Dinner at Primrose tonight was an absolute delight--one of those meals that lingers pleasantly in your memory long after you leave the table. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt thoughtful and welcoming. Our server, Josh, was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely kind. His recommendations helped guide us through the menu and made choosing our dishes feel effortless. Every plate that came to the table was beautifully balanced and deeply flavorful. Compliments to the chef and the entire kitchen team--each dish felt carefully composed and satisfying. Highlights for us included the oysters Rockefeller, shrimp toast, and a perfectly prepared crispy skin rockfish. The coconut rice is really something special. Even the desserts were memorable; the orange dreamsicle pie and chocolate pot de crème were a wonderful way to end the evening. The restaurant itself is charmingly decorated, with tables spaced comfortably apart so the dining room feels relaxed rather than crowded. It's the kind of space where you can settle in and really enjoy the evening. My partner's cocktail and a lovely Cabernet Franc were both a pleasure to the eye, nose, and palate, pairing beautifully with the meal. All in all, it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. I wanted to love this really cute neighborhood restaurant however I was very underwhelmed. I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon during happy hour (5-7 pm Monday thru Friday). I've been wanting to visit for years and so I was really looking forward to finally making it in. Upon arrival we were able to get a seat at the bar immediately. We were greeted right away and the bartender provided his recommendations. Here's everything we enjoyed and didn't enjoy as much ... + IPA beer-- really delicious $6 + oyster rockefeller-- didn't really taste the oyster and they were tiny + fries--- not crispy enough and could use a little more flavor/salt + lamb chops-- also just ok, small and only had 2 pieces with a small salad +butter lettuce cesar-- meh, nothing to really rave about + smashburger-- 3/5 we were told that the locals rave about their smashburger as one of the best in town buttttt idk about all that lol. I think what I didn't really like was the onion on it. Overall I would give Primrose another try. I love the neighborhood, local feel. It was very busy in here when we stopped by. I would try more of their wines and a couple other items on the menu. read more

Primrose is such a charming restaurant in Brookland. We went for dinner with friends on a Thursday night. The restaurant decor is thoughtful and aesthetically pleasing. I loved the details and vases on the little ledges over the windows. The service was friendly. Our waiter explained the menu thoroughly and offered suggestions. I really liked that there were a couple mocktail options for drinks. Some of the food highlights included the lentil poppers, Parker house rolls, butter lettuce Caesar, the burger, the steak, and the rockfish. Everything was delicious and fresh. We tried the sunchokes, and we weren't really sure what vegetable we were getting. They were kind of like a potato or turnip. It was different for us, but we liked the flavor and presentation. Me, my wife and son visited Primrose recently since we live in the neighbor. I haven't been here in years and I was excited to go. The service was on point. Our waiter was attentive and mindful of the fact that brunch was ending soon from the time we arrived. I order the crispy potatoes and the bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches while my wife ordered the chicken and waffles. I enjoyed my sandwich and half salad. The bacon was thick cut which I was a fan of. As for the chicken and waffles it was sub-par. The chicken was overcooked as well as the waffle. My ideal type of waffle is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This waffle was dense. The potato were fantastic. Look forward to trying more of their menu. read more

I took my daughter here for her birthday and it was a fabulous experience. From start to finish the service was top notch and they made her feel so celebrated. It seems like a good restaurant to have in Brookland (which doesn't have enough options) but I wouldn't make the trip to visit again. More like 3.5 stars. I had heard good things about it over the years but never visited until now. I stopped by Saturday night at 7 PM with a group of four. The place wasn't too busy, with maybe half the inside seats occupied and almost no one on the patios. We had a liter of the Glassmaker chilled red ($60) which was very good. Then shared the Parker House Rolls ($15, 6 pieces), Tomato ($15), Sashimi ($16, 3 pieces), Sunchokes ($15), Pork Belly ($19), Duck Breast ($22), and Hake ($35). For dessert, the Blueberry Icebox Pie ($14) and Chocolate Pot de Creme ($13). Split among four people, this was enough but a bit light. Our favorite dishes were the hake and the tomatoes. The tomatoes should really come with bread to soak up the nice sauce. The pork belly and duck were were simple, straightforward presentations; I would like to see something more interesting. The desserts were tasty but a bit lame -- both simple, both made in advance, both sharing a toasted meringue component. Service was good. Our server was friendly and helpful about the wine selection. All of the savory food came out very quickly and appropriately coursed. There were too minor missteps: they said the sashimi was 5 pieces (it was 3) and there was a very long wait for desserts (not explainable since they were both premade). The menu was mostly accurate to the website. Website had one extra savory dish and one extra dessert that were not there IRL. FYI The bill has a 5% service fee. read more

