Came here for a celebration with 4 friends and wasn't too impressed. The restaurant itself is beautiful, but it seems pretty classic DC dining -- they invested a lot more in the "vibes" than the food itself. Wasn't impressed with their limited menu -- not for the lack of choices, but it's not accessible, reasonable, or mouth-watering. The appetizers for example, were just a few dollars less than the entrees. When asked for what our server recommended, she proceeded to read us the list of options lol. I also asked if two different entrees had cheese that was pasteurized (I'm pregnant) but she couldn't tell me, nor did she try to find the answer which made me uneasy. I settled on the gnocchi, but was disappointed at the portion size, and that the breadcrumbs were hard as pebbles. I don't think I'd return except for a happy hour, which is a bummer with limited options in Brookland. If you're looking for an occasion spot, this might not be it. read more

My friend made reservations for dinner here. The reservation was for 8:30pm. It was for a party of 3. My friend who made the reservation got off work later so she didn't manner it till 9pm. One of our friends arrived at 8:30pm and I arrived at 8:45pm. Since we were all arriving at different times we just chose to sit at the bar. I sit at the bar with my friend and the bartender is like we close at 9pm. I'm like oh okay I didn't realize. I ordered a drink and said I wouldn't order food because we would go some where else when our last friend arrived. Here is the issue. The owner comes over to tell us that our friend called and was very rude on the phone and hung up in his face. He was like I don't have to put up with it. She is late for her on reservation. She still isn't here at 9 so Fuck her. Y'all this man is literally talking about our friend to us. He starts saying how unprofessional she is. So my friend stops him and says, hey! You are being very unprofessional right now. You are discussing this with us but we are here and you shouldn't be having this conversation with us. It's not okay to say Fuck our friend. He apologized and said you are right, I should not have said that or discussed this with you all. He said How can i make this right? We were like we good. I look on the website and it says they close at 10. So I'm like why can't we order drinks. He was like the bartender is new and she doesn't know we close at 10 pm. It really was a shit show in there. The only reason i am giving 2 stars is because he apologized and my one friend said he enjoyed his food. I probably won't ever be back tho. read more

I came back once again for some of my favs yesterday evening and again, I don't think I could ever be disappointed with the SMASH Burger. It was just as good, if not even better this time around. This is a top notch spot for brunch! The food is incredibly delicious and the ambience is cool! I am a huge fan of the smoked salmon egg Benny, French toast, and bacon. The smoked salmon egg Benny was everything I expected from a smoked salmon Benedict. The salmon tasted fresh, the egg Benedict was perfectly cooked with the right amount of runny yolk, and the salad that came with the dish was also fresh with tasty dressing. The French toast was one of the best French toasts I've ever had because of not only the massive size, but because it was perfectly fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The fresh fruit on top was an added bonus. Don't skip the bacon here. The thick cut bacon was A-1 from its size and tenderness. The staff members are super nice and helpful. I did have trouble with getting a new mug because of lip stick stains. But the staff eventually sorted it out. Overall I'll be back. Great spot! read more

I've been eyeing this place for quite some time for brunch and dinner, so I got my sisters to join me for a sunday funday brunch. When we arrived, there was no host stand so we were a bit confused on where to go and who to approach to get seated. So, we headed to the bar and inquired. We were told to wait outside/near the door, which was a bit awkward, but we were seating rather fast, so it was no biggie. We opted for a mimosa pitcher and coffee to get the brunch started. The pitcher poured 5 glasses worth (it was 3 of us so it worked out fine) as promised by our server. The champagne to orange juice ratio was solid. They do offer other juice options as well, pineapple and maybe cranberry juice, if I'm not mistaken. On to the food! We each ordered something different on the menu in the spirit of planning to eat off each other's place, so why not! We placed an order for the Shrimp and Grits, Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny, Jalapeno Cheddar Smash Sando, and a side of bacon. It took about 35/45 minutes for the food to come out, but we were busy chatting away, so we didn't notice the timing at first. But then 2 dishes arrived, missing