I like coming here for breakfast. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. I'm a fan of the eggs benedict and whole grain pancakes (not together, though!). The service is pretty good though it's sometimes pretty slow. If you go on a weekend, bring a magazine because it's likely you're going to be waiting at least half an hour. Several errands and an hour later, there we were, enjoying the california omelette and an orange salad w/a passion fruit tea. I'd say the california omelette was good but what I greatly enjoyed was the orange salad. I went to Marston's based on the good reviews on Yelp, but felt generally disappointed. First, the prices are higher than the average breakfast joint; for example, omelettes range from $10 to $12.50, although they do come with potatoes and toast. The food was good, but I didn't find myself savoring it bite-by-bite the way you would when your food is bursting with flavor. I was also a little bothered by the long wait, although that's to be expected at breakfast places on the weekends. I wanted to sit on the porch, which felt warm and full of sunlight, but the wait would have been even longer. When we finally were seated, we were placed directly below an air vent that blasted cold air. We asked if we could move to another table, but they said they couldn't put us at a 4-top since we were only a couple. Moreover, I felt like we were bothering them when I specialized my omelet with no onions and egg-whites. This place is like the cleaner, larger, more expensive, and more boring version of Fox's in Altadena. I had high expectations as my friend brought me here with promises of a delicious breakfast. "It's soooooooo good, you'll love it, just wait, I can't believe you haven't been here." But then, we got there and they said they were only serving lunch (it was 11:30). "Oh," she said, "wanna go somewhere else?" Maybe it's just me, but I feel like they should either serve their breakfast all day if it's that good, or at least be good for lunch too. I had the open-faced turkey sandwich (without the cream cheese stuff, apple chutney, or sprouts, I know I'm picky) and it was pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary. To me, nothing is more annoying than having to pay too much for bland, underseasoned food, and my omelette was just that. They give you 4 pieces so you definitely want to share this with someone else who is going to order something else so you can get some variety and not get tired of the same taste in every bite. So we ended up also ordering the typical combo with eggs, bacon/sausage, potatoes and their famous fresh baked in house bread to go our with our french toast. First off, we enjoyed the 1/2 order of french toast. It is crunchy, savory syrup, with bananas. Omelets are huge and big enough to share for two people. I dinged them half a star for the 30 minute wait. And I ding them with half a star for having a stoic server. I ding them a full star for unethical server that doesn't disclose upcharges for add-ons. You should tell us that if I want fruit with my omelet it is going to be a $3 upcharge. If we want strawberries with our french toast, you should tell us it is $3 more. You need to give the consumer the choice to decide with full disclosure. Granted, she didn't charge us for coffee or iced tea, so it balanced out. I came here on a Sunday morning for a brunch. I arrived at around 10:40AM and the wait was about 20-30 minutes. The restaurant seemed pretty small from the outside. There was an outdoor seating area which were next to the sidewalk on the porch. We finally got seated at around 11AM and the waitress took our drink orders and gave us time to take a look at the menu. I decided to go for The Californian omelet because I love love love avocado and sour cream. It came in a pretty large portion with an equally large portion of diced potatoes on the side. It was a bit too much for breakfast, but then again I don't really for my first meal of the day. We also ordered their famous Fantastic French Toast, which, in my opinion, wasn't too fantastic. I guess I'm just not a fan of sourdough. And it was a little overpriced for just two slices of toast. Oh, and I had a bit of the smoked salmon omelet. It was.. ehhh. Well, it wasn't bad at least. I guess I would go back again to try out other items on the menu. The dinner menu looked pretty promising. After working up a good appetite from archery on a chilly Saturday morning,a few friends and I were looking forward to a good brunch/lunch @ Marston's. As we drove by the restaurant, the sight of the large crowd in front of the restaurant was rather discouraging. If there's a waiting crowd, naturally we'd be inclined to think that the the food must be really good, right? So, we decided to wait--normally we'd try to come up with a Plan B. Parking can be troublesome. The force must have been on our side that day, 'cause we got lucky and parked in a space right in front of the restaurant. After approximately waiting for about 20 minutes, we got a table inside for 5. The interior space was rather cramped and didn't have that pleasant breakfast aroma--no scent of freshly baked goods and/or invigorating brewed coffee. We had heard that the French toasts were pretty awesome. Our group ordered two orders of the French toasts with strawberries, two orders of the Californian omelette, and an order of the macadamia pancakes. All our food came quickly. The French toasts *looked* good, it's cereal-coated exterior crunchy, and the sliced red strawberries on top (with extra charge) added more appeal. However, it was essentially thicker white bread seared with crushed cereal flakes. And how much did it cost? $10.95!! Expensive ne! Not really worth it. It was NOT the kind of French toast that fills your mouth with a balance of sweetness, spices, fluffiness, moist milkiness/egginess. The pancakes were good, but nothing to go out of your way or stand in line for. The omelette was standard. We didn't try their lunch items, so can't comment on that. We randomly picked this place for brunch on a day when we randomly picked Pasadena as the city we were going to eat in. Despite reviews complaining about the wait, we were seated quickly. I was a little disappointed that the inside didn't live