Cute little gluten free bakery / cafe in eastern market area. They have outdoor seating but I stayed inside since it was a rainy day. But great place to bring your laptop, do a little work and order some treats. All the baked goods were very yummy. And the barista was very helpful and gave great recommendations! Good: the vegan cupcakes are probably the best around. Bad: their prices are high in comparison with GF bakeries basically in any major city, and they have an illegal "No Cash" policy (illegal under DC law. The owner should look up the law because she's way out of compliance: https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/laws/23-187), but charge a 3% fee if you pay by credit card, which you are required to. They basically give you no option to avoid paying a fee. (In response to the owner's response below: They have a sign that says NO CASH, so is a customer supposed to believe they'll accept cash IF the customer has exact change, as the owner says they will? And if they do accept that cash, then they would, in fact, have cash on hand anyway, which undercuts her claim they have no cash on hand...but they don't because they have a sign that says NO CASH. Every other business in the community doesn't blame the city for their own non-compliant policies, as the owner does, and accepts cash in the same circumstances. Plenty of places are happy to take cash and prefer it, and it is required by DC law. I was surprised to see this NO CASH sign after emailing with the owner about it *a year and a half ago.* I walked right out when I saw the sign.) They also now have a self-serve bar which invites the spread of things like norovirus. There are no sneeze guards. They make it hard for me to support them even though I really have been trying to for years. read more

Ive never been to a GF bakery before, and my diet doesn't need to be GF, but I wanted to try it out! The cappuccino was pretty good/standard -- nice and hot tho which was good for the windy day. And the buttermilk biscuit was aight. It was pretty dry but it filled me up for my afternoon at the zoo. I sat at one of the tables to read my book and the vibes were high. The place is cute but very small- not a lot of places to sit and eat. Seemed to be mostly take out orders. We tried so many items. Landing on a few favorites. Wow! My best friend got some vegan treats for my sister & her fam, and I got to taste some. Vegan apple cider donuts?? Vegan chocolate donut holes??! Who does vegan donut holes?! It was so good that my parents and I had to visit on a separate occasion. It's a cute little cafe and the inside is very charming. The staff are really sweet and we were so delighted to order. Stocked up on donut holes and the apple cider donuts. They have dairy treats too -- my mom got a lemon treat that she really enjoyed. I have to provide the caveat that I'm not gluten free, but will eat gluten free on occasion. So when I stopped in here, I got an iced latte and a slice of banana bread. The latte was great! I'll definitely get coffee here again. The banana bread? Not so much. Maybe it's good for GF banana bread, I wouldn't know. But it was gross compared to real banana bread. Ordered an apple cider donut, banana bread, vanilla cupcake and cinnamon bun via uber eats. I almost ordered the donut holes but at $3+ a pop, opted not to, especially since I can get those from Trader Joe's and from Katz for a fraction of the cost. Not sure what they are in store but they are probably inflated in the online ordering app too. Turns out my banana bread was pumpkin bread. They also sent me a red velvet cupcake instead of vanilla, so I was a little sad about that, until I had a bite of the apple cider donut. All I can say is WOW. I've had my fair share of GF donuts and this one was by far the best. So much flavor, so much granulated sugar, so moist. I wish I ordered more. A must try from gluten free peps in the DMV! I've bought their baked goods mixes from shop made DC, but the food is even better when they make it lol. I tried the pumpkin cupcake, apple cider donut, and the bacon egg and cheese biscuit. Everything was delicious and moist, which is something that's difficult to do with gluten free food. Staff is probably some of the best people ever, they are so friendly, smile a lot and have good humor. This is the second time we've come here, I forgot to review the first and not sure what we ordered... but this second time... everything was disappointing. Donuts have a healthy taste, almond flour? Outside glaze was good but would not get again. I think the cinnamon bun was inedible, we did heat it up, my kid liked it though. I for sure got the Gruyère sandwich before, and ordered it again for kids. They wouldn't even eat it. And we love gruyere in our house! I finished it, and it really wasn't as good as I remember. My friend, who was not gf, said her sandwich was inedible. Bread just tasted too eggy. She got a blt I believe. Not sure we will come back after this. And I hate saying that, we love to support gf bakeries! Maybe we just ordered the wrong items! The cider donuts were better than the ones from the apple orchard (so I'm told). I'm in this area often but didn't know of Sweet Crimes. I have a huge sweet tooth so this was right up my alley. I found a parking spot right away so I was happy about that. The service was amazing. Also, I didn't even realize it was the last hour which meant donuts were 50% off. I tried the cinnamon roll, cinnamon sugar donut, and a cookie. My favorite was the donut. The cinnamon roll was good but it had an aftertaste that I wasn't familiar with. I had a good experience. It's a bit small on the inside but it has a welcoming atmosphere. I came in during an early work morning to try out this place. Got a couple of donuts for my friends, who told me they felt the donut tasted good, nothing that would implicate they were gf in their flavoring. For myself, I got a flat white and the carrot cake. The flat white was so good!!! Slightly sweet, using oat milk. The carrot cake, however.... Was just ok. It was good enough to eat, but not delicious enough to go back again for the cake itself. And I'm gf. So the cake itself was really dense, and the cream cheese on top was lovely. To balance out how thick the cake tasted, it may have been better to add more of the icing on top... the cake was so thick and dense that it tasted more like a sweet bread than a cake. read more

We are fortunate to have Sweet Crimes not far from our home which is east of the river. One member of our household cannot eat gluten. It is amazing to know every single item is safe to eat. These are a few of our favorites: - chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting - mini quiche - donuts (personally, I do not even like donuts and love these cake-style donuts) - chocolate babka - for holidays we have ordered the star bread -- YUM! The staff are always very nice. The online ordering system can be a tad complicated and it is always good to check your order before you leave. They get very hectic around holidays. We are grateful to have this delicious and lovely business nearby. * If you are visiting from out of town and need a gluten free / celiac safe spot for breakfast or lunch, Sweet Crimes is ideal.
