Best dinner experience ever. Dinner was an excellent experience led by the wonderful "Earl the pearl". We started our evening with a Lychee Martini and smoked coconut old fashioned, fantastic craft cocktails. The butternut squash soup was delicious, thick and rich. The Caesar salad is a table side presentation and just as delicious. Our entrees were the curry snapper and the lemon pepper snapper. We couldn't decide who made the better choice. They were both amazing. We ended the evening with the flambe' bananas, another table side presentation. The pianist, Rufus was great, and the entire staff was warm and welcoming. The property is beautiful, and the building is a showpiece of art and antique pieces. We can't wait to come back and do the exact same thing again! read more

All day happy hour on Friday is definitely unmatched. The menu did not disappoint at all. For dinner, we ordered the chow mein and the salmon--I actually saw this place on TikTok, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Both dishes were so good. We also tried the escovitch fish, which was very tasty. It was a little small for the market price, but the flavors were definitely there--nothing was left on the bone. Highly recommend, and I will definitely be back. We went on a Friday when there was a live DJ, which added to the great atmosphere. My experience at this restaurant was pretty good overall. I saw the online reviews and instagram reels for brunch so I had to check it out for myself and I love Caribbean food, duh. The place is quite spacious (two levels) and is decorated nicely. Our server was awesome. He was very attentive and gave really good/honest recommendations on the food. Although the menu was somewhat limited and rather pricey, I did some really good options. I ended up ordering the shrimp and crab meat over grits. The meal was plenty, flavorful and savory. I also took advantage of the bottomless mimosas and was glad that I did lol. Everyone enjoyed their meal. One random thing is that the bathroom (I was seated upstairs) was clean. We visited Sapodillas on a Tuesday evening with no reservations. I have had this restaurant on my hit list for a few months so I was super excited to visit. The bar was full but the dining tables were wide open. We were seated in the dining area and our server came right away. We both ordered a spirit. Mine had far too much soda so it was watered down. For food we went with the mango habanero wings, spinach, cabbage, sweet potato fries and Mac & cheese. The wings didn't really have the sauce on them it ran onto the plate and left the first few flavorless. The cabbage was one the dry side, the spinach was too salty but the Mac and cheese was perfect. The sweet potato fries were on the dry side. Overall I think the place is cute, cozy and has a good vibe. I was hoping for more in terms of the food. Such a great addition for this area! read more

Always enjoy visiting my friends at Sapodilla's. They recently celebrated one-year of bringing elevated Caribbean vibes to the amazing Anacostia neighborhood. My favorite dishes are the Tamarind BBQ wings and the Branzino. After visiting more than a few times, I happily tried something new when I noticed updates to the menu. The Jerk Chicken Sandwich was delicious, not overwhelmingly spicy, and full of flavor. The meat could've been a bit more tender, but overall I enjoyed the sandwich. The fries were made to perfection. Let's start with the good: this was my first time having Guyanese food and it was BANGING!!! Not pictured were the oysters which had the right amount of kick, the brussel sprout which were wonderful, and the cod fritters which along with the dipping sauce also packed a punch. We went for brunch but with how good things were, I'd definitely come back for the dinner menu. The mango, sorrel, ginger mocktail was yummy!!! Now for the less than good: the music was loud you could barely hear the person sitting next to you (next time I'll come when there isn't a DJ blaring out the hits). And I felt rushed to put in our orders. They close at 7pm on Sundays but the kitchen stopped cooking at 5-5:15pm but they'd still seat you. Hey friends! I met a friend here for dinner. I did some Yelp research for a Black-owned spot with great vibes in DC and this spot came highly recommended. On Fridays, they have all-day happy hour, amazing! We ordered a few items off of the happy hour menu. The beef patties were enjoyable, we wished it was a bit spicier. The fried shrimp and french fries stole the show! The shrimp were golden, huge & well-seasoned. Fries were the perfect balance of crispy exterior and soft interior. Our beef patties took a while to come out, so our server gave us complimentary coco bread while we waited. The coco bread was delicious! The texture was amazingly soft, our only distaste was that the bread lacked moisture. Drinks were strong! We ordered two Rum Punches. Not overly sweet, perfect