Complimentary Snacks with the lager
Ting W.

What a great lunch spot! Can't beat a classic ramen with sliced pork and a great soft boiled egg! Also if you want refill of noodles they gotchuuu! It's really cheap for a refill on noodles. If you're getting a lager-it's served with complimentary snacks. The broth is super creamy and served with green seaweed. Not your seaweed salad, but a great addition to to the soup.

Shio ramen
Kristie W.

Their Shio ramen is great if you like sesame flavour. The soup base is heavily sesame flavoured to a point where you don't really taste the chicken flavour of the broth. The soup is rich and the noodles make a perfect vehicle to soak of this rich broth. There are 2 small slices of meat. Only one of them is chashu (pork); the other slice is chicken. The original tsukemen is mediocre. The dipping broth is also heavily sesame based, very similar to their regular ramen, just more concentrated. The noodles are too thick for the dipping broth. I personally enjoy the ramen at Maruhachi in Burnaby much more.

Tsuke men!

As a foodie, I was exploring the Main Street for good places to eat. I dropped off the bus at the 41th Avenue and walked along the street up to Mount Presant. On the way back I spotted this restaurant had Tsuke Ramen! I found there aren't many Japanese noodle bar has Tsuke Ramen. As a Tsuke ramen lover I gave it a try. Compared to the tsuke ramen I had in Japan and Hong Kong, the flavour of thick soup for dipping the noodle is mostly sesame and it dominates the overall taste of the dashi. I couldn't taste the chicken and pork in the soup. The soup didn't have strong taste. I think there are rooms to improve. Perhaps the chef has been trying to create his/her own flavour other than the traditional flavour. The goodness of the tsuke ramen was the bowl of noodle and ingredients were heated and remain warm. Though I usually order the tsuke ramen to be served in cold, it was good as served in warm. For the ramen my companion ordered, it tasted normal, at least better those in foodcourt. But it wasn't impressive for the price it costs. In a nutshell this place is still a good place to go if you haven't tried any Tsuke Ramen. The restaurant is doing very well for social distancing. Tables are separated in quite a distance. Servers are nice and polite that adds credit to the rating.

Kiwami ramen

Give me all the noods! It was pouring rain and we were craving some warmth and comfort. We popped into Marutama on Main and were seated quickly. The servers were all so kind and made sure we had everything we wanted. We started with hot tea and then ordered four bowls of ramen (one veggie curry ramen, and three Kiwami), chicken karage and gyoza. The bowls of soup came out so fast and we're piping hot! The broth was delicious on the spicy Kiwami which I loved. The noodles perfectly chewy as well and I love a good jammy egg. I also tried the curry veg ramen and the broth was to die for. Definitely if I wanna switch it up, I'd try this one next time but I do love my more classic ramen. The chicken karage was tasty but overall I've had better at other places. Their batter was a touch more like a grainy panko. Still tasty tho! The gyoza were great and I could have eaten another order to myself. I will be back for sure especially during the Fall and Winter! I think overall Ramen Danbo is still my fave in all of Van tho!

The flavour of the broth was very rich but the texture of the noodles wasn't my favourite. Would love to come back and try another dish

Shoyu ramen

I love the regular Marutama locations so I was curious about what the more fusion and experimental version of the restaurant chain has to offer. Still ramen, but their offering is a bit different than the other locations. I got the shoyu ramen, which has chashu, egg, seafood, scallions, green onion, and kale. The chashu is thick, tender, and had a nice grill on it. The scallions gave a nice kick. I did not like the kale - a bit too chewy compared to the other softer ingredients. The egg was a bit overcooked and not as flavourful as the Marutama regular egg. The broth was flavourful, but I prefer the Marutama chicken broth instead. I also tried their MFC: Marutama Fried Chicken. I thought this was too oily and on the saltier side, though tender and flavourful. Interesting ramen, but at the end of the day I still prefer the regular Marutama.

