Happy hour cocktails
Victoria M.

My friend and I popped here for reverse happy hour following a baseball game. We honestly were just looking for like a quick bite and maybe a drink. The bar was relatively empty when we walked in around 10:30. Being able to sit was really easy and there was quite a bit of space. Our bartender was very attentive and quickly took our order and we received our drinks pretty quickly. Everything up to this point was great, and Service continued to be very consistent and good. When it comes to the food, though, I honestly wasn't impressed. My last memories of matchbox Pizza, specifically the fire and spicy pizza, were so good. The product that I received was not reminiscent of that. The pizza itself wasn't that spicy. It was also so thin it was almost comical. The sushi addition is new for the restaurant and I was curious. I had the shrimp tempura and it was OK, nothing spectacular or amazing, but it was good. My one complaint is that it came on top of a bed of just random sauce, which was kind of gross. My friend had the truffle pizza and it was delicious. The aroma of truffle was so overwhelming and she really enjoyed it. I will say the price of our meal for 2-10 inch pizzas, two drinks (one glass of wine, one cocktail), and two appetizers was $60 total. Despite not being the best meal, for a late night, quick grab when you don't wanna spend too much money. This is a really good spot.

Came here for a business lunch. Ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. Waitress was great--told me ahead of time the avocado wasn't going to be ripe. Ok bummer. But didn't expect the moldy tomato on the sandwich. Sent it back--they tried again and I think reheated the same chicken breast. Couldn't even cut it with a knife and fork. Huge waste of time and money. No thanks.

Stopped in before a show over at the Bloomberg Theater at John's Hopkins. No reservation and we were able to be sat right away at 6:30p. Definitely the last of the few to be able to walk up as the place was very full! We were tucked in the back which was a little tough for convos as it felt like an echo chamber. Pizza was so good. We just wanted a quick pizza and water before our show and this hit the spot. Burrata hot honey. Nice thing crust that held up.

We came here for a group lunch. Matchbox has lots of seating and is good for large groups. They had large tv screens showing the latest sports news. The atmosphere was lively during a weekday lunch. They also had WiFi available. They have a $15 lunch special where you can get a small personal pizza and a cup of soup or side salad. I ordered the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich ($19) which comes with a side of fries and a pickle spear. It was just okay. They serve shoestring fries - just like McDonalds, but not as golden and not as crispy. The sandwich had good structure and was filling, but the chicken was bland and dry. I could've used some more sauce. I think I'm used to Nando's chicken which is moister and full of saucy flavor. Other people at the table ordered the fish and chips ($24) which looked good - it came with two large, meaty pieces of cod and the same shoestring fries. Also on the menu - Matchbox now serves sushi! Service was sufficient but a little absentminded, particularly for drinks. Some people never got their water (I think she forgot) and drinks were never refilled - cups were empty. We were checked on a couple of times, but drink service was often overlooked. Food trickled out for our group. It came in about three waves. It was a reasonable wait (nothing offensively long), but it's always nice when the food comes out at the same time, or when some verbal acknowledgement is given to say that everyone's food would be out shortly. I would say food and service were average overall.

Happy Hour Specials

The atmosphere at Matchbox is very causal and great for families who want fantastic food or for wanting to grab some drinks and appetizers with friends. Ordered the BBQ Jerk pizza. I ate the whole pie and it was seasoned well and had a kick to the pizza. I also ordered a Cesar Side salad and for being just a salad the croutons were made daily from bread. The lettuce was very fresh and moth withered at all and was the perfect amount of Cesar dressing. I also ordered the watermelon patio pounder. It was a light cocktail but after a few you may feel it. Food and service was excellent. Happy Hour specials are worth giving a try. Ended with an old fashion that is served with little smoke from a small torch that adds a heavy smoky flavor which I have never seen at table side.

Coming from Michigan, this place was absolutely amazing, great food, real good quality food and even better service the manager Diego was great, made sure everything was smooth and that we were taken care of the entire night, super kind and friendly, and strives towards making guest experience one to remember, i definitely will be back on the weekend for an all you can eat brunch! Thank you Diego!!

I've been a fan of Matchbox for many years. It has one of the best happy hour offerings in the DMV.