balance of flavor and bartender was generous with the liquor. -Great atmosphere. Dim lighting. Great music, not too loud. I attended a birthday event here and the staff was beyond accommodating. Every couple of minutes you saw their staff picking up glassware or tidying up after guests. I would highly recommend for events. My friend had about 50+ guests upstairs. There were not enough coat racks upstairs but draping over the railing is fine. The food was delicious. I especially loved the lamb burger, beef patty, and chickpeas. Chefs kiss. The bar staff was on it and moving swiftly with the amount of people they were servicing. The decor upstairs is stunning, especially the cloth art work on the ceiling. Let's get into the food. We first ordered the charbroiled oysters and the wings as appetizers. The oysters stole the show! I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed them! The wings were okay, jerk wings specifically weren't as spicy as I would've liked. I visited this restaurant over the weekend with some friends. The waiter was nice but the service was terrible along with the food. We had a reservation for 12pm however we didnt start getting our food until 1:30pm. The food was served cold. My meal was not good so it was taken off the bill. The oxtail dish had no meat on the bone and it was $40. The codfish fritters odd tasting and cold. I think the Caribbean theme is not working for this restaurant. My experience here was pretty average, but I did have great service and was warmly greeted by the host when I walked in. The restaurant has 2 levels and lots of space. There's a bar area with TVs as well. I started with the jerk wings, which had good flavor but quite a bit of breading. For my main, I had the stew chicken with rice and peas and sautéed spinach instead of cabbage. Everything tasted good, but the rice to chicken ratio was way off. I think they absolutely could have included more chicken. The bread pudding was okay, but nothing special. The Caribbean flower margarita was my favorite thing on the menu, as it's interesting and contains sorrel. I would probably only go back for happy hour or to check out their brunch but either way, this is a solid and much needed addition to the neighborhood read more

Yessss...Sapodilla's is a must try!!! We had the BEST caribbean food in a very long time, especially for the DMV area, at this restaurant. First, I came here to dine in with a friend to celebrate her bday (on a Saturday), and food was good; then I happen to return here the following week with my mom (on a Sunday) for to-go order. Now full transparency-whoever they have in the kitchen on Sundays needs a raise...an award...maybe even the key to the city (hahaha)..cause the food was absolutely delicious this day! The mac and cheese, the oxtails, the jerk salmon, the fried plantains, everything was sooooo good!! I was shocked ;) I believe the chef came out of the kitchen when we arrived to pick up our food. This is such a culinary thing, particularly in Caribbean culture, when the chefs come out of the kitchen to see (and sometimes even greet) the patrons..and especially when they know their food is hitting! I tried to call the restaurant several times after our dinner (perhaps 10-15mins prior to closing), to just give my compliments to the chef, but no one answered the phone. The customer service is also very polite and personable (in person and over the phone to place orders). The restaurant itself is a caribbean speakeasy vibe with booth and high top seatings, and an upstairs area perfect for hosting..(and my ppl know I love to host a soirée). Supposedly, they have a great happy hour too. The owner is from Guyana, based on the flag mural on the wall, and the food is traditional caribbean, with a few twists..like the ginger branzino. The surrounding area is not (historically) in the safest area, but they're trying build up the anacostia area with arts, culture, and diversity...it so far its looking great! The better half loves to put his good name on any new business in the DC area. Businesses in south east will always be establishments we come to love on. Love goes both ways though. We walked into this very cute Caribbean restaurant that is located off of Marion Barry Ave, IYKYK. The who's who of D.C. were there. IT personalities were checking this place out so I was happy we were trying this place too! The decor is nice if you compare it to the competition next door, a little more upscale looking. Ambiance live, giving modern and fun. We came for brunch and the menu was underwhelming. For this to be a Caribbean spot the menu items were very traditional for brunch. When I think brunch I think breakfast/lunch options but with plantains or you know, cabbage, rice. The only egg options on the menu were a traditional American breakfast, an omelette and steak and eggs. Not so Caribbean. Because of the location, parking is hard to find. Safety is