others so that's when we asked about the rest. The Shrimp and Grits were your standard brunch dish, there wasn't any wow factor that made it a standout dish. It had the smoked sausage which is always a plus and the grits themselves were nice and thick. You could go wrong with an eggs benny, but Primrose did not disappoint. From the savory biscuit, flavorful hollandaise, this was a solid dish as well. Soon after these two dishes came out, so did the bacon. We got 3 nicely crisped, thick bacon pieces. Need I say more? Who doesn't love bacon on the side. Now, the Jalapeno Cheddar Smash Sando is why I've given this place a 4 instead of a 5. Not only was the dish late coming out to the point that everyone else was almost done their meals, it was not the original dish. I was informed after asking how much longer that they'd ran out of my dish and that I might have to order something else. Of course, I'm annoyed. 45+ minutes goes by and I'm just being told the kitchen ran out of this dish? To me that represented a lack of communication between kitchen staff and front room staff. Within a couple minutes a cheddar smash sando did come out but honey, it was a mess. The kitchen served me 4 mini dropped biscuits (yes, they were absolutely delicious) topped with the eggs and chicken sausage. So of course, I had no choice but to ask for the manager! I was in disbelief because in order to eat the dish, I had to cut it up into 4s to make breakfast sliders. Now, they could've saved themselves a little bit here had they thought to do that, but they didn't. Instead, I had to get creative and a bit messy. The manager came over, apologized, explained the situation and I shared my disappointment, especially since I was looking forward to those jalapeno biscuits (the mini dropped biscuits were regular). To make up for this massive hiccup, she comped my meal and ordered us the French Toast so that's why I settled on 4 stars. I ate some of the sandwich, but not all since the chicken sausage was on the pink side in the middle and I just couldn't proceed even though the manager said it was normal. My paranoia got the best of me lol. But the French Toast was a winner. Not only was it cooked very well, with lightly crispy edges, the chantilly and the fresh fruit made each bite heavenly. Great ambiance, French fusion type decor and menu options. Caving into the Mac n cheese temptation was worth it. The breadcrumbs were not overwhelming and the cheese was nice and gooey. I ordered the bronzino over broccolini instead of a lentil and although the fish was nicely cooked with flaky skin, the broccolini was the best! It was spicy and zesty. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I live in Phoenix but I get the pleasure of patronizing this most excellent restaurant every time I'm in DC visiting my cousins. First of all, I feel like I just walked into some swanky French place when I come here! Feathers! Beautiful colors! Cool light fixtures! The wine list is so fabulous! I usually just drink some of whatever bottle my cousin or husband orders, but this last time I asked for "pink bubbles" and viola!!...pink bubbles appeared. Delicious pink bubbles, I might add. The menu is small but mighty, and every time I go there is something a bit different. The steak frites are missed from the menu and a "formal" complaint has been made to the owner. And by this I mean we whined about it when the owner (who my cousins know well) sat down at our table to chat with us. They do still have duck frites and moules frites, which is a good thing because I might cut someone for one of those fries. I have never had a bad meal here. In fact, I tried a bite of the salmon this last time and it was SOOOO GOOOOOOOD and, folks, I don't even really like salmon! I think this place is magic. There has never been one dish that hasn't blown me away if I'm being honest. I have always been welcomed warmly by all staff, and it's very clear that owner takes pride in presenting the very best experience to his guests. I've been before COVID, during COVID (summer 2021) and then just this week. They've done a great job creating an outdoor space for diners, with coverings and heaters, and they take all possible precautions to protect both guests and staff. Very trendy spot, and I think that's a lot of this place's appeal. It did make for an intimate date night. However for the price point of this restaurant, our steak was underwhelming. I had an amazing time at Primrose DC. I had some spare time on a random evening and decided to go to Primrose. I arrived and was immediately greeted with smiles and a great welcoming vibe. I sat down at the bar and was greeted by Liz and Charles. Liz gave me an extensive explanation of all of the great wines on the list and made a suggestion for dinner. I had the Lamb Kabob, which unfortunately I have forgotten the menu name. The lamb was BY FAR the BEST lamb