Matchbox is undefeated to me! I've had so many occasions here for their brunch because it's just worth it! This time I came in for their lunch special and met my cousin to catch up. Parking for me was pretty easy as I found street parking right in front of the restaurant, my cousin parked in the garage. This matchbox is pretty big and it was decorated really nice. We were seated immediately for lunch and our server assisted us with the lunch options. I chose the mushroom pizza and soup. And my cousin had apple pear and soup of the day. For the $14.99 price it was worth it we had pizza left to take home. Pizza * Margherita * Pepperoni & Hot Honey * Fig & Prosciutto * Truffle + Wild Mushroom * Chicken Pesto Salad * Simple Salad * Caesar Salad * Apple Pear Salad Soup * Cream of Crab Soup * Soup of the Day

Service is fantastic! Ambiance is a sporty vibe, fun-filled, good for groups. Food is okay. For $34 All-You-Can-Eat Brunch and the opportunity to sample EVERYTHING, yes, you read that right, EVERYTHING, on the menu, within 2-hours, is a steal and downright criminal...but you won't be arrested, just FULL! For an additional $25, you can have All-You-Can-Eat Drinks. You can choose from Bloody Mary's, Strawberry Lemonade Margaritas, Peach Bellinis, Old Fashions, again, robbery. They keep the food and drinks coming. We sampled everything from the Pesto Chicken Pizza. Small sized vs personal. Fried Chicken Wings come with either Old Bay, Mambo Sauce or Buffalo. Can't go wrong with either. You get about 4 in the sample. Catfish is fried and seasoned to perfection. Comes with a side of bland and our initial serving was cold grits, as if they were pre-plated. The portion is about 2 full tablespoons, in a miniature 2.5 oz. stainless steel sauce round. Steak and eggs with potatoes is a slivered serving of steak, cooked to your doneness but unseasonably and tough. Eggs scrambled with Cheddar. Potatoes were small round home fries. 3, 6, 9 Burgers are Beef Sliders topped with a mound of shoestring Onion Rings. You can choose between a leg or breast for their Chicken & Waffle. The Waffle's, two (2) pieces of one (1) half (2 quarter pieces.) There's SO MUCH to choose from. We didn't even get to the Pancakes and French Toast offerings. Again, you have two (2) hours to Eat ALL You Can. In, the words of my Beloved grandmother, "Don't let your eyes become bigger than your stomach." Good for groups and those who are budget-conscious, who want to maximize their entire experience.

I had an amazing time at matchbox! I came by myself for the $37 unlimited brunch and by the time I got there they did run out of the fig pizza & cinnamon rolls but still everything that I got was delicious!! I'm still dreaming about Cinnamon Toast Crunch French toast The dj was playing great music and it was the perfect crowd & volume! I sat at the bar and the service was good and fast for as many people that were in there and I can't wait to go back and try what I didn't get to!

While in DC, we decided to come here for brunch to take advantage of their AYCE brunch. We had reservations somewhere else but when we saw this location was close and remembered how much fun we had at the Silver Spring location, it was a no-brainer to definitely go here for brunch instead. It was pretty empty when we arrived and were seated almost immediately. The seats were dirty with crumbs and food so I waited for our server/hostess to come back so I could inform them but she took a minute so I found an employee who graciously came and cleaned the seat off. I sat down and almost started dancing in my seat from the anticipation and remembering how good the food was at the Silver Spring location. I also wanted to order one of everything LOL When our server finally came back we quickly learned that if you're doing unlimited both parties have to order it at the bar table and since my friend only wanted something small to eat, that wasn't going to work for us. Now, I was faced with the decision of trying to decide on one item only! Do you know how hard it is for me to decide before going to a restaurant, as I'm looking at their menu, on what I would like to eat? I just asked our server to put in my friend's order and come back for mine. As we sat there, we wondered if we should have sat at the bar instead so I could have ordered my unlimited and they could have only ordered what they wanted. It was interesting because we asked the server this and they replied the same rule would apply for the bar, which didn't make sense because if I'm sitting at the bar I'm responsible for my own bill. But ok . . . . I decided to go with the shrimp and grits and asked for the sauce on the side after I confirmed the sausage didn't contain pork. The grits came out fresh and seasoned with unoverbaring cheese. The shrimp are an afterthought though since they didn't have any seasoning at all. They are highly depending upon that cajun sauce to season the shrimp when it should be simmered in it or at least he's in with those same spices that the sauce contains. My stomach started turning on first bite which made me happy I didn't go with the unlimited because I don't know if I would have been able to eat more. It was a good playlist on and that was about it. Definitely only going to the Silver Spring location hence forward.

