Appears to be a dive bar at first glance, but the vibes and prices don't reflect it. Really dug the look to this place and the staff for the most part was pretty welcoming, but the vibe and clientele were not what you would come to expect from a traditional dive bar experience. My drink was extremely overpriced in comparison to other similar places in DC. I enjoyed the decor (especially upstairs) but that's pretty much about it. My husband and and I had so much fun visiting Trusty's! I read a suggestion it's a must visit for anyone looking to have a drink and play some games in a great atmosphere. That's exactly what Trusty's was! We played a few games while having a drink in a relaxed, chill space. Just what we needed after walking around seeing D.C. all day! The bartenders and locals were so fun and kind. I was excited to see the school bus located upstairs and the bartender kindly opened the upstairs and turned on the lights for us to see it and take some pictures. We loved Trusty's as it reminded us of a favorite bar back home. I so wanted to try the confit the bartender was making and talking about. The bartenders seemed so excited to serve it soon. The bar seems like a great spot. Charging extra for cheese on a cheesesteak seems random. I just ordered a cheesesteak and the bartender asked me what kind of cheese I wanted... provolone was an option, so I picked it. Seems pretty basic. Menu didn't say they added a dollar for cheese. I have very fond memories of Trusty's. It's probably the best dive bar I've ever been to. It's the perfect place to let loose. There was this very good-looking mixed race black guy who worked there and cooked. He seemed like he was related to the other staff, but I never really knew. When I worked near Stadium-Armory metro, I would go to Trusty's when I got off work. For a while, it was like the extended baseball stadium for me when I was done watching a game. When it comes to a good quality dive bar Trusty's really can't be beat. The only downside is that it is so far away from my house ha ha. Whenever I'm there I like to come upstairs so that you hang out in the really cool converted school bus area, but they also have booths and more space downstairs as well as some outside seating out on the sidewalk. I like that the drinks are cold and simple, and the food is decent especially considering it's a dive bar. Back when I used to live in Southeast I came here all the time but now that I'm in Northwest it's harder to get out that way, but now that the Potomac Avenue metro stop area is getting more businesses I can envision myself spending more time in the neighborhood. read more

My friend and I came here after a very long week, and it really reminded us of a bar you would find in Pittsburgh, where we grew up. This is a simple dive bar with a nice beer selection and a good liquor selection. I ordered a Gin and Tonic ($4.55) and my friend a Yuengling ($5), which was so cheap for outside of happy hour that I was shocked when I saw the bill. We also tried quite a few of the food options including Nachos ($9), The Stacker ($8.25), and The Club ($8.50). The nachos were a huge portion, and they were covered in cheese and toppings. They were perfect dive bar nachos. The Stacker was a BLT wrapped in a grilled cheese on Texas toast, and it was delicious. The Club was also good, but I enjoyed the other two things so much more. Oh Trusty's, I am so glad that you're right around the corner from my apartment. I was ecstatic to find this fantastic dive bar when I moved to the neighborhood. It's so freaking divey, I love it! The theme is gas station complete with oil can hanging lights. Head upstairs for the graffiti-fied bus bar. Yes, there's an actual bus in the bar. If I ever need to unwind and grab a drink, or want to stop at one more place before calling it a night, or hang out for awhile, or grab food... this is my spot.The bartenders and the locals that hang here are great! It's the perfect spot because if you want to hang out with people and chat, you can do that here. If you want to hang out and be left alone, you can do that here too. Checking in at Trusty's is a wake up call if you're in your 30s (I just turned 30). Yelp will tell you it's a popular place for 30 year olds. Why? Maybe it's because there's two floors of seating and it isn't crazy loud like some of those bars where 20 year olds hang out. :) They have a good beer list (They also sell Jack's hard cider if you're into that). The food is basic, but good. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and it hit the spot! Nothing fancy, but very tasty. The top floor has a room off the side for events and the main bar area is in a yellow school bus adding to the unique, dive bar feel to it. In my insatiable quest to find the weirdest sh!t wherever we happen to be, I dragged the husband from one end of DC to the other (diagonally!) just so I could see the bar made out of a school bus. Since we rarely get down to that part of the District, I sweetened the deal by promising him a late lunch at Eastern Market, which I had heard so much about. Indulge me for a moment while I set the stage. Getting to the market was a hike in itself, taking longer than expected (about 40 minutes), only to find nearly every food vendor already packed up by the time we arrived. (Except the crepes people, but that's for another review.) Perhaps it was because we got there just an hour before closing, but the market was very disappointing. (Again, for another review.) So now I've got a hangry husband, annoyed that we trekked so far for nothing really. I get a couple of crepes in him to tame the hunger beast, promising him a better late lunch somewhere else, and we set off to find the school bus bar. Let's walk, I say, it's a nice day and it's only 15 minutes away. As you get away from the market area, the neighborhood begins to take on a rougher feel. I could sense my Marine husband gradually begin to transition from semi-relaxed stroll to low alert. (Don't forget he was hungry, too.) That walk seemed to take forever and he was certain I was lost. Just when I suspect he was about to reach his limit and call for a Lyft home, I saw the sign and a few people in the seating area out front. We go in. OMG there's no school bus. It's just a dive bar. Where is the freaking school bus?! The look he gave me...I assume my information was outdated. I insisted we take a seat at the bar so he can grab a beer and just chill for a bit. Of COURSE the beer on tap sucks and the husband gives me another look. I'm not a beer drinker and they aren't foo foo drink makers, so...this day is not turning out well. We might as well eat, I figure. There doesn't seem to be much else around and frankly, he probably would've had a meltdown if I'd suggested we go exploring some more. We look around and it's actually pretty cool with the gas can lights and all. I think we ordered burgers, tasty as I recall, and as we are eating we tell the bartender we had made the trek specifically to see the bus that apparently was no longer there. It's still here, he informs us. It's upstairs. (Upstairs? Who assembles a school bus on the second floor? Then again, we are talking about a school bus inside a bar...) But that section is closed right now. Of course it is! But then he offers to show it to us when the second bartender comes in for his shift. Now that's service. And once we get up there, the husband sees all the craft beers lined up in the bus and it's as if the heavens opened up around him. Point of the story: Trusty's is a cool, neighborhood dive bar. There IS a school bus in it, it IS worth the trek even from the northwest to see it and the craft beer selection is decent enough to calm a frustrated husband. read more