kabob I've had in my life. I rounded off the meal with an amazing berry mocktail and the chocolate mouse, both of which were also to die for! I will definitely become a regular at this restauran. Primrose in Brentwood/Ivy City, DC has been getting a lot of press lately, and I decided to have brunch there before checking out the nearby Van Gogh immersive exhibit. Vegetarian variety: 6/10. The vegetable frittata and a couple of sweet brunch dishes were on the menu, but not a huge number of choices. Taste: 7/10. The frittata was hearty and filling, with tangy tomato coulis and goat cheese dollops that contrasted well with the egg, potato and other vegetables. The french press coffee was strong and substantial, and left me ready to learn about art! Ambiance: 9/10. This is where Primrose really shone - it was like Moulin Rouge, daytime edition. Loved the feathery chandeliers, candlesticks and books lining the top walls, and pretty blue accents throughout. The service was friendly and prompt, too. Vaccine cards were checked at the door, and everyone was masked unless seated and eating. Price: 7/10. The frittata was about $16-18 and the coffee was $6 for 16 oz, which was a little high but not unusual for a DC brunch. read more

This place is a really nice decorated and cool hip spot. The service was good and everyone seemed very friendly. The food was good but it was not anything that would make me come back, but then again we were only there for brunch, so there is definitely still a lot left to try. We had the shrimp and grits, the salmon Benedict and the French toast. The food came out very quickly so that was really nice, although the server forgot my cocktail but that's no big deal. It was a good cocktail, the Fleur with vodka and elderflower liqueur. The shrimp and grits was a bit smaller than I expected, Im glad we ordered the French toast as well otherwise I would have still been hungry. Unfortunately they were not that great. The grits were rather bland, and the texture was a bit off. The broth/sauce was nice but overall I did not think the flavors were anything special. I'm not even sure if I tasted any cheese in them, something seemed off. Brookland's Finest a few blocks down has better shrimp and grits in my opinion. The salmon Benedict was good also, it just did not stand out in any way. The French toast sadly did not taste neither fresh nor did it have that soft consistency warm out of the pan. It was a bit tough on the sides unfortunately, but it hit the sweet spot and helped fill me up after the grits. I would recommend someone to check it out, there are definitely a lot of nice choices on the regular menu but this is not your fine French dining restaurant necessarily, but it is still good. This place is a gem tucked away in a neighborhood which is nice because it cuts out the city noise. Since it's in a neighborhood, you're not driving around for 20 minutes looking for parking. The decor is a total vibe and the food is great. But there are a couple of things that's making me give this place 4 out of 5 stars. Upon arriving, I was confused since there wasn't a sign for the restaurant but because it was the only restaurant in neighborhood (there were literally just houses surrounding it), I took a chance and walked in. Turns out, there was a sign, painted on the floor in front of the door lol. What an unusual spot to place the restaurant name. The floor was brick and the name was painted red so it blended in with the floor. Once inside, there wasn't a hostess stand so I just kind of stood there awkwardly looking around, trying to see if I could catch anybody. Luckily I didn't have to awkwardly stand there long, a gentleman approached and got me and my friends seated. The waiter greeted us right away, then got us water and that was probably the only time we got top notch service. For the rest of our time there, it was us trying to see where she is and trying to get her attention for service. Our French Toast also came out without the maple syrup (you can see it missing in the pic) and by the time we got our waiter attention, we were 3/4 done with the french toast already. read more

This is the old Sylvestre Café, but absolutely no traces of it remain. What an astonishing transformation Primrose accomplishes. The redo is beautiful. Stopped in for Happy Hour for my first visit recently. The duck liver mousse, covered with a delicate berry compote and served with crostini, is simply outstanding. It's like eating ice cream. The Primrose burger is scrumptious. The beef is first-rate, and lightly melted Gruyère cheese and delightful caramelized onion jam on top make this burger sing. I found the French wines a bit lacking. I didn't see any Bordeaux listed on the various printed menus handed to me. As an oenophile who adores the mighty Bordeaux, I'll hope for some in the future. 