up to the promise of the exterior. The restaurant is located in a cute little house, but the inside was pretty much gutted into one large noisy room, with tables fairly close together and some rather random decor (my date was trying to decide if the pile of baskets way up high on a shelf was decoration or if they had a purpose). Our server was very friendly and the service was prompt. I ordered the pulled pork benedict and my date had a daily special (an omelet with spinach, asparagus, mushrooms and I can't remember what else). My eggs were perfectly poached; the whites were not rubbery, and the yolk was not overly runny. The hollandaise was excellent (I only wish there had been more of it). The pulled pork was tender but a little on the sweet side; I would have liked more of a kick to it. The english muffin, if it was toasted at all, was way too soft; as a result it did not stand up to the moisture in the pork and the eggs, and kind of turned to mush. The potatoes, however, were outstanding! The highlight of my meal! They were well seasoned and cooked with peppers and onions, with lots of little crispy burnt-ish bits (that's a good thing, trust me!). My date did not enjoy his meal quite as much. He said that there were too many competing flavors in the omelet, and with both spinach and asparagus in there, I totally get what he meant. Took my mamma here on a Friday at 10am to thank her for nursing me to health after Lasik. The place was packed; waiting list, line in front and all...I was surprised so many people didn't work on a Friday but I mean, it is Marstons and the food is pretty spectacular. Location however, its a bit hard to find parking... being in Pasadena and all. The restaurant also is a home converted into a restaurant, so space is limited... expect to wait if you show up on peak hours. Once inside, it can be a bit crowded as the restaurant is trying to put as much tables ans chairs as possible. This is a cozy place that prepares excellent breakfast and lunches and I am told dinners. I have never had dinner. I've been to marston's on two separate occasions and had two very different experiences. The first time I went to marston's was for lunch. There was an incredibly long line and the food (we ordered sandwiches/fries) was greasy and heavy. The service was slow and we were puzzled as to all the hype around marston's. The second time I went to marston's was for breakfast. I went with my mama on a friday morning so we didn't have any wait. We ordered an omelet and french toast. The server was very pleasant and responsive. We told her we wanted an extra plate to share, but she was kind enough to have kitchen split the dishes for us. The fantastic french toast really was fantastic and the omelet was hearty and had the right amount of cheese to vegetable to egg ratio. So my final take away from marston's...you should only visit for breakfast. If only they would play to their strengths and serve breakfast all day. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon after our yearly Halloween shopping at STATS. Thankfully, the breakfast fans had left as we did not have any waiting at all. My husband ordered his standard vegetarian burger, but what he loves the most are the sweet-potato fries; crisped just right with a bit of salt to get that sweet/salty flavor. Although it wasn't on the menu, I ordered the Salmon Tempura fish & chips with teriyaki ginger cole slaw & skinny fries. Not gonna lie, it's my favorite fish & chips. We both ordered iced teas; my husband asked for regular while I had passion fruit - both were unsweetened and perfectly delicious. The service was fast and quite satisfactory. My only complaint was it's tight quarters and people with huge baby strollers seem to flock to that place. They do serve on the quaint little porch, but when it's hot outside you wanna sit in some air. But again, my issue is with the clientele and NOT the restaurant. This is a great little breakfast spot in Pasadena that should have at least 4 to 4.5 stars. So many times I go to a 5 star spot and it sucks balls. That's why I hate and love yelp. My wife ordered the blueberry pancakes which were so fluffy and delicious, the andouille sausage had a nice spiciness to it and was a generous portion. Breakfast here is great! I had the 7 grain pancakes, very tasty and I am very picky about my hot cakes. I wish they had a short stack option because 4 face sized pancakes are hard to choke down. If I'd written this review six months ago, it would have been four stars. But in Feb, we took my in-laws to Marston's for dinner, after telling them how much we like the place. It was a total disappointment. The salads were good, as always, as was the asparagus tempura (a favorite). Our entrees were all over the map. The scallops were good, the fish tacos were fine, the jambalaya risotto was bland and the linguine was just plain bad. We sent back the linguine, and when it was returned 10 mins later, it was still completely tasteless (everyone at the table tried it to check). After that, we decided not to bother sending the risotto back for improvement. We had always loved everything at Marston's, so 2 bad entrees was a shock. I asked the waitress if there was a new chef, and she said no - in fact, the owner was cooking that night. Oops! So I guess we'll give it another chance, but it's hard to justify when there's Elements Kitchen so close by. Seeing Michael Gross from Family Ties (sha na na na...) at dinner didn't compensate. Oh, Marston's, how I miss thee! I dream about the idea of it and revel once when experiencing it; the thought of their thick cornflake crusted french toast, accompanied by a cup of coffee (and H2O to balance out, of course), as good friends catch up always make me happy. The parking is limited (so often have to resort to the surrounding neighborhood) and the line is usually long, but it's in a residential area in a house after all; what do we expect? Since I've moved out of the area, it's marked as a go-to spot to catch up with friends during a visit back to Pasadena on a sunny day. Not recommended for a large group (no more than four) and not recommended on Rose Bowl morning game days. So all in all, four stars for the overall experience and the repeat factor value. read more
