Not sure why it's our thing but my boyfriend and I always bring along a sub (hoagie/grinder) when we go hiking. Like, not a practical, compact sub they we gracefully eat at the summit of a long arduous climb. But a giant, messy sub swimming in vinegar. We never have enough napkins and the wind always blows lettuce all over the place, but it's our tradition. Loved Mangialardo's and the G Man, specifically. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and perfectly balanced. A huge sandwich that was easily shared between the both of us. Nom nom nom! So I saw this place in the WP as one of the greatest sammies in the area. Now y'all know I had to try it out. I got the most popular sandwich, the G man. This is a massive eight inch sub that has ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, fontina cheese, provolone cheese, and oregano. You have a choice of a hard or a soft roll. I didn't know which one to try so the staff told me that the hard was what she preferred as it was crunchy on the top and soft in the center. Know this, that sammie was punished! Why because it was daggone good! Everything was uber fresh, and it was hella filling. The only issue that I had was the roll, chile, hard is not the word. It is over hard, and it took a wee bit of an effort to eat. Its all good, that wont stop me, when I go back, the soft roll is a go. I have known the owner for years. I even sold his family a Jeep Cherokee. my dad was a metropolitan police ofricer and he used to go there and pick up a sub for .25c because the police department would no longer allow them to give subs to the officers for free . My school ordered a small group lunch from here this afternoon. As my coworker described, it's one of those places that's really old school. You should know what you want when you are at the ordering counter, and do not hold up the line by staring at the short menu. It's an Italian deli, no frills, done well. I had a roast beef and cheese sandwich with hot peppers. The bread was soft and fresh. The roast beef was tender, but I'd have preferred more rare. The actual size of the sandwich was really large for $9! If I wasn't so hungry and had self-control I would have saved the other half for the next day. The hot peppers and deli mustard added flavorful touches. Do not expect to find anything fancy toppings-wise here; just plain old basic (but delicious) sammiches! read more

We ordered two sandwiches and they were beyond scrumptious. I wished I lived closer! The G man sandwich was absolutely what an Italian sandwich should be. The soft roll(hard roll is available) was fresh and made the sandwich. The meats were plentiful and the shredded lettuce and thinly sliced onions with the oil/vinegar mixture can't be beat. We also ordered the Roast beef which was also a huge hit. My mouth is still watering! Bummer that they are only open weekdays, but I know my waistline will be better for it. A hidden gem! Just adding yet another 5 star review to the mix. The sandwiches are reasonably priced and delicious. The meats and cheeses are so fresh, it's refreshing. You can't go wrong. As others have mentioned, the hours are limited, so check before you go. Note that there is no place to sit and eat inside the deli; you gotta grab and go. My friend asked me to pick up a pizza sub from Mangialardo's. I could guesss what a pizza sub was but had never heard of Mangialardo's despite living just a few minutes away. I thought it was kind of a silly name (in Italian, mangia = eat...) but I went in and sure enough it's the real deal -- a small neighborhood italian deli with no BS -- and Mangialardo is simply the family name of the proprietor. I snagged a G-Man on a soft roll, no mayo but yes mustard, all the toppings and both hot and sweet peppers. Delicious. It's an explosion of all the right flavors -- the perfect balance of meats, cheeses, oil-and-vinegar coated onions and lettuce, and tangy peppers. All at once. Can't beat it. A soft roll piled high with cold cuts, chunks of cheese, and all the fixings? I could be describing any sub sandwich, but say the magic words "...from Mangialardo's" to those in the know and you'd be hard pressed to keep said sandwich to yourself. I can't pinpoint one thing that makes a Manigalardo & Sons sandwich awesome but I can describe the g-man to you in more detail: a soft roll (though there's a hard roll option) that's slightly chewy and holds together well even after the flavors have seeped in to the bread, layers of at least three different types of cold cut high enough to be satisfying but not in such large portions that it's difficult to eat, chunks of real provolone - not the plasticky kind you might find elsewhere, shreds of lettuce, slices of tomato, and then finished with onions, hot or mild peppers, mustard, mayo, italian seasoning, and - I think - oil and vinegar. In the time it takes you to get the sandwich back to your desk, or to the nearest park bench (no seating to be found in the store!) the flavors will have macerated together and you may find that you just consumed an entire sandwich (12"!) when - elsewhere - you're hard-pressed to consume a half. To be honest, save for the descriptions