Lovely little neighborhood gem. The interior is funky and fun, a great environment for anything from a date to a family dinner. Staff is very nice, one of the few places in town where they're trained to be truly knowledgeable about the menu and how the food is crafted. Bar staff have been great recommending wines or cocktails to accompany the different courses. The kitchen is very creative, and we enjoy both their set menu as well as the special fixed price menus they put together from time to time. The food is true to the restaurant's name and very much in the French style. Deserves to be a destination as well as a neighborhood highlight. read more

Yall! I was judging these small portion sizes and wasn't sure what to expect. Baaaaaby, it was a treat. I really enjoyed the options that we had! The half roasted chicken was a favorite. Their chickpea poppers were our appetizers (and, skeptical). Those little things were POPPING Indeed. lol. Had a slight "kick" to them and they are served HOT, but so yummy. As someone who is not a big fish person, I wasn't sure about the fish as I've never had tilefish before. It was the "Parsley Crusted Atlantic Tilefish" Drinks were okay, I enjoyed the gin inspired drink, but didn't enjoy the second one. I forgot what it was though. Service was friendly, approachable. The bar menu goes all night vs having a happy hour, so has a lot of the same small and large plates + drinks that you'd get when sitting at the table (but cheaper- definitely the way to go!). Everything we had was well-prepared, delicious and in perfect portions for each course. Visited today and left a bit disappointed... The prices are quite high for mediocre, small portions of food. The hibiscus French 75s were well made, yet the mocktail was mostly ice. Stopped in recently - the space is beautiful and open, lots of light coming in. Not packed on a weekday but not empty either, was able to walk in and grab a table, noise level isn't bad. Everyone was nice, food was served quickly. Started with the mango lassi cocktail which was really nice, although could've had more mango. The mac and cheese was delicious, the top crust of cheese was amazing. For dinner had the smash burger, which was satisfying overall. The burger is a double patty "smash" burger, although it's not dripping in grease like other smash burgers. It has gruyere and caramelized onions - if you like french onion soup this one's for you. The bun was nice, although there were some drier bites - wish the patty's were either fattier, or there was more mayo (or maybe a garlic aioli) to alleviate that. Fries served with it are thick cut and tasty. Side salad was also good, although it was a touch overdressed and oversalted. A nice meal in a nice space, would definitely return to try other menu items. read more

We came to Primrose for brunch, a French wine bar and bistro located in the Brookland 'hood. I had the French Toast (brioche topped with chantilly and strawberries & blueberries, served with maple syrup), while my dining partner had the Primrose SMASH! Burger (with gruyere, onion jam, and mayo). The French Toast was super dried, and not sure if it was in the batter long enough before being prepared. The SMASH! Burger was okay, and tasted similar to eating a cup of French onion soup with the caramelized onions and the gruyere. Portions are on the smaller end, so this place is a good option for a lighter fare? Service was okay. The interior of the restaurant is pretty - loved the ornate ceiling decor and the plumed feather fixtures. I was finally able to make my grand entrance into Primrose. It slipped my mind that it was nestled in the Brookland neighborhood, but it was easy to get to from my far, far away land. Double patio, diagonal entry way, antique touches, distressed paint/walls were perfect touches to my gals brunch. The staff was adorable. Each of them. I made sure to order the French 75. Scrumptious. I also could NOT resist the biscuits and gravy. Just right, not overpowering. The other gals liked their orders too. But I vote for the biscuits. May try something else next time. We found this gem thanks to cherished friends and we can't wait to come back. The hors d'oeuvres were unique and tasty, though the pate mousse was the best I've found in DC. The wines were exceptional, the cocktails classically French yet also offered interesting additions. All the starters we tried were delicious but the Liege salad is one I wished I could enjoy everyday. The sea base was perfection with a sauce that was at once classically French, packed with flavor, and yet noticeably light. The ambiance reminds me of living in Provence as a child. The decor was organic modern blended with nouveau deco flourishes. It was a beautiful back drop for the meal. But what shined even brighter than fabulous food, a beautiful setting, and craft libations was the service. Each and every person hosting and tending to us were warm, thoughtful, and skilled. The bartender stressed that you generally need a reservation but I couldn't tell as the place was empty. Food: Meh. Middle range food. I had the burger, thought it would be simple enough and good but it was dry. :( He mentioned that it's considered a smash burger so it's cooked all the way through and boy was it cooked all the way through... and through. The cheese may have saved it for cheese lovers! Wines: All natural wines! Interesting but most of them will be quite dry. Service: We were seated promptly due to the restaurant being empty. The bartender asked us for our IDs when ordering drinks, maybe this is normal but I do not recall him asking the non minority patrons sitting next to us. Ah well! Overall 6.5/10 because of the atmosphere. Definitely try Rose's Luxury over this place if you are looking for a similar vibe for a bit more money. read more