4.5 stars. Had a great time at Primrose! Came for brunch and was seated right away. The decor of this place is very cute and it's in a quiet spot of town which makes for a nice more lowkey brunch. I had their French press coffee to drink and it was phenomenal! I haven't had coffee that good at brunch in a very long time. To eat I had a croque madame which came with a side salad. The entree was huge, as was the side salad. The only complaint is that the bread was a little stale but otherwise everything was tasty. I also had a side bowl of berries which comes with a delicious light whipped cream. Our service was great. There were a couple servers who checked on us throughout and were super attentive. The Mushroom Gnocchi was insanely good. I'm a sucker for mushroom sauces with my meats and pastas (or Gnocchi), and this place executed perfectly. The beech mushrooms were small and savory! I liked their texture; not too mushy, not too woody. The French onion soup was good, however it was served so incredibly hot that it burned half the tables taste buds before the main course. We tried the Smash burger with its two Pattie's, Gruyère cheese onion jam with its light sweetness. Served wth potato hash and salad lightly tossed with a vinaigrette. The Spicy fried chickie biscuit sandwich. A fried boneless thigh with a finely sliced red cabbage and jicama slaw served wth the same sides. The slaws creamy dressing adds to the rich flavorful thigh meat. The thick sliced Brioche French toast with fresh berries and maple syrup. We added an order of their house made cut thick sliced bacon pan seared to add caramelized bits of goodness. Top everything off with a cafe of mimosas and French pressed coffee. Came here after winning an Instagram giveaway from @eatdrinkdc. I came here in the evening, and Victor greeted me pretty immediately once I was seated by the hostess. The atmosphere has dimmed lighting with candles at the tables. The food was fantastic, and I ordered the Steak Tartare, French Onion Soup, Braised Oxtail, and Creme Brulee. The Steak Tartare was tasty, the quality was refreshing, and the texture was soft. The Braised Oxtail was delicious, and wish there was more meat since it was delicious and tender. The Creme Brulee was great to finish off the meal, but the bowl is pretty huge for the amount that's in it. My friend has been wanting to come to this restaurant for a few years and we decided to meet here for brunch. The sever was friendly and I was looking forward to the whole experience. Then it started winding down.... we ordered French toast and my friend wanted to Rosé with it. The server responded "our rosé is weird. It's salty". We were like "$&);;$!!!!!" Or course my friend didn't order it. We appreciate the honesty but why does the restaurant keep such a bad wine???? When our French toast arrived, we ordered bacon on the side as addition. Well our bacon never arrived and my server finished his shift and went home. We were one of 2 parties in the entire restaurant around 2:30pm. We were driven to this cute place by positive reviews (4.5/5 stars) and were looking forward to check the place out. Despite multiple reviews where people talked about how busy the place is, there was only one other table occupied at the time when two of us arrived. There was about the same number of waiters in this place as the guests (five and five). The waiters were clearly unoccupied: they even formed a standing group near the bar and were actively discussing something. At one point one female waiter was standing and hugging another waiter which as odd given that they both are at work and there are customers in the room. Overall our waiter was nice and friendly. I love French cuisine but this didn't make my choice easy. The menu turned out to be very short with many somewhat exotic options and tough choices to be made. I decided to go with rabbit duo (rabbit is served cooked in two ways). My friend got a quail. For the starters we both picked French onion soup. We both liked how our food looked like when it was brought to us. However, the taste didn't meet the expectations. We both agreed that French onion soup ($10) was very sour. My rabbit duo had an okay rabbit under dough half, but another half was also rabbit but cooked differently. It looked like medallions. The taste was absolutely inedible for me. I had to spit into a napkin what I had in my mouth and never touch that rabbit again. Such a waste of $28! My friend ate half of the tiny quail and left another half because it was undercooked. The side for the quail was pretty tasty (I tried it too! :) Additionally, the restaurant is marked as "$$" on Yelp, but I believe it's actually "$$$" based on what kind of prices I've seen on the menu. Disposition: not coming back. Advice: might be good for desserts but not the main food for sure. read more