The Marutama empire continues to grow, this time with a new concept: Marutama Gaiden. Their two other locations (Denman and Robson) are still my favourite ramen in the city. Gaiden means spin off/side story in Japanese; here, they do more adventurous, unique bowls. It's close to Forty Ninth Parallel Coffee Roasters. I've been twice; first time, on a Tuesday evening and most recently on a Saturday afternoon. The inside has a bit of an odd layout but there's half a dozen seats for solo diners that looks out onto Main Street. Put your name down on the list if there's a line. Both times I was seated right away. The menu is small; 6 ramen options, mega karaage chicken, daily tapas and a few specials. Note: they don't accept cash payments, only cards. Trip #1 - Shoyu ramen ($10.75) - bonto flavour infused in chicken broth with pork belly chashu, seaweed, green and red onion. I added a soft boiled egg ($1.50). The egg is properly cooked but isn't marinated. This is also the first time I've had red onion in my ramen bowl. The toppings seem a bit...lacking. The red onion didn't add much flavour. That being said, the noodles had an excellent chewy, toothsome bite and the chashu was well seasoned and tender. The broth was different; it didn't taste as rich or creamy as the original. Trip #2 - Cold ramen ($12.50) - cold double soup (chicken, bonito and mackerel) with smokey bonito infused soy sauce, chicken breast char-shu, poached egg, marinated cucumbers and okra. The dollop of wasabi was an interesting side. Can't say I'm a big fan of cold noodles but the broth grew on me. Poached egg was perfect. Noodles had the usual fantastic texture. Chicken reminded us of being cooked sous vide style. - AKA-maru ($14.50) - chili & nut flavour with shrimp and ground chicken. It came topped with saffron, red onion, cilantro, green onion and a lemon wedge. The two shrimps were so good! Wish they gave you more. Broth was fantastic; creamy, slightly spicy and addictive. You can taste/smell all the shrimp that's been cooked in there. Cool to see Marutama branching out and offering something different to the ramen game. The aka-maru is legit! 3.5 stars.

Noodles, check. Broth, check. Basic toppings, check. A solid menu of authentic ramen. Dislikes: You can't have a seat until everyone in your party shows up. So we had to wait at the entrance for 20 minutes because one person was running late. Would have preferred to sit and snack on appetizers, but no. Stand and wait, even though almost every table was available. Maybe standing was a good thing, because the chairs were uncomfortablely hard anyways.

Shiyo(salt-based) ramen
Winnie C.

Marutama has several locations in the city of Vancouver. I read the reviews for the West End location and decided to give it a try at their Mount Pleasant location given the line was shorter. Their ramen came with for different flavors - shiyo (salt-based), shoyu, miso and spicy. We ordered soup which is basically tonkatsu. The broth was milky but lacked depth of flavors. I wish it was hotter. The cha shu was tender and the half egg was done right. Noodles were chewy enough. The ramen also came with fried onions, red chilli powder and white sesame on the side. The karaage was crispy but fatty, also lacked flavors - wouldn't order that again.

Shoyu ramen with egg
Jessie W.

Came on a Sunday around 1pm, party of 3. We didn't have to wait at all, but when we finished around 2pm there were at least 3 groups waiting. Menu is nice and simple. I got the classic shoyu -- thought the broth was a bit salty and watery but loved the chewy noodles. Also had egg added to mine, which was also on the saltier side. No complaints about price and service. Overall not a bad ramen pick outside of downtown Vancouver.

Tamago ramen

Great simple ramen. The pork is super savoury and the broth too. Fast and great service. Clean place and fear prices.

Wilson L.

Marutama always brings it with consistent, and delicious ramen. Definitely recommend checking this spot out for ramen and gyoza. This location offers different broths than the other Marutama locations which is pretty cool.

Sam L.

An offshoot location of the classic downtown Vancouver restaurant highly regarded for their creamy broth still offers some of that magic but is ultimately locking in menu selection and... personality? I'm not sure what it is. The trick might be to come in without the expectations of the original location. What We Got: classic shoyu What We Liked: broth is still good! What We Didn't: the lack of the OG amazingness on the menu. I was ready to struggle between getting the CHA-SHU TAMAGO RAMEN ZENBU RAMEN Or even the AOSA RAMEN orrrr even the Original. And who knows, maybe 2 or even all 3. Because my first experience with Marutama in 2015 was THAT special. But shoyu is all they had for me and as outstanding as the broth is, it wasn't what I wanted. I do feel the broth had less kick, but that might have just been me swallowing my disappointment. I think it might do a lot better without the Marutama name. On the upside, no long line up, no wait, service was still decent if unspectacular, and it's very clean and orderly as most Ramen places are. Might not be back here, but it was worth a shot.

