I went to this place after seeing the mostly positive Yelp reviews. I went with 2 other people and we were all very pleased with our meals. I had a grilled chicken omelet that was one of the daily specials. It had chicken, spinach, onion, bell peppers and mushrooms.. It was soooo yummy. And I loved the special potatoes that came with with it. I would definitely return to this establishment. I went on a Saturday around 11 a.m. and while there were people waiting I did not have to wait a long time to be seated.. Got here at 7:30AM on Saturday and there was a line already! Make sure to put your name down on the paper even before they open. Ordered their San Pasqual omelette and the all-famous french toast. The omelette is just a typical omelette. Egg's not overcooked. Good amount of bacon in it. I would prefer swiss cheese instead of cheddar though. It comes with toast (choice of white, wheat, rye, sourdough, and english muffin) and breakfast potatoes. The french toast is made with sourdough... so the sour taste is not expired bread of anything. Although different... I don't think the sourdough worked well for a dish that's meant to be sweet. It's covered with corn flakes and that gives it an interesting, crunchy texture. $2 more for a side of fruits to go with it. Over all, it's worth a try, it was good, but definitely over-hyped. Marton's is a nice small restaurant that doesn't act so small. It looked more like a house than a restaurant but the crowd of people waiting outside didn't make it hard to find. I went there for a late breakfast at around 10:30 with a party of 6. We waited for about 20 mins, which I consider fast considering the number of people and the size of the restaurant (at max capacity probably 40 people). To the food, we ordered the Denver. San Pasqual, and California omelette. tuna wraps and french toast. We all had a try of each others dishes and, of all the omelettes, I like the San Pasqual omelette- there was good flavor and it was fulfilling. The same goes with the Denver but it was more fulfilling than flavorful (it's what one would normally expect from a Denver omelette- chunky ham, veggies, and cheese). The Cali one was plain and the sausage used lacked that salty flavor from regular sausages. But for all three, there was a good amount of cheese, which is key start to a good omelette. The tuna wrap was a pleasant combo and the sweet potato fries with it was alright- not enough crisp to it. The french toast is definitely better than average but I thought that the added toppings to it was a bit much to something that already had good crisp. The total cost of it was around $100 for 7 items and no drinks. It is not overly pricey for breakfast but pricey none the less. The quality and portion of their food is there but not for the cost. Overall, a pricey place for a good breakfast. The cost doesn't affect the number of stars it is rewarded since that's for the food. So a 4 for food quality. read more

i first tried Marston's this past Sunday for breakfast i ordered the California Omelet, which is topped with avocado and sour cream. Which restaurant gives u avocado and sour cream for free?? Those things are always extra! That was a big plus for me! Their portions are really big so if you are not a breakfast person, (like me) its good to share. They serve most of their breakfast plates with potatoes and side of bread. Good thing, my sister and i shared she ordered their famous french toast so we split the omelet and french toast. and i have to say they were both great, i loved it! they were constantly bringing us coffee and they have excellent customer service. We will def stop by again! The only down of it, is you have to get their early because they do not take reservations and usually their waits range from 40+ minutes plus and have a tiny parking spot... other than that it was great! read more

When I worked in Pasadena, this was a favorite place to go for lunch. Albeit small, the food is good and the staff works had to keep the place moving. I know it's contradicting my rating but I say it is a gem because there aren't a lot of places for breakfast and brunch in Pasadena that feels "cottagey". It is just a very cute place to go to. It kinda reminded of a popular breakfast place in La Jolla called the cottage so maybe that is why I think this place is a gem. So the food is good but I've had better breakfast foods in the Los Angeles area. I usually get the omelettes, which never fail to satisfy me. The French toast is pretty good. It's rolled in corn flakes, so it adds a crunchy bite, which is nice. Hubby got the classic eggs Benedict. Nothing notable and the potatoes that came with it were soggy and a bit over salted. Nothing stellar enough to pay over $10 for. Which is a bit overpriced for what you get. All in all, we probably won't be coming back unless I have a mad craving for their French toast. We will probably just stick to our regular place: Russell's on Fair Oaks in Old Town. read more

Amazing brunch place that offers a really homey atmosphere that you usually get from homemade food. Marston's looks like an old house that was converted into a restaurant so the place is really small and the parking spots are limited to only 5-7 guests, however, there is plenty of side street parking available around the area. Their breakfast menu is really simple with omelettes, waffles, and pancakes for breakfast while the lunch menu offers specialty sandwiches and salads. The omelettes were deliciously fluffy, topped with a generous helping of avocado slices, and a lightly buttered toast on the side. I had the B&B sandwich which was tri-tip grilled on sourdough bread and was delighted at how flavorful the meat was especially when lathered with the blue cheese dressing. Not to mention the sweet jicama salad on the side that cancels out the greasiness of the sandwich and of course the sweet potato fries which deserve a special mention. A bit pricey at around $15 person but the food is truly unforgettable. I will be back very soon. Also, I'm gonna buy that cow painting on the wall someday cuz that thing is beautiful. read more