Came for an early dinner with a fellow yelp elite, and we agreed this place merits the 4 stars that it currently averages. We had reservations at 5 on a Sunday and were seated promptly. The restaurant did not start to fill up until we left (around 6:45). We were also greeted promptly and offered still or tap water, and our waitress came a couple minutes later to explain the menu and offer her recommendations. We both went with the Le Mistral cocktail to start, which used house-made bitters. It was a refreshing drink, and beautifully presented. Our server recommended the mini carrottes as an appetizer, and we decided to go with that. I never knew carrots came in so many colors! We both thought the dish could have used a little fromage blanc, but overall, it was a very interesting and tasty dish. For our entrees, I ordered the daube de boeuf and my friend ordered the roasted fish (per the server's recommendation). There was quite a gap between the appetizer and entrees, which is where I would subtract a half a star. I don't know if our server didn't put the entree order in until after we finished our appetizer, or what... but we thought it was quite strange given that the restaurant was only half full and a lot of other tables that came after us were receiving their entrees before us. Anyway, the daube de beouf was good. I like anything that's wrapped in phyllo. However, the short rib was not all tender, and parts of it were dry. I wouldn't have minded if I had more sauce with the dish, but the dish was light on the accompaniments (mushroom, parsnips). This is where I subtract another half star. I would suggest that the restaurant add a little more flavor, maybe even drizzle the sauce over the phyllo, in the future. My friend didn't love the type of fish she had, but thought it was a solid dish. We didn't save room for dessert, so I wouldn't be opposed to returning and trying a few more things. I'm hoping that they add a little more to the menu in the future. I'd love to come back with my boyfriend and maybe share a few of the dishes- it feels like a great date spot. read more

Cute restaurant with a really nice bar inside. The tables were super spaced out however and kind of awkward. I'm not sure if they're still doing social distancing here. Also it was pretty cold inside every time the doors open especially it would become freezing cold. That being said the food was good, not amazing, but solid. The shrimp appetizer was pretty big with 6 shrimps and a lot of crostini. The shrimp were a decent size but they were kind of hard and not cooked well. The sauce that came with the shrimp was a little bit tomatoy and a little bit garlicky and it was really flavorful especially with the bread. The mac & cheese was yummy as the menu stated and was served hot which is always a plus. It wasn't as creamy as I wanted it to be however. I tried a bite of the halibut which was a nice simple dish and cooked in a really light romesco sauce. I had the steak and I always love restaurant steak that serves sliced. It wasn't a huge serving of steak but rather small - I would put it at maybe 6 ounces, maybe 8. The steak was not served as hot and fresh as I would've liked it but it was still good and cooked to the way that I wanted it. I really liked the béarnaise sauce that they served with it and mashed potatoes. They gave a hearty serving of mashed potatoes! Those could've just used a little bit more butter. I've only been here for post-dinner cocktails, but really enjoyed both the drinks and the ambiance. Even though it initially strikes me as more of a romantic restaurant (and I myself was on a date), there were lots of large friend groups dining as well. The dim lighting/candles paired with the quirky decor seems to be great for both. The bar was pretty empty, so we grabbed seats there. The bartenders weren't particularly friendly, but they were attentive which is fine by me. We ordered a couple of cocktails and wine, and I really liked the one with cognac, as well as the Beaujolais. I wish I wasn't so full because the dessert menu looked really good too. The first things you notice when you walk in are the feather lamps above the high tops. This place has a very unique design. We came here for a dinner at the suggestion of our neighbor. We were really excited to try it, but it just didn't do it for us. Well, for me at least. Don't get me wrong, the food was pretty good, just not quite worth the price. I wasn't too impressed. I ordered the gnocchi, which wasn't amazing. My date ordered the chicken entree, and I will say that I've never had chicken that tender in my life. (Obviously I tried his dish because I wasn't super interested in mine). We also ordered the ham tartine with Amish butter as an appetizer. That actually did wow me, and I should've had that as my meal The suggestion from our neighbor was centered around their wine nights. And I can vouch for the wine. They have a great selection, and the server had great suggestions. read more
