My friend and I came to Copycat on a Sunday whim. On H st. I'd be lying if I didn't wish I could pick this place up and move it closer to me purely out of greed. The food is delicious and the drinks are so good! Be warned, it is not the biggest spot and you can't make reservations. When we walked in, a snarky waiter informed us there was nowhere to sit. There were two seats at the bar that I'm not sure he saw or if he just didn't want us to take. Maybe it's my Americanized taste buds but this place didn't do it for me. Located in, what feels like, a small upstairs hallway it definitely gives "your favorite dive bar" with limited seating and just enough space to squeeze between the bar and said seats. We sat at the bar during H street festival and got in before the crowd. We were serviced right away and ordered: Crab fried rice - 4/10 - the serving size was good but it lacked flavor outside of spice to me and definitely didn't see or taste any crab. I asked for sauce, any sauce (duck, sweet and spicy, chili, soy, ANYTHING) and they didn't have anything outside of the sauce served with the potstickers. While that did help the rice it couldn't save it. This seems to be one of their signature dishes but I wouldn't recommend it to any one. Shrimp & Pork Potsticker's - 6/10 - you get 6 to order but the shrimp was overcooked and the potstickers were small. I didn't taste any pork but I also couldn't find this on the menu so maybe it was just shrimp? I'm not sure it was loud in there haha. The sauce they served with it was good and helped bring it to a 6 otherwise this would've been a 4. The food came out fast and was hot so I appreciated that. The bar boasts an extensive menu with lots of drinks I'd like to try. Unfortunately one of the bartenders was using her bare hands to chop ice, and add in ingredients to the drinks and she had two bandaids on. I only ever saw her wipe her hands on her clothes and for me that was a deal breaker. I understand with going out there's a level of germs you're going to get by default and that may not bother people but it stopped me from getting a drink. I'd be willing to try this place again if I'm on H street and in the mood for Chinese food. Maybe if I try something different I'd enjoy it more. A Hidden Gem for Cocktails in DC After an amazing dinner, finding a great bar to continue the night is a must, and I'm so glad we followed our ramen spot's recommendation. They claimed it was one of DC's best cocktail bars, so of course, we had to check it out. This bar is first-come, first-served, so if you want a patio table or a good indoor spot, arrive early and be prepared to wait. Being on the second floor, the space is tight, but it adds to the intimate ambiance--perfect for a girlfriend hangout or a date night. The lighting is dim and moody, setting the perfect tone for a cozy evening. I told the bartender I'm an Old-Fashioned girl, and he surprised me with a Sazerac--a New Orleans twist on my go-to cocktail that I rarely see on the East Coast. It was phenomenal. My friend wanted something sweeter, so she first got a Hot Toddy, but when it wasn't quite her style, the bartender thoughtfully crafted another fruit-forward drink, which she loved. The level of attention to detail and skill in mixing these drinks was next level--some of the best cocktails I've ever had. A Little Something to Eat We also ordered the somber soup, which was like a pork dumpling soup without noodles--a perfect balance to our drinks. However, the wait for food was long--over an hour. Because of this, they comped both our food and drinks, which was unexpected but appreciated. Final Thoughts I'd definitely return for the drinks and atmosphere, but keep in mind: *Come early if you want a seat without a long wait. *It gets crowded and loud, so it's not a quiet wine bar experience. *Service is thoughtful, but food can take a while. Even though I didn't see our final bill, I'd estimate it would have been around $80 assuming an auto-tipping policy. Honestly, the food here deserves the five stars. The fried ribs were DELISH. The portion was big. It was fried to perfection and the meat on the inside was succulent. One of the best bars in DC for cocktails. We used to go all the time for their Tiki menu which was absolutely amazing. The drinks are expensive, but whereas at other bars I'll complain about how cocktails are always $16 now, this place is actually WORTH IT. I'll gladly pay a premium for a premium cocktail, and this is really the only bar in DC where it does feel that way. You're getting at least a couple standard servings per cocktail, and they're all made with painstaking attention to detail from the bartenders. Walked to Granville Moore's a cute Belgian spot and had another drink while waiting. Finally got food. Even though the delivery experience was a buzz kill the food was absolutely fantastic. The sauces are so complex and authentic - no jars of brown sauce here - this is the real deal. The vegetables dishes, eggplant, spinach, tofu amongst the best I have ever tasted. Also had the orange chicken. This is very elevated from your standard Chinese takeout. If you do not have a restaurant reservation ( that's a scam story for another time) and you do have the time to bar hop while you wait for takeout. I've visited Copycat Co 3-4 times, and every dish has been amazing. On the weekend, the bar gets pretty crowded, so expect to wait for a table or bar seat--but it's absolutely worth it. Ambiance upstairs is great for a date night with dim lighting, a good number of two tops and a bunch of bar seating, while the downstairs patio has some larger tables that are better for groups. The Chimichurri is a must-order. The perfectly cooked steak, bright acidic sauce, crunchy fennel and herbs make for an unbeatable combo. This was my first time trying the Salt n Pepper Eggplant, and it's far from a boring veggie side. It's an incredible, flavor-packed main dish I've literally dreamed about since. Our server confirmed we were good with a high spice level, and I'm glad he did--this dish is VERY SPICY. The heat is intense, but it's equally flavorful with a ton of aromatics that hold their own.