always a concern, no matter how far this area has come its SE. There is a homeless shelter near by, and well like I said, IYKYK. Overall, we weren't blown away with our food, if you're going to charge top dollar for traditional food make it to perfection, our meal was just subpar! Eggs were served over cooked. Not only was the food just okay, the service lacked. Because of the set up, you walk in and are immediately at the host stand. Upon arrival the host greeted us and asked us to stand by the bar. At opening when no one is there, you should know where your guest are sitting and sit them immediately with an empty restaurant in plain view. Host was great but clearly unorganized, how do you make people wait when you just opened? The waitress was nice but overwhelmed, and I am unsure what the other employees were doing. There were other employees but not assisting her. The manager eventually stepped in to help but that was at the end of our meal to pick up plates. I'd get into it but the food wasn't anything to write home about. I didn't even get toast or biscuit with my "American" breakfast. My poor honey, his wallet gave him a BIG ole side eye on the way out. Shrugs :/ I guess you can say we got robbed in broad daylight in SE DC. We came, we conquered but I don't think we'd come back. Like I said love goes both ways and it must show in intricate details; price points for food need to be comparable to what is available elsewhere. Went here for their all night Friday happy hour. It's been on my list for awhile and it didn't disappoint. Love the cool modern vibes and it has an upstairs which I wasn't aware of initially. Our server was very friendly and gave great suggestions since this was our first time there. We got the lamb sliders, jerk broiled oysters, and Brussels sprouts. Everything was delicious. The flavor of the lamb sliders was more Mediterranean than Caribbean but still good. And I don't usually like oysters but I agreed to try them and I'm glad I did. Flavorful indeed, I would get them again. Can't recall the cocktail I had but it tasted like sorrel which I like. They're bringing Caribbean flavor to a beautiful space in Anacostia near the new Grounded coffee shop. Everything I loved, - THE MUSIC 10/10 - Friendly team and staff - Easy seating at the bar upstairs or downstairs - Curry goat was our favorite dish, followed by the shrimp and grits, followed by the Chesapeake omelets - Bathrooms were clean Everything we didn't love as much, - Didn't care too much for the ceviche - Missing crab meat in our shrimp and grits - Restaurant is on the pricier side. Another quality restaurant has adorned an area of Washington, DC that was notoriously known as one of the worse areas in the Nation's Capitol. Anacostia like Harlem, the Renaissance is a joy to see! Only four months old, this two level Caribbean cuisine restaurant is uber popular so reservations are a must. They've done an amazing job with the design and decor. There are large bars on both levels, the upstairs level bar hosts an ample amount of tv's, making this a destination for all of the sporting events. Our first experience was brunch. The food was excellent. We started off with the Jerk broiled oysters that were simply delicious. I'm not an omelette guy but the menu was a little limited so I went with the Chesapeake Omelette because it was filled with crab meat. She chose the traditional breakfast w/bacon. Again, the taste cannot be beat. The potatoes were EVERYTHING! Service was a little off. Not completely our servers fault. She was the only one working the lower level and we were in the first wave of patrons this past Sunday. Honestly, this was a 3.5 experience noting a couple of things that need course correcting. As a new restaurant, please bend over backwards to not have your patrons waiting over thirty minutes for their food. Next, menu pricing. $28 for 5 Charbroiled oysters is a little steep and also, I hate odd numbers, at least give 6. $30+ dollars for your Chesapeake Omelette and Crab Shrimp and grits respectively, is over industry pricing. Check out Jula's on the Potomac. They charge $25 for their lobster omelette and they're located in Old Town Alexandria with rooftop views of the Potomac. A few minutes later, the owner's husband (I'm pretty sure) was leading me to a table. I was thankful that they accommodated me faster than I initially expected. I started with the Caribbean Flower Margarita, which was made with sorrel. I loved that the drink menu included drinks made with traditional Caribbean ingredients. For dinner I had the jerk wings with a side of rice and peas and those wings were AMAZING! I had to try the rum cake for dessert and was also impressed with that. The service and music also made for a great experience. Parking was a bit difficult, but not impossible if you're ok with the possibility of a little walk. Now this spot came highly recommended. So I decided to stop by for a