It's a pretty weird setup. Downstairs there's food and a fairly blasé beer selection. The food is alright. The nachos are good and come with a really generous portion but the chicken cheesesteak is pretty dull. I know I should have just gotten the beef but you must experiment to advance sometimes. Upstairs the beer selection is incredible, all served in cans, and comes out of a hollowed out school bus. It's hard to explain and you should probably go check it out. Also, I think you can order the food downstairs and have it brought up but you'll need separate tabs for both floors. read more

Everything I want in a neighborhood bar: the food is a bit greasy and highly customizable, the servers remembered my drink order even in my mask after a long absence, they put Jeopardy! on with sound, and they're friendly to dogs. It's a small space and doesn't have a fryer, only a flat top grill, but is, as advertised, both friendly and reliable. Very good about Covid safety, too! read more

Even though Trusty's isn't truly an old school dive (like Tune Inn), and it's the sister bar of Pour House and 18th Amendment, I still think Trusty's is doing a pretty good job of frontin' as a good ole neighborhood dive. The schoolbus standing in as a bar upstairs doesn't hurt :) Definitely one of the more creative things I've seen in DC that actually works. The seat belts don't work though :) There are various board games that you can play upstairs (most notably jenga with handwritten dares -my name is now Buttons). They also have a pretty big patio for when the weather's nice! FOOD You can get a burger, grilled cheese sandwich, and fries here for a decent price. That's about it. It's all pretty darn good though, and just what you need if you'll be hanging out here for a while. May I recommend the Ol' Reliable burger? DRINKS Go upstairs for their awesome beer can selection. They have all four of the Butternuts beers in cans (a local beer with a rich finish, they have a stout, IPA, pale ale, and hef). I personally enjoy the Hef the most (green can with a fish on it). Drafts are served in mason jars. Happy hour includes Mon-Fri 4-7pm is $1 off rails, $1 off drafts. read more

I've been coming to Trusty's long before they opened the upstairs school bus bar, and have yet to hang out upstairs (usually because it's too crowded). I have a few friends who live in this neighborhood and this is their local watering hole. Personally, I have mixed feelings about the place because it's so small that it easily gets noisy and crowded. I prefer it when our group has the place to ourselves and we can have our pick of Jenga, Connect Four, Chairs, Buck Hunter, etc. Also, when it's not too busy you can load up the juke box and hear all the songs that you paid for, instead of leaving before they get played because others have done the same (grr). Trusty's has a small grill and a menu full of bar food (see pics). No deep fryer though, just potato chips. It used to be that you would smell like grease after leaving, but they've fixed the ventilation with the renovations. Overall, I think that every neighborhood enclave in DC needs it's own local dive-bar, and here Trusty's fills that role. Under the right circumstances, this place is ideal for a small group of people to sit around a table, drink, talk, play childhood games, and watch TV. Good times, just as long as it doesn't get too noisy & crowded. read more

3.55 - There's a SCHOOL BUS on the second floor. A BUS! And bus seats...with cup holders! Not to mention the slight bit of irony that the bar is IN the bus and drinks are served THROUGH the bus windows (might I note that the bus was indeed of the short variety, if that means anything to anyone...) They have your basic and regular selection of adult beverages but what's awesome about this place are the random beers. Gotta say, I really enjoyed my stout from a can with a cow on it. Pretty awesome. I absolutely love random stuff like this. Oh yeah, and cute little patio off the 2nd floor. Drink up inside, get warm, then go be a fool and sit outside in the cold? Yeah...I'm going to wait to sit out there when it's warm again. If you're looking for a laid back place to grab some drinks in a place that's not close to overly crowded, Trusty's is it.