Strawberry and Goat Cheese Salad

Food tastes good. Portion size was good for the burger and fries but the salad wasn't that substantial and a little small for an "entree" priced dish. Service started a little rough. Waiters were arguing amongst each other while a few tables waited to be seated. It took a while to get going but eventually they resolved their situation and service improved. The place is pretty large but not good for large groups. We were seated at table in the center of the restaurant and directly in front of the entrance. We made the best of it but probably should have just split ourselves into 2 booths.

This place was ok. Food was decent but service is dreadfully slow. Had an early dinner before long drive home and restaurant was dead so there was no reason for the slowest table service I've ever received in my life. Go elsewhere if you can.

    History

    Established in 2004.

Long before we struck our first match, lit our brick oven and welcomed our first guest, stood a vision for a high energy restaurant with delicious food and drinks that would come to be known for bringing people together. In 2002 we found an old vacant building in the heart of Washington DC and outlined a set of core beliefs that would be the first step in bringing our vision to life. We're known for wood-fired pizzas, mini burgers, fresh salads and chef-inspired entrées, like pan-seared sea bass and oven-roasted filet mignon. It's American bistro fare, crafted from high quality ingredients with a chef at the helm in every kitchen.

We were staying at a nearby hotel and didn't want to go far, and lucky for us, Grazie Nonna was nestled in the base of an adjacent space, so we popped over on a Wednesday evening for dinner. We made reservations, which is recommended, as they were busy! The space features a gorgeous outdoor bar and courtyard with all the modern and bright finishes, while the inside is a call back to old school Italia with the old school charm from the art to photos, ornate fixtures and of course the large burning candle anchoring each table. Either area is an absolute vibe, different from each other, but still connected! It was a table of four, so naturally we started with a bit of antipasto, a bread service, meatballs and some cocktails. The Nonna Ciao cocktail was absolutely divine, beyond perfection! This theme remained strong in everything we experienced from the bread, meatballs, pasta and of course the pizza! Speaking of, they recently added the Pittsburgh Bianco pie to the menu, so naturally we had to go with it and it was the right call! The pizza was phenomenal, pillowy, but crispy crust, just the right amount of sauce, excellent sauce and the perfect mix and amount of cheese! Service was stellar from entry to exit. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, gracious and just fun to engage with. Overall, absolutely adore Grazie Nonna!

When we first walked in, the cashier immediately apologized for the long wait times, thanked everyone for their patience, and let us know they were incredibly short staffed with only two people working. Because the tiny interior was already packed, we decided to leave and do some sightseeing first. However, seeing how good the pizza looked we knew we had to come back later that afternoon. There's no negative details in my review. Nothing but positive things and a small recommendation. 1. Staff and Service I really appreciated the cashier's honesty about running behind right off the bat. That allowed us to make an informed choice rather than get frustrated by a long wait. More businesses could learn from this! 2. Restaurant's Layout The inside is a bit tight and busy, but it's located in a smaller older building, so they have no other options. Since they can't expand the inside adding an outdoor pub height counter for eating, a bench or some seating out front would be a great way to give waiting patrons a place to sit. Also a place to eat. 3. The Pizza -The Veggie Pizza: My nephew and I both ordered this, and the slices were massive you'll see in my pics! They were honestly the largest slices I have ever seen! I love pizza and have eaten it in New York and Chicago, and my slice here held its own. It was loaded with a huge variety of vegetables. I requested to put mine through the oven twice to get the veggies warm and cooked because I noticed my nephew's slice looked like a warm salad on crust. So happy I did because it was delicious! The jalapeños were intensely spicy which is on me, since I'm a bit of a lightweight with spice! -The Meat Options: My son got the pepperoni and thought it was really good, and my husband got a supreme slice which he also said was good . 4. Price and pizza size- they're more expensive than a typical slice, but once you see those big ole slices in my pics you'll understand why. They can't even fit on a plate. They had to serve them to you in an actual pizza box! After reading my long review you're trying to find out if I would go back huh? Absolutely! If I ever in the area or stay at the Hilton DC again, I would definitely walk right on over and get a slice. You can feed a family of three on one slice! Adult and two small children!

