able to sit outside on a couple lounge chairs located in front of the restaurant. The food took about 30 minutes to come out. We did a lap around the neighborhood and grabbed some coffee nearby while we waited. Nice part of town for sure. The sandwich itself is very tasty. Tender meat, nice flavor and I am a huge fan of Italian long hot peppers so it was nice to see one in LA as they are not common over here. The seeded roll was nice, if not a bit over toasted on the sesame seeds. Overall the sandwich gets a solid 8/10 for me on taste alone. My issue with this spot is the price and the size of the sandwich. We got one sandwich and it came out to almost $32 after the mandatory 18% tip. Who am I tipping? I had to wait in line and check on if my sandwich was ready four different times. It's also a skinny roll relative to something you'd get in Philly and pretty much double the price. That's the main issue with places trying to elevate food that is traditionally inexpensive. This is a $20 sandwich max and deserves to be served at 2AM after bar hopping. I'm not sure if a high end cheesesteak works for me conceptually. It's meant to be comforting and cheap. Going here was both stressful and expensive. I was confused, since it's a bar... and we had just come from Jade and Wally's, where the bars are extremely popular, always packed, and first-come, first-served like almost every other high-end spot in the area. I asked why we couldn't sit in the open seats, and she said they had four people waiting and were holding all the seats until four spots opened up together, meaning nobody could sit at the bar until that happened. There were two open seats together and then one person and then another open seat. She repeated that the wait would be at least an hour, maybe longer, even though multiple seats were empty right in front of us. The hostess was curt, dismissive, and honestly borderline rude in the way she explained it. The policy itself makes absolutely no sense and feels like it's doing them a major disservice. Holding up a bar with open seats for a party of 4 that can't sit until who knows when instead of seating guests who simply want a drink, is baffling. So unfortunately, I can't speak to the food or drinks, but I can say the service and first impression were not good at all. Wine service took roughly 20 minutes, dessert was noticeably delayed, and our server seemed to disappear for extended periods throughout the evening. The most frustrating part came at the end of the meal when it took more than 25 minutes to receive the check. When it finally arrived, it was delivered by a manager in a manner that felt dismissive rather than hospitable. To make matters worse, an automatic gratuity had already been added to the bill. While I understand the practice in some situations, it felt particularly disappointing given the level of service we received throughout the evening. MATŪ serves outstanding food, and that is what earns this review more than a few stars. However, hospitality is about more than what comes out of the kitchen. For a restaurant operating at this price point, the service should match the quality of the food. Unfortunately, on this visit, it did not. Unlike a regular Philly Cheese Steak, the Matu version is much more refined and less messy. I really love the Wagyu Ribeye meat that they use, followed by the Cooper Sharp Cheese. Great balance of flavors, I'd also recommend getting their house made potato chips and a sprite to wash everything down. It literally melted in my mouth, and had such rich, deep flavor that I couldn't stop savoring it. The appetizers were just as impressive. This is our second visit back whenever we are in town to see my daughter. We've always gone for the Dinner for 2 and enjoyed it both times ! It is a 5 courses dinner and starts out with the 24-Hour Bone Broth, Steak Tartare, Japanese accent 8-Hour Braised Beef Cheek, celeriac puree 3 oz Center Cut Filet with '47' Salad To share - 12 oz Ribeye or 11 oz NY Strip and Grilled broccolini, garlic. Everything was very delish! The service was good. It is a very intimate setting and space is a little tight but they were very accommodating. At about $500 for two, Matū felt a tad less than. The beef was absolutely divine, only cooked medium rare, to slight more (if you're a medium well, to well done person- this place is NOT for you). The caviar potato was served warm, and lacked depth and flavor. The bone broth was served piping hot, and it was delicious. Lobster was good, served butter soft. A good choice to order. Moreover, the chips were one of our favorite items. The mushrooms were burnt, and the garlic bread had a slight sour taste to it due to the cheese... Desert was the best part of the meal and the French press is a must order. Smooth and delightful. Our service was impeccable. Joe was absolutely a delight to have as our server. A dark ambiance of any other steakhouse was expected and that's exactly what it served. Small in size, so make a reservation. Limited parking, valet is available. Matū is definitely the place to go for a sumptuous steak. They serve Grass Fed Wagyu. On the most recent visit, we came for my husband's birthday. I made the reservation on their website. They texted me on the day of to confirm the reservation. We found metered parking on the street halfway down the block on Beverly Dr. There is a Valet stand available out front for $15. The first time hubby & I came here was for lunch. We shared a Matū Philly Cheesesteak ($24) & House-made Wagyu Potato Chips ($4) back on April 6, 2025. It is a pretty exceptional Cheesesteak! We also shared the 24-Hr Bone Broth ($9) & the "47" Salad ($16). Everything was so delicious! They only serve the cheesesteaks at the bar counter & is available on a first come first served basis. On this past visit, March 8, 2026, we originally chose to get the Rustic Ribeye Dinner for 2, but the meat had too much sinew in it for us to want to chew through. When asked how it was, we decided to tell them how we felt instead of politely saying it was okay. We were then offered the Ribeye and reluctantly accepted the offer. We really don't like to complain or cause an issue. So, what we had for dinner was the Ribeye Dinner for 2 for $148. It includes: *24-Hr Bone Broth - nice and rich beefy broth! *Steak Tartare - flavorful and tender tartare! Hubby doesn't typically eat raw meat, but he managed to eat this. *Picanha Skewers with Tahini Sauce & Zhoug - these were nicely charred on the exterior and held excellent flavor. I appreciated the grilled tomatoes *Japanese Caesar - one shared between 2 people - this was pretty unique and was refreshing to eat with the ribeye and after eating all the other meats *13-14oz Ribeye - one shared between 2 people - the ribeye is a great cut! They thinly slice the very rare meat making it super easy to eat. We enjoyed it fresh from the kitchen and as leftovers. It remained tender and moreish. *Extra - Arturo's Panna Cotta topped with macerated strawberries ($12) - this was really tasty! The macerated strawberries paired well with the silky panna cotta. Samantha made sure all the diners in the restaurant were enjoying their dinners. Service is quite efficient and polite. We received fresh utensils and plates as needed for each course. We interacted with Nolan, Julia, & Samantha. Nolan initially started us out and then Julia seemed to replace him. Samantha wanted to make up for our disappointment with the Rustic Cut Ribeye. My son has been hyping the Matū Philly Cheesesteak for ages, and he finally brought one over the other day. One bite in and--wow. This is the best cheesesteak I've ever had in LA. Maybe anywhere. Full stop. The Wagyu ribeye + sirloin combo is sliced thin, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and loaded with melted Cooper Sharp cheese and grilled onions. Pure flavor. Pure joy. But let's talk about the bun, because this thing deserves its own Yelp review. It's that rare, East Coast-style sesame roll you almost never find in SoCal--lightly toasted, thin golden exterior, super soft and buttery inside. Not dense. Not hard. Not "why is my mouth getting scratched?" Perfect. Absolutely perfect. The roasted long hot pepper brings a deep, delicious heat and rounds out the whole sandwich. And if you're heat-sensitive, no problem--just remove most of it. You still get all the amazing flavor with a softer spice level. We ordered this to-go, and even their takeout service was smooth, friendly, and fast--everything packaged perfectly and still warm when it got to me. Review is for takeout. My cheesesteak was decent but didn't meet my expectations as I was told this is the best one outside of Philly. The pepper definitely added a different yet enjoyable aspect but it was on the drier side & wasn't hefty at all. Had high hopes for Matu especially after hearing they were going to expand into the SGV. We just missed the first seating so the hostess said maybe 30-45 minutes for a seat at the bar. As my buddy and I had plans at 2, we decided to just place a take out order on Postmates. To our surprise, the estimate on Postmates was about the same! We opted to keep the take out order and headed next door for coffee as we waited for the food. My order actually took close to an hour before it was ready. The seeded roll was good and the beef was pretty flavorful. What was disappointing was that there wasn't much cheese at all in the sandwich. Not quite sure why some Yelpers stated they had a lot of cheese but we didn't notice or taste much of it (I ordered 5 sandwiches). The hot pepper was super spicy so be sure you can handle the heat before adding. I also ordered the wagyu potato chips which were really bland. I honestly enjoyed the day old cheesesteak more as I toasted the sandwich in our Balmuda which added a nice crispy texture. Although the sandwich was decent, not sure it justifies the price point especially with the added 18% health charge adder. Matu at the bar is the way to go. No reservations, you will wait but they take your name and there are plenty of spots nearby to while away the time. It's a short menu and I suggest you try EVERYTHING. I am from Philly. No part of that sandwich is a Philly cheesesteak, but it's the best Philly cheesesteak I've ever had. The bone broth is so flavorful, the chips are perfect. The ambiance is great and the staff are lovely. 10/10 read more

Wonderful experience. We came to celebrate our 7th year anniversary and our server, Sophie, took great care of us throughout the meal. We ordered the Matu steak dinner (5 courses), a few cocktails, beef tallow fries, and dessert at the end. I liked the peppery bone broth which comes piping hot and is comforting to start the meal with. The steak in the following courses was served warm throughout, and rarely needed the additional salt that is offered with the meal. The beef tallow fries had the perfect amount of crunch and I loved our fresh strawberry panna cotta. Matu also offers mocktails upon request.