solo brunch. I arrived not too long after opening and grabbed a seat at the bar. I was handed a few menus and noticed that it happened to be restaurant week, and they were offering a 3 course meal for only $35 (sounds good right?). So I said I would get that, but wanted to add a few things that I wanted to try. So after orders drink, I ordered the crab rangoons to start. I was informed that the crab rangoons were not an option (mind you the restaurant just opened). So I asked if I could get the akee & saltfish fritters instead, and after a few moments I was told those also were not an option. Mind you these were off the restaurant week menu, so there were only about 3-4 options in each category. So starting to get frustrated, I kindly asked what was available. The reply was the Brussel sprouts. I agreed but also ordered the jerk charbroiled oysters. The Brussel sprouts were actually good tho, cooked well and had a good flavor to them. Not what I wanted, but good. The oysters were just average, and for $28 I probably wouldn't order them again, too much bread crumbs, the jerk sauce or oysters didn't stand out in the dish. My drink was good. The old fashioned was made good and was strong. The catfish and grits were good. The grits were creamy and had some lump crabmeat. The catfish was lightly breaded and didn't have that catfish taste to it (IYKYK), and the cream sauce was good. The eggs were scrambled to my liking. So I enjoyed that. Overall I would say my experience wasn't everything I hoped it would have been. The main entree was good, but it's a little on the more pricey side, and for them not to accommodate their customers and not have so many options available first thing was kinda crazy to me. Me and a few friends decided to check out this spot located in Anacostia. What a treat! From the service to the drinks and food and space itself everything was beautifully crafted and felt special and upscale. We all got something different but EVERYTHING was so good! Seasoned to perfection and very flavorful. I got the chicken and croissant waffle. It came with a fresh jam which was god but I did have to ask for syrup on the side. Divine! Steak was nice size. Nice char taste. Oxtail sauce was good. Very tender. Grits sauce was great. Creamy and delish. The drinks were good and the bartender gave us a free drink of something new that they were working on. YALLLLL everything here was amazingggg. The service was absolutely great. Out waiter was super kind, and explained the dishes if we had any questions. The music in the restaurant was a vibe, especially on a Saturday! I love it when I can sing and eat at the same time lol. For the food, my favorite was probably the shrimp and grits because it had the crab within the grits itself. The sauce was really good as well. Next up was the crab omelette. Literally perfect and if I didn't have high cholesterol lol, I would eat it everyday. As for the goat roti, it was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The buss up was also very good and I would taste that it was from scratch. I will say though, the actual curry gravy that the goat sits in is a little salty, but I would still definitely get this dish again, just with a tall glass of water. June is Caribbean American Heritage Month! As a proud Caribbean lady, I'm happy to have found this place and can picture myself returning for more happy hours, brunch, and dinner! If you grew up in the Brooklyn, NY you would understand why this place hits close to home! The vibe was everything reminiscent of a good Brooklyn eatery in the Flatbush area. That meant that it gave pure Caribbean vibes from the vibrant decor to the warm welcome. I felt at home when I walked through the doors. Shoutout to Carrie, the waitress who took time to teach me about the restaurant, recommend a few items, and check on me continuously. Her extraordinary service was well appreciated. And, might I add that she's been at the location since day 1-4 months ago! Next, I have to shoutout the Manager Tara! Tara came over to greet us and she spoke to us about the owner's other location and the dream behind this SE location. Tara, like her staff, was very welcoming and that says a lot. Now that I've given earned flowers where it's due, let's get into what the people need to know. Happy Hour: Happy Hour runs on Monday-Thursday from 3pm-7pm and on Friday, it goes from 3pm until...baby! You're not getting a Friday night vibes like that anywhere so GO support! Happy Hour prices: I've added the menu for your view and allow me to say this, the portions are HUGE so come ready to order food and be filled! Drinks: I ordered the Sapodilla's Rum Punch on my first round. Thoughts: this was authentic island rum punch with just enough rum to keep you mellow yet functional lol it was gooooooood! My next drink was the Caribbean Flower Margarita: another drink with just the right mix of rum and very refreshing, a summer hit