Stopped by Maruhachi on a Saturday lunchtime after our long commute from Seattle. this restaurant…read moreis tucked in a corner not too far from the main Robson street. Paid parking was not too hard to find on the Main Street but during busy dining hours it might be difficult. We got seated right away at the bar since there were no tables open and the service was quick. Traditional Japanese style ambiance and even the bathroom had rounded Japanese bowl sink. As someone who doesn't have chicken broth (paitan style) ramen, I was really looking forward to the original ramen I ordered but I was a bit disappointed in the flavor profile of the dish. The ramen had both chasu and seaweed paired with thin round noodles. The broth was creamy and had a hint of chicken flavor but even adding several rounds of their soy sauce/salt seasoning they have on the side to adjust your broth to your liking-- I found that the richness of the soup was not what I had expected from the reviews that I read prior to coming here. Overall, a bit disappointed in the flavoring of the broth but maybe we came on an off day. I would be willing to give it a shot again in the future if I had ramen cravings and given that it was very affordable ($11-15 per bowl with tip), but I would probably opt to try another place first.

Review #3 for 2026 I…read morereally wanted to like this place. I watched many videos and read reviews before coming here, but it just did not hit the spot. After a cold day of exploring Stanley Park, we felt that ramen would really hit the spot, so we went here not wanting to deal with a wait at Danbo with a hungry and tired toddler. There was NO wait when we arrived here and we were seated immediately... which for a place that was really hyped up, should had made us think twice. There was only 1 other party at the restaurant. Now, the workers were super nice and the food came out quickly and we did eat everything because we were starving. We all ordered the cha-shu tamago ramen, 2 of us got spicy and 2 of us non-spicy. It came with extra chashu and the soft boiled egg for about $20 Canadian. The bowl was a good size and there was a promo for free extra noodles while we were there. Everyone except me in our group took advantage of it because I was too full from my bowl. Now, the broth here is different from other places because it is chicken based and not pork based. Everything I had seen about this place promised the broth is every bit just as good as the pork bone broth... however, the broth we received looked flavorful, but was bland. It was completely bland. There was no richness to it, not even a hint. I don't know, coming from southern California, the flavor just was not there period. We did all eat our food because we were starving, but it for sure did not hit the spot at all. Maybe we got an off day? Otherwise our broth had literally zero flavor to it. We all wished we had tried the other ramen place instead right after trying our ramen. Would I come back? I will have to say definitely no. We do not live in Vancouver and I do not want to waste any meals on a place that did not taste good the first time we went.

If you're curious about the rest of their ramen lineup, the ramen flight is a fun way to try them out without committing to just one. Service has been attentive on my visits, and food comes out quickly, which is always appreciated. Last night, I tried their Dine Out Vancouver menu and thought it was excellent value. For $35, it included a Sapporo beer, five pieces of takoyaki, a bowl of Tonkotsu ramen, and mochi ice cream. It also happened to be Sake Friday, so we picked up a bottle at 50% off - hard to complain about that math. The ambience was generally fine, but the staff were doing a photoshoot for their new menu right beside our table. The lighting was extremely bright and the space felt cramped, and since the shoot lasted the entire duration of our meal, it became a bit distracting. The staff was very pleasant and helpful with menu suggestions. I ordered a vegan rice bowl, and my friend and I shared an order of the vegetable gyoza and an aburi cheesecake. The gyoza and rice bowl were great! The gyoza, which we ordered on the recommendation of our waiter when we told them we were looking for a vegetarian appetizer, were made with soy-based imitation meat that had a very meaty texture - simple but very tasty. The rice bowl also had the soy meat, but seasoned differently, with a more intense flavour, along with atsuage tofu and various vegetables. It was delicious and also seemed healthy. We liked the aburi cheesecake, but it was more lemony than we expected. The waiters who brought it out said the lemon was to cut the sweetness, but we actually felt like the lemon competed with the caramel flavour of the bruleed crust. The textures were amazing though. We really enjoyed our meal here and I wish I'd tried them sooner!

Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.