My good friend and I visited this establishment back in the winter on a cold Saturday evening. We were looking forward to a fine meal at a restaurant that had great reviews. The place wasn't too busy, but we had an extended wait- short-staffed we were told. When we finally got a menu from a very friendly server, I ordered the scallop boudin, winter salad, and my friend got the smash burger. We looked at drinks- prices were sort of steep, so we decided to split a glass of wine. During our long(er) wait for the meal, the owner of the place came over and chatted with us- a nice guy, who seemed almost overly friendly talked about his life as a chef and restauranteer. We inquired that an upscale place like this usually serves bread or something before the meal, and he offered to get us some. He slipped away and we waited, and waited....and waited. Our wine came- decent wine, but for the price it was no value. Then the meals came- the scallop dinner was not bad, but nothing to write home about; my friend said the same thing about the smash burger. The salad was decent, but I've had fresher salad, even in December. We wondered what happened to the owner, and our bread. Nothing. We tried to flag down our waitress- she was busy with other customers. We were still hungry but calculated the cost-benefit of ordering more and waiting another 25 minutes. Our server finally swooned on over to our table, chipper as always. We asked about the bread, she said she would check on that. We waited, and waited some more- our waitress finally returned and said she was unable to find the owner. Huh?? My friend finally had had enough and asked for the checks; I felt the same way. Our checks arrived with an unpleasant holiday surprise- a ~20% "charge" added to the bill (this was not the tip) that supposedly went to all the workers in the restaurant. Did this include the missing owner?? We hadn't seen anything on the menu, in the restaurant, or through conversations with our enthusiastic server or overly-friendly owner who seemed like a mirage at this point about a ~20% service charge. Imagine getting your car worked on and getting a bill + 20% charge for all the auto shop workers? Adding it up in my head, I got a paltry meal, a salad, and half glass of wine for over $50; my friend didn't fare much better. In the end, I paid just under $60 (which included a small tip- I had to give our amiable server something extra) and was still hungry. As we frustratingly made our way to the door, by coincidence the owner appeared- "How was the meal?!" he bubbled. Being polite, we forced smiles and said "fine/good". "Hey, what happened to that bread you promised us?" my friend had to blurt out. "Oh", he said with an ear to ear grin, "I got busy and forgot." "Happy holidays!" he declared, and quickly turned to the nearest table, pivoting his conversation to other guests. I wanted to give this place at least three stars, with its wonderful ambiance, friendly workers, and decent food, but I need to be honest with myself (and Yelp)- I did not leave with the holiday spirit in me. The entire restaurant is immaculately decorated, it felt very art forward. My friend and I had the French 75 from the HH menu - which was not too sweet, but could have a splash more sparkling wine. My husband had the rose and really loved it! We shared the fries with herbs and dijonaise. We could not stop eating them and ended up ordering a second! Then we had the shishito peppers and the liege salad, both delicious. The liege salad was the clear front runner at the table, fresh veggies with a creamy dressing and the perfect amount of crunch! The only negative was that they don't have a sugar alternative for sweetening drinks. My brother, a type 1 diabetic, ordered unsweet tea and his only option for sweetener was simple syrup, which is sugar. All in all it was awesome and will be back. Highly recommend. read more

Came here for a celebration with 4 friends and wasn't too impressed. The restaurant itself is beautiful, but it seems pretty classic DC dining -- they invested a lot more in the "vibes" than the food itself. Wasn't impressed with their limited menu -- not for the lack of choices, but it's not accessible, reasonable, or mouth-watering. The appetizers for example, were just a few dollars less than the entrees. When asked for what our server recommended, she proceeded to read us the list of options lol. I also asked if two different entrees had cheese that was pasteurized (I'm pregnant) but she couldn't tell me, nor did she try to find the answer which made me uneasy. I settled on the gnocchi, but was disappointed at the portion size, and that the breadcrumbs were hard as pebbles. I don't think I'd return except for a happy hour, which is a bummer with limited options in Brookland. If you're looking for an occasion spot, this might not be it. read more

My partner and I had dinner here, and my takeaway was: some menu items were good, and some completely missed, and I somehow ordered all of the misses. He got the burger and said it was great (the bearnaise sauce was divine). I got the agnolotti and thought the sauce was way too sweet. He got the chocolate mousse for dessert, and it was perfect. I got the cookies with hot chocolate, and they both tasted like they came out of a package. We both liked the green salad to start, and the ribs we shared were also pretty good.