indeed! Not pictured but my favorite: the Planter's Punch! Honey this drink was IT! I enjoyed the others but this drink had a finisher to it, the bitters, and that flavor took it over the top and had me feeling the extra vibes. What a crowd pleaser. Food: I ordered the Jerk Broiled Oysters, Hot Honey Shrimp, and not pictured but sampled, the Lamb Sliders. Jerk Broiled Oysters: they were OUT OF THIS WORLD! Who is the chef? This person is a culinary genius. The oysters were fresh and the topping....the topping was a flavor trip around the sun. I cannot stop raving about these because they were THAT GOOD! Hot Honey Shrimp: have you ever had fried shrimp with a batter so crunchy and divine, you forgot that you were eating shrimp and was about to devour the tail? LOL that was my experience. That shrimp battle brought the seasoning and the shrimp underneath continued the flavor. The crunch on each bite sent my mouth into space and my tummy actually thanked me for my selection. The fries were also very crispy and well seasoned and might I add, the portion was more than enough for me. The shrimps were very large and the fries were generous. I truly enjoyed this dish. Not pictured but worth a shoutout. The thing you NEED to have...the lamb sliders. Listen, I've tried numerous lamb dishes from several restaurants and this dish is a top competitor. This lamb sliders was seasoned to perfection, dripping with flavor, and complimented by the most delicious tzatziki, placed on a freshly baked bun. I swear by this dish! After a remarkable Happy Hour experience, I ordered the rum cake to go. Can I just say...baby who is their pastry chef? Can I order 20 of these to go???? This rum cake is not for the weak lol it has goood rum flavors. But it's so moist and scrumptious. Can you tell that I've had an incredible time? I indeed did and I say all this or say, GO VISIT! I went here for brunch and there wasn't a non-meat option that I wanted to eat on the menu, so I told the server, and he offered the veggie platter which wasn't on the brunch menu. I was happy that he offered it! The roti and spinach were delicious! The cabbage was fantastic and tasted even better when I reheated it on the stove the next day. The channa and curry potatoes lacked adequate seasoning. It tasted almost like they were made for people who were new to eating Caribbean food. My friend said both needed salt. I think both needed salt, pepper, and a touch more curry. I've also had the spinach patty and a vegetable patty when I stopped in here briefly another time. The crust they use for the patties is elite!! I liked the veggie one the best! The interior is very nice and there's a beautiful mirror on one of the walls. I often see people sitting at the bar after work so if you're interested in checking out their happy hour, I recommend it. I wish I had taken pictures, but I don't have any. We were invited to Sapodilla's for a friend's birthday party. We had reservation that changed from 8 to 6 at the last minute, which they accommodated pretty easily. They had a lot of signature drinks which everyone loved (apparently, they were very strong). We had wings (two flavors), charbroiled oysters, a fried fish croquette (this was a bit salty), sweet plantains and our main courses (red snapper, oxtail, pasta). Everything was delicious overall. This will probably be a new favorite spot for me! My friend and I stopped by for lunch to check out this new spot in Anacostia, right across the bridge and ended up having a great time. We really enjoyed the food and the overall vibe they've created. The space is beautiful; bright, open and spacious with plenty of room for dining. The large window let in a ton of natural light during the day which added to the relaxed atmosphere. There's a full bar on the first floor and although I didn't get a chance to check it out, I heard the upstairs area has a more lounge vibe. I absolutely love the vibe. It was chill and laid-back during lunch, but I can imagine it gets more lively during happy hour. Our service was pretty good and fast. It wasn't too crowded while we were there and our server attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Now let's talk about the food. We had the rasta pasta with chicken, curry chicken and the jerk chicken sandwich. All were delicious, but the rasta pasta was the stand out for me. It had a ton of flavor and I couldn't' get enough of. We also had a few drinks (I unfortunately can't remember the names) and they were all good and refreshing. I will definitely be returning to explore more of the menu especially dinner and happy hour. Overall I loved Sapodilla's. The food was excellent and the space is lovely. My only suggestion would be to add a menu on the website so folks can get a sense of what to expect before visiting. Other than that I highly recommend. I'll definitely be back! read more

