This family-owned deli has been around for over 60 years and bears historical and cultural significance to the District. It's a no-table counter-service carryout that doesn't take credit cards and is only open during typical work hours. A true mom-and-pop eatery. Like everyone else, I got the G-Man, an Italian sub piled with ham, salami, mortadella, pepperoni, provolone, fontina, and hot peppers. This sandwich is like a D.C. institution. Ingredients are all local. The bread is locally made - hard rolls by Catania Bakery; soft rolls come from H&S Bakery in neighboring Baltimore. You can get the G-Man on either a soft or hard roll. Soft rolls are becoming more popular while hard rolls are more of an old-school thing. I got mine on a hard roll and it packed great flavor. The legend of the sandwich is just as cool as the sandwich itself: In the 1970s, two FBI agents were en route to a Redskins game and stopped at the deli. They demanded that the owner, Antonio Mangialardo, whip up something special. The G-Man is what they got. Word later spread throughout the Justice Department about the sandwich and soon feds kept coming in requesting the signature sandwich. Even to this day, this place is still a spot for the law enforcement. They even keep a board covered with duty patches from local police and firefighters. As I mentioned, Mangialardo & Sons is only open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am - 3:00 pm. So if you want the G-Man, you'll have to take a long lunch or go on your day off. This coveted sandwich shop has hours that make it difficult to stop by and try the beloved G-Man.The trek through DC snow is all worth it for one of the most perfect Italian hoagies I've ever tasted. For around $7, you get an authentic Italian hoagie full of delicately slivered meats, crunchy lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers and pepper relish. I've had both the hard and soft rolls and I do lean more towards the hard as it holds the sandwich together nicely. The sandwich feels lovingly made and is perfectly assembled. There is an incredible feel of authenticity as the amicable workers hand you your parchment wrapped sandwich which is the purest form of an Italian. The tangy relish clings perfectly onto the meat and you get a lovely crunch of lettuce with each bite. The best Italian sub shop in town. So much has been written about it, I just needed to add to the chorus. Get the G-Man, their ode to Italian pork products. It comes on a hard or a soft roll. The hard roll is harder to eat, but probably more rewarding texture and taste wise. The soft roll is more popular. If you get the soft roll, lettuce is an absolute requirement. It'll stand between the oil/vinegar or mayo and the bread to prevent a mushy mess. The sweet and hot peppers are both good -- the sweet are my preference as the hot just aren't terribly hot. Nobody has touched the walls or the counter in a decade and the dust faded patches from police officers firefighters and ambulance drivers from around the region adorn the biggest part of the wall. The famous G-man sub is great but for my money nothing beats hot pastrami with sweet peppers and provolone - they will ask if you want to hard bread or soft. I eat here at least twice a month, that's saying something. This has to be one of the best deli's in the DC area that always has fresh ingredients and is consistent. I always get the turkey and cheese on a soft roll with everything on it, peppers hot of course, and fall in love each time. It can be crowded during the lunch hour, but the wait is not longer than 5 mins depending on how many sandwiches you get. If you haven't tried Mangialardo's I suggest you go. Working on the other side of the Anacostia in SE means that you don't really have any good options to go out to lunch unless you drive to navy yard or the barracks. That said, whenever a coworker mentions he's doing a group order to mangialardos, I am in. You cannot sit down and eat your food. You also have to watch the hours they are open. They close early on week days, and sometimes its hard to find a parking space out front. There are meters. Make sure you ride with someone, - you can jump out (just in case) and hurry in and place your order, or call in advance like we used to do. It's 7am, and now I'm in the mood for a GMAN!!! I have grown up on Mangialardo subs- my uncle was a police officer in the district and my mother worked on the Hill, so we frequented this place. My uncle has retired and lives in Florida now, but every time he visits, he makes it a priority to stop in NUMEROUS times. I cannot tell you just how special and how good everything is.