Came here for brunch with my girlfriends on Monday. No wait to sit inside, but we decided to wait about 15 minutes for a few tables to open up outside. However, right at 11am they stopped serving breakfast and closed the kitchen for a half hour to transitions into lunch. 2 girls from our party were running late so we ordered a few items before the kitchen closed. We ordered the french toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit bowl. The french toast was good, but nothing to go out of your way for. The oatmeal and fresh fruit bowl was your typical fare. Service was attentive and friendly. When everyone finally arrived we sat around and drank coffee for a bit, but decided to head elsewhere instead for lunch. I could see why people would like this place. It is a small and quaint restaurant (looks like a house) with a friendly staff, free parking either in their small lot or metered street parking (but free until 11am), and the option for either indoor or outdoor seating. Overall, the food was only A-OK and not something I would wait in line for, but a good place to catch up with friends. If I'm in the area I may give it another try. read more

The pulled pork Benedict was a mess. The eggs were done correctly but the bagel, at least I think it was one, was drenched in some type of sog. The potatoes were horribly seasoned and left a bad taste in my mouth. Then I ordered the blueberry pancakes. They looked like they tasted. The color was uneven on the flap jack and they had absolutely no fluff to them whatsoever. I just ate 2/3's of them and cut my losses. My waitress was very sweet though as she did ask how my food WS then stepped right up and asked if I wanted something else. The manger did apologize for the pulled pork benedict at the end of he meal and just put the check on the counter without acknowledging me with a thank you or any indication that the check was for me except by placing the check folder at the edge of the counter. So after reading numerous reviews about the cornflake french toast, I decided that this is what I NEEDED to try. I agree that the cornflakes did add an interesting texture that you usually don't get with french toast. But it was definitely not four slices good. After the first or second slice it started getting pretty dry. I'd suggest getting the cornflake french toast as a side. We arrived around 9 and had about a 30 minute wait. Great little place for breakfast in Pasadena. I have heard the wait can be horrendous but on Sunday at 11:15am it was only 15 minutes for a party of 5. Not too bad. Shorter wait for smaller parties. They are known for their crunchy French toast but I think their pancakes are better. They have buttermilk pancakes, blueberry pancakes, and whole grain. You can add berries, bananas, and nuts on top. Really fluffy and tasty. The omelets were great. Lots of different omelets and eggs benedicts. The price is the only downfall. About $20pp for French toast and pancakes is a little steep. read more