elsewhere online I've never bothered to remember the cold cuts on a g-man (you can ask, they'll rattle off the list for you, but you won't find a description on the menu or in the store) but, as I think I've implied so far: it. doesn't. matter. This sandwich trumps all other italian subs I've had in DC and beyond. Ordering is easy - walk up to the back counter, let someone know what you want and topping choice, clutch the ticket they hand you while contemplating chip, side, and drink choices (mostly utz chips, and the gamut of bottled soft drinks, teas, etc), retrieve your sandwich when your number is called, and pay at the front register before you go (cash only!). Don't worry about a wait - there's usually always one -they'll get you out the door soon enough. Perhaps the biggest downside to Mangialardo's are their hours - 7:30am-3pm, Monday through Friday only, and closed for holidays. Can't make it during the week? Take a long lunch or a vacation day. If I were sedated, blindfolded, and taken to Mangialardo and Sons for lunch and aroused with a few slaps to the face, my first groggy-eyed impressions might be that I had been driven to Baltimore's Little Italy or Philadelphia's Italian Market. But, as I walked up to the door, looking both left and right to reconcile the fact that I was really at 13th and Pennsylvania Ave., SE, I was glad that I didn't have to travel up Interstate 95. I had heard of Mangialardo's signature G-Man sub and had wanted to try it for the longest time. So, on my visit, I ordered the G-Man, of course (a behemoth of a sandwich complete with all the fixings). It featured various Italian cold cuts (such as ham, bologna, salami, and mortadella) and a handful of cheeses like provolone, mozzarella, and fontina. All of this was dressed with oil and vinegar, mayo, fresh Italian herbs, hot peppers, lettuce, tomato, and onions. Customers have a choice of ordering the "soft" or the "hard" roll. The young lady who took my order at the counter, upon being questioned, strongly recommended my getting the hard roll; and, I obliged. The hard roll is firm, chewy, but forgiving and provides a great platform for the other ingredients. In fact, the bread was outstanding and, perhaps, stole the show. Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of cold cut subs. I don't eat a lot of them; but, I duly recognized that the G-Man was very good. The overwhelming feeling was that I was eating something extremely fresh and wholesome. Few would regard the G-Man as destination dining. But, as a convenient meal for someone in the neighborhood, it hits the spot. In fact, Mangialardo and Sons is only open for lunch; and, they aren't open on the weekends. These factors really make it hard for many people to eat here. But, on the chance that you might be around 13th and Pennsylvania Ave., SE on the rare occasion during lunch on a weekday (and with lobster rolls and Korean tacos decidedly inaccessible), consider getting the G-Man. I hardly ever venture too far into Southeast DC and I've only gone past the Eastern Market neighborhood further into Southeast DC a handful of times, but I wanted to see what all the hype about Mangialardo & Sons was about. Since this deli is only open on weekdays (until 3pm), I decided to visit on Presidents' Day (today, actually!). It was a blisteringly cold day (13 degrees F), but I made the trip out to the Potomac Ave neighborhood anyway. The deli is located just a block or so away from the Potomac Ave metro station, so that's perfect. And the food was just absolutely divine! I ordered the famous "G" man sub. This sandwich came with a monstrously large amount of meat and cheese (which is AMAZING), as it included ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, provalone, fontina, and hot peppers. Mmm, mmm, mm, so delicious! I got mine on a hard roll (8 inches) with some lettuce, tomato, and mayo added. So, so, so good! I can't even begin to describe how delicious this was. The portion was perfect and the meat was simply divine. Just two bites of my sandwich and I was in heaven. And for $6.50 too! That's such a great deal, especially since so many other delis in the DC area try to overcharge you. And the service was excellent! Very efficient, and the server was very nice! We had a brief 2-minute conversation about the weather (what with the impending storm in DC). Just a couple tips - -They are open for only a limited number of hours. It's really just a weekday lunch (and breakfast) type of place. Weekdays only, until 3pm. -They don't offer any half sandwiches. Their standard is an 8" sandwich. -There is no seating inside this restaurant. It's purely a carry-out deli. -Get the "G" Man! It's very famous and I've read about it on food blogs too. -I had heard this place is cash only. I made sure to plan accordingly and have cash on me. However, I saw a sign in the restaurant that said they are now accepting credit cards. I would take cash with you just in case anyway, but for those who forget, there may be a credit card payment option now. It's just all around a very friendly, family-style deli and I would certainly visit again and give the highest recommendation for this place! read more