I was excited to try Sapodilla's after hearing about the opening of its new location in Anacostia. From the moment you step into the restaurant, you feel a warm and intimate vibe. I had seen many videos of people's food and experiences on social media and everything was spot on! My boyfriend and I came for dinner. We started with the jerk charbroiled oysters, which were super tasty. They had the perfect amount of spice and flavor--just a little too much breadcrumb. For my entrée, I enjoyed the ginger branzino accompanied by Guyanese fried rice and broccolini (they were able to accommodate my request to have this instead of the sautéed spinach). The entire dish was delicious from start to finish. I also want to shout out our server, Jordan. She took excellent care of us the entire time. She was exceptional; she always made sure to frequently communicate with us about our order updates. She also went out of her way to ensure every detail of our orders was correct. In addition to the ambiance and food, she was one of the main reasons I had to give Sapodilla's 5 stars. Sapodilla's was a nice experience, paying homage to Guyanese and Caribbean culture. This is a new Caribbean inspired spot in Anacostia, around the corner from. The The menu has a lot of great options to select from. The menu is a bit on the pricey side so even the happy hour process are on the high end. The space is really nice and has 2 floors, very cute decor and a great spot for date night. On Fridays, they have a dj who plays a great selection of music. I've been twice, both times it was a on a Friday for happy hour. I do plan to try brunch and dinner. Unfortunately, the website has not been updated so it's hard to find out their hours if operation and also any special events. Hopefully, this will be updated soon. My friend and I came for brunch and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The music playlist was on point, service was great, and the decor was lovely. We split the mac and cheese, chicken and croffle, and pumpkin and shrimp with roti. I loved the mac and cheese and chicken and croffle. The chicken and croffle came with a delicious blueberry compote. While I did enjoy the large pieces of shrimp and the roti, the pumpkin was a bit too sweet of an addition for that dish. A new fav!!! I hope they stay in the neighborhood. Today would be my second visit here. My first visit was on a Saturday afternoon brunch! I had the steak and eggs.. I WAS VERY PLEASED! The flavors here are unbeatable. The jerk oyster were super tasty! The flavor on the wings tasted more like bbq instead of jerk, and they were really salty. I really wanted to love the Chesapeake omelette however, the chef left so many crab shells in the omelette it was hard to truly enjoy it. However, the rum cake was phenomenal. Overall the restaurant had a cute vibe and the service was nice. I'd probably come back to try the rest of the menu. read more

Had the opportunity to visit this spot during restaurant week for lunch and What a Treat! First of all! The Vibes is Vibing . Great Caribbean/R&B music, wonderful friendly staff and fabulous quaint ambience. For my choices from the restaurant weekend menu I tried the codfish fritters which were not particularly my fave but they def came with the heat with their Shrimp Rasta pasta and Rum Cake 10/10! They also have happy hour from 3-close on Fridays so I had an opportunity to try the oysters from the HH menu and let me tell you ...OUT OF THIS WORLD BOMB! Needless to say I will be back! read more

My friend and I were in the Anacostia area looking for somewhere to have dinner, and we stumbled across Sapodilla's. Immediately from the entrance, the venue looked very warm and inviting, with a beautiful mural on the wall boasting the Guyanese heritage, and trendy decor. This gave the venue a really elevated appeal. It was a busy Saturday night, and we learned that it was the restaurant's first week of opening. So, massive congratulations to the team - and I look forward to going back again, when I'm sure things will be more seamless with the service and getting orders out. For my cocktail, I had the Rude Gyal - and I can unequivocally say that it was SUCHHHH an amazing cocktail. It was refreshing, spicy and bursting with flavour!! Definitely the highlight of my experience. For food, we had the Lamb Sliders (with geerah and tzatziki) and the balsamic lamb chops (with broccolini and gt fried rice). There was a mix up in the kitchen with the lamb chops, and it took almost an hour for them to come out. Once it did - it unfortunately didn't have the broccolini but cabbage instead. I didn't mind, but for customers that prefer broccolini this might have been an issue. Overall, it was great vibes and the service was good overall. I'd definitely love to go back again when hopefully there's been time to iron out some of the "first week kinks". I've got high hopes, and look forward to supporting more black owned establishments like this more. read more