Basic things you'd expect like extra napkins, a serving spatula for the pizza, and cheese/pepper flakes to be brought before or with the pizza weren't done. The pizza took 35 minutes to come out and certainly wasn't worth the wait. The pizza was plain, unflavorful, floppy as heck, and had a soup-like liquidy consistency, immediately falling apart. The crust was chewy and unappealing. The pizza wasn't worth $33. Gimme a break. The manager walked by 40 times and didn't stop by once to check on us but seemed to check on every other table. We arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday without a reservation. After reading several reviews beforehand, I saw multiple people mention that reservations really were not necessary because brunch is usually not very busy. They were absolutely right. There was only one other party in the restaurant when we walked in, and they were leaving as we were being seated. If you are looking for a last minute brunch spot, this is definitely one where you can probably walk right in. The restaurant itself has a clean, modern atmosphere with plenty of natural light. It is quiet and relaxed, making it a nice place if you want a slower paced brunch without the usual DC crowds. The dining room is comfortable, although it could have used a little more energy. Evelyn was our server, and she was very pleasant throughout our meal. She was kind and professional, but it felt like her attention was somewhere else. Considering we were the only table in the restaurant, I expected a bit more attentiveness. I am not sure what she was juggling behind the scenes, but service felt slower than it should have been with such a light crowd. We started with the cinnamon roll, and unfortunately, it was the biggest disappointment of the meal. It was hard, dry, and honestly tasted like it came straight from the grocery store. I have absolutely no issue with a store bought pastry, but at the very least, warm it up. Serving it cold and stale was a strange choice and made a poor first impression. For our entrees, Willie ordered the egg and cheese sandwich, which was simple and satisfying. I went with the Greek yogurt bowl and added a side of crispy turkey bacon. Let me tell you, that turkey bacon was AMAZING. It was perfectly crisp without being overcooked and ended up being my favorite thing on the table. We also customized the lemon blueberry pancakes so they would be something both of us could enjoy, and that turned out to be a good decision. They were light, fluffy, and had a pleasant lemon flavor without being overly sweet. I paired everything with a pineapple juice, which was refreshing and complemented brunch nicely. Overall, the food was a mixed bag. There were a few bright spots, especially the turkey bacon and pancakes, but nothing that really made me eager to rush back. The cinnamon roll was a complete miss, and the service, while friendly, lacked the attentiveness I expected given how empty the restaurant was. Art and Soul feels like one of those places that works if you are staying at the YOTEL or simply need a convenient brunch without a wait. It is comfortable, easy to get into, and has a few menu items worth ordering. However, in a city like Washington, DC that has so many outstanding brunch options, I do not see this becoming a regular stop for me. Overall rating: 6.9/10. I would come back if I did not have anywhere else in mind, but it would not be my first brunch recommendation.

The different menus are solid. They provide different options than the diner downstairs. The seating is spacious, inside and outside. The patio offers great views and there are overhead heaters and seat heaters during the colder months. My most recent visit was for brunch ahead of a game at Audi Field. My group sat outside on the patio. It wasn't busy, but we did wait awhile before we received service. I had to ask the hostess to send someone to our table. We did bottomless drinks which included unlimited Mimosas, Bellinis, Bloody Marys and select cocktails. I appreciated the different juice options beyond the classic orange juice. All of the drinks were good. For food I had the super lump crab cake omelet and my friends had the five napkin fried chicken sandwich, the shrimp & grits, and hanger steak and eggs. The omelet was good, filled with a decent around of crab. My friends enjoy the chicken sandwich and the steak and eggs. The shrimp & grits were a miss. My friend said there was a lot going on but the dish lacked flavor. Overall, it's an okay option for brunch if you're looking for something a bit more than what the downstairs diner has to offer. Solid choice before heading to a nearby event. I'll likely continue to stop by for late night happy hour.