Get there early. Do not go here if you are in a hurry. Parking is challenging for sure. I had complete strangers waving me into a parking spot. Thank you complete strangers. Food was well worth the wait. The food comes out fast once you order it. It just takes awhile to get seated, but no one seems to care. We had breakfast and everything our group had, we enjoyed. IF you can stomach the wait... this is a great place to go for breakfast/lunch in Pasadena. Unless you get someone to write your name on the clipboard while you're on your way there... you might be up for a decent wait (this is not a large restaurant... probably 24 tables total in the restarant) I'm always torn but usually have the corn flake crusted french toast. The problem is that they don't make a half-sized order. As a full order it is simply too filling. Also, there are no combination sorts of breakfasts and everything is about $8-$10 and I'd hate to waste food by over-ordering. If you have time for a leisurely breakfast and you're not in too big a group (try to keep it four and under) this is the place! Also, what is nice, that I've noticed, is when you substitute fresh fruit for say... potatoes - - they don't scrimp by giving you what would effectively be garnish. You actually GET fruit! The lot is small... so be prepared to get street parking... but this is far from a deal-breaker! Marston's is my have-to place any time I visit Pasadena. Also, I've eaten here with friends' kids before, and I have to say service has always been good and they take extra special care to make sure the kids needs are looked after. Hahaha... II had dinner her Saturday 5/16/09 with my family. This was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Service was good. Our waiter was attentive and not pushy. Prices were what to be expected and well worth the money. The Jambalaya Risotto was outstanding. Spicy and loaded with shrimp and sausage. The best I have ever had. The gentleman at the table next to me said the same thing. The scallops were outstanding. My wife nearly drank the lemon butter sauce that the scallops were bathed in. The roasted chicken was perfect. My 8 year old was able to order chicken tenders off the menu which were also very good. Deserts were just as good. In my quest for the perfect french toast, I've stumbled through countless SF restaurants, Coco's, Mimi's, The butler and the chef, Denny's, and god knows what else. That quest ends, quite fittingly, near my hometown. The lesson I've learned: never doubt how good food can get in LA. This place has the best french toast I've ever had. They basically roll the bread in corn flakes and then top it with fresh fruit. Without all that thick syrup mixed in, so you get a really clean bite. Adorable and you can sit outside! I however, DID NOT LIKE the french toast with corn flakes. My corn flakes were slightly crips and it gave it a burnt taste throughout every bite. Went for breakfast on a Saturday and waited less than 2 minutes after a 10am arrival. Chose to sit at the counter and enjoyed watching the parade of plates pass by - all of them looking yummy. We had the Cornflake French Toast and agree with others that it's a winner. Yes, one of the pieces was a little crusty on the bottom but the contrast of texture was really interesting and the thick slices of sourdough were perfect inside. Also had a good Veggie Omelet. The proper balance of egg, cheese & veggies and unlike some others I've had, it wasn't watery from the veg-juices. Sourdough toast was good and they provide Smucker's jam/jelly, not some off brand. We thought the country potatoes were awesome and would order them as a side, next time we go. The hostess and waitresses were all very friendly and professional and it's obvious that they really take pride in their service - not in "just doing their jobs" or "getting a decent tip". Cozy bungalow, semi-pretentious 50+ year old crowd, with "Sour Times" by Portishead playing in the background. I kid you not. I'm thinking...OK someone has great taste in music, but this place seems a little iffy in terms of the crowd. I've heard the great things about breakfast, and ALWAYS see this place crowded in morning. I can understand why it's not that popular for dinner; they even gave us a 20% off coupon for dinner next time. Perhaps trying to vary the demographic to a younger crowd, which is smart. What I like about Marston's is the re-use of the architecture with its central entry and the configuration of the seating arrangement upon entering: its inherent cottage-coziness is retained. In this part of west Pasadena populated with a number of multi-storied structures from many decades, the front porch of Marston's beckons. Also, the front porch is visually supportive to customers while waiting patiently for the name call---it's better than simply standing on the sidewalk. During the breakfast rush when the place is packed, I like taking my chances of being able to score a single seat at the small counter to the rear of the cottage. Counter sitting means being served immediately. If I can't be seated immediately, I don't bother with the effort of placing my name on the list. Once at the counter, I have found that an order of oatmeal and a side of a toasted English muffin suffices---that's considered a straightforward order for the kitchen staff. Also, with sitting at the counter, the waitress walks a few feet, to give the reader a feel for the scale of Marston's. Overall, the breakfast menu is too caloric for my physical needs, yet I am very pleased that this business exists. Every town could use a Marston's. read more

This restaurant is a cute little place in an old house. My fiance and I go to brunch here from time to time and I've taken a girlfriend. One thing to note is the long wait! It's best to get here early so you don't have to wait so long for a table. The second thing to note is the lack of parking. They have a tiny parking lot so you may have to drive around to find street parking or you can park in the garage down Raymond for a few bucks. As an Eggs Benedict aficionado, I can't recommend theirs. The flavor didn't do it for me. The Pulled Pork Benedict is a little better. I've had their omelettes, scrambled eggs, sausages, and French toast here and would recommend these over the Benedict. The food really isn't to die for or anything but it's pretty good and it's worth the ambiance. I came for the pulled pork benedict but decided to be spontaneous and go with the florentine egg benedicts instead. They were okay, but nothing stood out. Could have used a little more seasoning or brought out the flavors a little more. I'll admit to being a bit harsh because the eggs weren't poached to my liking. I'm all about the perfect yolk, and these yolks were...perfectly cooked through. The only way these things would have run was if they'd sprouted legs and run off the plate that way. What an absolute disappointment. Friend enjoyed her french toast though! The ambiance indoors left a lot to be desired as well. It's cozy and quaint, which I don't mind, but the lighting was horrible and added to the claustrophobic feel (over packed space, closed doors, loud conversations all around). This place is soooo cute! It's like being in a cottage with a porch in the South. They have a parking lot but it's really small so it fills up quickly. Plenty of street parking. I had the salmon wrap and it was pretty good. It came with this cucumber yogurt sauce on the side that was yummy but not with the sandwich. I actually took it home because I used to know someone that made this and ate it with chips and it's perfect for that! The fruit on the side was decent. Everything tastes fresh.
